General Francisco Franco died in November 1975, ending 36 years of dictatorship over Spain. The general had been in power since 1939 after winning the country's bloody civil war, and his death followed a long illness. He was mourned by conservative Spaniards but those on the left celebrated, calling him a fascist who had once been an ally of Hitler and Mussolini. In 2015, Louise Hidalgo spoke to Jose Antonio Martinez Soler, a young journalist about the ending of an era.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the civil rights swimming protest; the disastrous D-Day rehearsal; and the death of one of the world's oldest languages.(Photo: General Francisco Franco lies in state in Madrid, 1975. Instead she stayed holed up at the Airbnb she rented with friends and the film's crew. "We were calling it Snuggle Down because we were all sitting around the fire and having tea and just laughing so hard." Among the people at Snuggle Down was the subject of the documentary, poet Andrea Gibson, who was dying of ovarian cancer. It’s a headline three decades in the making. The executor of the O.J. Simpson estate has publicly acknowledged it owes $58 million dollars to the family of Ron Goldman, but the most the family might ever see would be between $500,000 and $1,000,000, and even that might be a long shot. The Goldman’s have to essentially “get in line” with other creditors, including the IRS, following the death of Simpson last year. This all stems from the civil case where Simpson was found liable for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson, the jury awarding the families $33.5 million dollars at the time. Right now, Simpson’s estate is auctioning off Simpson’s remaining memorabilia to try and raise enough cash to pay down its debts, but turned down a very high profile offer from Kim Kardashian, who was looking to purchase a very sentimental item for her family.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you've ever been in a relationship with emotional immaturity or narcissistic behavior, you know the truth: Healing doesn't come with a map. Emotional safety doesn't come with instructions. And waking up is rarely a straight line. In this 10th “Death by 1,000 Cuts” episode, Tony introduces The Ten Emotional Commandments — the patterns, boundaries, and insights that so many people wish they had years earlier. These commandments aren't rules you obey; they're survival skills you learn. They're the shifts that help you understand your emotions, trust your gut, stop overexplaining, and finally step out of the chaos you didn't choose. This episode is validating, grounding, sometimes funny, sometimes painful — and deeply relatable. With listener-submitted “cuts,” real-world examples, and a gentle breakdown of what healing actually looks like, Tony helps you recognize the patterns AND understand how to break them. If you've felt alone in your confusion, in your exhaustion, or in the emotional whiplash of trying to make sense of someone else's immaturity — this episode is for you. 00:00 Introduction and Series Overview 00:37 The Power of Your Stories 01:20 A Survivor's Poem 04:42 The 10 Emotional Commandments 08:54 Commandment 1: Raise Your Emotional Baseline 15:59 Commandment 2: Get Your PhD in Gaslighting 21:53 Commandment 3: Drop the Rope of Emotional Tug of War 27:33 Commandment 4: Set Boundaries and Mean Them 32:17 Stop Searching for the Perfect Words 33:01 Examples of False Promises and Manipulation 33:52 Understanding Emotional Immaturity 36:41 Limiting Your Attack Surface 40:13 Recognizing Projection 44:45 Honoring Your Inner Dialogue 48:37 Trusting Your Gut and Emotions 53:07 Change is Not Linear 57:51 Final Thoughts and Resources Women navigating emotionally immature relationships: come join Tony's private women's Facebook group. This episode continues the practical series on the Inner Villain system by breaking down how to communicate with each villain type. Kristina and Anna pull from real life, therapy, and relationship work to translate a complex shadow-work system into clear tools you can use with partners, friends, coworkers, and family. Before the communication section, the episode also covers:• Purpose vs meaning• Why your purpose isn't defined by you• How creation works when it's not about control• A new metaphor for the 9 Villains as phases in the lifecycle of a flowering plant• Why people “get stuck” in certain villain phases• What it means to grow in order vs out of orderEPISODE BREAKDOWN00:00 — Opening & Check-InKristina and Anna reconnect after a break from recording. They talk somatic healing, practical implementation struggles, and the tension between “etheric narrative work” and real-life applicability.05:00 — Purpose vs MeaningAnna shares insights from her Kabbalah class:• Meaning is personal interpretation.• Purpose is assigned externally (source, God, universe).• You don't get to define your purpose. Others and life events reveal it.Kristina connects this to Viktor Frankl, creation without attachment, and Buckminster Fuller's idea that purpose arrives at a perpendicular angle to your intentions.13:00 — BREAKTHROUGH DREAM: The 9 Villains as the Life Cycle of a Flowering PlantKristina shares a liminal-space dream that reframed the entire Villain System through the natural growth stages of a plant.A concise map:Obedient Critic — Seed. Rules, inherited limitations, instruction set.Vengeful Martyr — Cotyledon (baby leaves). Self-generated energy. Doing everything alone.Vain Controller — True leaves + root establishment. Channels, resources, trust.Eternal Child — Explosive growth, abundance, chaos.Evasive Expert — Balancing inputs. Regulating water/light.Divisive Immortal — Flowering. Death, risk, community, cross-pollination.Hungry Shapeshifter — Seed production. Creativity, potentiality.Righteous Bully — Seed release. Letting go. Not controlling outcomes.Invisible Destroyer — Desiccation / return to soil. Crone, surrender, dissolution.Use it to locate yourself. If you're “stuck,” look at the developmental stage you skipped.41:53 — PRACTICAL SECTION: COMMUNICATING WITH EACH VILLAINThis is the part listeners asked for. Clear, real-world communication strategies, conflict prevention tools, and repair patterns for each villain.1. The Obedient Critic (OC)Rule-set oriented, easily offended, perfectionistic, rigid.Preventive strategies:• Exchange rule-sets explicitly. Ask: “What does X mean to you?”• Agree on shared relationship rules or a “contract.”• Avoid assuming your interpretation matches theirs.• Overshare context up front to avoid catastrophic misinterpretation.During conflict:• Use permissive, soft entry language: “Could we try…?” “Maybe we consider…?”• Validate their meaning first: “I see how in your world this means X.”• Never say “You're wrong.” Reframe instead: “In my world, this means something different.”2. The Vengeful Martyr (VM)Energy-banker, does everything alone, keeps score, collapses into exhaustion.Preventive strategies:• Do not exploit their over-functioning.• Build real competence in the areas they normally shoulder alone.• Remove responsibility from them physically (take the kids out of the house, run point on meals, etc.).• Combine gratitude + competent action.During conflict / meltdown:• Open with: “I'm sorry I hurt your feelings.”• Listen. Don't defend. Don't reason.• Offer immediate relief from responsibility.• After they calm: reduce the systemic over-responsibility that created the blowup.3. The Vain Controller (VC)Status-driven, work-driven, image-driven, terrified of betrayal.Preventive strategies:• Avoid competition or one-upping.• Celebrate small vulnerability when they offer it.• Keep your promises. No exceptions.• Reward their hard work in tangible, visible ways.During conflict:• Acknowledge the breach directly: “I recognize I broke a promise here.”• Use “I will work harder” language.• Outline concrete steps you will take to restore trust.• Don't joke about their insecurities. They will not take it well.4. The Eternal Child (EC)Dream-logic, confabulation, entitlement, dramatic swings.Preventive strategies:• Set clear expectations + consequences. Consistency matters more than anything.• Bring in practicality without shaming their dream-side:“I love your vision. Let's anchor it with two practical steps.”• Give them structure, timelines, and follow-through.During conflict / tantrum:• Do not debate their story. It won't land.• Provide grounding: “I'm here. I'm not abandoning you.”• Hold consistent consequences afterward.• If they escalate to destructive behavior: remove yourself and hold the boundary firmly.ClosingNext week: Part 3, continuing through the remaining villains (Evasive Expert → Invisible Destroyer) with more scripts, tools, and examples.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

From early decorations to Rankin-Bass Christmas classics and Elf on repeat, they ask the audience the big question... is it too early for Christmas? Then it's pop culture time: reviews of Netflix's Death by Lightning (Nick Offerman and Matthew MacFadyen as Garfield & his assassin), a hate-watch defense of Kim Kardashian's All's Fair, a spooky rec for All Her Fault on Peacock, and all the chaos from BravoCon — including Vicki getting her orange back, Lisa Rinna manifesting, and rumors of a Nene/Kim Ultimate Girls Trip. CNN Senior Global Affairs Analyst and author Bianna Golodryga joins to talk about her new book Don't Feed the Lion and how to actually teach kids to recognize and fight antisemitism. They dig into rising Jew-hatred from both the far right and far left, continued fallout from Tucker Carlson's softball interview with Nick Fuentes, the grotesque “America First, America Only” cockroach video from Matt Gaetz's producer, AIPAC as a political dog whistle, and why so many institutions still tiptoe around antisemitism. There are four faces on the Saving Elephants' Mount Rushmore of great conservatives: Edmund Burke, Russell Kirk, Thomas Sowell, and William F. Buckley.  While the first three have each had fully episodes dedicated to their life and works, William F. Buckley has yet to be explored at length.  And with Buckley's posthumous 100th birthday happening later this month, now is the perfect time to reflect on his long and remarkable life.   Sam Tanehaus' decades-in-the-making biography of Buckley was published earlier this year and he joins Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to cover a multitude of ground in sketching out a life well lived.  Sam discusses who Buckley was as a personal friend, his impact on the conservative movement, his flirtation with radicalism and maturing into his role as conservative gatekeeper, and many of the colorful characters Buckley interacted with throughout his life.  Sam also addresses some of the criticisms of his book, Buckley: The Life and the Revolution That Changed America.   About Sam Tanehaus Sam Tanenhaus, the former editor of The New York Times Book Review, is the author of the national bestsellers Whittaker Chambers: A Biography (winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize) and The Death of Conservatism. His feature articles and essays have appeared in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and Vanity Fair.   Buckley Turns 100 Come join the Saving Elephants livestream on November 23 at 8PM EST as we celebrate the life and legacy of William F. Buckley on the eve of his posthumous 100th birthday.  Your questions and comments welcome during this live event.

O.J. Simpson Estate Agrees To Pay Family of Ron Goldman 31 Years After His Death

While Super Mario was my favorite video game franchise growing up, Zelda replaced it pretty quickly once I discovered Twilight Princess and Wind Waker in the late 2000s. Thiis was followed by about a decade of not having a functioning Nintendo system, but when I bought a Switch I mostly played Breath of the Wild and now mostly Tears of the Kingdom. I'd already written a song about older Zelda games years ago, which I was fortunate to have played on the Dr. Demento show, but every once in a while I'd wonder why I'd spent so much time playing the open world games without writing a song about them. And yet nothing came to mind until Pink Pony Club had been one of the most popular songs in the United States (and probably the world) for a while and it spent a good deal of time running through my head, and then I came up with the basic idea of how the inventory (Link's Load of Stuff) in Tears of the Kingdom seemed too heavy for even the strongest of heroes to carry. It took a while from the moment of inspiration until finishing, but it's here now and I hope you like it. As should be apparent, it's not me on the vocals, but someone I've hired before to anonmously provide vocals for parodies I've written.

In the early morning hours of October 8, 1964, thirty-four-year-old housewife and mother of three Lucille Miller placed a frantic call to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department to report that there had been a car accident on remote Banyan Street and her husband had been killed. When deputies arrived at the scene, the car was still in flames and, as Lucille had described, her husband Gordon “Cork” Miller was in the passenger seat, nearly unrecognizable from the extent of the fire damage. The evidence at the scene appeared to support Lucille's version of events; the car had gone off the road while they were driving and caught fire. Lucille managed to get out of the car, but Cork was unconscious and she was unable to get him out. Less than twelve hours later, however, Lucille's story began to fall apart and by the end of the day she was arrested for the murder of her husband. At first, the case against Lucille Miller seemed relatively straightforward; she killed her husband for the insurance money and to pursue a relationship with another man. But as the investigation unfolded and investigators began digging into the Miller's lives, the story became significantly more complicated and no one seemed able to decide whether Cork's death was in fact a murder.Want to buy our GORGEOUS Tarot Deck designed by the incredibly talented Marisa Aragón Ware?
