Carlos Greaves returns to the podcast for a closer look at the surprisingly authoritarian role of parenting, beginning with his 18-month-old daughter's new favorite activity: climbing things that are clearly designed for five-year-olds and launching herself toward a seven-foot drop. With essentially no childcare experience before becoming a dad—he had never even changed a diaper until the nurse handed him his daughter in the hospital—Greaves describes figuring out parenting through research, YouTube, books, and an engineer's instinct to identify what he doesn't know, while remaining skeptical of advice that seems to reverse itself every five years. He and Ophira Eisenberg wrestle with the line between letting kids make mistakes and protecting them from hurting themselves or other people, with Greaves admitting that he currently operates at “dad reflex distance,” close enough to catch his daughter but far enough away that she learns to solve problems herself. That tension leads naturally into the mythology of childhood: Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the little stories parents tell to make life easier. Greaves remembers his father initially refusing to participate in Santa because he considered it lying, then eventually sitting his eight- or nine-year-old son down to explain the truth—only to be hit with the immediate existential question, “If Santa Claus isn't real, does that mean God isn't real?” Greaves now sees those childhood myths differently, remembering the pleasure of watching younger siblings discover Christmas magic and deciding that if you are going to lie to your kids, it should be for their benefit rather than simply to make your own life easier. The conversation also takes aim at the impossible standards of modern parenting, from organic cotton and wooden toys to BPA-free bottles and the endless question of what, exactly, has replaced the thing labeled “BPA free,” before Greaves offers his own survival tactic for parenting's tiny dictators: eat your snacks in secret before they become smart enough to notice. When Ophira asks what he would tell a child who eventually wants to become either a comedian or a politician, Greaves's answer is revealingly consistent with his satirical worldview: he can live with either, as long as they do not become an asshole—and preferably, she becomes an electrical engineer.

So Jo gets to Mary's place and Mary is PUMPED to see her because she thinks she's her midwife. Mary realizes that she's not a midwife and Jo tells her who she is. She tries to make a run for it but when she gets outside, the bounty hunters are there. To make matters worse, Mary's husband hired hitmen to kill her. So Mary & Jo have to work together. They're able to fend off the bounty hunters and the hitmen for a while. The bounty hunter offered Jo $100k to help them but she can't be bought! Unfortunately for her, her partner can. Turns out, he's been working with the bounty hunters for a while - giving them tips and what not. It all comes out when Jo is on a FaceTime call with her doctor brother who is helping her walk through how to check how far along in labor Mary is. Now her partner is holding her family hostage as the bounty hunter comes in and shoots Jo and takes Mary. She tracks them down at the nearby airport and calls her boss for backup. Unfortunately, Mary goes into labor and Jo helps deliver the baby. The ex-husband's new boo thang is actually the one who put the hit out, so she ends up taking the baby but it's a fake baby and the plane ends up crashing. Everyone else is safe, YAY! No Shoot Around this Friday either, so they're packing everything into one episode.   They start with the good stuff: the NBA dropped a taste of the schedule, and the Christmas Day slate is loaded — Spurs-Knicks, Heat-Celtics, Sixers-Lakers (hello LeBron revenge tour), Thunder-Wolves, and Nuggets-Warriors closing it out. Bob and Rob debate whether Denver deserved the marquee spot over Dallas, and that turns into a bigger conversation about how much longer Jokic and Steph stick around their current teams — and why neither of them should ever, ever run for office.   From there it's opening week previews, a Pistons discussion that gets real about the Jalen Duren contract standoff, and Bob's old war stories about guys faking injuries to force a new deal. Then the Kawhi Leonard stuff. Another secret endorsement deal surfaced this week — this time with Daktronics — and the guys walk through it, plus the resurfaced details from the Lakers' 2019 free agency pitch that the league is now investigating. It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Yesterday I walked into Target looking for a journal and walked out with a lesson I had to bring to you. I overheard a mom tell her daughter they couldn't get the supplies she wanted, and something clicked. I bought that little girl everything she needed, then kept going from store to store looking for more people to help. This episode is not about what I did. It is about the 'once I, then I' trap that keeps you from making a difference right now, and why the impact you think is small to you could be massive for someone else. Key Takeaways The bar for doing good is far lower than most people believe. You do not need a certain status or income level to create real impact today. The 'once I, then I' mentality is a trap. Waiting until you have more before you give keeps you from using what you already have. When you commit to making a difference, your mind starts finding opportunities everywhere. Watching your hard work pay off for someone else fuels you to work harder and give more. Find a school supply section at a Target, Walmart, or similar store this week and look for a family that needs a hand. Buy something. Do not announce your name. Audit your current resources: time, money, skills, or connections. Identify one specific way you can offer that resource to someone in your circle or community before the week ends. ABOUT SANTA AND PETE It's the first Christmas without Grandma and a difficult time for the family, until Grandpa (James Earl Jones) decides to share a story with his ten-year-old grandson Terence. Checking that list twice. Looking at a globe to see if anything's changed. You know the stuff. We meet Grandpa Nicolas decorating his house for the first Christmas since his wife passed away. His daughter Cassie shows up with her husband James and son Terence and they all start to decorate the tree. Little Terence pulls out a Santa ornament. Grandpa insists there's one more ornament in there that goes with Santa. Sure enough, there is one more ornament of some random dude. Terence is like who is this? Grandpa Nicolas is like well have I got a story for you. Before Santa was Santa, he was Saint Nicolas, a Christian Bishop and Patron Saint of Children who would travel around, giving presents to children. One day he is arrested by the Spanish government who suspect he is actually a spy and their concerns only grow when they discover that he carries around a book called The Book of Life that has a ton of names in it and stuff about each of those people. Gotta be honest...sounds like a spy. While in jail, he meets a guy named Peter who is shocked when this old dude knows his name and knows that he wants to travel the world. When Pete finds out that he's St. Nicolas, they spend the night talking, and Pete decides to bust St. Nick out. They become partners and years later they decide to head to the New World. Before they leave they are approached by a dude who wants them to find someone named Elizabeth Van Olden to give her an engagement ring and a promise to join her as soon as he can. Santa and Pete are shocked to find out that the New World is not the perfect paradise they had heard about. People are too busy to celebrate Christmas and there's hostility between the settlers and the Native Americans. There's no open lodging for the famous Santa and Pete, so they're forced to sleep in a barn for the night where they find a little girl named Marlene. She tells them that she lost her parents while they were building a cabin in the woods. Santa promises that they'll find her parents and Pete is like whoa that's a big promise. Santa and Pete meet with the governor to ask for help finding Marlene's parents. He tells them that the Native Americans took them and he's planning an attack. So that's not great. On Christmas Eve, they travel by carriage and reindeer to go visit the Dangola family, including Janet who Pete thinks is FINEEEEE. On the way back, they are stopped by the Native Americans. They say they've been waiting for the man with the white beard to fulfill the prophecy. Santa requests they return Marlene's parents and they give Santa a bright red coat. Santa and Pete begin delivering presents and find that the village boot boy has made Nick some black leather boots. Arriving at the governor's house they realize there are no traditional wooden clogs to put gifts in and end up going down the chimney and leaving gifts in stockings instead. They also meet the governor's maid, who turns out to be Elizabeth Van Olden, and after giving her the engagement ring she gives Nick a bright red hat. Returning to the Dangola house, the Native Americans appear with Marlene's parents. The snow starts to come down super heavy and they're now unable to navigate the snow in their carriage. Maria's husband, Big Manuel, replaces the wheels with runners, transforming it into a sleigh, now with 6 reindeer. As Santa and Pete leave, the sleigh suddenly lifts into the sky and they fly away into the night. Back in the present, Terence wakes up in the middle of the night and finds that the Book of Life is in the living room. He finds his name inside and finds out that he is related to Pete. But when he tries to tell Grandpa Nicolas, the book disappears and he cannot remember anything he read. Classic Santa.
