Do you think you might benefit from psychedelics, but have concerns about potential risks? In this conversation, I speak with Dr. Alexander Belser about psychedelics, from anecdotal benefits to the chemical breakdowns and reactions of psychedelic drugs. We discuss common drugs like psilocybin and MDMA to indigenous traditions around ayahuasca to lesser-known psychedelics like ibogaine. Psychedelics are being studied for potential benefits for treating depression, PTSD, anxiety, and more. For the average person, do the benefits of taking psychedelics outweigh the risks? And how do you know which psychedelics are right for you? Alex and I discuss anecdotal experiences and research on psychedelics, and the behaviors that can reduce potential harms. In this episode, we get into: What Are Psychedelics? Psilocybin (Shrooms), MDMA, Ketamine, LSD, & Ibogaine Treating Addiction With Psychedelics Ayahuasca and Appropriation From Indigenous Cultures The Science Behind Microdosing How To Safely Experiment With Psychedelics and If It's Right For You For more from Dr. Alex Belser, find him on Instagram @alex.belser or online at https://alexbelser.com/. What if the way we care for new mothers is all wrong? Not just lacking. Not just outdated. But built on a model that misses the heart and soul of what postpartum truly is — and what it could be.When I was a home birth midwife, postpartum care was the care. I'd visit mamas and babies at home five or six times in the first few weeks. We'd talk about everything — from latch to lochia, sleep deprivation to soul shifts. It wasn't "extra." It was essential. It's part of why I went into medicine, because as a midwife I saw too often, how in this precious, vulnerable, formative window for mothers and babies - care just disappeared for the mother after the baby was born. A first visit may have been 6 or 8 weeks after the birth, by which time mothers were struggling alone with overwhelm, breastfeeding challenges, or worse, anxiety, depression, isolation, and sometimes they'd given up breastfeeding because they had no support. And when they did get care, all too often they had to sit in waiting rooms, a baby and toddler often in tow, waiting for an appointment only to get 15 minutes with a doctor whose had no idea to support mothers postpartum. This week on On Health, I'm joined by my long-time colleague and kindred spirit Dr. Eva Zasloff — a fellow family physician, artist, mother, and fellow revolutionary in postpartum care — to talk about the radical simplicity and profound necessity of caring for mothers in their homes, in their own rhythm, and on their own terms. Inside the Episode We Talk About:The surprising (and heartbreaking) truth about conventional postpartum visitsWhy 20-minute clinic appointments can do more harm than goodEva's bold leap from family doctor to founder of Tova Health — a home-based, whole-person care model serving over 600 familiesThe “twilight zone” of early motherhood — and how we can hold space for itWhat home visits offer that clinic visits never canWhy postpartum depression and anxiety are often symptoms of a broken systemThe healing power of birth stories, coconut oil massages, and Zoom mama circles that make a differenceWhat Eva is doing with Tova Health, and what I'm doing with The Mama Pathway, are not just beautiful experiences for mothers— they're necessary for maternal health. It's a return to wisdom we've always known. And it's a model I dream of seeing in communities everywhere. If you're a doula, a midwife, a family doc, or a mama (or someone who loves one), this episode will touch you deeply — and perhaps inspire you to bring this care into your own community or at least raise your awareness about the importance of listening to, being with, and supporting new mothers. Join us to hear Talia's story. Talia Nepper is the proud mom of two young children and a passionate artist whose creative journey has been vital to her healing. While she works as a web developer to support her family, her art, advocacy, and mental health journey define her true passions. Her motherhood journey has been shaped by her experiences with postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and rage. These challenges led her to discover the transformative power of art therapy, trauma therapy, and support through local postpartum groups, family, and friends. Talia has become an outspoken advocate for mental health, with a particular focus on breaking the stigma around postpartum struggles. Recently, Talia embraced her identity within the LGBTQ+ community, further expanding her sense of self. Navigating her divorce is a process that continues to deepen her journey of self-discovery and healing. She is the author of Unveiling Motherhood: Poems of Postpartum Resilience, a collection of poetry and artwork that reflects her raw and honest experiences with pregnancy, birth, and the often-overlooked realities of postpartum life. Through her body of work, Talia hopes to offer support, solidarity, and empowerment to others facing similar struggles. Show Highlights: Talia's story of her first pregnancy with Liam (now 5), which was unexpected but very wanted Anxiety plagued her throughout the pregnancy because of her autoimmune issues, her initial doctor's negative outlook, and pressure to have a natural birth. At 42 weeks, she FINALLY was in labor at a birthing center with a midwife. As problems popped up, she was transported to a hospital, and the issues began to mount. Finally, her son was born via C-section at 10.5 lbs. and 23 in. long! Sepsis, medications, no realization of what was happening, and not being seen or heard Trouble bonding with her newborn son Finding a therapist who was a good match and how Talia began exploring art therapy Acknowledging postpartum depression, rage, anxiety, and feelings of shame and failure Talia's second pregnancy (at only 9 months postpartum) with Luna (now 3) brought difficulties in different ways. Feeling resentment about a pregnancy Talia wasn't ready for The birth: a planned C-section, delivery, and postpartum anxiety after birth Talia's book is the best creative outlet for her self-expression and healing. The Barbell Mamas Podcast | Pregnancy, Postpartum, Pelvic Health
Have you been told to wait six weeks before returning to exercise after having your baby? This long-established guideline is being challenged by new research and expert consensus. As a pelvic floor physical therapist, CrossFit athlete, and mom of two, I'm pulling back the curtain on what early postpartum recovery really looks like and why that six-week rule deserves a serious update. The postpartum period often feels like whiplash—from constant medical attention during pregnancy to suddenly feeling abandoned once baby arrives. While your newborn gets thoroughly examined, your recovery becomes an afterthought, typically reduced to a brief check at six weeks postpartum. But what about those crucial early weeks when everything feels strange and uncertain in your body?In this deeply personal episode, I share my own Mother's Day reflections (including the moment my child spilled water on my laptop!) before diving into the transformative potential of early pelvic floor physical therapy. Around two weeks postpartum, these appointments provide more than just physical assessment—they offer space to process your birth story without judgment, clarify which sensations are normal versus concerning, and develop a personalized plan for returning to movement. You'll learn why feeling heaviness around your vagina doesn't necessarily mean prolapse, why your core feels foreign after birth, and why gentle early movement can significantly benefit your mental health without harming your recovery. Drawing from both research and clinical experience, I explain how my own family history of postpartum depression shaped my approach to postpartum exercise and why current evidence supports a more individualized timeline for return to activity.Whether you're currently navigating the fourth trimester, planning for a future pregnancy, or supporting someone who is, this episode provides crucial information that's often missing from standard postpartum care. Ready to transform how you think about recovery after birth? Listen now, and let's reclaim the postpartum journey together.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. Send us a textIn this episode of the Aligned Birth Podcast, doula Rachael Hutchins and doula Hannah Atterberry delve into the world of birth doula support discussing not only how doulas can impact birth, but their own doula parntership and agency as well. From highlighting the significance of childbirth education and the multifaceted role of a doula to emphasizing the need for support during pregnancy and postpartum, they also explore the benefits of having a doula present during labor and the impact of doula partnerships on their work and client experiences. They emphasize that it's not just about the method of birth but about being seen, supported, and respected throughout the process that creates an empowering birth experience. They explore the philosophy behind birth plans, advocating for a deeper understanding of personal values rather than a checklist approach. The discussion transitions into the role of advocacy in the birth space, highlighting the need for doulas to empower birthing parents and facilitate communication with providers. They also address the importance of prenatal preparation for advocacy, ensuring that parents are equipped to make informed decisions during labor.Support the showWant to show your support? What if the way we talk about birth is shaping the way we experience it—before it even begins? Joining me to unpack this is journalist, professor, and author of Invisible Labor: The Untold Story of the Cesarean Section, Rachel Somerstein. Together we explore: The hidden biases and ingrained language that shape how we view birth—why terms like "failure to progress" reinforce harmful narratives. Why flexibility is a powerful tool in birth and parenting—and why we so often slip into rigidity when we feel anxious or out of control. The societal pressure to “do birth right” and how it impacts a birthing person's experience. The troubling reality of whose life we prioritize in birth and what that says about our values in America. Why do some births lead to trauma while others don't? What the research reveals about the difference. The importance of preparing for a c-section—even if it's not part of your birth plan—so that you feel safe and supported if it happens. Simple but impactful shifts that could make c-sections a more positive experience. With 1 in 3 births resulting in a c-section, this is a conversation every birthing person deserves to hear. Tune in for a thought-provoking deep dive into the realities of modern birth and what we can do to reclaim agency in the process. LEARN MORE ABOUT MY GUEST:
