For our year-end discussion of 2025 books, we're joined by Locus reviewers Ian Mond and Alex Pierce, and distinguished critic and novelist James Bradley. As usual, we mention a lot of authors and titles, and probably forget to mention many deserving others. But you'll no doubt find some suggestions you hadn't thought of, and some of our usual digressions about familiar questions of genre, literary ambition, and books that at least some of us think have been overlooked. Alex's list Adrian Tchaikovsky, Shroud Claire North, Slow Gods Darkly Lem, Transmentation | Transgression EJ Swift, When There Are Wolves Again Alastair Reynolds, Halcyon Years Emily Tesh, The Incandescent The Isle in the Silver Sea, Tasha Surii Ian's list Mark Danielewski, Tom's Crossing Alex Pheby, Waterblack Isaac Fellman, Notes from a Regicide Nnedi Okorafor, Death of the Author Nick Mamatas, Kalivas! James's list Claire North, Slow Gods EJ Swift, When There Are Wolves Again Laila Lalami, The Dream Hotel Nina Allan, A Granite Silence Sarah Hall, Helm Catherine Chidgey, The Book of Guilt. See you all in early 2026 with something new! And thank you to Alex, Ian, and James for making time to talk to us. We hope you enjoy the episode.
In On Microfascism: Gender, War, and Death (Common Notions, 2022) Dr. Jack Z. Bratich explores the cultural elements in American society that support fascism. Microfascism appears in many aspects of culture engaging consumers to think of others and their own self in ways that extend fascism into everyday life while constantly adapting to cultural and political change. Beyond the cultural aspects of microfascism, Bratich also explores how it organizes seemingly unrelated groups who, at times, work together for specific actions aimed at furthering fascist political goals. By looking at the specifically gendered formations of microfascism, Bratich shows the misogyny at the core of the larger fascist project that is geared to “eliminate” those needed to fulfill the “restoration” of some past glory. On Microfascism combines insights from fascism studies and cultural studies scholarship with contemporary examples from current events and popular culture to show the microfascism embedded in American society, already primed for violence. But even though this microfascism can be found throughout American culture and politics, Brartich argues that it is fragile and can be countered with micro-antifascism. Due to the misogyny at the core of fascism and microfascism, political and cultural movements grounded in feminism are the places to most effectively perform micro-antifascism. Jack Z. THE DEATH OF CICERO Colleague Josiah Osgood. Following Caesar's death, Cicero returns to politics to oppose Mark Antony, delivering the "Philippics" and allying with young Octavian. This strategy backfires when Octavianreconciles with Antony, leading to a kill order against Cicero for his anti-Caesar rhetoric. Cicero is assassinated, possibly meeting his death with theatrical heroism by extending his neck to the soldiers, a scene likely popularized by his loyal secretary Tiro. NUMBER 8 1880 ASSASSINATION

Friends of the Rosary,Yesterday, we honored St. Stephen, who by his words and by laying down his life for his faith, bore witness to Christ. Today, December 27, we receive the testimony of John, Apostle and Evangelist (d. 101).The Church celebrates the Feast of this Galilean fisherman born in Bethsaida, son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother to St. James the Greater, who became the beloved disciple of Jesus.John and James were called by Jesus to be disciples as they were mending their nets by the Sea of Galilee. The pure and spiritual life of John kept him very close to Jesus and Mary, resting on the Master's breast at the Last Supper and being filled with divine wisdom. He wrote the fourth Gospel (about sixty-three years after the Ascension of Christ), three Epistles, and an excellent and mysterious Book of the Apocalypse or Revelation.John is the evangelist of the divinity and fraternal love of Christ. With James, his brother, and Simon Peter, he was one of the witnesses of the Transfiguration. He was permitted to witness His agony in the Garden. At the foot of the cross, Jesus entrusted His Mother to his care as He hung dying on the Cross.St. John was the only one of the Apostles who did not forsake the Savior in the hour of His Passion and Death. He was brought to Rome and, according to tradition, cast into a caldron of boiling oil by Emperor Domitian's order, but he was miraculously preserved unhurt. He was later exiled to the Island of Patmos, where he wrote the Apocalypse. In his extreme old age, he continued to visit the churches of Asia. Every time he preached, he said: "My dear children, love one another."St. John died in peace at about ninety-four years old at Ephesus in the hundredth year of the Christian era, or the sixty-sixth from the crucifixion of Christ.Ave MariaCome, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkNew Upgrade! Dolly Parton BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Dolly Parton, the indomitable queen of country at 79, just squashed death rumors with her signature sparkle and sass. On Wednesday, December 24, she posted a lively Instagram video from the Grand Ole Opry recording booth, decked out in full Christmas glam, declaring, "Do I look sick to you? I'm working hard here. I ain't dead yet!" According to AOL reports, this came hours after her sister Frieda sparked panic on Facebook, praying for Dolly who "hasn't been feeling her best lately," though Frieda quickly clarified it was just a minor bug and no cause for alarm. Parton opened up about health hiccups since her husband Carl Dean's death in March—nothing major, she insisted, but enough to prompt treatments near home and the big postponement of her first Las Vegas residency in 32 years. On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David's claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” New episodes of Death and Deceit in Alliance will be available every Tuesday and Friday starting on December 2 wherever you get your podcasts. To binge the entire season, ad-free, subscribe to True Crime Clubhouse on Apple podcasts.

THE FLIGHT TO PELLA AND MARY'S DEATH Colleague James Tabor. Tabor discusses the Christian flight to Pella during the Roman revolt. He speculates Mary died before this event, likely around 49–63 CE, and was buried on Mount Zion. Consequently, she disappears from the New Testament record, which shifts focus to Peter and Paul after the Jerusalem church's dispersal. NUMBER 6

Manex Ibar feels like ancient wisdom wrapped in warmth, wonder and a major dose of otherworldly badassness. A mystic, shaman, and visionary entrepreneur, he bridges sacred tradition with evolutionary science, guiding individuals and organizations to awaken higher consciousness and remember who they truly are. It was such an honor to welcome him back to Intimate Conversations to close season 13, "Heart Broken Open." Our dialogue was a tapestry of mysticism, science, and raw humanity — exploring near-death initiations, divine downloads, and the creation of his revolutionary system, The Sphinx Code. In this extraordinary and soul-stirring conversation we explored how Manex's life has been shaped by profound initiations, from being struck by lightning to literally drowning and being brought back to life with the help of a whale. He shared how these experiences opened channels of divine communication and seeded his lifelong devotion to integrating ancient teachings with modern understanding. We explored the origin story of the Sphinx Code, a system he downloaded that weaves together archetypal psychology, sacred geometry, numerology, and the Fibonacci sequence. It maps the subconscious architecture of the soul and reveals each person's unique blueprint for transformation. What began as a mystical insight became a tangible app and oracle system that has transformed lives worldwide. Manex revealed how the Tarot, once dismissed by him as a "fun game," became a sacred frequency map guiding human evolution. He described how each archetype vibrates with a specific frequency, forming a dance between the masculine and feminine energies within us. Together, we looked at my own Sphinx Code chart — and how "Death," my harmony card, symbolizes transformation, transcendence, and the pure joy of spiritual rebirth. He spoke of meeting his wife, Victoria, and how her mathematical and astrological brilliance expanded the Sphinx Code by integrating it with the I Ching, Kabbalah, and astrology. Their co-creation revealed that wisdom is not meant to be owned but shared, evolving through union and humility. We also touched on the sacred lessons of being human — divorce, fatherhood, and love as initiation. Manex shared how heartbreak, like the lightning and the waves, can strip us bare only to reconnect us to the Divine pulse of life. He reminded us that pain can be sacred when it humbles the ego and reawakens devotion to purpose. This conversation is a portal — a remembrance that we are each an unfolding code of consciousness, pulsing with divine intelligence. It invites you to honor both your mystical and human nature, to dance between the seen and unseen, and to live as your full embodied light. You can explore your own archetypal blueprint and the Sphinx Code at sphinxcode.com. ➡️ Go check out patreon.com/allanapratt for Exclusive content! What we say matters—especially at Christmas. In this week's More Than Conquerors, Terry and Reneé Mize teach how covenant words release God's authority, provision, and victory into real-world situations. From faith-filled speech to generous hearts, you'll see how God uses words spoken in faith to fuel compassion, missions, and Kingdom impact around the world. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we're reminded that covenant authority didn't end in Scripture—it's meant to be spoken, believed, and lived today. Learn how your words can align with God's promises and produce lasting fruit.
In this interview I am joined by Dr Thomas Clough Daffern, philosopher, educator, peace activist, and peace officer for the Council of British Druid Orders. Dr Daffern explains the meaning of Christmas and the Winter Solstice, reflects on cyclic time and indigenous wisdom, and shares his own recent reckonings with death and loss. Dr Daffern reveals the esoteric and mythic symbolism of the Christmas tree, mistletoe, gift giving, and even Father Christmas himself. Dr Daffern also shares his thoughts on the current world situation, why he is an optimist about the future of civilisation, and why he believes it is the moral duty of those with knowledge and power to share it with the world. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep339-christmas-the-winter-solstice-dr-thomas-clough-daffern Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics Include: 00:00 - Intro 00:50 - How Thomas spends this time of year 03:02 - The worst year of Thomas' life 04:19 - Death of Thomas' daughter 07:30 - Reckoning with death 10:14 - What the traditions say about the current world situation 12:14 - Druids and cyclical time 12:52 - Increasing wisdom in the world 13:18 - Sophia-phobia 15:11 - Why Thomas is an optimist about the future 18:07 - The meaning of Winter Solstice 18:12 - Christmas and Mithraism 19:34 - Megalithic civilisations and prehistorical religion 25:39 - The Golden Bough and indigenous European wisdom 26:54 - Death and rebirth 29:21 - Rituals and symbols of Christmas 31:23 - Symbolism of the Christmas tree 33:34 - The meaning of “Christmas” 34:31 - Symbolism of mistletoe 35:40 - Symbolism of present giving 36:37 - Thomas comments on peace in the Middle East 37:59 - Is symbolism and the esoteric only for an elite minority? 41:29 - The aristocratic hippy and sharing wisdom 42:37 - The moral duty to share knowledge and power 44:52 - Symbolism of Father Christmas / Santa Claus 46:15 - Concluding thoughts … Previous episodes with Dr Thomas Clough Daffern: - https://www.guruviking.com/search?q=daffern … To find our more about Dr Thomas Clough Daffern, visit: - https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-clough-daffern-phd-6a3463a - https://interfaithpeacetreaty.wordpress.com/ … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

Learn how by mid-December, 1776, the American Revolution was in desperate straits. Explore that after a series of defeats, the American Army had retreated through New Jersey and was stationed in Pennsylvania — with the British Army across the Delaware River. The Continental Army was on the verge of utter collapse.Overconfident, the British went into Winter Quarters. Congress gave George Washington enormous authority, and Washington used the lull in fighting and his new power to reorganize and strengthen his troops. Washington and his officers designed a daring attack on Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. Before the battle, Washington inspired the troops through the reading of Thomas Paine's American Crisis. Follow Washington's troops through the winter storm, the crossing of the nearly frozen Delaware River, an arduous march, and the pitched battle. The fate of the new nation depends on it.Through divine intervention, Washington was able to mount a surprise attack on the hated Hessian troops in Trenton, winning an improbable victory, which became a critical turning point in the war.Highlights include David Hackett Fisher, Washington's Crossing, James McPherson, Christmas 1776, Delaware River, Hessian soldiers, Trenton New Jersey, Your Excellency, Battle of Bunker Hill, Battle of Long Island a/k/a the Battle of Brooklyn a/k/a/ the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, Continental Army, Brooklyn Heights, Battle of Harlem Heights, New York City, Thomas Paine, Common Sense, General Charles Lee, General William Howe, The American Crisis, Federalist Papers, Pennsylvania Journal, Second Continental Congress, Henry Steel Commager, Richard B. Chances are you've felt interrupted a time or two this Christmas season; you had a plan and then you watched it fall apart. And chances are your life is not what you thought it would be. Various interruptions interrupted the path you prepared. And yet, God works through interruption. God shows up, usually when we least expect it, like a knock at the door, like the crying out of a little baby, like receiving good news when we've heard nothing but bad news. And tonight God interrupts your life and my life once again with the promise of the Gospel: A new day is breaking. Light shines in the darkness. Death is defeated. No matter what you do or leave undone, no matter how many plans come to fruition or fall apart, God refuses to being anything other than God with you.

“There's no such thing as steps,” and “they were two peas in a pod.” These are statements made by Anna Kepner's grandparents who were with her on the cruise when she died. Her body was found under the mattress and her cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation. Which is what makes this comment particularly odd to some netizens...because Anna's grandparents are referring to her relationship with her 16 year old step brother. The very step brother who was the only other person in the room around the estimated time of death. The very step brother who is now a suspect in Anna's murder. They are not the only suspicious adults in this case though. Anna's biological father and her step mother, the mother of the 16 yo step brother, who were also on the cruise with the family were seen over a month after Anna's murder, walking from court, their faces completely blank yet gripping each other's hands.Anna's father has just lost his daughter yet he seemingly appears closer than ever to his wife and the mother of the murder suspect. This is part two of the Anna Kepner cruise ship murder. Full show notes available at RottenMangoPodcast.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. PREVIEW PTOLEMY I: THE GENIUS WHO UNIFIED GREEK AND EGYPTIAN CULTURES Colleague Professor Toby Wilkinson. Wilkinson characterizes Ptolemy I as a genius who unified Greek and Egyptian cultures following Alexander the Great's death. By employing diverse advisors and inventing the hybrid god Serapis, Ptolemy Isuccessfully forged a single identity from many strands, effectively implementing an ancient version of e pluribus unum.
Professor Toby Wilkinson. Alexander the Great besieged Gaza, dragging its governor to death to mimic Achilles and signal his dominance. Seeking divine validation, he trekked to the Siwa Oasis, where priests confirmed him as the son of Zeus Ammon. He later founded Alexandria, orienting Egypt toward the Mediterranean. 1842 EGYPT
