JJ welcomes Sheila Donohue for a conversation that blends entrepreneurship, lifestyle, and the art of curated Italian wines and foods. Sheila shares how her company, Verovino, sources small-batch, farm-made wines, olive oils, and specialty foods—many not readily available in the U.S.—and delivers them to both consumers and businesses across America. In This Episode Meet Sheila in Bologna: Sheila shares her life in Bologna, Italy, where she's lived since 2001, and how Italy shaped her expertise and relationships with producers. What Verovino does: Verovino curates and imports authentic, sustainably made, small-batch products—primarily from Italy, plus select producers from other countries and California—selling B2B and direct-to-consumer. From fintech to food & wine: Sheila explains her background in financial technology (fintech), her sommelier training in Italy, and how her personal immersion in artisan food culture inspired the company. Starting from a "clean slate": In 2017, after major life changes, Sheila began building Verovino—funded through savings—and took early action by importing product and going door-to-door to find customers. How the business grows: Sheila emphasizes the importance of continuity (repeat business), building scale, and covering operating expenses. She explains how an omni-channel strategy helps stabilize the business: Distributors nationwide Wine stores & restaurants (especially in California) Direct-to-consumer shipping across the U.S. Corporate gifting & events Marketing & education that compounds: Verovino invests in education and storytelling through digital marketing—especially their blog and YouTube channel—to build long-term brand trust and demand. Product philosophy: As a sommelier-led team, Sheila curates for variety and distinction: reds, whites, rosés, orange wines, sparkling (dry and sweet), plus standout olive oils—including single-varietal olive oils with specific pairing profiles. Events as a growth engine: Sheila shares how tastings, fundraisers, private events, and collaborations introduce people to the products—because tasting creates appreciation and connection. Specialty foods: The conversation highlights a Piedmont hazelnut producer offering toasted hazelnuts, caramelized hazelnuts, hazelnut creams, pasta, and pestos—plus JJ's enthusiasm for pistachio cream and clean ingredients. Wine club & gifting: Sheila describes Verovino's monthly or quarterly wine club, curated shipments with insider notes and stories, and a growing trend of gifting memberships (including personalized letters). Gift sets: Verovino offers curated gift sets—popular in December—and a standout option that pairs wine + olive oil, plus expanded options for non-wine drinkers. A second brand line for broader appeal: To avoid being pigeonholed and to meet different market needs, Sheila shares how Verovino expanded into a separate line for more "recognizable" wines, including Prosecco and kegs—ideal for events and high-volume restaurant service. Advice for new producers: Sheila emphasizes the need to stand out in a crowded market—especially as the wine industry faces headwinds—and to clearly differentiate your product and message. Memorable Moments JJ connects her own journey as a winemaker (High Vibrational Wines) and discusses why she values small-batch, purpose-driven production over mass distribution. A fun community collaboration emerges: JJ invites Sheila to co-create a March event in Ojai with "Women Behind the Business: Real Conversations," potentially adding a wine tasting experience—and they discover their birthdays are both in March. Connect with Sheila / Verovino Website: Verovino.com YouTube: Vero Vino Instagram & Facebook: VeroVinoGusto Closing: JJ encourages listeners to explore Verovino for personal discovery, gifting, and creating meaningful food-and-wine experiences that bring "a taste of Italy" home.

Kevin and Bill talk about the patterns of our cultural disintegration, and how they are reflected in the changes to the half-time show over the past 60 years. Events like these incrementally adjust worldviews by pushing the envelope of what people feel is acceptable to society. But how should we engage with those who think it was just a celebration of diversity? How do we avoid groupthink, and point out that the emperor has no clothes? Multiculturalism is meant for a pass on bad morality, but not for us.

In today's episode, Sanjana Paul, the Executive Director of Rooted Futures Lab, shared how her organization is bridging the gap between technology and environmental justice to create a more equitable and sustainable future.Sanjana explained that environmental justice, as a concept, ensures equal protection from environmental harm, regardless of income, race, or geography. She shared a disturbing insight from Dr. Robert Bullard's research: low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately burdened by pollution and environmental hazards. “A kid anywhere in the world should be able to breathe and not be breathing in pollution,” Sanjana said.Rooted Futures Lab is tackling this challenge by merging education, research, and action. A key initiative involves hosting environmental hackathons, where young scientists and engineers learn to develop technologies with environmental awareness at their core. “We see hackathons as a fun and community-centric way to introduce hands-on environmental education,” she explained. These events inspire the next generation of engineers to think critically about the environmental impact of their innovations. The organization also collaborates with students and researchers to reimagine technologies like refrigeration systems through workshops that focus on reducing environmental harm. Additionally, they are conducting research on digital infrastructure, such as data centers, to analyze their environmental impact and propose sustainable alternatives.“We should be trying to be better engineers,” Sanjana emphasized. “How can we build transit systems that get us from one place to another without giving a kid asthma?” Her work highlights how technology, when approached thoughtfully, can be used to address systemic inequities and reduce environmental harm.By focusing on educating future engineers, conducting groundbreaking research, and fostering collective action, Sanjana and Rooted Futures Lab are paving the way for a greener, fairer future.tl;dr:Sanjana Paul defines environmental justice and explains its connection to technology and systemic inequities.Rooted Futures Lab educates young engineers through hackathons to foster environmentally conscious innovation.Sanjana highlights key projects, including research on digital infrastructure and sustainable design workshops. She shares how her superpower, connecting the dots, enables her to bridge fields for positive impact.Sanjana encourages collaboration, curiosity, and deep thinking to address environmental challenges effectively. How to Develop Connecting the Dots As a SuperpowerSanjana describes her superpower as “connecting the dots.” She shared how her diverse background in electrical engineering, environmental science, and energy policy allows her to see links between seemingly unrelated fields. “These dots may not seem like they connect, but they really do to me,” Sanjana said. Her ability to uncover these connections enables her to address complex challenges, like bridging environmental justice and technology, with a holistic approach.Sanjana's work at Rooted Futures Lab exemplifies her superpower. While working in atmospheric sensing, she observed the devastating impacts of extreme weather events and pollution. This inspired her to connect environmental justice with technology, leading to the creation of Rooted Futures Lab. The organization now focuses on educating engineers about the environmental impacts of technology, hosting hackathons, and reimagining infrastructure to align with environmental justice principles.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Be Curious: Treat every moment as an opportunity to learn or teach.Think Holistically: Look for connections between seemingly unrelated fields or ideas.Engage with Others: Work collaboratively in a community to tackle complex problems.Slow Down: Take time to reflect on root causes instead of reacting to immediate issues.Learn from Experts: Seek knowledge from those working in areas you want to understand better.By following Sanjana's example and advice, you can make connecting the dots a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. In this short solo episode, Joe Way gives less of a preview and rather a reminder to log in for the HETMA Virtual Conference, emphasizing that it is free, easy to access, and built to fit into a normal work week. He explains that all you need to do is create a free account on the HETMA community site, go to the Events and Replays area, open the Virtual Conference listing, and click the Zoom link to join, with the schedule and recordings also available through the community. From there, he reflects on why the virtual conference matters to the organization's identity, because it was how HETMA began and how its “by us and for us” approach came to life, with the community choosing what it wanted to learn and bringing in the right experts rather than relying on a generic call for sessions. He notes that the virtual conference became an important platform for higher education voices, especially during the COVID era, and that it helped accelerate the organization's growth, leadership development, and initiatives, including moments where honest feedback from attendees shaped meaningful action.Joe highlights the unique community effect of the event, where people can join quietly, participate in chat, and still build relationships that later turn into deeper involvement and leadership within HETMA. This year's conference runs for three days, with morning kickoffs, sessions throughout the day, and a daily happy hour to keep the community connection strong, and Joe repeatedly gives permission to attend in the most realistic way possible by putting it on in the background, jumping in between meetings, and treating it as a flexible shared experience rather than something that requires stepping away from work. He closes by reinforcing that this free conference is especially valuable when budgets and travel are limited, because it still provides three days of learning, networking, and shared problem solving with the higher ed AV community, plus the ability to catch replays afterward if you cannot attend everything live.Visit the community page: https://community.hetma.org/posts/80675845.

Extraordinary Living With Bill & Roger

We continue our "Vision" series with Roger Morris teaching from Habakkuk 2:1–4 that you should ask God for your kingdom assignment, expect Him to answer, and then write the vision and make it plain. He explains that Habakkuk became frustrated and anxious about his circumstances, but his perspective changed through faith as he wrote the vision and looked ahead by faith even before anything changed. Roger emphasizes that you have been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's Son, so your life now includes a kingdom assignment on Earth, and you should set an "appointed time" (an appointment) with God to seek that vision.   He teaches that delays often come from you, not God, and that fear and anxiety are from the enemy, while faith is how you move forward. Roger defines imagination as the ability to see what is not physically present and connects hope to a positive imagination—a blueprint for what you want in life—illustrating with personal stories about dreaming for a home, and God providing needs and desires like appliances and a large TV through reward points.   The message includes encouragement that God is not mad or disappointed in you, and it closes with an invitation to make Jesus Lord, a salvation prayer, and directions to connect with Bill & Roger at billandroger.com for events, the store, YouTube messages, and partnership support.   EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:   00:00 Kingdom Assignment: You've Been Translated—Now Ask for Your Vision 00:23 Welcome + Why You Need Your Bible (and a Funny 'Job' Story) 03:10 Habakkuk's Frustration to Faith: The Setup for 'Write the Vision' 04:09 Habakkuk 2:1–3 — God Answers When You Ask 05:58 'Write the Vision': Seeing It in Your Imagination & Kingdom Purpose 08:15 The 'Appointed Time' (Moed): Make an Appointment with God 10:52 When Vision 'Tarries': Faith, Tradition, and What 'Wait on the Lord' Means 15:22 Your Self-Talk Shapes Your Life: God Isn't Mad at You 17:32 Fear vs. Faith: Anxiety, Thoughts, and Guarding Your Mind 18:47 Hope as Positive Imagination: Blueprints, Dreams, and the House Testimony 25:20 Invitation: Make Jesus Lord (Prayer of Salvation) 26:42 Connect with the Ministry: Website, Events, Store, Subscribe & Partner 28:47 Final Encouragement: Live an Extraordinary Life   Connect with Bill & Roger Ministries: www.billandroger.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064668460680

How do short-term market swings impact long-term retirement plans—and should you actually do anything when volatility spikes? In this episode of The Market Moment, Matt and Eli break down what recent market volatility really means for investors, especially those in or nearing retirement. While the headlines may focus on pullbacks in big tech and daily market swings, the bigger question is whether short-term events should change a well-built financial plan. The conversation explores why volatility is historically normal, how bull markets regularly include 5–20% pullbacks, and why reacting emotionally can derail long-term outcomes. Using real data—from S&P 500 down days to the impact of missing just a handful of the market's best days—Matt and Eli explain why discipline and preparation matter far more than prediction. They also dive into current market rotation, with money shifting away from large-cap tech and into sectors like energy, consumer staples, and international markets. For diversified investors, this shift may actually be a healthy and overdue development. Most importantly, the episode focuses on retirement planning: how to structure income, why holding accessible cash can provide decision-making confidence, and how setting realistic return expectations (not 12% per year) helps build a plan that can withstand five to ten years of uncertainty. Key topics include: ➡️ How short-term volatility impacts long-term retirement plans ➡️ Why intra-year drawdowns are completely normal—even in positive years ➡️ The surprising number of 1% down days in a typical year ➡️ Why missing the market's best days can dramatically hurt returns ➡️ V-shaped recoveries and emotional decision-making ➡️ Sequence of returns risk in retirement ➡️ The importance of diversification during market rotation ➡️ Growth vs. “boring” sectors outperforming in 2025 ➡️ Setting realistic return expectations for moderate portfolios ➡️ Why having a plan before volatility hits changes everything.   The episode wraps with a reminder that good markets are the best time to prepare for difficult ones. Locking in gains, managing risk, and building an income strategy before volatility shows up can make all the difference when it does.   Enjoyed the episode? Don't forget to:

Investors Want Optionality Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Investors follow many startups before investing. They stall in making an investment to be certain it's a good one. They look for additional information about the startup, its product, and market before making a final decision. Investors want optionality. They want to have as many options available as possible. This gives them a better return on their investment. Many investors drop out of a deal without telling the founder. They want the option of coming back in if the deal turns out to gain traction or momentum later. This leads many founders to chase investors who have basically said no to the deal. Founders should ask for the investors' status on the deal. Are you interested? If so, how much are you considering investing? Assuming an investor is interested without confirmation is a dangerous situation. Once the investor decides on a deal to fund, they typically say no to other deals in the running. Gain clarity with prospective investors about investing in your startup. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. 299. Why Moving from Etsy to Your Own Website Is Worth It with Helen from HR Digital Design

This week on the Jewellers Academy podcast, host Anna Campbell is joined by website designer and e-commerce specialist Helen Rawlinson (HR Digital Design) to talk about when and why jewellers should move from platforms like Etsy to their own website. They explore how third-party marketplaces have changed over the years - becoming more crowded, more price-driven, and harder for genuine handmade businesses to stand out - and why relying on 'being discovered' on these platforms is far less realistic than it once was. Helen talks about the positives of having your own website, including giving you control over your branding, your customer experience, and the story you tell about your work and pricing. They discuss the long-term value of owning your customer relationships and data, especially through email marketing, so you can build repeat sales, credibility, and a sustainable jewellery brand. The episode also covers practical considerations like platform choice and why 'done is better than perfect' when it comes to getting your site live and improving it over time.   02:04: Introduction and today's topic 03:13: Meet Helen from HR Digital Design 05:14: The downside of third-party platforms 07:43: Why customer experience matters 08:40: Price comparisons on marketplaces 10:02: Your website as the hub of your business 10:47: Why handmade shouldn't compete on price 12:15: Educating customers on your own site 15:38: Why discovery on Etsy is harder now 17:02: Marketplace fees explained 19:30: Website costs as an investment 21:00: Reviews, stress, and lack of control 24:00: Owning your customer data 26:10: The power of email marketing 28:54: Social media vs email for sales 30:18: Repeat customers and loyalty 32:39: Credibility and trust online 34:26: You don't need huge sales volumes 35:05: Branding and design on your website 39:43: Done is better than perfect 42:44: Shopify vs Squarespace 48:24: Sunk cost bias and getting stuck on Etsy 49:25: The reality of running your own site 51:40: How Helen helps clients 54:20: Where to find Helen 55:10: Closing thoughts   About Helen I'm Helen, the founder of HR Digital Design, and I work primarily with ambitious and growing small businesses who are ready to take their online presence a bit more seriously. A lot of my work is with creatives who've grown their businesses on platforms like Etsy or on home-made websites and then reach a point where they want more control, more stability, and a website that actually supports their business rather than complicating it. I build and advise on websites that are practical, sustainable and designed to grow with the business, without unnecessary jargon or pressure to do everything at once.   Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hrdigitaldesign/ Events for creatives - https://www.hrdigitaldesign.com/pages/create-and-commerce Website - https://www.hrdigitaldesign.com/   Jewellers Academy offers a range of business courses designed specifically for jewellers. One and Done Is Not Going To Work Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. In raising funding, the founder will need to follow up with the investor to close. After the pitch, some founders send one email to follow up. The one-and-done approach to follow up will not work. It takes multiple follow-ups and outreach to close an investor. The investor is searching for more evidence that the startup will be successful. This could be information around the growth of the market, the productivity of the technology, or the strength of the team, to name a few. Continue to give regular updates to the investor with a focus on traction and market adoption. It takes seven touches to close a sale, so it takes seven touches to close an investor. Budget time and resources for the follow-up effort. Set up systems such as a CRM to provide updates to the investors following the deal. Set up follow-up calls and meetings to showcase the results of the business. It takes time to follow up, but that's where the results come in. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. Let's go startup something today. _________________________________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at: http://investorconnect.org Check out our other podcasts here: https://investorconnect.org/ For Investors check out: https://tencapital.group/investor-landing/ For Startups check out: https://tencapital.group/company-landing/ For eGuides check out: https://tencapital.group/education/ For upcoming Events, check out https://tencapital.group/events/ For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group Please follow, share, and leave a review. Small businesses across the country are being encouraged to get involved in Local Enterprise Week 2026, as the full schedule has revealed over 330 events will be taking place across the five days. The initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices will see events taking place in each of the 31 local authority areas focused on helping businesses at all stages of their development, even those who may have a business idea they want to get support with. The events range from accessing funding and the benefits of AI to how to make your business more productive and save money. The events include an AI training event for small businesses with Google, an innovation day with Microsoft as part of the Student Enterprise Programme, Padel networking, a live pitch battle event for businesses, a host of events for International Women's Day with range of well-known names taking part across the country. From businesses that have been supported by their Local Enterprise Office like Ella & Jo to money experts like Eoin McGee, broadcaster and entrepreneur Bobby Kerr and sporting heroes like Kellie Harrington and Derval O'Rourke there is plenty on offer across the country. Kieran Comerford, Chair of the Local Enterprise Offices, said; "Local Enterprise Week is all about opportunity. If you've already got a business and there's a specific area you want to explore or find out more about then this is for you. Similarly, if you've got a great idea for a business and you want to sense check it with experts who have been there and done it, Local Enterprise Week is that opportunity. The Local Enterprise Offices open their doors to everyone and every business to show what is available and what is on offer and create events with experts and businesses that have seen it all. So, if you want to cut costs in your business, access funding or get a handle on how AI can positively impact your business then Local Enterprise Week is for you. It's the perfect chance to see the huge range of supports that are already out there." Anne Lanigan, Head of Local Enterprise and Regions, Enterprise Ireland, said; "Enterprise Ireland is delighted to support and be involved in Local Enterprise Week. Working closely with the Local Enterprise Offices, this week is a chance for small businesses to focus on key areas where they can make a real difference for their future ambitions. "This may be in relation to digitalisation or becoming more sustainable, or those who have ambition to grow internationally and begin to find new markets. If you are a business with the ambition to grow, internationalise or innovate, then there is something for you at Local Enterprise Week and we would encourage every small business out there to see what is happening in their area this year and take that next step." Shane Tiernan is Chair of the County and City Management Association (CCMA) Economic Development Committee and Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council. He said: "Small and medium-sized enterprises play a crucial role in building strong local economies. Helping these businesses grow and succeed continues to be a major focus for the local government sector. One of the key ways we deliver this support is through the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) network. "Each of Ireland's 31 local authorities has a LEO office, which provides both new and existing entrepreneurs with a broad mix of expertise, training, and practical supports. This is a fantastic resource, and I would encourage anyone considering starting or expanding a small business to explore what's available during Local Enterprise Week." The Local Enterprise Offices, located in the local authorities and funded through Enterprise Ireland, support thousands of small Irish businesses and entrepreneurs nationwide. Since their establishment in 2014, they have been the first stop for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and provide a range of supports, including funding, mentoring, training and sector-specific expertise to help guide businesses...
