Malcolm Gladwell, a longtime staff writer at The New Yorker, often uses ideas from the social sciences and epidemiology and applies them to surprising topics. But his new book tackles an issue that's in the headlines every day. The book is called “The American Way of Killing,” and the subject is America's unique association with gun violence. Death statistics, he says, fail to convey the scale of the problem because advances in medical care save countless lives that are nevertheless scarred by violence. Mica Francis' case is now receiving widespread attention following the Netflix documentary The Death of the Pastor's Wife. Laura analysed Mica's case as it unfolded, documenting the pattern of coercive control, stalking and post-separation abuse Mica reported experiencing before her death.  30-year-old Mica Francis (Miller) was found dead from a gunshot wound at Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina, on April 27, 2024, two days after serving her husband, John Paul Miller, with divorce papers.  John Paul Miller has since been federally indicted on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.  In this remastered episode, Laura is joined by award-winning investigative journalist Mandy Matney and award-winning author Liz Farrell, co-hosts of True Sunlight, to analyse the federal indictment and break down the charges, timelines and alleged behaviours detailed within it.  Together, they examine the alleged pattern of behaviour through the lens of coercive control and stalking, including how cyberstalking can be used as a tactic of control and why the post-separation period can be particularly dangerous. Little Devil: Christa Pike  On the evening of January 12, 1995, Christa Pike stepped into the room of her friend Kim Iloilo at the Knoxville Job Corps Center and casually announced that she, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, their friend Shadolla Peterson, and Colleen Slemmer were heading out to smoke marijuana. The combination immediately struck Kim as odd. Christa hated Colleen. So why, suddenly, were they going anywhere together? When Kim questioned her, Christa simply smiled, winked, and walked away. A little more than two hours later, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Kim saw Christa, Tadaryl, and Shadolla return to the center. Colleen did not return.  What had happened during those missing hours would become one of the most brutal murder cases in Tennessee history and a pending execution that is slated to happen on September 30, 2026. If the execution happens this month, she will be the first woman executed by the state of Tennessee since 1820. Shortly after Bricen Rivers was released, he beat Lauren Johansen to death and drove around with her body while trying to cover up his crime. Police apprehended Rivers after a six-hour manhunt, and he has now pleaded guilty to capital murder.In the wake of this senseless tragedy, Lauren's father, Dr. Lance Johansen, joins the show to discuss the systemic failures he believes led to his daughter's death and his ongoing efforts to reform laws to protect future victims.
