Plus, the final episode of The Divided Dial introduces the unlikely group trying to take over shortwave radio.[01:37] Host Micah Loewinger speaks with Anna Gomez, soon to be the lone Democratic commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission, about her makeshift media tour–where Gomez is speaking out about what she sees as the weaponization of her agency. [12:47] Episode 4 of The Divided Dial, Season 2: Wall St. Wants Your Airwaves. In recent years, creative, often music-focused pirate broadcasting has been thriving on shortwave. Reporter Katie Thornton reveals how these surreptitious broadcasters are up against a surprising enemy: not the FCC, but a deep-pocketed group of finance bros that is trying to wrestle the airwaves away from the public, and use them for a money-making scheme completely antithetical to broadcasting.
Episode Summary:Laura Rehbein shares her journey from becoming head of household at age 12 in rural Michigan to building a successful financial advisory practice over nearly three decades. Her book "Fearless Finance" addresses the anxiety that highly educated, successful professionals feel about their finances despite their achievements. Laura reveals why knowledge replaces fear and how proper planning can help clients "face everything and rise" rather than "forget everything and run." She discusses practical strategies like productive pessimism, the bucket approach to retirement income, and often-overlooked risks that can derail investment plans.About the Guest:Laura Rehbein owns Impavid Wealth and has spent nearly 30 years in financial advising. Growing up in rural Michigan farming country, she became responsible for her household at age 12. She entered the financial industry after recognizing a need for more women advisors.Key Concepts Explained:Fearless vs. Reckless: Laura defines fearless as making informed decisions with knowledge and clarity, not reckless choices. Her approach focuses on empowering clients with understanding rather than eliminating all fear."Throw It in a Pile" Strategy: Laura encourages overwhelmed clients to gather all financial documents without organizing them perfectly. She compares this to hiring a personal stylist who sorts through your closet - sometimes you need an objective professional.Productive Pessimism: This planning approach involves overestimating expenses, underestimating investment returns, and planning for longer lifespans. Rather than being negative, it creates a buffer that helps ensure money lasts throughout retirement."Bad Math": Laura's term for overly optimistic financial thinking, like believing you can retire by cutting out Starbucks or that a $100,000 inheritance solves all retirement needs. It occurs when people avoid doing real calculations.Bucket Strategy: Laura structures retirement assets in three buckets: 12-24 months of expenses in cash, 3-6 years in medium-risk investments, and the remainder in growth investments. This provides short-term security while maintaining long-term growth potential.Overlooked Financial Risks:Sequence of Returns Risk: Two identical retirees can have vastly different outcomes depending on whether they retire at the beginning of a bull or bear market. Early losses can devastate portfolios even if long-term returns average out.Healthcare and Long-Term Care: Laura shares stories of clients facing unexpected healthcare costs that required rapid plan adjustments, emphasizing the importance of addressing these risks proactively.Modern Estate Planning Considerations:Digital Assets: Beyond cryptocurrency and online accounts, this includes cloud-stored photos, social media profiles, and email accounts. Some platforms delete accounts upon notification of death, potentially losing family memories.Pet Trusts: Laura emphasizes that verbal promises to care for pets often fail due to changing circumstances. Pet trusts provide funding and assign responsibility for animal care, preventing beloved pets from ending up in shelters.Practical Takeaways:Laura emphasizes that financial planning requires ongoing adjustments as life changes. Whether facing health crises, remarriage, or unexpected events, having a trusted advisor helps navigate transitions while keeping long-term goals on track.Connect with Laura:Email: impavidwealthadvisors@ampf.com | Book: "Fearless Finance"Support the show

We all want the best for our kids, but knowing what's truly best isn't always easy. You've probably heard it—or said it yourself: “I just want my kids to have what I didn't.” It sounds noble, but it can sometimes lead to financial trouble. Today, we'll talk with Dr. Art Rainer about how that mindset can push parents into debt.Dr. Art Rainer is the founder of the Institute for Christian Financial Health and Christian Money Solutions. He is a regular contributor here at Faith & Finance and the author of Money in the Light of Eternity: What the Bible Says about Your Financial Purpose.6 Things That Can Lead Loving Parents Into DebtRaising kids is one of the most joyful and rewarding callings in life, but it can also be financially challenging. As parents, we want to give our children the best: opportunities, experiences, and resources that help them flourish. But sometimes, even with the best intentions, we can fall into financial traps that lead to debt. Here are six common ways loving parents may unintentionally sabotage their finances—and how to avoid them.1. Trying to Keep Up with the JonesesIt's a familiar struggle: your neighbor buys designer clothes for their kids or sends them to an elite private school, and suddenly you feel the need to do the same. But appearances can be deceiving—many people fund their lifestyle with debt. Chasing someone else's standard is a never-ending race, and the finish line keeps moving. Be cautious of modeling your spending after others who may not be living within their means.2. Falling into the Social Media Comparison TrapSocial media only shows the highlight reel. Perfect family vacations, overachieving kids, and pristine homes can tempt you to measure your life against a filtered illusion. These comparisons can spark discontentment and drive unnecessary purchases just to keep up appearances or ease the guilt of not "measuring up." Be mindful of how much your scrolling influences your spending.3. Believing Your Kids Need to Have It AllFrom travel teams to private lessons and elite camps, extracurricular activities have become a costly arms race. While these opportunities can be beneficial, they shouldn't come at the expense of your financial health. Don't believe the lie that your child will fall behind if they don't do everything. It's okay to say no, for the sake of your budget and your family's peace.4. Prioritizing Career Success Over Character DevelopmentThere's nothing wrong with wanting your children to succeed in school and in life, but academic or career accomplishments should never come at the cost of neglecting their hearts. Investing in your child's character, through time, guidance, and godly instruction, often requires less money but more intentional effort. And in the end, it matters far more.5. Overcompensating for What You Didn't HaveIf you lacked certain things growing up, it's natural to want your kids to have more. Whether it was a nicer bike, newer clothes, or a first car, those memories can shape how you respond as a parent. But giving in to every request—even on credit—can backfire. Love doesn't always mean saying “yes.” Sometimes it means exercising the wisdom to say “not right now.”6. Forgetting the Value of Doing WithoutNot getting what you wanted as a kid may have helped you grow. Maybe you learned creativity, resilience, or the value of work through those experiences. Don't rob your children of the same opportunity. Saying no might actually prepare them better for life than always saying yes.Loving your children doesn't mean giving them everything. It means stewarding your finances in a way that honors God and serves your family's long-term well-being. Avoiding debt is one of the best gifts you can give your children—it provides stability, models wisdom, and frees your family to give generously. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I called about our whole life insurance policy. In this episode, I'm bridging two worlds—spiritual alignment and practical wealth building—to show you how timing, positioning, and receiving are the real keys to your next level of abundance. We're talking about the current Saturn return in astrology and how it's revealing what's been blocking your ability to receive—not just love and success, but actual money. I'll walk you through the energetic difference between consuming and creating, why most people are stuck in a loop of “doing” instead of expanding, and the role intuition plays in my own investing strategy. We also dive into real-time market shifts—including where $437 billion just flowed in—and how you can build wealth now, not later. You don't need more effort. You need to collapse time by choosing to become the person who holds wealth with ease. This is about integrating your internal growth with external action. Because money, just like love, is something you allow—not something you chase. Learn more at TheSpiritualInvestor.com

How much of the advice is legitimate and how much is, shall we say, a bit "out there"? On this week's episode of the Crushing Debt Podccast, Shawn & George watch (or listen to) Tik Tok videos from influencers who are trying to help people get out of debt.
