This week, in New Britain, Connecticut, what starts out as a missing woman, who police assmue was killed by her dirtbag boyfriend, turns into a massive investigation, that has nothing to do with that boyfriend. They uncover seven bodies, and they are linked to a man, who lives in his van, which he calls "the murder mobile". He eventually tells all his sick secrets, incling how he planted "seeds" in his "murder garden"!!   Along the way, we find out that when crime is up, just rename a street "Little Poland", that if you don't want to be considered a serial killer, you probably shouldn't give yourself a killer's nickname, and that no matter how many times you say you don't like murder, if you kill 7 people, you like murder!!   New episodes, every Wednesday & Friday nights!!   Donate at patreon.com/crimeinsports or at paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.com Go to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder, Crime In Sports & Your Stupid Opinions!   Follow us on... instagram.com/smalltownmurder facebook.com/smalltownpod   Also, check out James & Jimmie's other shows, Crime In Sports & Your Stupid Opinions on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!!

Sarah went camping with her family and it was predictably calamitous in the best way possible. We hear why kids don't ride bikes anymore, parents are chauffeurs, and why it matters. We talk about how much camp meant to Sarah growing up and then as a counselor, and we lament that tragedy in Texas at the Christian camp. Sarah explains why customer service is so bad now, why you shouldn't accept it, and what you can do about it. What is death anxiety?  We spend the first 15 minutes of the podcast addressing this question.  And maybe this was unfair to our guests, the fabulous dynamic duo of palliative psychiatrists Dani Chammas and Keri Brenner (listen to their prior podcasts on therapeutic presence and the angry patient).  After all, we invited them on to our podcast to discuss death anxiety, then Eric and I immediately questioned if death anxiety was the best term for what we want to discuss! Several key points stood out to me from this podcast, your key points may differ: The “anxiety” in “death anxiety” is not a pathological phenomenon or a DSM diagnosis;  it references an existential concern that is fundamental to the human experience .  To me,” awareness of mortality” might be a better term, but in fairness, the idea of “death anxiety” was coined well before the formal establishment of “anxiety disorders.” The ways in which death anxiety manifests in our patient's choices and behaviors varies tremendously, and our responses as clinicians must be individualized. There is no “one size fits all” approach. In one example Dani discusses, a pain level of 1.5/10 might be overwhelming, because for a patient  in remission from cancer any pain might signal return of cancer.  Some manifestations of death anxiety can be debilitating, others lead to tremendous personal growth, connection to others, and a drive toward finding meaning in their illness experience.   Death anxiety impacts us as clinicians, not only through countertransference, that word that I still can't define (sorry Dani and Keri!), but also through our own unexamined fears about death. As clinicians who regularly care for people who are dying, we might find ourselves becoming “used to” death. Is this a sign that we are inured to the banality of death, and less able to empathize with the death anxiety experienced by our patients or their families? Or could it reflect our acceptance of the finitude of life, prompting us to live in the present moment? Perhaps it is something else entirely. The key is that looking inwards to understanding our own unique relationship with mortality can deepen our ability to authentically accompany the experiences of our patients. I mean, don't fear the reaper, right?  Sorry, no cowbell in my version, but you do get my son Kai, home from college, on guitar for the audio only podcast version. *Folks, this IS a Tangent Heavy episode. So if you're someone vehemently against taking the scenic route, you will almost certainly not enjoy this episode (or 90% of this show if we're being honest). Toodles.* There's something about urban legends that sticks to the skin. You hear them once—around a campfire, at a sleepover, whispered down a darkened hallway—and they never quite leave you. They're the stories we half-believe, even when we swear we don't. The ones we dare each other to test, knowing deep down that something might be listening. This week, we're pulling back the curtain on some of the most infamous legends that have haunted us for generations. But these aren't just stories told to scare. Behind each one lies a sliver of truth—a real event, a real person, a real moment in time when the ordinary world cracked open and let something else in. From a killer lurking in lovers' lanes with a hook for a hand, to a man in a rabbit suit wielding an axe in the woods of Virginia… from ghostly girls who vanish from car seats to the blood-soaked face you might just see staring back from your mirror—these tales didn't come from nowhere. And tonight, we're digging up the roots. So sit back, Settle in, And remember—every legend starts with someone, somewhere, who swears… it really happened. We hope all our Creeps and Peeper are also unsettled by our tales this week. Dan starts off in  North Carolina with a story about a man who tried to transform into an actual demon. And some think he was, in a way, successful. Then, his second tale is the story of some of the residents of a housing development outside of Houston, built on a forgotten cemetery, who claim that the spirits of those whose remains were disrespected were both awakened and angered by the destruction of their final resting place. Lynze has three stories today! Her first also takes us to Texas where a strange situation occurs with a neighbor. Then, a woman traveling alone has the creepiest taxi ride to her hotel. Lastly, a young boy runs into the former owner of his Grandmother's home. Scared To Death Merch: Exciting new merch is up in the store! Today, I'm joined by one of the architects of modern Superman lore — Dan Jurgens. From crafting The Death of Superman to introducing two of the most iconic villains in the mythos — Doomsday and Hank Henshaw, the Cyborg Superman — Dan's work continues to define the Man of Steel for generations of readers. We break down his brand-new 80-page, treasury-sized Superman special, drawn by Bruno Redondo, and how this oversized story captures the timeless ideals of truth and hope at the heart of the character. We also talk about James Gunn's new Superman film, how it reflects or deviates from the core mythology, and Dan's thoughts on Superman's evolving presence in pop culture. Plus, a sneak peek at Dan's upcoming DC mini-series "Bat-Man: The Second Knight" with artist Mike Perkins — an Elseworlds-style tale that takes 1930 Bruce Wayne down a dramatically different path.

With nearly two decades of experience, John brings a nuanced view of the high-yield landscape—unpacking how today's market dynamics differ from the past and why public credit might offer better liquidity, lower fees, and fewer structural risks than private credit.   From the shifting credit quality of high-yield indices to the limitations of passive investing in this space, this episode is packed with actionable insights for institutional allocators. SUMMARY: The conversation is centered around Lisa Espinoza's experience with child loss, focusing on her son, Chandler.  Lisa shares that Chandler was adventurous and lived life fully, participating in various activities and sports. Chandler had a philosophy of life and was deeply affectionate and protective of others, never meeting a stranger. Lisa recounts the tragic accident that led to Chandler's passing and the subsequent 18 days of struggle before his death on January 1, 2019. The grief process for Lisa involved accepting the loss, processing pain, adjusting to life without Chandler, and maintaining a connection with him. She emphasizes the importance of not minimizing grief and allowing oneself to feel all emotions, including anger and sorrow.  Lisa discusses honoring Chandler's memory through writing a book and helping others who have experienced similar loss. She finds joy in simple moments and believes in the possibility of joy coexisting with grief. Lisa encourages others to accept help from friends and community and to remain open to moments of joy. The conversation concludes with a focus on finding purpose and meaning after loss and the importance of inviting joy into one's life. PODCAST INTRO: Guest, Lisa Espinoza is an author, coach and a speaker. She stops by the show today to share her personal story of child loss, grief and finding joy even in the midst of great pain. The process of grief is as different as the person it comes upon but none-the-less we can find incredible value because shared story is how grieving hearts find encouragement. Child loss is an indescribable pain that no parent wishes to be part of. For Lisa, the loss of her son Chandler was a life-altering event that reshaped her world in countless ways. Lisa shares a heartfelt conversation of her experiences, providing us with a glimpse into a love that will never end coupled with the grief that accompanies the loss of a child. Her story is one of resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief in the power of connection both with having Christ as your foundation and staying connected to life by way of offering practices of remembrance whether that be spontaneously and deliberately. You'll hear Lisa's reflection on Chandler's adventurous spirit, the kind of person who embraced life with open arms and an open heart. Chandler was one of the four children that Lisa and her husband have (and I do say have because the fact that Chandler is their son will never change)…, a son who brought joy and chaos in equal measure (If you're raising boys you'll know exactly what she's talking about when she shares those examples). You'll definitely see that Chandler lived life to the fullest. The journey of grief is a roller coaster ride at best, yet it is also a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Lisa's approach to grief involved reclining in the Lord and trusting Him to be with her through the dark valley. With God beside her, she decided to embrace the pain and allowed herself to feel deeply. She talked about other healthy ways of processing emotions and pain whether through counseling, writing, or simply sitting with the emotions; maybe with trusted friend who can bear that type of weight (in a healthy way). By accepting the loss and finding ways to adjust to a world without Chandler, Lisa not only finds encouragement for each day but peace and dare I say it (in this context of grief), she finds joy that honors her son's adventurous spirit. In her quest to find meaning amidst the sorrow, Lisa found purpose in helping others navigate their grief (her coaching services). Her writings, initially shared on a blog, became a source of comfort for many, offering a candid and raw portrayal of her journey. Through her words, Lisa provides a lifeline to those who feel isolated in their pain, reinforcing the knowledge that they are not alone. Because of the response she was receiving from her blog posts, she decided to published her story and it is now available to anyone who would love to be encourage (link below). Her story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, the possibility of joy and connection can light the way forward. Lisa Espinoza's story is a poignant testament to the enduring power of love and the human capacity to heal and find meaning amidst profound loss. Her journey through grief is a beacon of hope, showing that even in the face of unimaginable pain, you are never alone and you can trust God to know the way through. THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE:" THE DEATH OF LOVE, WITH MARVIN GAYE AND LINDA AND RICHARD THOMPSON. DOUBLE DOWN!!

    ---

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2025 11:01

Love is mysterious, and the death of love even more so: it's complicated, sticky, and heart breaking. When there are children impacted, as was the case with Marvin and Anna Gaye, and Richard and Linda Thompson, the emotional brutality can resonate for generations. Is it worthy compensation if the anguish produces great art? Life is short - Art is long, and isn't that what every artist hopes for, that their art will endure beyond the grave? Who can weigh that balance?Today's cuts illuminate couples in crisis: In the case of the Thompsons, they were dissolving a recording and performing team; in Marvin's, he was being ousted by the sister of the man who gave him his break. Neither scenario is pretty, but the resultant music remains divine.HERE MY DEAR / MARVIN GAYEAnna Gordy Gaye wanted a million dollars as a divorce settlement from Marvin. She took out a warrant for his arrest for failing to pay alimony, and put a restraining order on him. Check. So, a deal was struck: in exchange for $600K (1/2 in advance; half to be taken out of royalties), Marvin would produce a new album to get her paid. Check mate.Initially intending to make a quick knock off, Marvin became fascinated with the project, devoting himself to making it a passionate sacrifice, detailing the death of love. It was a critical and commercial failure upon its release, but has since been reconsidered, and is now thought of as one of his finest achievements. The title cut that introduces the album disturbingly cuts off in mid-phrase - a distinctly telling gesture.WALL OF DEATH / RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSONLinda was pregnant with Richard's third child when producer Joe Boyd got them into the studio to record the album “Shoot Out the Lights” - a record which Rolling Stone designated as #9 on its list of the “Best Albums of the 1980s”.  They were supposed to tour immediately after to promote the record, but unfortunately, this had to be delayed to allow Linda to give birth. In the interim, Richard, who had fallen in love with another woman, dropped the bad news on her as they set out on tour. After being together for 10 years, and Linda converting to Sufi Islam for Richard, renouncing worldly pleasures, she was now trapped inside a loveless, commercial obligation, ironically, to promote their finest collaboration.Wall of Death, which closes the album, depicts love as a dangerous carnival ride in which you take your chances at calamity, but still want to go back to ride, again and again.
