A condemned man stands on a railroad bridge, a noose around his neck, dreaming of escape. Ambrose Bierce's 1891 tale “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” remains one of the darkest and most unforgettable short stories ever written.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: It's Thriller Thursday – and this week I'm bringing you three tales of fiction. I'll share a short story that has been described as "one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature" – it's “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by the legendary Ambrose Bierce, from 1890. I have a classic creepypasta from 2016 that many people mistakenly believe is a true story because it is so well written. It's “The Strange Case of Edmonson Kentucky” by Joe Terrell. But first, it's a short story of fiction as told by one of the hardest-working writers I know, as she is always posting new stories on Facebook: Christina Skelton. It's a story from April 2020 titled simply, “The Ghost Bus”.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00.00.000 = Show Open00:01:31.892 = “The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton00:11:29.476 = “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce * 00:34:43.528 = “The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell *01:02:22.710 = Show CloseSOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/uu4acekx“The Ghost Bus” by Christina Skelton: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/phupb8p4“The Strange Case of Edmonson, Kentucky” by Joe Terrell: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/sdtru243=====(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. **This programme contains discriminatory language** On Greece's Mount Athos, the most holy site in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, lies a rift in the faith. For more than 20 years, a banned monastery has operated illegally and at times violently towards their sacred community. Nikos Papanikolaou visits these excommunicated monks ready to become martyrs in order to protect their ultra-orthodox way of life. The inhabitants of Esphigmenou monastery are known as Greece's "rebel monks". Living on a remote peninsula in the north of the country, they are holed up in their fortress-like monastery, emblazoned with a banner reading "Orthodoxy or Death". This schismatic brotherhood broke away from the mainstream church decades ago, an act which has led to their excommunication and violent clashes with police after attempts to evict them from their monastery. Nikos Papanikolaou travels to Mount Athos to meet Esphigmenou's leader, Abbot Methodios. This episode of The Documentary, comes to you from Heart and Soul, exploring personal approaches to spirituality from around the world.

CannCon and Alpha Warrior break down Pete Hegseth's fiery address at the Pentagon and President Trump's uncompromising call to restore America's military. From tearing out DEI and climate cult nonsense to reinstating hard PT tests, real boot camp ass-whoopings, and merit-based promotions, this episode digs into what a true warfighting force should look like. The hosts debate modern combat, proxy wars, guerrilla threats, and the Deep State's manipulation of global conflicts, all while swapping raw stories from their own service. With humor, blunt honesty, and no patience for fat generals or weak standards, CannCon and Alpha deliver a veteran's perspective on rebuilding a lethal, disciplined, and unapologetically American military.

We learn what McDonald's claims Grimace is, and why Susie thinks they are lying and doing revisionist history for lolz. Sarah found out a fun fact about the David statue, but she is convinced it's a Mandela Effect situation. We learn why Disney theme parks are no longer trying to be affordable in any way, and they are fully embracing income inequality. Plus, Sarah teaches us roller coaster lingo. Ellen Greenberg Didn't Kill Herself — And This Hulu Doc Proves It She was 27. A beloved teacher. Engaged. Planning a future. And then, she was found on the kitchen floor with 20 stab wounds — including 10 in her back and neck — and a knife buried in her chest. The official ruling? Suicide. Now, more than a decade later, the new Hulu docuseries Death in Apartment 603 is turning that narrative inside out. And in this episode of Hidden Killers Live, we're breaking down exactly what it reveals — and why this case is unraveling in real time. The evidence? It's brutal, graphic, and impossible to ignore. We've got a 911 call where the fiancé preemptively blames Ellen before attempting CPR. A crime scene that was released and professionally cleaned within hours. Devices removed by a politically connected family member. And a death that was originally ruled a homicide by the medical examiner — until police pressured it into becoming a suicide. This isn't just about what happened in that apartment. It's about what happened after — how institutions failed, how truth got rewritten, and how a grieving family has spent 14 years screaming into a system that refused to listen. In this segment, we're not just reacting to the doc — we're pulling the threads that were buried for years. We're laying out the timeline, the autopsy contradictions, the mental health manipulation, and the bureaucratic blindfold that kept this case from ever being investigated as the homicide it clearly appeared to be. If you've followed the Ellen Greenberg case, this will make your blood boil. If you haven't — it's time you see what everyone's been trying to hide. This is what it looks like when the evidence screams… and no one listens. Sam Goldberg, Ellen Greenberg's fiancé at the time of her death, has never been charged with any crime in connection to this case. He has consistently maintained that Ellen's death was a suicide. All individuals mentioned in this segment are presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
From Teacher to Tragedy: Breaking Down Ellen Greenberg's Mental State | Psych Expert Weighs In Was Ellen Greenberg's death the result of a private mental health spiral — or a sign of something far more sinister? In this deeply psychological episode of Hidden Killers Live, we're joined by psychotherapist Shavaun Scott to explore the emotional and behavioral profile of Ellen Greenberg as portrayed in the new Hulu documentary Death in Apartment 603. We begin not with the crime scene — but with the person. Ellen was a 27-year-old first-grade teacher, beloved by her students and deeply connected to her family and friends. She was newly engaged. Planning a wedding. Dreaming of a family. So how did we go from that… to 20 stab wounds and a suicide ruling? In this episode, we walk through three major psychological layers of the case:
This Changes Everything: What the Ellen Greenberg Doc Just Revealed & What's Next? This case was buried under paperwork, silence, and a suicide label. Until now. In this revealing episode of Hidden Killers Live, host Tony Brueski sits down with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott to explore what the Hulu documentary Death in Apartment 603 has exposed — and what the psychological profile of Ellen Greenberg actually tells us. Ellen was found with 20 stab wounds, including 10 to the back of her neck, and no history of self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or major depression. The documentary lays bare what had been kept in the shadows for years — and now, Shavaun helps us walk through the emotional truth behind the evidence. We dig into what this story reveals about: Ellen's emotional withdrawal: Why she suddenly pulled back from her life — and what she may have been signaling The clinical record: Three sessions with a psychiatrist. No ideation. A future she was planning. So how did “anxiety” get weaponized as the reason she's gone? The crime scene: Cleaned within 24 hours. Devices taken before police could retrieve them. A homicide ruling reversed without new evidence. And then we get to the deeper trauma: What happens to a family when the official story doesn't just feel wrong — it is wrong? What happens when the institutions you're supposed to trust look you in the eye and say, “Move on”? This segment doesn't just revisit the case — it reveals why the public was misled, how a suicide narrative was institutionalized, and what it actually takes to dismantle that lie after more than a decade of damage. Watch this episode and ask yourself — what else have we been told to accept that never made psychological sense in the first place? Sam Goldberg, Ellen Greenberg's fiancé at the time of her death, has never been charged with any crime in connection to this case. He has consistently maintained that Ellen's death was a suicide. All individuals mentioned in this segment are presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.

April 3, 2004. La Cygne, Kansas. 23-year old Alonzo Brooks vanishes while attending a party at a farmhouse and his body is discovered on the banks of a nearby creek nearly one month later. While a forensic pathologist is unable to determine Alonzo's exact cause of death, rumours start circulating that he was the victim of a hate crime before his body was placed at that location. In 2021, after Alonzo's body is exhumed and given a new autopsy, it is announced that his death has officially been reclassified as a homicide. Who was responsible for killing Alonzo Brooks and what was the motive for his murder? If his death wasn't a hate crime, what did actually happen to him?

In “Private Fleet Net Zero: The Deadhead is Dead”, Joe Lynch and Russell Jones, CEO & Co-founder of Private Fleet Net Zero, discuss how PFNZ is using AI to eliminate the deadhead of private fleets, turning empty miles into profitable, superior capacity while simultaneously driving significant progress toward net zero. About Russ Jones Russell Jones co-founded Private Fleet Net Zero to help the 45% of trucks that are in Private Fleets with usually empty backhauls find loads from $50B+ of 3PL freight spend, leveraging his leadership of Cargo Chief, which enables 1,200+ 3PL buyers with $8B+ of spend to buy transportation capacity more profitably. Previously, Mr. Jones co-founded and led two cloud-based physical security firms. He was also the founding CEO of Clearvox Communications, which pioneered the market for cellular phone headsets, which he sold to Plantronics. Beforehand at Adaptec, Mr. Jones doubled a $50M channel products business to $100M. Mr. Jones has been awarded 10 patents, and holds a BSBA with highest honors from Boston University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. About Private Fleet Net Zero Private Fleet Net Zero, PFNZ, is uniquely aggregating 10,000s of trucks with 1,000s of lanes of underutilized, underpriced, theft-free and superior private and dedicated fleet trucking capacity and matching via multi patent-pending technologies and artificial intelligence to $10Bs of freight spend registered on our cloud-based platform, while generating a compelling client ROI. Our network is quickly and efficiently growing both fleets and 3PLs on PFNZ, which is on a path to save 30M+ tree equivalents. Key Takeaways: Private Fleet Net Zero: The Deadhead In “Private Fleet Net Zero: The Deadhead is Dead”, Joe Lynch and Russell Jones, CEO & Co-founder of Private Fleet Net Zero, discuss how PFNZ is using AI to eliminate the deadhead of private fleets, turning empty miles into profitable, superior capacity while simultaneously driving significant progress toward net zero. The Death of the Deadhead: The core problem PFNZ addresses is the massive inefficiency of empty backhauls ("deadhead"), which characterizes nearly 45% of the total US trucking capacity operated by private fleets. The episode explains how eliminating this waste is the key to both operational profit and environmental sustainability. The $10B Capacity Solution: PFNZ is uniquely aggregating tens of thousands of private fleet trucks, transforming previously unused lanes into a powerful network. This new capacity is highly desirable to buyers, described by PFNZ as "underpriced, theft-free, and superior." AI-Driven Efficiency: Russ Jones details how multi-patent-pending technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are essential to the solution. The AI efficiently matches this newly aggregated capacity with the $10Bs of freight spend from 3PLs registered on their platform. The Sustainability ROI: The episode connects logistics efficiency directly to environmental impact. By eliminating empty miles, PFNZ is on a path to save the equivalent of 30 million+ trees, demonstrating that net-zero goals can be achieved through fundamental changes in transportation economics. Unlocking New Profit Centers: For private fleet operators, the partnership generates a "compelling client ROI" by turning what was a sunk-cost (the empty backhaul) into a profitable revenue-generating leg, fundamentally changing the economics of fleet ownership. A Proven Disruptor at the Helm: Russ Jones brings a deep history of tech entrepreneurship and market disruption, having pioneered the cellular headset market (Clearvox/Plantronics) and successfully built cloud-based physical security firms. His decade of experience leading Cargo Chief provides the foundation for integrating private fleet capacity with the existing 3PL freight market. Leveraging Existing Market Structures: The platform's success is built on Jones's knowledge of the brokerage world, leveraging his previous experience at Cargo Chief, which currently enables over 1,200 3PL buyers with more than $8 billion in annual spend, ensuring rapid adoption and integration. In this episode we talk about the process of death, and touch on many of the questions and decisions that need to be made, so that you can be prepared if and when death affects your family. It's a step away from our usual mortuary and embalming talk, but after speaking with hundreds and hundreds of people, we have realised that most people first encounter their local funeral director when they are forced into planning the funeral of a loved one who has died. Unfortunately, this is not the best time, when shrouded by loss and grief, to be making snap decisions on inclusions that will shape the way your person is farewelled, and remembered. So what we are saying to you is this - get educated. Know what your choices are before you are in this situation. And, if possible, know what your loved ones - your parents, spouse or partner, siblings and kids would want for their final sendoff, long before those decisions need to be acted upon.We mention the Natural Death Care Centre in this pod, so as promised, here is the link: www.naturaldeathcarecentre.orgWe hope you enjoy this pod. For many, autumn is a season of beauty—colorful leaves, crisp air, and cozy traditions. But as our daily prayer and devotional remind us, for others, the season can reopen deep wounds of grief. Losing a loved one during this time can make every falling leaf feel like a reminder of what has been lost. Grief is not something to hide or feel ashamed of—it is the natural expression of love for someone who is no longer here. Jesus’ words in the Beatitudes assure us that those who mourn are not abandoned in their pain. Instead, God promises His presence and comfort in the midst of sorrow. The Lord draws near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 147:3) and faithfully carries us when grief feels unbearable. Over time, He not only comforts us but also equips us to comfort others in their mourning (2 Corinthians 1:3-5). In this way, even our deepest pain can become a vessel of compassion and encouragement. If autumn carries grief for you, know that you are not alone. God’s light still shines through the darkness, and His presence offers hope and healing—even in the hardest seasons. Today's Bible Verse: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4 (NIV) Key Takeaways Grief is a natural and holy expression of love—it is nothing to be ashamed of. God promises to comfort those who mourn (Matthew 5:4). The Lord draws close to the brokenhearted and heals our wounds (Psalm 147:3). Our own grief can equip us to extend comfort and empathy to others in pain. Let’s Pray Together Dear Jesus, autumn feels full of grief this year. Please help me to accept my sorrow as a reflection of love and not push it away. Surround me with Your comfort, fill my heart with Your hope, and help me to see glimpses of beauty even in my pain. Use my story to encourage others walking through grief, and remind me that You are always near. Amen.
