Malcolm Gladwell, a longtime staff writer at The New Yorker, often uses ideas from the social sciences and epidemiology and applies them to surprising topics. But his new book tackles an issue that's in the headlines every day. The book is called “The American Way of Killing,” and the subject is America's unique association with gun violence. Death statistics, he says, fail to convey the scale of the problem because advances in medical care save countless lives that are nevertheless scarred by violence. This episode originally aired on May 5, 2025.---It was still dark. The group of men felt the breeze getting warmer as the eastern horizon began to show signs of light. One of the men, tall with no expression, watched as final preparations were made to a large object in front of the group. The others saw the anxiety in his face in a way that only those had had been around him could discern. The man walked forward, spoke with some of the technicians, and watched them haul it away. It was going to a tower, visible in the distance. Conversations around him continued, but only because it seemed like they had to. Somehow, the silence would have been louder. Not long after, notifications came from the tower; an all clear was given. At 5:29 a.m., a flash of light that was so brilliant it could be seen from 200 miles away blossomed in the desert. The mushroom cloud rose 40,000 feet into the air, and the shock wave was felt 100 miles from ground zero. The man who all that morning had worn no expression, would later recall remembering a Hindu scripture in that moment: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."Another man who witnessed the test described the overwhelming impression it left: "A new thing had just been born; a new control; a new understanding of man, which man had acquired over nature." Another observer said, "The lighting effects beggared description. Matthew Farwell is heading toward trial with two competing stories about Sandra Birchmore's death and an official record that has already changed. The Massachusetts medical examiner originally ruled suicide. In April 2026, the office amended the manner of death to undetermined and changed the cause from asphyxia by hanging to asphyxia. Farwell's lawyers maintain Sandra killed herself. A federal judge has ruled that they may introduce evidence about her mental-health struggles and history of suicidal thoughts. Prosecutors will argue that the case cannot be reduced to those records. They allege Farwell used his authority in the Stoughton Police Explorers program to begin an unlawful relationship with Sandra when she was 15 and later killed her to stop disclosure. Sandra had joined the youth program at 12. A later Stoughton internal investigation found that Matthew Farwell, his twin brother William, and former deputy chief Robert Devine had inappropriate relationships with her. William Farwell and Devine have not been charged in the federal prosecution. The early handling of Sandra's death is also expected to matter. Federal prosecutors say local officers told the medical examiner there was “no foul play” within about an hour of finding her body. They say investigators did not compel Farwell's DNA and did not seize his electronic devices during the first investigation. Federal investigators later returned to the evidence. Prosecutors have said testing showed Farwell was a major DNA contributor on the duffel-bag strap found at the scene. Defense lawyers say the strap contained a complex mixture and dispute the government's interpretation. Farwell has pleaded not guilty to charges of killing a witness and causing the death of Sandra's unborn son. The defense says suicide. The prosecution alleges homicide and staging. The Mica Miller case returned to national attention after Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife gave her friends and family room to describe what they say Mica was telling them before April 27, 2024. One friend says Mica expressed a specific fear involving JP Miller, a statement that now lands against a separate federal indictment alleging cyberstalking. Mica's death at Lumber River State Park was ruled a suicide, and JP Miller has not been charged with causing it. Her divorce attorney has said Mica was discussing a new start the day before she died, while the medical examiner's report recorded no signs of a struggle where shell casings were recovered. Those facts remain part of the official record even as Mica's loved ones continue to question how her final weeks unfolded. Federal prosecutors are asking a jury to decide something narrower. They allege JP engaged in cyberstalking from November 2022 through Mica's death, including unwanted communications, tracking devices, financial interference, repeated contacts, and an incident involving her vehicle tires. They also accuse him of lying to federal investigators; he has pleaded not guilty. The federal indictment carries a maximum of five years on the cyberstalking charge and two years on the false-statement count if Miller is convicted. He remains free on bond while the case waits for the October 2026 term. Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI Special Agent, explains why the distinction matters. The federal trial can test the government's cyberstalking and false-statement allegations, but it is not a homicide case and cannot be treated as one. JP Miller was part of Mica Miller's first marriage before he became her second husband. He officiated her 2012 wedding to Jeremy Deas after Mica had already spent years inside the Solid Rock Church community in Myrtle Beach. Mica began attending the church as a teenager. She later became a worship leader, and reporting and court records place her working for JP's family. JP was roughly fifteen years older and served as pastor, mentor and employer before their relationship changed and they married in November 2017. The later federal allegations make that earlier power structure impossible to ignore. A grand jury indicted JP in December 2025 on cyberstalking and false-statement charges. Prosecutors allege that between November 2022 and April 27, 2024, he repeatedly contacted Mica, interfered with her finances and daily activities, damaged her tires, posted an intimate image without permission and caused tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty and has not been charged in connection with her death. Trial is set for the October 2026 federal term. Former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer examines how investigators separate disturbing relationship history from evidence that can actually support a criminal charge. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the social environment around a dominant leader and how group loyalty can discourage questions until the consequences become impossible to dismiss. Former Solid Rock members have publicly described raising concerns about JP and feeling dismissed. Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife also portrays a congregation split over what members believed and whom they trusted. The federal indictment does not identify church members as charged participants. Show Notes: Nostalgia, Recorded at 5:45 in the Morning For their first dip into the 1990s Wilderness Years, John and Jim take on The Paradise of Death—the five-part BBC Radio serial that brought Jon Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney, and Elisabeth Sladen back together in 1993 for Doctor Who's 30th anniversary. It's a lavishly produced piece of nostalgia with everyone slipping effortlessly back into their roles, and Jim surprises himself by having far more to say about it than he expected. But it's also, both hosts agree, a real mixed bag—one that runs long enough to test even a devoted listener's attention. A Theme Park That Predicted the Future Space World, London's flashy new amusement park, runs on "ER"—Experienced Reality, a full-immersion virtual experience that the hosts note eerily anticipates where technology sits today. The opening episode earns near-universal praise from both hosts, complete with a sound effect for entering VR that somehow just works. From there, the story spirals out to an alien world, a corporation with sinister motives, gladiatorial games, and a plant with a very dark secret. When You Bring Back the Legends But Don't Give Them Much to Do Here's where the hosts wrestle with the production. Jon Pertwee shines and the female guest character, Onya, nearly steals the whole thing—but the Brigadier spends most of the story, as Jim dubs him, the "backseat Brig," and Sarah Jane is saddled with more victim duty (and with the widely loathed new photographer Jeremy Fitzoliver) than the fans would have liked. There's a debate about whether leaning on nostalgia alone is enough when the beloved characters aren't given real material, and a discussion of the ways Barry Letts's script reaches for a more "mature" register than classic TV Who ever did—some of it landing, some of it distinctly uncomfortable. A Continuity Snag Only a Barry Letts Could Introduce In a move that baffled fandom, the script stages a first-time introduction between two characters who had already met on screen. The hosts dig into exactly where and when that introduction really happened, why nobody in the room caught the error, and what it reveals about how much (or how little) oversight this side project got. There's a running argument that a Terrance Dicks-style continuity person could have saved the production from itself. Reverse the Polarity of the What Now? One creative choice genuinely sours Jim: the story pauses to deconstruct a certain beloved Third Doctor catchphrase, explaining away something that never needed explaining. It sparks a lively debate about which Doctor catchphrases should simply be left alone (Allons-y, my giddy aunt, brave heart) and whether taking the Mickey out of Pertwee's signature line crosses a line of its own. There's a happier callback later, too—a Venusian lullaby and a fondly remembered name from the Pertwee era that the hosts were delighted to hear. A Death That Actually Lands Amid the mixed feelings, the hosts single out a genuinely affecting moment of grief in the final episode—the kind of heartfelt reaction to a character's death that earlier Doctor Who so often skipped right past. It's a reminder of what the production gets right even as the hosts find their attention wandering through the sprawling later episodes. Malcolm Gladwell, a longtime staff writer at The New Yorker, often uses ideas from the social sciences and epidemiology and applies them to surprising topics. But his new book tackles an issue that's in the headlines every day. The book is called “The American Way of Killing,” and the subject is America's unique association with gun violence. Death statistics, he says, fail to convey the scale of the problem because advances in medical care save countless lives that are nevertheless scarred by violence. Mica Francis' case is now receiving widespread attention following the Netflix documentary The Death of the Pastor's Wife. Laura analysed Mica's case as it unfolded, documenting the pattern of coercive control, stalking and post-separation abuse Mica reported experiencing before her death.  30-year-old Mica Francis (Miller) was found dead from a gunshot wound at Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina, on April 27, 2024, two days after serving her husband, John Paul Miller, with divorce papers.  John Paul Miller has since been federally indicted on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.  In this remastered episode, Laura is joined by award-winning investigative journalist Mandy Matney and award-winning author Liz Farrell, co-hosts of True Sunlight, to analyse the federal indictment and break down the charges, timelines and alleged behaviours detailed within it.  Together, they examine the alleged pattern of behaviour through the lens of coercive control and stalking, including how cyberstalking can be used as a tactic of control and why the post-separation period can be particularly dangerous.
