Labor in Prayer III: Praying for Rescue

We have spent the last several weeks discussing the life of prayer in the Christian. Only those who have cried out to the Lord for the salvation of a child, parent, spouse, or other loved ones know the desperation one can feel in this situation. We are regularly tempted with the whisper of the enemy that our prayers aren't working. We continually pray, but that loved one seems to only put more distance between himself and God. So what do we do? Dr. John Snyder and Hugh Morrison discuss how we can approach these situations in faith and how we can answer the enemy's lies with Scripture. A danger the duo points out is that one tactic of the enemy is to make us withdraw from prayer and turn to our own schemes. But God has told us that he will only be found by seeking his face. And prayer is one of the primary means by which we seek his face. So do not despair and do not surrender the sacred privilege of prayer in your life today, particularly in regard to loved ones. How do Christians pray when we aren't sure God is going to answer positively what we pray for? That is the heart of the discussion this week between Dr. John Snyder and Hugh Morrison, pastor and HeartCry missionary in Canada. As Hugh says in the podcast, our role in prayer is to ask; God's role is to answer. So how do we ask? We bring questions God has told us to ask. He has told us to pray for the salvation of loved ones. He has told us to pray for the healing of the sick. He has told us to pray for sanctification and holiness. And he has told us to pray for all of those things without doubting. But when it comes to praying for healing or for the salvation of a loved one, how do we persevere when we doubt? We begin by confessing the doubt to God and giving it up to him. As Hugh later said during one of his sermons at Christ Church New Albany, we reject what we see as reality and replace it with God's reality. This is not an easy task to accomplish. But it is one that God has obligated himself to help his children do. So cry out to him for help, and he will, like a loving father, walk alongside you and help you pray to him. In one sense, prayer is the simplest thing for a Christian. It is simply a child going to his father and talking. But it is also mysterious because it is a relational transaction between our soul and the only uncreated being in the universe. We can have communion with the Redeemer of our souls. We can walk into the presence of almighty God to have his attention. Hugh Morrison, you may remember his talk to church leaders a few weeks ago, is on the podcast this week to discuss the labor of prayer with Dr. John Snyder. This will be a three-episode series with this opening discussion focused on the necessity of meeting with God in prayer. Because prayer is seldom studied, it is often seen as something to do as part of our morning devotion, part of a worship service, part of eating a meal. But prayer is much more. Prayer should be the heartbeat, the breathing of a Christian. It is a thread through which nearness and communion with God is woven into our lives. So how can we have the prayer life we yearn for? How can we perform that work of praying to God? One help is to read all that Scripture has to say about the issue. A secondary help is to find someone you know who practices prayer. A third help, particularly if you do not have someone who can disciple you in prayer, is the use of biographies. John and Hugh share how God had used several biographies to shape their prayer lives. Several weeks ago, Canadian pastor and HeartCry missionary Hugh Morrison came to visit New Albany. While here, he preached to our congregation a number of times. We also asked him to speak to local ministers on prayer. His talk was so beneficial to us that we wanted to share it with you. Because the talk was so long, we opted to split it for you. So this week, we present to you the second half of Hugh's talk on the necessity of prayer for every Christian, and particularly for those in positions of leadership. A few weeks ago, Dr. John Snyder was in Nova Scotia, Canada, to teach a theological intensive for local pastors. The theme of the seminar was Union with Christ, a familiar topic if you've been following the podcast. During a short break in the teaching, John sat down with Dave Story and Hugh Morrison. These two men have been faithful pastors in their areas for years. They have also been instrumental in discipling and training many of the younger pastors at the retreat. John, Dave, and Hugh take the opportunity to share with you the spiritual needs of Canada, what community evangelism and engagement can look like, and some practices for training young men with an interest in ministry. Because we were recording with limited equipment, our audio is not up to our normal standard. We have cleaned it up to the best of our ability and apologize for the subpar quality.   Want to listen to The Whole Counsel on the go? She did her first Feis this month as a beginner and came in third place for Light Jig among 11 other kids. We were pretty excited. Before the Feis, I had a LOT of questions. I was not raised on Irish dance. I really know nothing about it. So last month, I contacted Emma Burke of Atlanta Irish Dance to find out more. Emma Burke was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Atlanta. She is a former litigation attorney in the area and a classically trained flautist. Now she is co - founder of Atlanta Irish dance and is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, Emma competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Emma is also a four time Southern Region Champion, consistently placed top 5 in the North American Nationals, and competed in the World Championships of Irish dance many times where her highest placement was 13th, earning her a coveted World Medal. I asked her to tell me more about Irish dance. 41:52 - WHAT IS IRISH DANCE? Since I also wanted to know what to expect at a Feis, I asked Emma what a Feis is and what happens at a Burke Connolly Feis. I'll let her tell you more about it. 45:51 - MORE ABOUT BURKE CONNOLLY FEIS If you want to learn more about Irish dance, the instruments they play and the types of dances they do, make sure you join us on Patreon. I will release an extended version of our interview in a week or so for Song Hengers. 48:34 - Clover's Revenge "Raggle Taggle Gypsy" from Gotta Get O'Raggednized 52:29 - Sons of Malarkey "Tripping Father" from Presenting Sons of Malarkey 55:53 - Hugh Morrison "Down the Dunes" from Lift Your Head Up 59:51 - Highlander Celtic Rock Band Australia "The Craic Fiddle" from North of the Wall 1:04:19 - CLOSING 1:06:00 - Clann An Drumma "Lion Tyrant" from Order of the Stag The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was edited by Mitchell Petersen with Graphics by Miranda Nelson Designs. I recently got engaged!  My fiancé and I love the podcast, its always playing like radio in our house and cars.  You mentioned the next Celtic Invasion is in Scotland, which is where we went to go for our honeymoon.  You also mentioned it will be near the beginning of June 2022.  Thats also when we are planning our wedding, and it sees fortuitous that perhaps we can go on the Invasion vacation shortly after our big day.  Have you “Loched” down dates yet? Where can we send a wedding invite?" Katherine McMillan emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, Thanks so much for all you do, I've found many great Irish/Celtic bands through listening to your podcast. I usually listen to it while I'm in the lab at work but we are currently in lockdown here in Victoria, Australia so my work is closed. Instead, I'm listening to the podcast while sorting out all the sheet music for my flute quartet, hoping it will inspire me to arrange more Celtic music for four flutes as it's definitely our favourite type of music to play. At the moment I've got the Rainy Days episode playing; it seemed appropriate given the very cold and wintery days. Thanks again and keep up the great work!"

I hear you every day (I listen to your podcast when I go to work (I am a teacher and the school where I work is one 80 kilometres far). My band knows new musicians and songs thanks to you and your podcast, your podcast is an excellent resource, we enjoy it a lot and you are almost our muse (he he, this is a joke). We invite you to visit us perhaps in our Irish Fleadh in Cáceres every October and of course, to know Cordoba and its impressive celtic culture fans. I listen to podcasts a couple hours per day because the commute to my kids’ school is  so long I spend a couple hours per day on my cargo bike. I can’t really take a selfie while riding so you’ll just have to imagine me rocking out or Singing along to your amazing compilations while whizzing through the beautiful Dutch dunes and woods on my electric cargo bike, often with two little girls in front in the cargo part...it makes my commute SO much fun so a big thanks to you! Greetings from the Netherlands, a great Place to be despite its deficit of Celtic music." Max Flight emailed: "I was listening to Libsyn's The Feed podcast and heard your immediately identifiable voice talking about chapters. Even though it takes more production time, I've started using chapters in my podcast. I overruled my co-hosts who thought it would make it too easy for listeners to skip content. My logic is whatever makes it easier for listeners to get value is good. If they skip a segment in an episode and concentrate on what they want to hear, great! That's better than them unsubscribing because they are tired of listening to stuff they don't care about. As for your show (which I'm very fond of, by the way), I've hoped for chapters because I could easily re-listen to songs. Sometimes I'm listening to an episode and I'd really like to go back and re-listen to a piece. Maybe it was so good I want it again. Maybe I was distracted and didn't realize until half way through that I've missed something wonderful. Chapters would make that super-easy. Anyway, just my thoughts." A portion of the money raised from compilation CD sales and from your Patreon donations is donated to Celtic Non-Profits. We already donated money to the Savannah Irish Festival to help some of the artists featured on this podcast. We are also sponsoring the Texas Scottish Festival in May. Keep it up!" Tom Cochran emailed: "Hi Mark, Tom C from the highlands of western Colorado. Just recently found your podcast from a post on my Clan’s Facebook page. Have listened to several now and find the diversity of music refreshing and matching my own musical tastes which are eclectic. I enjoy everything from classical, to musical theatre, classic rock, folk, and of course Celtic music in its many forms. My wife and I along with son Brendan and friend Jonathan make up Oran Mor. We have been playing a lot these past few months locally and are planning our first recording in the coming year. As a long time theatre geek ( presently directing  Conor McPhearson’s Irish Drama “The Veil”) I am new to the music business. So I would appreciate any advice. You can check out our web page at oranmormusic.com. Favorite influences include, Dougie McIean, Runrig, Battlefield Band, Old Blind Dogs, Silly Wizard, Albannach, The Elders and the Chieftains. That tune inspired the CD of the same name. The last CD, in fact, of Jed Marum. I was saddened last week when I learned that Jed passed away on May 2. He was 66 years old. Jed's music has been a big part of this podcast. He first showed up in show #13. But he quickly became an essential part of the show. He even allowed me to share some of his CDs, in their entirety, on the podcast. #42 featured Lonestar Stout. #91 featured Soul of a Wanderer. My first big experience with Jed Marum was at the Texas Scottish Festival in 2011. I shared a stage with him and Hugh Morrison other musicians. I'm not a super outgoing guy. But Jed approached me and made me feel like he did with everyone, like one of the family. He was kind and generous person. So today, I'm gonna highlight his music. I'll share of the music of others as well. But it's mostly about Jed. His passing is a great loss to the Celtic community. I want to celebrate his life with music. Sailing in the Mediterranean and Beyond

Sailing in the Mediterranean Episode 110 Hugh Morrison s/y Savannah and the Corsica Classic In this episode. It's my delightful pleasure to interview Hugh Morrison. Hugh Morrison is the owner of the sailing yacht Savanna. Savanna is a classic 90 foot yacht built in 1997, the inspiration for this boat was from the classic J Sloops. Savannah participated in the Corsica classic Regatta this year. I talk to Hugh about the boat, his experiences sailing and his background. Hugh is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, which was founded in 1815 in the Thatched House Tavern in St James's, London. Today the clubhouse is located in Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, the club's patron is Queen Elizabeth II and the club's Admiral is Prince Philip. The sailing yacht Savanna has its own website http://www.sysavannah.com/ I'm going to take some information from the website and place it below. In 1995, an American yachtsman hired Elizabeth Meyer's J Class management to help him create a modern classic. He was inspired by the J Class sloops, William Fife and a number of other beautiful old yachts, but wanted a boat under 100' long. J Class selected Pedrick Yacht Designs in Newport, Rhode Island for hull and rig design, and John Munford Design in Southampton, England for interior styling. J Class, Pedrick, and Munford worked as a team to create Savannah. The result is a strikingly beautiful yacht that represents the paragon of 20th Century yacht design. Shortly after her launch in 1997 Savannah was awarded ‘Best Sailing Yacht' by both Showboats International and the Super Yacht Society. Savannah has sailed and triumphed in many regattas around the world. In the words of her designer “Savannah's long overhangs and high freeboard were inspired by the magnificent racing yachts of the 1930s. Her flush deck is accented by varnished teak skylights and coamings. Her beauty carries through a luxurious interior, with finely detailed, panelled mahogany joinery centred on a large and well-appointed saloon. With extensive day sailing and racing planned, there are staterooms for the owner, one guest couple and crew. Below the waterline, Savannah has an efficient cruising hullform, deep Pedrick Whale-Tail fin keel, and separate rudder. Engineered to last more than a century, her construction uses carbon fibre, Kevlar and PVC foam to be relatively lightweight but extremely robust. The tall, fractional rig, also in carbon fibre, drives Savannah to exhilarating speeds. In her creation, Pedrick has embodied the finest of classic style with the best of modern engineering and performance design.” I was introduced to Hugh Morrison by Sir Nigel Southward who I met while sailing in Italy and Croatia. several years ago. When I met Nigel. He was flying a white British Ensign. This is the first British boat that I had seen flying this Ensign so he educated me on the three different British ensigns. The only yacht club in Britain, which is allowed to fly the white Ensign is the Royal yacht squadron. Some information on the ensigns below. It was taken from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_ensign White Today's white ensign, as used by Royal Navy ships, incorporates the St George's Cross (St George's Ensign). British yachts owned by members of the Royal Yacht Squadron are authorised to apply for a permit to wear this ensign. Defaced white ensigns include that of the British Antarctic Territory. Blue The Blue Ensign (dark blue field with the Union Flag in the canton) undefaced is worn by masters of vessels in possession of a warrant issued by the Director of Naval Reserves, and by the members of certain yacht clubs. Such warrants are issued to officers in the active or retired lists of the Royal Naval Reserve and the maritime reserve forces of other Commonwealth realms and territories. The master must be of the rank of lieutenant RN or above, and fishing vessels must be crewed by at least four othe...
