Hoe bouw je eigenlijk een sterk merk als je Harry en Meghan heet? Waarom is humor in reclame veel meer dan af en toe een grappige inhaker? En waarom is Miljuschka Witzenhausen misschien wel precies de juiste persoon voor HelloFresh?In aflevering 4 van FC Merkcircus duiken merkstrateeg Jos Govaart en marketingjournalist Bas Hakker weer in drie actuele onderwerpen uit de wereld van merken, marketing en reputatie.1. Harry en Meghan: kun je een persoonlijk merk nog repareren?Harry en Meghan vertrokken naar Amerika met een enorme bekendheid, een Netflix-deal en alle mogelijkheden om een sterk eigen merk neer te zetten. Toch lijkt hun merkwaarde volgens deskundigen behoorlijk afgebrokkeld.Bas en Jos bespreken wat er mis kan gaan als je niet duidelijk bepaalt waar je als merk voor wilt staan. Want ook voor bekende mensen geldt eigenlijk dezelfde simpele merkregel: kies twee of drie zaken waarmee je geassocieerd wilt worden en bouw daar consequent aan.Jos haalt daarbij Mark Ritson aan: een groot deel van merkstrategie bestaat uit nee zeggen tegen dingen die niet bijdragen aan de gekozen koers.Dat leidt ook tot een interessante discussie over PR. In Cannes bestaat inmiddels zelfs een aparte categorie voor humor en onderzoek laat zien dat grappige campagnes veel effectiever kunnen zijn dan saaie reclame.Maar daar zit volgens Jos een belangrijke voorwaarde aan: humor moet onderdeel zijn van je merk en niet alleen van je socialmediakalender.Een grappige 1-aprilactie of snelle inhaker kan veel aandacht krijgen, maar daarmee bouw je nog niet automatisch aan je merk. De kunst is dat mensen de humor uiteindelijk herkennen als typisch van jou.Coolblue is daarvan een goed voorbeeld. De grapjes op dozen en bezorgbusjes zijn misschien niet bedoeld om mensen hard te laten lachen, maar wel om dat bekende 'mondhoekje omhoog' te veroorzaken.Ook Snickers, Specsavers en natuurlijk Centraal Beheer komen voorbij. Merken die humor jarenlang consequent inzetten en daarmee herkenbaarheid opbouwen.3. Miljuschka en HelloFresh: de juiste endorser kiezenTot slot gaat het over de samenwerking tussen HelloFresh en Miljuschka Witzenhausen.Waarom voelt die combinatie eigenlijk zo logisch?Volgens Jos gaat het bij een goede merkambassadeur niet alleen om de vraag of iemand 'bij het merk past'. Interessanter is welke associatie een persoon kan toevoegen of veranderen.HelloFresh kan bij voormalige klanten bijvoorbeeld nog het beeld oproepen van wat saaie of alternatieve maaltijden. Miljuschka straalt juist plezier in eten, lekker koken en genieten uit. Daarmee kan ze precies een associatie toevoegen die het merk goed kan gebruiken.Dat brengt Bas en Jos bij Hublot, een horlogemerk dat juist bewust rebelse types aan zich bindt. Met voetbal, media, reputaties, trainers die zichzelf in de problemen praten en de vraag waarom iedereen na twee wedstrijden alweer precies weet wie er wel en niet kan voetballen.Belgast is Feyenoord-watcher voor het AD: Mikos Gouka. Met hem bespreken we het nieuwe Feyenoord, het gebrek aan geduld bij supporters, de invloed van social media en het vak van de clubwatcher. FC Merkcircus #3 – Wie betaalt de AI-rekening?AI zou bureaus efficiënter maken. Mooi verhaal, maar ondertussen lopen de kosten voor tools en tokens gewoon op. Wie gaat die rekening eigenlijk betalen? Het bureau of de klant?In aflevering 3 van FC Merkcircus duiken merkstrateeg Jos Govaart en marketingjournalist Bas Hakker weer in drie stellingen uit de wereld van merken, marketing en bureaus.Stelling 1: AI wordt pas volwassen als je de tokenkosten kunt doorbelastenBureaus investeren volop in AI, terwijl nog lang niet duidelijk is welke tools uiteindelijk blijven en hoeveel efficiency ze werkelijk opleveren. Uiteindelijk geldt ook hier: niet afgaan op je eigen smaak, maar onderzoeken of het werkt.Stelling 3: Bureaus snappen te weinig van brand equityWaarom betaalt iemand meer voor een flesje Heineken dan voor een onbekend biertje? Omdat een sterk merk financiële waarde vertegenwoordigt. Toch zijn marketeers en bureaus volgens Jos en Bas vaak veel te druk met campagnes, dashboards en kortetermijnresultaten.Merkbouw vraagt juist om een langere horizon. In addition to personal messages from family and friends, there were interviews with Professor Dame Jane Francis, Director of BAS; and Lousiane Ferlier, an archivist at the Royal Society in London who is digitizing the photographs of the first midwinter celebration during Robert Scott's discovery expedition of 1901-04. As sometimes happens, the first few words of the introduction were not transmitted: "This is the BBC World Service calling Antarctica ...".The recording is of the transmission on 12070 kHz from the BBC's Woofferton, England, transmitting station. The sender had a registered power of 300 kW with antenna beam 182 degrees. The transmission was received on a Belka-DX receiver with a Sangean ANT-60 7-metre wire antenna outdoors in Hanwell (just outside Fredericton), New Brunswick, Canada, in pseudo-synchronous (AM2) mode with 50 Hz - 2.7 kHz bandwidth. Reception was quite good with excellent signal strength but with occasional lightning burst noise and digital utility station interference. The additional parallel frequencies of 9510 kHz from Woofferton and 9460 kHz from Ascension were heard but not as well as 12070 kHz. Cuatro días después fue martirizado su diácono San Lorenzo. Entonces Lorenzo viendo que el peligro llegaba, recogió todos los dineros y demás bienes que la Iglesia tenía en Roma y los repartió entre los pobres. Y vendió los cálices de oro, copones y candeleros valiosos, y el dinero lo dio a las gentes más necesitadas. La antigua tradición dice que cuando Lorenzo vio que la Sumo Pontífice lo iban a matar le dijo: «Padre mío, ¿te vas sin llevarte a tu diácono?» y San Sixto le respondió: «Hijo mío, dentro de pocos días me seguirás». Lorenzo se alegró mucho al saber que pronto iría a gozar de la gloria de Dios. El alcalde de Roma, que era un pagano muy amigo de conseguir dinero, llamó a Lorenzo y le dijo: «Me han dicho que los cristianos emplean cálices y patenas de oro en sus sacrificios, y que en sus celebraciones tienen candeleros muy valiosos. Vaya, recoga todos los tesoros de la Iglesia y me los trae, porque el emperador necesita dinero para costear una guerra que va a empezar». Lorenzo le pidió que le diera tres días de plazo para reunir todos los tesoros de la Iglesia, y en esos días fue invitando a todos los pobres, lisiados, mendigos, huérfanos, viudas, ancianos, mutilados, ciegos y leprosos que él ayudaba con sus limosnas. Y al tercer día los hizo formar en filas, y mandó llamar al alcalde diciéndole: «Ya tengo reunidos todos los tesoros de la iglesia. Le aseguro que son más valiosos que los que posee el emperador». Llegó el alcalde muy contento pensando llenarse de oro y plata y al ver semejante colección de miseria y enfermedad se disgustó enormemente, pero Lorenzo le dijo: «¿por qué se disgusta? ¡Estos son los tesoros más apreciados de la iglesia de Cristo!». El alcalde lleno de rabia le dijo: «Pues ahora te mando matar, pero no creas que vas a morir instantáneamente. Te haré morir poco a poco para que padezcas todo lo que nunca te habías imaginado. Ya que tienes tantos deseos de ser mártir, te martirizaré horriblemente». Y encendieron una parrilla de hierro y ahí acostaron al diácono Lorenzo. San Agustín dice que el gran deseo que el mártir tenía de ir junto a Cristo le hacía no darle importancia a los dolores de esa tortura. Los cristianos vieron el rostro del mártir rodeado de un esplendor hermosísismo y sintieron un aroma muy agradable mientras lo quemaban. Los paganos ni veían ni sentían nada de eso. Después de un rato de estarse quemando en la parrilla ardiendo el mártir dijo al juez: "Ya estoy asado por un lado. Ahora que me vuelvan hacia el otro lado para quedar asado por completo". El verdugo mandó que lo voltearan y así se quemó por completo. Cuando sintió que ya estaba completamente asado exclamó: «La carne ya está lista, pueden comer». Y con una tranquilidad que nadie había imaginado rezó por la conversión de Roma y la difusión de la religión de Cristo en todo el mundo, y exhaló su último suspiro. Era el 10 de agosto del año 258. El poeta Pruedencio dice que el martirio de San Lorenzo sirvió mucho para la conversión de Roma porque la vista del valor y constancia de este gran hombre convirtió a varios senadores y desde ese día la idolatía empezó a disminuir en la ciudad. San Agustín afirma que Dios obró muchos milagros en Roma en favor de los que se encomendaban a San Lorenzo. Professor Liz Morris is a glaciologist whose work in some of the earth's most inhospitable environments has broadened humanity's understanding of climate change and polar science. Her accolades include the prestigious Polar Medal and an OBE for services to Polar Science.Liz was born in London in 1946 and family legend has it that she fell in love with snow and ice the following year during what was known as the Big Freeze - one of the most severe and punishing winters in British history. She studied physics at Bristol University and applied for a role at the British Antarctic Survey in the early Seventies. At that time the institute did not have any female scientists working in the field and her application was rejected.Liz bided her time and eventually did get to work at the BAS, becoming head of the Ice and Climate Division in 1986. The following year she became the first British woman to undertake tent-based research in Antarctica, arriving just as the ozone hole discovery was breaking. Liz completed her last field trip in 2014. In 2020 the Antarctic Place-Names Committee named a glacier in her honour. Liz divides her time between the Cotswolds and Scotland. "It's basic Scrum—but it's not basic." - Danil Chernyshev The best Product Owner Danil ever worked with was Jamie Spence, on a Master Data Management re-architecture at Canadian Tire. The goal wasn't only to upgrade a system—it was to rethink how a major retailer with many different banners should work across all of them. Jamie didn't write user stories; the BAs did that. What he did was communicate, in a super-clear way, the value expected at every step. He didn't attend every daily Scrum, but he was there whenever the team wanted him, allocating his time on demand. He cared about user experience and lived for the feedback loop—"this sprint I want to deliver this part and see how it goes." And he invited the proper stakeholders to each sprint review: a small, deliberately varied group chosen by what had been delivered and whose feedback the team actually needed. As Danil and Vasco agree, it sounds obvious—and that's exactly why it's worth celebrating. Obvious and common are not the same thing. "On paper, you have a Product Owner. But you don't have a Product Owner." - Danil Chernyshev The most common—and worst—anti-pattern Danil sees is the MIA, or "missing in action," Product Owner: a person with the title who doesn't actually own the product. Sometimes it's a BA or a tech lead wearing the label; sometimes it's someone who simply can't make decisions, or doesn't understand what they're responsible for because they're busy doing another job. The fix starts with clarity: first understand what the product even is, then put in place a Product Owner who makes decisions, owns the end-user experience, and maximizes value. Danil also flags a structural trap—one Product Owner per product, not one per team. He stretches the idea with vivid examples: an Agile coach leading a transformation is effectively the Product Owner of the process, with Scrum Masters as the developers; and Steve Jobs was the Product Owner of the iPhone while also being a customer for other Product Owners building pieces of it. Ownership is about maximizing value for the customer—not about who writes the user stories. "Developers and QAs know each other very well, but they don't trust anybody else." - Danil Chernyshev This week's coaching conversation starts with a hard situation. A subcontractor's developers—people who had always worked isolated from the business, with no plans and no communication—were brought back inside the "mother firm" as part of a digital transformation. Overnight they faced new teams, Scrum, SDLC, CI/CD, and full transparency. The developers and QAs trusted each other completely and trusted no one else: not the Scrum Master, not the Product Owner, not the BAs. Forced to estimate with story points, every story came back as a 3 or a 5, with no conversation. When Danil asked why, the answer was always "we'll discuss internally and tell you tomorrow"—he suspected a second, hidden daily Scrum without him. As he and Vasco unpack it, the real issue is transparency itself: a team used to hiding now feels exposed and doesn't know the consequences of being open. Vasco offers an experiment—build a "trio" of the Product Owner, the Scrum Master, and one friendly insider from the team to prepare refinements together. The Product Owner is always the outsider; pairing them with a trusted insider lets ideas and experiments spread faster. Before you can improve the Scrum, you first have to bring the outsiders in. Vor elf Jahren lernte die Bernerin Priska Waijers ihren heutigen Mann Bas in einer spirituellen Facebook-Gruppe kennen. Wenige Monate später zog sie für die Liebe in die historische Hafenstadt Hoorn in den Niederlanden. Priska Waijers aus Mittelhäusern (BE) war Kindergärtnerin, Lehrerin, Schauspielerin und arbeitet heute als Life-Coach. In einer internationalen Facebook-Gruppe traf sie auf den Niederländer Bas. Die beiden verstanden sich auf Anhieb. Aus langen Gesprächen wurde eine Partnerschaft fürs Leben und veränderte ihr Leben. Schon sechs Monate später entschied sich Priska Waijers einen Neuanfang in den Niederlanden zu wagen: «Wir sind zwei Seelenverwandte.» Mit Bas kamen auch seine beiden Kinder in ihr Leben. Als Priska zu ihm zog, waren sie acht und zehn Jahre alt: «Die neue Rolle als Stiefmutter stellte mich vor ungewohnte Aufgaben und war für mich Neuland.» Trotzdem wuchs die Patchwork Familie mit viel Liebe zusammen. Priska und Bas arbeiten heute gemeinsam im Coaching-Bereich und beraten Menschen bei Veränderungsprozessen und Lebensfragen: «Aus eigener Erfahrung wissen wir, wie viel Mut es manchmal braucht, neue Wege einzuschlagen.» Zurück zu den Wurzeln Nach zehn Jahren in Holland wartet das nächste Abenteuer. Priska und Bas Waijers planen die Rückkehr in die Schweiz: «Wir wollen zu meinen Eltern in Mittelhäuser (BE) und können uns so gegenseitig unterstützen.» Das Haus mit viel Land rundherum soll künftig mehrere Generationen verbinden. Watch the Devotion Based on Colossians 3:1,2 Greater Wealth I read a recent news article that outlined the discussions between the Senate Armed Services Committee, House Appropriations Committee and Congress and how they are looking at a proposed tiered military pay raise. In my honest opinion I don’t think you are paid enough for what you do, especially knowing how food insecurity can be an issue especially among junior enlisted, barracks conditions, housing affordability, issues with BAH and BAS, costs with PCS moves and quality of life challenges. I know that Congress has been trying to address these issues. The current disagreement is whether pay increases should focus on those facing the greatest financial challenges—which are junior enlisted—or should be distributed evenly. I don’t know the answer. What I do know is that a lot of you did not join our nation’s military to become wealthy. Some of you joined because you want to serve. Others joined for the ability to pay for continuing education later in life. Still others joined to learn skills in a vocation that would transition well into the civilian world. Even though you didn’t join the military to become wealthy, you can still fall into one of these two ditches when it comes to money and wealth. The one ditch is that you trust too much in your wealth, when you look to your wealth as your security. The other ditch is despair when it appears that you are not receiving your daily bread. This is why Jesus gave us the Lord's Prayer, specifically the fourth petition. When we pray, “Give us today our daily bread,” we trust our Father to do just that: Father, give us what you promise! And we will rest content with what he so graciously provides us. Part of that petition includes prayers for your government, which provides your housing and food, and so we pray for wisdom for our leaders. Out of all the temptations Jesus warns us about, he focuses the most on wealth and money, because he knows what a trap the love of money can be for his people. Today, he calls us to repent, and then to look to Christ who never fell into either ditch. He rested perfectly contented in his Father's ability to provide. This is your true treasure, your true wealth: Christ Jesus. Earthly wealth comes and goes, but forgiveness—the cancellation of all your debt to God—the resurrection from the dead, life eternal, the strength to continue here on this earth until that day comes, that is priceless. Listen to the Apostle Paul's encouragement in Colossians 3:1,2, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ. . . set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Keep Christ in your hearts as your most prized possession. Prayer: Father, you provide all that we need for our bodies. Help us to trust you to do what you promise us. Move us to seek the greater treasures you pour out on us in your Word, our baptisms, your Holy Supper, so that we might obtain Christ, our greatest wealth. Provide for our service members so that they are never in want. Grant wisdom to our Congress and our president as they work on a budget that will adequately support all ranks of war fighters in our nation's military. We trust in you, through Jesus. Amen.
