Netflix's Death by Lightning pits President James Garfield (Michael Shannon) against Charles Guiteau (Matthew McFadyen), the disgruntled would-be political operative who shot him. But it's not quite the stuffy, stately historical drama that you – and your dad – are probably expecting. Toss in a brace of white middle-aged actors in great big bushy beards and sideburns – Shea Wigham, Nick Offerman, Bradley Whitford – and you've got yourself a show. Susie is in the throes of Beatlemania, and she found out who Sarah's favorite Beatle is, and it's hilar (especially the reasoning). We learn about people who cannot see visual images or pictures in their mind, what conditions often correlate with the condition, and the pros and cons to having it. We hear why Susie thinks she has an auditory version of it and we discuss people who have something called "blindsight," where their eyes and brain can see things, but they aren't conscious of it, so they are ostensibly blind, but behave as if they aren't. Sarah describes a documentary about a school principal who hypnotized his students and three of them wound up dead. We discuss a nanny who was hired for a wealthy family and moved into their guest house, but when she was fired she refused to leave and invoked "squatter's rights." We debate the virtues of these strange laws that allow people to take over other people's residences.Brain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Want to feel safer in online dating? The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: 5:05pm- On Wednesday, House Democrats released emails showing convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein discussing President Donald Trump. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that the victim referenced in the email is Virginia Giuffre—who repeatedly stated Trump was never involved in any wrongdoing. In response, the Republican controlled House Oversight Committee released an additional 20,000 pages of documents related to the Epstein case. 5:20pm- While appearing on CNN with Dana Bash, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said that while the far-right has mocked him and called him names, the far-left has openly called for him to die. 5:30pm- During a discussion with Bill Maher, Cheryl Hines revealed: “The Republicans have been very kind to me from the beginning.” 5:40pm- Rep. Mikie Sherrill delivered a 90-second speech from the House floor supposedly opposing the government funding bill—however, she primarily used the opportunity to brag about her gubernatorial election win and announce that it will be her final speech as a member of Congress: “This will be my last speech in this chamber.” She plans to submit her resignation next week—triggering a special election to fill her seat. Democrats will have another House vacancy after only just filling a previous vacancy Wednesday afternoon.
The Sun unleashed an absolutely massive G4 geomagnetic solar storm that hit the planet yesterday. It was the most powerful solar flare that we have seen in 2025. Additionally, an “energetic” and fast-moving coronal mass ejection, or CME, was hurled out by the Sun on Tuesday from the same area as the solar flare. The Space Weather Prediction Center has issued power grid warnings for 11 northern states, stating that the electromagnetic effects of the G4 would cause issues with electrical grids for states poleward of the 45th parallel. The Los Angeles Police Department just confirmed that their “previous statement stands” in the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez — meaning, officially, this case is not being treated as a homicide. Celeste's body was found in September, decomposing in the front trunk of a Tesla registered to recording artist David Anthony Burke, known as d4vd. But according to the LAPD, there's “no evidence of criminal culpability beyond concealment of a body.” That's a misdemeanor under California law. In this in-depth breakdown, Tony Brueski unpacks what that stunning statement really means — and why it might signal a system ready to let this case quietly fade away. Private investigator Steve Fischer, who's working the case in Los Angeles, says there's disturbing physical evidence from Burke's former residence — and hints that there may have been “plans to get rid of her” before the Tesla was discovered. But with no cause of death yet determined by the L.A. County Medical Examiner, prosecutors' hands are tied. Was Celeste the victim of a crime — or of institutional indifference? Why is her case the only one from September 8th still missing a cause of death? And how does a child end up dead in a celebrity's car with no one charged and no one talking? We break down every angle — the silence, the legal loopholes, the unanswered forensic questions, and what this all says about justice when a famous name is attached. #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #D4vd #CelesteRivasHernandez #JusticeForCeleste #TrueCrime #LosAngeles #LAPD #CrimeInvestigation #CelebrityCase #TrueCrimeToday #Podcast Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Barna Donovan, a professor of communication and media studies at St. Peter's University, offers a compelling perspective on the evolving landscape of cinema, firmly rejecting the notion that the art form is dead. With a rich background in film studies from the University of Miami, Donovan delves into how interconnected cinematic universes, such as Marvel, have reshaped storytelling and audience engagement, reflecting a significant shift rather than a decline. As a staunch advocate for independent cinemas and original content, he emphasizes the role of neighborhood theaters in celebrating film as an art form and creating vibrant community events that draw audiences in. Through his teaching, Donovan equips the next generation of filmmakers and media professionals with the tools to navigate this dynamic industry, encouraging them to embrace innovation while preserving the essence of cinematic storytelling.00:06:16) The Rise of Cinematic Universes and Theaters(00:08:31) Rise of Streaming Platforms among Young Audiences(00:12:00) Influence of Streaming on Filmmaking Autonomy(00:21:47) Interconnected Universe Concept Shapes Audience Engagement Trends(00:23:45) Interconnected Superhero Film Overload(00:26:37) Marvel's Gimmicks: A Threat to Storytelling(00:31:44) Creative Downturn in Film Industry(00:51:54) Socially Engaging Movie Theaters for Generation Z(00:57:46) Community Events and Original Content Advocacy

Romans 8:18-23 — Speculation about the end of the world and the millennium (Christ's thousand year reign) has captivated the Christian imagination throughout church history. This, in conjunction with the intermediate state and the eternal state of believers, provokes great discussion among pastors and theologians. Thankfully, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones helps the church by navigating these topics in this sermon on Romans 8:18–23 titled “Death and Heaven.” He pauses his exposition of Romans in order to demonstrate the futility of interpreting Romans 8 as referring to a literal thousand year reign of Christ instead of the future glory when the children of God inherit the new heaven and new earth. Far from reducing the Christian hope to some type of “spiritism” where a non-bodily existence is the goal, the apostle Paul maintains an eternal state where the body will be like Christ's resurrected body. This is different than the intermediate state, says Dr. Lloyd-Jones, when after death the Christian goes to be with Christ until the resurrection of the dead. All this, he argues, has practical application as Christians engage the world in politics and, most importantly, as they go through great trials and suffering in this life. Listen to Dr. Lloyd-Jones expound the great biblical truths about death, heaven, intermediate state, glory, resurrection, and the second coming of Christ. Tara and Tim dive into the surreal rise of AI country stars — like “Caine Walker” and “Breaking Rust” — whose fake voices and fabricated backstories are topping the charts. But it doesn't stop at music. From AI-written “masterpieces” to animal videos and influencer reactions that look perfectly real but aren't, Tara laments how artificial intelligence is erasing authenticity from entertainment, art, and everyday life. The two explore the unsettling truth: no one can tell what's real anymore — and worse, many don't seem to care. As AI blurs every boundary, Tara wonders what happens when the same tech starts creating political voices, news clips, and “truth” itself.

We head to South Africa to start this week. Two South African men vanished from separate hospitals in recent years - only to be discovered days later, their bodies found in the strangest of places. Official explanations have never added up. Were they murdered? And if so… was their murderer human? Or something else entirely? Then we'll head to England, where, perched high above the sea on the island's northeast coast, the ruins of Whitby Abbey have stood for nearly fourteen centuries - silent, watching, and supposedly haunted. Then, a Veteran shares with us his tale of something from the other side reaching out and grabbing him. Who did this soldier show up with as he was not alone. Lastly, a young girl moves in a new home that she immediately hates. What lives there and why does it hate her so much? Several murders have been dubbed “the crime of the century," but the Lindbergh kidnapping case of 1932 might actually deserve the title. According to some, it shaped the culture of conspiracy theories in America. Was Bruno Richard Hauptmann really guilty, or was he framed? Did he have co-conspirators? Or was the crime perpetrated by the victim's own father: the American icon with a dark side, Charles Lindbergh Sr.? If you enjoy this episode, you might also like The Death of Ned Doheny—a case that revolves around a powerful family, and that remains a source of rumor and speculation. In this Bible Story, we witness the tragic yet noble death of James. He would be the first apostle to become a martyr, and he would not be the last. As persecution of the church increases, so does the risk of imprisonment. Yet death is no match for Jesus, nor is it a threat to those who believe in him. This story is inspired by Acts 12. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is Acts 12:7 from the King James Version.Episode 227: As men and women ran from burning buildings to escape death, they were captured by King Herod and imprisoned. These Christians were the only thing standing between him and power. James, one of the Lord’s twelve disciples, remained in the city preaching about the restoration that Jesus brings. While he was preaching, Herod sent guards to kill him where he stood. A public death sent a message from Herod that he is King, not Jesus. But this persecution could not stop Jesus or His followers. Even when Peter was captured and imprisoned, God made a way for him to escape death.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. Welcome back to Lez Hang Out, the podcast that is not afraid to admit to being afraid of death. This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Elizabeth Earley (@therealelizabethearley), author and host of the popular Substack series (and podcast), Queering Reality, and the author of two novels: A Map of Everything and Like Wings, Your Hands. Her new nonfiction essay collection, Little Deaths All in a Row: Essays on Sex and Death, was released in September. We chat with Elizabeth about some super casual, lighthearted topics like the link between the female orgasm and the moment of birth or death, the age-old question of what happens after we die, how birth and death open channels to freely give and receive love, and the philosophical debate over whether humans can ever experience true reality. Elizabeth wrote Little Deaths All in a Row in the aftermath of a near-fatal motorcycle accident that sent her mind into a panicked state while her body was in the literal process of dying. Although she survived this brush with death, Elizabeth was determined to examine her fear and attempt to overcome it so that the next time she met death, she'd be able to pass on gracefully. She explains that while she did not have a “near death experience” of the other side like some people do in terrible accidents, she does believe state of mind during the moment of death has an impact on what comes after. In order to get more intimate with death, Elizabeth began doing energy healing work on hospice patients. She expected to heal her fear of dying, but instead healed something she had not realized she was afraid of; a fear of love (she still fears death as does every human whether they want to admit it or not). Pick up a copy of Elizabeth's essay collection, Little Deaths All in a Row from Jaded Ibis Press [x] for more musings on the nature of reality, love, philosophy, sex, mortality, and what, if anything, comes after death. Living alone may be difficult, but what about dying alone? Physicians and nurses are the new priests accompanying people as they face death. But the experience of nursing homes, assisted living, and palliative wards are often some of the loneliest spaces in human culture.“He said, ‘Someone finally saw me. I've been in this hospital for 20 years and I didn't think anyone ever saw me.'”This episode is part 5 of a series, SOLO, which explores the theological, moral, and psychological dimensions of loneliness, solitude, and being alone. In this episode, Columbia physician and medical ethicist Lydia Dugdale joins Macie Bridge to reflect on loneliness, solitude, and what it means to die—and live—well. Drawing from her clinical work in New York City and the years of research and experience that went into her book The Lost Art of Dying, Dugdale exposes a crisis of unrepresented patients dying alone, the loss of communal care, and medicine's discomfort with mortality. She recalls the medieval Ars Moriendi tradition, where dying was intentionally communal, and explores how virtue and community sustain a good death. Together they discuss solitude as restorative rather than fearful, loneliness as a modern epidemic, and the sacred responsibility of seeing one another deeply. With stories from her patients and her own reflections on family, COVID isolation, and faith, Dugdale illuminates how medicine, mortality, and moral imagination converge on one truth: to die well, we must learn to live well … together.Helpful Links and ResourcesThe Lost Art of Dying: Reviving Forgotten Wisdom by Lydia S. To begin today's tale, allow me to share a translation of an ancient Chinese joke: Three men were looking at the clouds. One points to a cloud and says, that cloud is shaped like a horse. Another points to a cloud and says, that one is shaped like a whale. The third man points to a mushroom-shaped cloud, and everyone dies. On today's episode: you'll find out just how badly ancient China wanted nothing to do with you; you'll learn about an explosion so large, people miles away had to clear limbs and genitals from their rooves; and you would hear about how at the time, ancient disasters were believed to be Heaven's way of saying your Government sucked. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear about how people were killed in the early development of explosives, including those for whom there wasn't enough left to put a thermometer in; you would hear about the time San Francisco tried to use dynamite to fight fires, and how that didn't go as well as you'd think; and you would hear as I climb upon my pulpit and deliver unto you a sermon on blasphemy and the special place in hell reserved for insurance adjusters. As one supporter who already heard this on Patreon said – "everybody Wanggongchang tonight!"Jesus himself will make a quick cameo in this story, and he will explain how all sins are forgivable – except for the blasphemous use of his Dad's name by insurance adjusters, and how there's a toasty level of hell that awaits them all. Apologies in advance if you work in insurance, but it's better to find out now. The last time we visited China, we watched a sideways rocket launch that performed an incomplete orbit over the countryside before landing nose first onto its own launch centre 22 seconds later. Those were the good old days compared to today's story, which is much older, and much more aggressive. It won't be as gory of course, but the body count will be much more egregious. In trying to figure out this story's rightful place in history, I had to start comparing it to meteors and super volcanoes and atomic bombs. Not to spoil anything, but this is one of the more profound disasters we've ever covered, and the cause was I believe, something so innocuous and dumb, I've done it to my cat by accident before. In the long and dramatic annals of British history, no transition from one monarch to another has been as fraught and consequential as that which ended the Tudor dynasty and launched the Stuart in March 1603. At her death, Elizabeth I had reigned for 44 turbulent years, facing many threats, whether external from Spain or internal from her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots. But no danger was greater than the uncertainty over who would succeed her, which only intensified as her reign lengthened. Her unwillingness to marry or name a successor gave rise to fierce rivalry between blood claimants to the throne—Mary and her son, James VI of Scotland, Arbella Stuart, Lady Katherine Grey, Henry Hastings, and more—which threatened to destabilize the monarchy. As acclaimed Tudor historian Dr. Tracy Borman reveals in The Stolen Crown: Treachery, Deceit, and the Death of the Tudor Dynasty (Grove Atlantic, 2025), according to Elizabeth's earliest biographer, William Camden, in his history of her reign, on her deathbed the queen indicated James was her chosen heir, and indeed he did become king soon after she died. That endorsement has been accepted as fact for more than four centuries. However, recent analysis of Camden's original manuscript shows key passages were pasted over and rewritten to burnish James' legacy. The newly-uncovered pages make clear not only that Elizabeth's naming of James never happened, but that James, uncertain he would ever gain the British throne, was even suspected of sending an assassin to London to kill the queen. Had all this been known at the time, the English people—bitter enemies with Scotland for centuries—might well not have accepted James as their king, with unimagined ramifications. Inspired by the revelations over Camden's manuscript, Dr. Borman sheds rare new light on Elizabeth's historic reign, chronicling it through the lens of the various claimants who, over decades, sought the throne of the only English monarch not to make provision for her successor. The consequences were immense. Not only did James upend Elizabeth's glittering court, but the illegitimacy of his claim to the throne, which Camden suppressed, found full expression in the catastrophic reign of James' son and successor, Charles I. His execution in 1649 shocked the world and destroyed the monarchy fewer than 50 years after Elizabeth died, changing the course of British and world history.
