Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textStrap in, team—we're back in the team room with retired Chief Ivan Ruiz, legendary PJ, Katrina rescuer, INDOC instructor, and all-around certified badass. We're talking about the upcoming PJ Rodeo, but let's be honest, this episode quickly turns into a firestorm of nostalgia, brutal honesty, and unapologetic takes on what's going right—and VERY wrong—with Air Force Special Warfare. From the high-angle ropes event at South Point Casino to shooting comps, Monster Mash med drills, and jump events open to the public, this year's rodeo isn't just a reunion—it's a mission. We highlight why the Association and Foundation still matter, why the new pipeline model might be wrecking community culture, and why having your mom at your recruiter meeting might be the red flag of the century. We also get real about silent professionals, the identity crisis in AFSPECWAR, and the gut punch of watching “toughness” get traded for lab coats and PowerPoints.

Air Force Pararescuemen, also known as PJ's, are the only elite combat force in the Department of Defense that are trained and equipped to perform personnel recovery. PJs are highly trained special operators who rescue, recover, and return American or allied forces in times of danger or extreme duress. Our innovative solution treats a sub-population suffering in silence to increased levels of mental health issues. Additionally, Shields and Stripes encourages help-seeking culture change among the service members, veterans, and first responder community. Our compassion and determination decreases negative perceptions, minimizes bias and eliminates discrimination against those isolated and in pain so they don't get left behind. To learn more about Shields and Stripes Visit their websites at https://shieldsandstripes.org/Instagram @shields_and_stripesLinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/shields-and-stripes/Facebook at Shields and StripesSteve's BioSteven Nisbet is a Veteran Entrepreneur. He served nearly 16 years and medically retired in June 2021 from the U.S. Air Force as a Special Warfare Pararescueman. Steven is the Co-Founder and current President of Shields and Stripes Inc. Steven grew up in Tucson Arizona with aspirations to go to college and play soccer.  After graduating high school and attending a local community college studying Astronomy, Steven decided to enlist in the military to become a Pararescueman in October of 2005. Steven always had a drive and passion to help others, which made his decision to become a Pararescueman a no brainer. Steven served in 10 combat deployments in various operating areas to include Afghanistan, Africa, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.  Over this period, Steven has lost over 15 team mates to combat or combat related circumstances and has himself experienced mental health injuries due to sustained combat operations. As Steven transfers from military to civilian life, his passion to help others is just as strong as when he began. His personal experiences with PTSD and other trauma related symptoms have made him acutely aware of those groups that are in need of the very treatment he received.  Steven identified a lack of mental and physical health support within the Law Enforcement and First Responder communities, thus creating Shields and Stripes. He is the son of a 30 year Law Enforcement veteran and knows first hand how these careers can affect the individual. Steven's mission with Shields and Stripes is to change the way public service professionals are cared for when they sustain mental and physical injuries caused by the career path they have chosen.“Make your team follow you because they want to, not because they have to.”Stay up to date and gain early access to new podcasts and upcoming events by signing up for our newsletter at Coming Home Well NewsletterCheck out our other podcasts: Beyond The Frontline, Be Crazy Well, Veteran Et CeteraFollow us on IG @cominghomwell_bts and @behindtheservicepodcastFacebook at Coming Home Well or Behind The ServiceLinkedIn at Coming Home WellSupport the show

We have a special episode drop of Chasin' Birdies today with Mark Brant. We need to pay homage to the troops and those who protect this great Country, and no better way to show that love than with a guy whose golf career came AFTER the military. We open up the episode and discuss with Mark his college days at Murray State and how he transitioned over to the Air Force Special Warfare division. A Pararescueman (aka PJ) is not the route everyone wants to take. For Mark, it was in his blood, and he took on the role without any questions. The episode transitions into some battle stories, and we ask Mark about what it's like jumping out of a plane in the middle of nowhere. We also can't help but ask novice questions like, “Do you carry your cell phone when jumping?”After some military talk, we turn over to the golf side of things, where we learn about where Mark is right now relative to where he wants to be with his professional golf career. We talk about his qualifiers and his love for Pinehurst, NC, where he was stationed not too far from there. We end the episode with our standard tap-in segment where we ask Mark questions that demand his quick reply. Watch out for Mark to see if he breaks through! Thanks for your service, Mark, and good luck chasing your dream. This episode is a feel-good episode that will go well with a nice chocolate brownie. Evenings Kingdom: the Conversations. Wide-ranging conversations with artists and thinkers on their work, their life; their adventures, processes and routines. Kind of an ‘Inside the Actor's Studio' meets ‘The Tim Ferriss Show,' these Conversations will, no doubt, wend their ways into my writing. In stories from me in years to come, you may well recognize characters and ideas first discussed here.  Accordingly, today's episode features my dear friend Pat Gault. He is an artist and waymaker, and a military veteran.  In this conversation, we consider the many different kinds of possible cognizance - that of trees, rivers, mountains, even rocks - how this informs the worldviews of many traditional cultures like the Alaskan Dena'ina, who recognize these multiple dimensions of consciousness, all of which thoughts and the wind could traverse…  Pat became a Pararescueman (a PJ) at 18. He is also a writer, exploring alternative treatment methods for PTSD and depression, such as meditation and psychedelics. But it is his growing relationship with the Alaskan backcountry which has truly transformed his life. Accordingly, he founded the Alaska Institute of Curiosity and Exploration or ALICE to help redefine our understanding of nature as the original entheogen.  You can visit him at AliceQuest.com to learn more about the Alaskan quests he guides - and I do recommend it to your attention! :) Recently Pat was connected with the Heroic Hearts Project, which offers veterans psychedelic treatment options to heal their PTSD. The Heroic Heart's program guides veterans to help them get the most out of their time on retreats, while also setting them up for success when they return home.    This is Pat's story. Hello beautiful people  On today's podcast we have the absolutely phenomenal Robert Hamilton Owens. Robert is a radio and television personality, keynote speaker, adventurer, 12 x Ironman triathlete, philanthropist, former Pararescueman, father of 5 and author of the book, ‘Beyond Average: Developing Yourself Through The 20X Principle'. He was referred to as the fittest and mentally toughest 66-year-old in the world. This was labeled after Robert decided at the age of 65 to complete 5 endurance challenges in one year. What I personally love about this podcast is the way in which Robert really inspired me to reflect on the idea that it is never too late to start the life you truly want to live. After looking after his elderly father for 10 years, Robert had to re-create himself, and the way in which he did at an age that most people begin to wind down, is awe-inspiring. His goal is to be the ‘longest active Ironman in the world', and it really gets you thinking. What do I want to be doing in my 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, even my 100s? Robert was the oldest man to complete the Sealfit Kokoro; a 50-hour event modelled after the US Navy Seal Hell Week; one I have personally been keeping my eye on for quite some years now. I asked him what was his why to get through such a brutal experience and he said; it was to prove them wrong, when most told him he could not, and it was his decision to die before he quit. Now this may seem extreme to some, but it really inspires the question, whatever it is that you want for you and your life, how bad do you really want it? Robert made a special request in this episode, that if you enjoyed this podcast, leave a review, particularly if you listen on Apple that would be wonderful, and reach out to me, let me know your feedback. I think Robert will definitely be a multiple times guest on this podcast, so if you have any further questions on him and his life, certainly share them. And as per usual, share this with friends and family, this one is a great one for all ages, become part of the To Be Human Collective, and I'm excited for what you will learn from the lovely Robert Hamilton Owens.Connect with MeMindset Coaching | https://www.jennahlouise.com.auInstagram Personal | https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseConnect with RobertInstagram | https://www.instagram.com/roberthamiltonowens Website | https://www.roberthamiltonowens.com

He uses his experiences in theater as well as his life journeys to teach others the practice of learning, resiliency, follow through and how to maintain a positive, never quit attitude in the most dire of circumstances.  Mike has a passion for surfing, having grown up in Southern California, and travels the world riding waves whenever possible. He has a strict fitness routine of yoga, pilates and swimming. He desires to share his message with as many people as possible showing that a life a service, whether military or  otherwise will contribute to making our world a better place, while building character, a rising tide that raises all ships. "These Things We Do, That Others May Live." Dr. Doug Kechijian (Dr. K) is a former Pararescueman, or PJ, in the US Air Force and now a Doctor of Physical Therapy and CEO / co-founder of Resilient Systems; he talks professionalism, procedure, self discipline, human performance and getting the call with Jason and Rich for Episode 036.  In his senior year at Brown -- not a typical military feeder school -- the events of 9/11 steered Doug onto a different path in medicine than the one he had been planning. He was particularly drawn to the mission of the PJs. Through his 13-year military service in the “911 of the military,” including being named as the Air National Guard's 2015 Outstanding Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Doug learned the importance of smart training, being really really prepared and strategies to cope with challenges (medical and otherwise).  Dr. K now works with athletes and operators at every level from Major League Baseball to the NCAA to Special Operations Forces. He has been featured in Men’s Health advocating for rucking along with other items from his “menu” of training (mobility, structure, power and capacity -- all with variety). He shares his philosophy of human performance and approach to physical therapy -- which is informed by his time at the tip of the spear so is grounded, accessible and a little different than most.  Links: Resilient Performance Systems Episode 035 with fellow PJ Roger Sparks and Bulldog Bite Explainer Episode 026 with Kelly Starrett Learn more about GORUCK Glorious Professionals Website

In Episode 006, we are joined by Doug Kechijian to talk about the lessons learned through his education in both the military and the more conventional academic path for physical therapy school. We discuss the roles of both a practical based, hands-on education and one involving a conventional classroom setting and more theoretical approaches. With the last year of lockdowns and limiting social gathering, education has taken a more distanced approach with less hands-on learning involved. We ask Doug if we can integrate the best of both worlds to make sure that students receive a complete education under these circumstances and in the near future. We also wonder if this can be accomplished using ‘virtual' techniques and technology, with brick and mortar educational setups being a thing of the past. This interview is a must listen for anyone involved in education and professional development for agile professionals.Doug Kechijian is a physical therapist and CEO and co-founder of Resilient Performance Systems. Resilient seeks to systematically explore the continuum between acute rehabilitation and athletic performance. Resilient's clientele includes athletes and operators from Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), professional mixed martial arts, X Games, Winter and Summer Olympics, Major League Lacrosse (MLL), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), federal law enforcement tactical teams, military special operations forces, and those with a history of persistent pain and extensive surgical backgrounds. Resilient also advises organizations about medical and performance staffing, program development, and injury risk mitigation strategies. Before beginning his sports medicine practice, Doug was a Pararescueman in the U.S. Air force where he deployed throughout the world to help provide technical rescue capability and emergency medical care to U.S and allied forces. Today’s guest is Doug Kechijian, a private practice physical therapist, former Pararescueman in the U.S. Air Force, and co-founder and CEO of Resilient Performance Systems. His practice “seeks to systematically explore the continuum between acute rehabilitation and athletic performance.” Doug graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology at Brown University, and at Columbia University he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and, afterwards, a DPT. We originally intended to focus today’s conversation with Doug on how he practices; but we ended up covering all things knowledge, learning, and competition in the PT journey, as well as the need for apprenticeship to come back again. We do a deep dive into the many realities we don’t like about the current education model and how we would approach certain things differently. In particular, we talk about how the challenges presented by COVID-19 have fully exposed the modern U.S. university’s many flaws, including burying people in student debt, outdated modes of teaching, measuring performance, the fact that “free” doesn’t actually mean free, and the over-prioritization of theory over practice while undergoing apprenticeship. Listen in as Doug explains what makes Resilient Performance Systems stand out in the PT industry; flaws in the education system regarding prerequisites, accessibility, tests and exams, and loans; and how apprenticeships in today’s world should have a different approach compared to traditional methods of teaching. In leading SEI, Tony works directly with the Department of Defense in providing training to active duty special operations personnel through customized Leadership, Medical, Tactical, and Mountaineering courses. The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-417 – Robert Owen Hamilton – Beyond Average (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4417.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello and welcome to episode 4-417 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  Welcome to all my endurance friends as the summer winds down up here in the northern hemisphere.  Maybe you're wrapping up your season or deep into training for that last fall marathon.  The September weather we've been having is more like August weather.  It's been warm this week and dry for quite a while.  The days are getting precipitously short, it's dark in the morning and dark in the afternoon and soon it will be dark all the time here in New England like the bottom of some deep, cold well with a small circle of sunlight at the top peeking in to signal the long lonesome memory of sunny days past and the long winter ahead.  In the old, farming days this would be the time of plenty.  The crops are in the larders are full and the new beer and wine are fermenting.  This is the time of Thanksgiving and Oktoberfest.  Before the slow march into the winter solstice.  The ancients saw it, literally, as the death of the world.  I have just started running again after taking two weeks off.  I came out of that last marathon really beat up and decided to give it a bit of a rest.  I looked back over the Spring and Summer and realized that I've run 10 races over the last few months.  It was what I wanted to do after spending so much time heads down training.  But it does leave you a bit beat up I've been getting OllieDog the border collie puppy out with me more often as well.  He's going to be a big dog. Today we have an interview with Robert Hamilton Owens who reached out to me to talk about aging and fitness.  Robert is one of those guys with an agenda or passion.  His passion is convincing people that age is no excuse to not do stuff.  You can do more than you think.  Robert has written a book and speaks on this topic.  He's circulates in that hard core ‘we can do anything group' with Joe DeSena from Spartan and David Goggins.  He is a retired Special Ops Pararescue guy.  He's an ironman.  He's had a TV show and been a minister.  He did that 7 marathons in 7 days thing with McGillivray last year.  He is known as ‘the fittest 66 year old in the world'.  Most recently he went through the equivalent of the BUDS SEAL training Hell Week.  That's the thing you see with them shivering in the surf and carrying logs around.  Interesting guy.  A bit of a force of nature.  The kind of guy you want on your side in a fight.  One thing you may or may not notice is me getting a bit less interactive towards the end on the interview.  I had set myself up in a conference room to take the call and someone found me towards the end and was sitting there waiting for me to finish which kinda cramped my style.  That whole separating work from hobby thing again. Today I decided to wrap the whole episode around the concepts of aging and what we are really capable of.  In section one I talk about what the current thinking is on age and fitness.  In section two we delve into that ‘giving more than you think you are capable of' topic and try to weed out truth from magical thinking.   That's the question my friends.  How much more can you get out of yourself and why aren't you getting it?  Can you live up to or beyond your potential?  Do you even want to? Let's find out. On with the show! … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – The effect of age on fitness - http://runrunlive.com/the-boston-problem   Voices of reason – the conversation Robert Hamilton Owens ABOUT ROBERT Robert Hamilton Owens is a man of many hats. He's been and done a lot – mountain climbing, radio and TV personality, keynote speaker, minister, Ironman, philanthropist, triathlete, Special Ops Pararescueman, and father of five – to name a few. But of all the pursuits he's undertaken, there's one title that best describes this literal force of nature: Robert is The Fittest 66-Year-Old in the World. Period. Robert was born and raised in Orange County, California without ever having met his parents. Adopted by a California judge, Robert was raised as a special-needs child who was unable to play kickball with his classmate due to the corrective shoes he was required to wear through sixth grade. In high school, Robert trained under legendary US Olympic swim coach Jon Urbanchek in Anaheim, and later raced outrigger canoes from Long Beach to Catalina with the Dana Point Outrigger Club on his off time from lifeguarding in San Clemente.  In 1973, he entered the U.S. Air Force Special Operations School with a class of 157 men to train as a Pararescueman, the Air Force equivalent of a Navy SEAL. Of those 157, only seven made the through and graduated, one of which was Robert, who was designated Team Leader. As an Air Force Pararescueman, Robert was routinely called upon to risk his life to rescue those in perilous situations, such as climbers stranded on Denali, the highest mountain in North America. As a climber himself, Robert later attempted a winter ascent up the mountain, making it nearly three quarters of the way up before being blown off by 80-mile-per-hour, -100-degree winds. But to his credit, and to Robert's understanding to this day, no one has ever made it to the top in those conditions. After Robert left the military, he began smuggling literature into the old Soviet Union, and smuggling official documents back out. The documents were violations of the Helsinki Peace Accords under the Carter administration. Robert Hamilton Owens In total, Robert has completed 12 Ironman Triathlons – from Florida to Oahu to South Africa – and is one of the few Ironmen to complete both Honolulu in 1980 as well as Kona in 2003. “My goal is to be the longest active Ironman in the world,” he says. The 140.6-mile Ironman (2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and 26.3-mile run, all done without a break) is among the shorter competitions Robert's put himself through. At age 65 he embarked on the 238 mile “300 of Sparta Endurance Race,” an eight-day endurance race in Greece to help raise over $315,000 for the families of fallen Navy SEAL contractors who died at Benghazi. A mere four days before his 66th birthday, Robert took on the SEALFIT's Kokoro 50-Hour Challenge, originally created to train Special Operations Candidates. He was the oldest of the group by 25 years to finish, and at the same time became the oldest to ever complete the challenge, for which he was awarded the “Most Advanced Age Ever Award” by SEALFIT. And then without any training, he took on the Ironman Mexico – his 12th Ironman. And in January, 2018, Robert took on and completed "The World Marathon Challenge – 7 Marathons 7 Continents 7 Days.” But for Robert, a father of five, none of this is done for self-aggrandizement. While he loves the challenge, he derives his greatest pleasure from helping others – motivating, educating, and inspiring them. He does it for one, such as helping a ready-to-quit Ironman competitor and cancer survivor to continue and finish the race, and he does it for many. For more than 25 years, Robert has been speaking before audiences as large as 50,000, from San Diego to Moscow on motivational and leadership topics. His past clients include the Navy SEALs, New York Jets, The Baltimore Ravens, The Philadelphia Eagles, South African Parliament, the Vietnamese Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Philippines Joint Chiefs of Staff. He's been invited to address the South African Parliament, and has made five trips teaching officials in the Vietnamese Department of Foreign Affairs. During 22 of those years, he hosted the regional Fox network television program “Leadership for Changing Times” in Reno, Nevada where, by two separate Governor's appointments, he also served for eight years on the Nevada State Judicial Ethics Committee. While it takes extraordinary physical condition to be in the Air Force Special Ops or to best the many Ironmans he's bested, Robert will readily affirm that success in these physical endeavors – and in life in general – is as much a matter of will and mental attitude as it is physical conditioning. When most have long since slowed as they approach their golden years, The Fittest 66-Year-Old in the World continues to routinely take on unprecedented challenges, and to help others see what can be achieved in their own lives.   Section two – 40% more– Outro Well, my friends, You have used your willpower to rise above the limitations of age and poor thinking to strive valiantly, giving 140% to the end of the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-417.  Since we talked I took some time off.  I was really beat up after that BeanTown marathon try.  I shut it down for the better part of two weeks.  I started up again this week.  The tendonitis in my butt still hurts but I feel relatively fit.  I've only got a couple weeks of training before I have to taper for BayState.  We'll see what I can do but I'm not mortgaging the house on this one.  I counted up the races I ran this summer and it turns out there were somewhere around 10.  That's a lot for an old boy.  They released the statistics for Boston today.  Even with making the cutoffs 5 minutes faster you would have needed to beat the qualification standard by 1:39 to get in for 2020, or about 3200 runner who qualified and didn't get in.  It's a brave new world.  I'll tell you a couple Ollie dog stories to take you out.  I'm getting tried and I need to wrap this up.  First, I had him out yesterday on a trail run with me.  My day got hosed so I couldn't get out until it was almost dark and it was pissing rain.  There's a point, about 3 miles in where it opens up and you can get to the pond off of the trail.  There's an opening.  I usually stop here to let the dog drink or swim, not this dog, the last dog, Buddy.  I pulled out to the opening and told Ollie to go get a drink.  Now, this late in the day, with a full heavy rain going, the surface of the pond looked solid as a cement floor.  He went running into it as if he wa going to run out onto this floor pretty much full tilt scamper…and went right under.  He was quite surprised and managed to dog paddle himself back to dry land.  This morning I got up and he had been sick.  He left me a fairly disgusting mess in his crate.  I toweled him off and took his blanket out.  I carried the hard-plastic liner out and hosed it off outside.  I went upstairs and through the towel and blanket in the washer and turned it on.  That's how my day started.  Then my wife gets up and starts yelling at me for running the washing machine at 6:00 AM!  I explained the situation and she asks me one of those questions that I can't answer.  “Did he eat anything he wasn't supposed to?”  He's a 4-month old, high-energy, border collie pup.  If he's awake he's trying to eat something and it's usually something he's not supposed to.  That's it.  I've reverted to being a beginner parent again.  My life is wrapped around picking up bodily fluids and trying to keep my young friend from killing himself.  I'm not sure I'm equipped for it anymore! May the gods lend me patience. And I'll see you out there. MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Rachel -> Coach Jeff ->

Doug is introspective, humble, and transparent.  His diverse experience and education, as well as his own practice of learning and reading has given him an wide lens perspective on many domains of the human performance sector.  As a field (and with anything) it’s easy to make noise, or get noticed, based on extreme viewpoints, often talking about avoiding a common practice in coaching, such as “don’t squat”, “don’t lift weights”, “don’t internal cue”, “don’t do drills”, “don’t foam roll”, etc. Doug is a coach who really makes me think in his drive to find the truth in things, and avoid the tribe mentality in coaching stances.  In the spirit of that, I wanted to tackle some facets of the field that tend to be looked at in a black and white frame, but in reality are more grey, which is in the realms of rotational core training, self-organization and when to intervene in coaching versus letting athletes figure things out themselves unimpeded. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Doug’s transition from the military to physical therapy and his approach to learning and growing in the field Concepts on core-bracing and anti-rotation versus a more fluid and dynamic view on trunk training Ideas on self-organization in athletics: when and how to intervene “When you prepare to be good enough at a lot of different things, you recognize patterns and commonalities across these skillsets, across these diverse fields” “When it comes to learning, people love formulas… but now I realize that learning is a lot more messy” “There is always this range between being a specialist and a generalist” “I think reading outside your field is what helps you to connect dots and see the bigger picture” “Scientists and all us of want to prove certain things, and often times, just confirm our biases” “If you don’t see the bigger picture, then that’s where we get these silos between strength and conditioning, and physical therapy, and sport coaches, and all of these things exist on a continuum” “For most people, I don’t know if a palloff press is dynamic enough or challenging enough… you want to integrate that stiffness in a contextually specific way” “I don’t teach people specific bracing techniques, because people do that stuff reflexively well, with the caveat that you’re putting them in a good position” “We’ve made lifting weights way too difficult, it’s not calculus” “Every intervention has un-intended consequences” “If the key to rotational performance is to relax and get really stiff…. If that’s what we are really chasing from a rotational performance standpoint, if we are tell people when they do these activities to deliberately brace, are we inhibiting their ability to relax?” “If you only have one way to do something, then under stress, you have no options!” “I think it’s dangerous to assume that every movement that emerges organically is best for the athlete, because it might not be a choice, so you want to give people choices and at least give them the requisite foundational joint positions or motor skills,

With a one-year-old son and anotheron the way, in 1997, he took a position as a PararescueInstructor at Kirtland AFB, NM. Joe was qualified toteach and lead all blocks of instruction: Aircraft and Jump Ops, Weapons-Tactics,Technical Rope, C2 and Dirt Medicine. He was also a member of the Special Tacticsand Recovery Specialist (STaRS) Parachute Demonstration Team. With a stern push from a young wife who wanted a better life for her family, in 1998Joe started college and received his bachelor’s degree in 2000 by attending classesevery weekend from 7-5 both Saturday and Sunday, ultimately leading to hiscommission as an officer in February of 2001. Joe was selected out of OTS as the 4thCombat Rescue Officer, a new career field the Air Force created to lead andcommand Pararescueman and SERE specialist. Joe completes his masters degree in2007.His last 15 years as an officer were a blur except for those two tours in Hawaii. Lotsof surfing and SEA travel. When not in the Pacific, multiple deployments presentedcomplex leadership challenges which he took head on. Post 9/11 years werebookend by death of teammates and success in harrowing missions. In the middlewas a tour as the first CRO to command the Pararescue School, where he was firedafter a year. That assignment is a book in itself.During his entire career, Joe unapologetically took on the overwhelming briefcaseattitude of the conventional Air Force with his backpack mentality on behalf of hismission and men. Ultimate career satisfaction came as Joe was selected for and hadtwo amazing years as the 38 th Rescue Squadron Commander. He and his team did itright, pushing forward many progressive training methods that are still in placetoday. As Joe turned 52, and his youngest son was a year away from College. It was time.He had done all he could do. Admittedly, he grew dissatisfied with DoD directionand with the vice grip sequestration and continuing resolution put on the force. Hepurposely retired without fan fair. Fully satisfied that he left it all on the table andenergized to be a capitalist in his next life. But first…A sabbatical at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017 was well deserved. As Joe haddone with his oldest son, he taught his youngest son to skydive and they took acouple of surf trips to Costa Rica and Baja. Once he was in in college, Meghan and Joeput their household belongings in storage and traveled Southeast Asia – Singapore,Bali and Thailand for four months.Back in the states, his job search started in early 2018. “It was fun, I interviewedthem more than they interviewed me. I want my second life to be epic.”Joe settled on a small company that installs wireless infrastructure for Verizon andTMobile. He loves it, its complex. He has daily influence over 32m in revenue, as hequickly took to running the sales pipeline, P&L of three divisions, HR, logistics andall operations. Likely not Joe’s final resting place.“I desire more responsibility, complexity and a more progressive executive team towork with, but I started in a great place for my capitalistic journey. I validated thatmy military leadership traits and problem solving abilities absolutely transfer to afor profit organization. I love every minute of it. Meghan and I have big plans for ourfuture.”Joe and Meghan reside in Neptune Beach, a costal community in Jacksonville FL.Concerned by the high divorce rate and broken families a military life can create. They are developing a program to help young married Special Operation couples notonly stay, but thrive together during and after their service to this great nation.Links LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephbarnard/Email: Joe.bd.33@gmail.comAdvertisersTitan HST https://www.titanhst.com/

Selection and indoctrination. Underwater Egress Training. Combat Diver Course. Advanced Paramedic Training. Airborne Training. Military Free Fall. Survival and Rescue. Rope Climbing. Pararescuemen (also known as PJs) are United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and Air Combat Command (ACC) operators tasked with recovery and medical treatment of personnel in humanitarian and combat environments. The pipeline to become a PJ is long and arduous. The maroon beret worn by Pararescuemen and Combat Rescue Officers was authorized by HQ USAF in 1966 and is the second beret to be authorized for universal wear, after the US Army Special Forces Beret. The beret symbolizes the blood sacrificed by fellow Pararescuemen and their devotion to duty by aiding others in distress. Brian Silva is a former PJ Team Leader and Indoc Instructor. He enlisted in the USAF to be a PJ in 2005 because he wanted more out of his life and felt like he was called to give more. He decided to join Pararescue because he loved the mission, no matter what... you are going to save lives. In this episode Brian shares what it takes to be a PJ and what he's seen from students arriving at Indoc unprepared. Robert is a retired US Army Armor and Recruiter/Retention MSG turned Fortune 50 executive. When an Airman needs saving, it’s the PJs duty to do everything they can to bring them home. As members of Air Force Special Operations, Pararescue (PJ) specialists rescue and recover downed aircrews from hostile or otherwise unreachable areas. These highly trained experts perform rescues in every type of terrain and partake in every part of the mission, from search and rescue, to combat support to providing emergency medical treatment, in order to ensure that every mission is a successful one. A lifelong student of living, Matt Schollard believes the purpose of existence is experience, exploration of Self, and evolution. Raised globally, his exposure to a multitude of cultures at an early age left a lasting impact on his quest to find 'meaning' in life. Inspired by Eastern philosophies, punk rock, yoga, windsurfing, and the overwhelming commonalities he identified in the people of Earth, Matt shaped his own unique guiding principles that have lit the way along a diverse and inspiring path. Upon reaching legal adulthood, after an unfortunate skateboarding misunderstanding forced him to leave Australia, Matt decided that he needed to seek out the 'hardest job in the world' to test his potential. Following his will & wind, he found himself in the years-long quest to become a US Air Force Pararescueman (PJ).
