In this episode, Chris, Saied and Rajeil dive face-first into the chaos Washington left behind after the longest government shutdown in U.S. history — and surprise, surprise: the data we rely on to understand the economy might be "permanently broken." With CPI and jobs reports delayed, distorted, or potentially never released at all, the guys unpack what happens when policymakers, investors, and everyday Americans are flying blind. Add in whispers of shadow revisions, missing reports, and political spin, and suddenly “the data is fake” feels less like a meme and more like a macroeconomic red flag.➡️ But that's not all. The job market is flashing warnings, the housing market is handing out 50-year mortgages like party favors, and the government's “we'll fix it later” approach is aging about as well as a warm gas station sushi roll. Chris and Saied strip away the noise, break down the numbers, and ask the uncomfortable questions no one else wants to touch. If you're tired of sugar-coated narratives and want the real story behind the headlines, this episode is your financial reality check — delivered with the usual THS wit, skepticism, and a couple of perfectly timed eye rolls.

In Episode 337, Kestrel welcomes Gail Gallie, the founder of THE NAT, to the show. A new convening force for Nature, THE NAT is primarily focused on galvanizing the private capital needed to close the nature finance gap; they just held their inaugural NAT Gala "Night For Nature" in September 2025. From working in advertising to co-leading the creation of the UN Global Goals Campaign, Gail has an extensive background in global advocacy and campaigning. "I was pretty blown away that you could quantify the amount of money that was needed to fix where we are now to where we need to get to in order to be in harmony and sustainably working with the planet's resources…and then she said the number and it was $711 billion a year. And I was like, OMG that's enormous…And at the same time, this guy next to me lent in and he said, did she just say the nature finance gap is $711 billion? I said, yeah, I had like sad face, like boo, thumbs down, it's loads. And he said, no, he said, that's like not that bad." -Gail THEME — BRINGING NATURE BACK INTO THE FASHION FOLD In our last episode, I talked about how this 2-part episode theme – BRINGING NATURE BACK INTO THE FASHION FOLD – was inspired by Carry Somers' new book The Nature Of Fashion and the importance of reminding ourselves that we are Nature and fashion has the potential to be more of a reflection of Nature. This episode approaches this narrative from an ENTIRELY different lens – one that involves finance, luxury and creating a spectacle – which is why I really love the juxtaposition of these two conversations. If you hadn't heard yet, there is an actual number that has been calculated – an amount of money that if invested annually into nature-positive projects – could halt biodiversity loss and support a reset for the earth, enhancing life on this planet for years to come. It's called the nature finance gap – and according to estimates in 2020, the number was $711 billion dollars. If you're like me, hearing that number made me sink deeper into my seat, feeling the overwhelm wash even further over me. But turns out, for folks working in the investment space, this number's not actually that astronomical. It's somewhat accessible — according to this week's guest, if just 2% of global capital is redirected into nature, we could close that gap. So how does that happen? Considering that about 80% of current conservation funding comes from public sources like governments and multilateral institutions – that leaves a ton of space to galvanize private capital to bridge that gap. This week's guest has set out to make this happen by creating a luxurious spectacle in celebration of Nature. Anyone ever heard of The Met Gala? Right. Of course you have. If you work in sustainability, have you ever felt annoyed that everyone is paying attention to this one over-the-top night? And have you felt irritated that so much money is being funneled into the tickets and often very unsustainable attire for the evening? You're not alone. Yet so many of us still pay attention to it all. It's a spectacle and we are drawn to it. This week's guest, Gail, generally shared similar feelings. But a couple of Met Galas back, she shifted her perspective and decided to thinking about copying the concept, instead of fighting it — creating a sparkly night focused on generating more funding for Nature – to push toward closing that Nature Finance Gap. Maybe if we *feel* the power and intrigue of particular cultural moments, we should question how to replicate and reimagine them — instead of finding ourselves caught in the hamster wheel of complaining about the negative impact they may leave behind. It's always a pleasure to welcome back Dr. Shane Enete—Associate Professor of Finance at Biola University, founder of Biola's Financial Planning Program, and creator of The Money Storybook Bible Podcast. His creative work helps parents disciple their children in biblical stewardship by weaving financial lessons into retold Bible stories. When asked what inspired the podcast, Dr. Enete explained that the idea grew from a common question he receives: “How can I teach my kids about money?” His realization was simple yet profound—the Bible already does this. “The Bible talks about money more than almost any other topic, and it's filled with stories for all ages,” he said. “So I thought, what if I just told these stories to my kids in a way that helped them see themselves in the story and learn about money at the same time?”Stewardship as an Expression of LoveFor Dr. Enete, the goal goes far beyond teaching budgeting or saving. “Stewardship is one of the greatest opportunities we have to express our love for Jesus,” he said. “When we share, we're loving Him and others.”He hopes parents and children alike will see money not as a source of stress or status, but as an opportunity for love, wisdom, and worship. “I want kids to understand the dangers of debt and discontentment,” he added, “but even more, I want them to know that Jesus is everything—and that money can be used to love Him.”Storytime with a PurposeEach podcast episode features Dr. Enete reading to his own children, with interactive moments that bring the stories to life. “We start with fun icebreakers, like a ‘Would you rather' question, then read a Bible story together,” he explained. “Afterward, I ask questions to help them reflect, and we finish with a hands-on activity that reinforces the lesson.”One of Dr. Enete's favorite family moments came from a story about Solomon. “I asked my kids which world they'd rather live in—one where they're rich but don't know Jesus, or one where they have Jesus but not the riches. They didn't even hesitate—they chose Jesus. That's when I knew these lessons were hitting home.”The Story of Lydia: Business as MinistryOne memorable episode, Purple Snail Robes, retells the story of Lydia from Acts 16. In Dr. Enete's version, Lydia initially wants to give away her wealth to follow Paul, but he helps her see that her business can be a ministry in itself.“Sometimes God wants us to serve Him right where we are,” Paul tells her. “When you share what you have and do your work with skill and kindness, you're showing people who Jesus is.”Dr. Enete shared that Lydia's story was inspired by the idea of Gospel Patrons—those who use their resources to fuel God's work. “Lydia was one of the first gospel patrons,” he said. “I wanted kids to see that our work and business can glorify God. Plus,” he laughed, “the fact that purple dye came from smashed snails makes it extra fun for kids!”The Story of Nicodemus: Costly GenerosityAnother powerful episode, 75 Pounds of Spices, reimagines Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus as they prepare Jesus' body for burial—with a young girl named Abigail watching nearby. The story illustrates generosity that is both courageous and costly, as Joseph donates his tomb and Nicodemus buys an extravagant amount of burial spices.Even little Abigail joins in, offering her treasured blue necklace to honor Jesus. “That moment shows that no act of generosity is too small,” said Dr. Enete. “It's a picture of giving that flows from love—something children can grasp in a tangible way.”Free Resources for FamiliesTo help parents extend the lessons at home, Dr. Enete created a free activity book that pairs with the podcast. It includes fun exercises, badges, and a certificate of completion—each tied to key money principles like giving, saving, and contentment. You can find the podcast and resources at WholeHeartFinances.com.At the heart of The Money Storybook Bible Podcast is a simple but transformative message: Jesus is the true treasure. Teaching kids about money isn't just about dollars and cents—it's about helping them see that every financial decision can be an act of love for God and others. As Dr. Enete put it, “More than anything, I want kids to know that money isn't the goal—knowing and loving Jesus is.”On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I've been diagnosed with a terminal illness and care for my four-year-old grandson. I have $100,000 in life insurance, $50,000 in retirement savings, and $20,000 in cash. How can I set up a trust and invest wisely to provide for him after I'm gone? Also, does the guardian I choose also control the trust, or must they be named separately as trustee or beneficiary?I've seen ads claiming thieves can steal your home's title unless you buy special insurance. This episode reframes the entire money conversation by separating the Church from the nonprofit structure that houses it. We name the fear, pressure, and assumptions that swirl around finances - and then clarify why revenue impacts the organization, not the mission. When we stop confusing the two, financial decisions get calmer, clearer, and more grounded. You'll learn:The difference between the Church and the 501(c)(3) that supports itWhy money isn't needed to save your church (but it might save your building)How identifying fear and spiritual pressure around finances is a starting point for clarityThe real cost of trying to raise money to keep the lights on - and how a shift can save your church cultureCheck out podcast episode 187: When Your Church Feels Like It's Dying: What to Do (and What's Still True)Join our free Facebook Community: www.facebook.com/groups/smallchurchministryRate, Review, & Follow Laurie on Apple Podcasts"I love Laurie and The Small Church Ministry Podcast!!"

Send us a textWe're kicking off Season 4 of the Medical Money Matters Podcast, and we're celebrating something big. Over 10,000 downloads. Listeners tuning in from nearly 1,000 cities across the country—and even internationally. And we're entering our fourth year of episodes. Honestly, that number still stuns me a little. When we launched this podcast, our goal was simple: to help physicians and practice leaders navigate the business of medicine without losing sight of why they went into medicine in the first place. We wanted to demystify the money side. To have honest, clear conversations about things like revenue cycle, financial strategy, payer policies, and practice independence. We believed then—and we still do now—that when doctors understand the financial side of their practice, they're better equipped to lead, grow, and stay independent. And we're just getting started. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today we are talking with an emergency doc who has become a multimillionaire. We love this conversation because he has the most boring and consistent financial story. He didn't build a real estate empire or get lucky with Crypto or some fancy investment. He just has a written financial plan that he has followed consistently. He built wealth the boring old fashioned way, with nothing fancy, but lots of success. He feels strongly about spending on what you are passionate about and being cheap on the things you don't care about. He spends lavishly on travel and even has a language tutor. He currently speaks 4 languages and has been to 45 countries. After the interview we are talking about real estate syndications for Finance 101. When Ron Blue joins us, it's always a masterclass in biblical wisdom. He's co-founder of Kingdom Advisors, a best-selling author, and a trusted mentor to many. Ron has spent decades helping believers apply God's principles to every area of life and business.Today, Ron unpacks what Scripture teaches about partnerships and how faith should shape the way we enter, manage, and exit them. The Broader Meaning of “Partnership”When the Apostle Paul warned believers about being “unequally yoked,” he wasn't speaking only about marriage. As Ron explains, “Paul was talking about partnerships—and there are so many kinds.”From professional firms and small businesses to investment ventures and partnerships, they can take many forms. And while they can be incredibly fruitful, they also carry spiritual and relational risks.Ron pointed out that partnerships often last a long time—sometimes decades. “The CPA firm I founded has been operating as a partnership for 50 years,” he said. “But not all partnerships endure well. Like marriage, many end in conflict.”Principle #1: Protect Your TestimonyRon's first principle is about spiritual integrity. “You have to ask what the partnership will do to your testimony,” he said. “If you're unequally yoked with someone whose values fundamentally differ from yours, you could lose your witness in the process.”He recalled being asked whether a Christian OB-GYN should enter a business partnership with a doctor who supports abortion. “Only you and God can answer that,” he said, “but it's a big question. Your witness is always at stake.”Principle #2: Plan Your Exit Before You Begin“Have your exit strategy in place before you form the partnership,” Ron advises.Just as couples prepare for challenges in marriage, business partners should anticipate potential separation. A clear exit plan protects both parties, ensures fairness, and helps maintain peace when the time comes to move on.“When you have that in place,” Ron said, “you avoid a lot of conflict and preserve your testimony if you're the believer who's leaving.”Principle #3: Preserve the Mission Beyond the RelationshipPerhaps the most powerful insight Ron shared was this: the mission must outlive the partnership.Ron recalled his own experience leading a financial planning firm. “After 23 years, I left—but no one left with me,” he said. “They were committed to the mission. That's what you want to see happen.”A strong exit strategy and shared vision help ensure that the work—and the witness—continue long after any individual departs. The Bottom LineShared faith isn't just good for business—it's essential for a lasting witness. Partnerships grounded in biblical principles reflect God's wisdom and preserve peace amid challenges. As Ron put it, “The most critical thing you want to preserve is your testimony. Everything else flows from that.”On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm concerned about vendors and service providers who want my bank account information for automatic withdrawals. I've been paying my lawn service with money orders, but now they require my account number. I told them we'd have to stop doing business because I'm not comfortable giving out that information. Isn't this kind of intrusive? What do you think about vendors wanting access to our accounts? My spouse and I are both 70 and ready to retire. I own 10 rental houses, but managing them has become too much. Once I sell the properties, what should I do with the proceeds? I understand the basics about capital gains and selling real estate, but I don't want the responsibility of managing individual stock investments myself.I've saved about $15,000 for a car, but have kept my current vehicle running as long as possible. It's a 2007 with 235,000 miles and is starting to have more issues. I found a good used car for about $8,500 and am wondering if I should buy it now or keep driving my current one until it dies, even though repairs may be on the horizon. My parents' health is declining, and we're moving them closer to family. Their current home is in an irrevocable trust, but we've found a condo they can buy before selling that house. Can the new condo be added to the same irrevocable trust? And when the old home sells, what happens to the proceeds?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. It cuts vertically up and down the value chain, and now requires the same level of confidence as financials, with board sign-off and external assurance becoming the norm. In this episode of Run the Numbers, CJ Gustafson sits down with Vanna Krantz, former CFO of Disney+ and Grindr, to explore what it takes to lead finance through massive inflection points. Vanna reflects on building Disney+'s subscription model from scratch under Bob Iger's leadership and the pressure of launching a global product with no precedent. She discusses forecasting as both science and art, and the importance of appreciating high-stakes moments amid chaos. Shifting to Grindr, Vanna breaks down how the company went public with remarkable efficiency—boasting 40% EBITDA margins and under 200 employees—and how she modeled for a user base that consistently churns and returns. She also opens up about career longevity, work-life balance, and helping women find sustainability and acceleration in leadership.—LINKS:Vanna on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vannakrantz/CJ on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cj-gustafson-13140948/Mostly metrics: https://www.mostlymetrics.com—RELATED EPISODES:Monetizing Community Engagement: The Business of Fitness with Strava CFO Lily Yanghttps://youtu.be/zlLb5yZDKQE“Let's Just See What Breaks” — Intuit's CFO on Being a Disruptor When You're Already the Incumbenthttps://youtu.be/Le1D9HXHvGI—TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Preview and Intro00:03:02 Sponsors – Aleph, Fidelity Private Shares, and Metronome00:06:09 Meeting at A16z and Disney Plus Discussion00:07:13 Interviewing with Bob Iger and Joining Bamtech Media00:10:43 Forecasting the Unknown at Disney Plus00:13:01 Launch Strategy – Mandalorian and Retention00:15:15 Sponsors – Mercury, RightRev, and Tipalti00:19:23 Forecasting, Retention Curves, and the Art vs. Science Balance00:22:20 Lessons in Art and Science of Finance at Disney00:25:08 Launch Day Chaos and the Disney Plus CDN Outage00:26:24 Celebrating the 10 Million Subscriber Milestone00:27:21 Grindr IPO and Financial Discovery00:32:42 Active User Metrics and Reactivation Trends00:34:29 Seasonality and Human Behavior in App Usage00:36:02 Free vs. Paid Users and Revenue Optimization00:38:21 Pricing Strategy and Global Monetization00:40:23 Women in Leadership and Staying in the Game00:43:30 Work–Life Balance and Career Seasons00:46:12 Wisdom, Experience, and Staying in the Game00:50:08 Finance Stack, Craziest Expense, and Closing Remarks—SPONSORS:Aleph automates 90% of manual, error-prone busywork, so you can focus on the strategic work you were hired to do. Jack Welch's binder hit the floor before Michael Bourque had time to react. At just 23, he sat in a Honeywell acquisition review meeting as the “keeper of the numbers,” rifling through a binder he knew didn't contain the EPS detail Welch demanded. When the answer didn't come, Welch “swept his binder off the table, threw it across the room, and got up and left,” Bourque tells us. The moment stayed with him—not only the need to anticipate every question, but the feeling of “how I was treated,” a lesson he carried forward. That early scene captures the intensity of Bourque's 15 years at GE, where he rotated every four months on the corporate audit staff, learned to understand a business model quickly, and moved across countries from Mexico to Italy to Canada. He tells us those experiences became “a massive accelerator” but also showed him what he did not want: senior lives “lived 90 days at a time.”Leaving GE led him into Ocwen, where regulatory pressure mounted immediately. Advisers warned him to “run for the hills,” yet he stayed, tracking cash daily and absorbing public blows from the New York DFS. The experience, he tells us, taught him “how to navigate a crisis and try to keep your cool.”At LendingHome (later Kiavi), he applied that calm to redesign the business around two customer cohorts—first-timers and professionals doing “eight or more” flips a year—and anchored decisions in unit economics. That discipline would shape his leadership at Convera, where he now steers a global payments network and pushes teams to adopt AI tools that “help them… get clarity on that next operational step.”

In 1929, unchecked speculation and economic hype helped fuel the worst financial crash in modern history. Nearly a century later, New York Times journalist and CNBC anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin sees troubling parallels. On the GZERO World podcast, he joins Ian Bremmer to talk about his new book, "1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History—and How It Shattered a Nation," and whether today's economy is headed for another cliff.Sorkin warns that behind today's AI boom and market exuberance lies an undercurrent of fragility—historic debt levels, shaky private credit markets, and investors chasing returns with little oversight. While the technology behind AI is real, much of the money flooding in feels familiar to those who've studied speculative bubbles before. “We're not going to have another 1929,” Sorkin says, “but I think it's very possible. Actually, I would argue it's almost impossible for us not to have another 1999.” He sees eerie parallels between the past and the present: massive speculative investments, surging inequality, and a public increasingly disconnected from financial realities. But one thing stands out today: silence. Sorkin warns that many CEOs and financial leaders, despite recognizing the risks, are unwilling to speak out publicly. “If we ever get to a moment where we need to make very difficult decisions,” he says, “are there going to be leaders willing to stand up and explain what needs to happen?”Host: Ian BremmerGuest: Andrew Ross Sorkin Subscribe to the GZERO World with Ian Bremmer Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published.
