To kick off the very first episode of “We Got Company”, Sebastian sits down with comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look into the minds of two stand-up masters. Jerry and Sebastian pull back the curtain on the comedic process, debating the risks of testing out new material at dinner parties and questioning whether either of them can actually be considered "social." Jerry hilariously quizzes Sebastian on exactly how much prep he did for this conversation. Sebastian opens up about how meditation has completely changed his life—and credits Jerry for being the one who pushed him to finally try it. Despite being in the business for over half a century, Jerry shares his deep gratitude for the industry and explains why he still finds pure joy on stage. Jerry turns the tables by pressing Sebastian to reveal his ultimate, pie-in-the-sky show business opportunity. Plus, you won't want to miss the end of the episode, where Jerry surprises Sebastian with an incredibly special gift to celebrate the launch of the show! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. While this publication mostly focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area, it will also cover these topics wherever they occur. This newsletter started as my public notes on what's happening as tech billionaires and propagandists attempt a takeover of local politics. Longer explanation here. Gil Durán was born in Tulare, California, in 1976. The grandson of Mexican immigrant farmworkers, he got his first taste of work in the fields, but took an interest in journalism after winning the local newspaper's "My Mom Is the Best" contest in the fifth grade. In the tenth grade, his family moved from California to Kentucky, where he dropped out of high school for a year, then returned and befriended an English teacher who encouraged him to apply to college. He graduated DePauw University in 1998 and started his journalism career at the San Jose Mercury News. As the newspaper industry hit turbulence, he pivoted to politics and spent ten years as an advisor to politicians including Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein, and Kamala Harris. In 2018, he returned to journalism as California opinion editor of The Sacramento Bee, and then became editorial page editor of the San Francisco Examiner. Now an independent journalist, he publishes two newsletters: The Nerd Reich, focused on extremist tech politics, and FrameLab, focused on political language. My guest this week is Carollynn Xavier—Orthodox catechumen , longtime touring comedian, and now host of a brand-new interview show coming to Logos Cinema. We get into Carollynn's years doing stand-up and touring, what life as a comedian actually looks like, how Orthodoxy fits into all of it, and why she's now trading some of that stand-up time for sitting down with interesting people. Her new show is pretty simple: no script, no formula, no manufactured outrage. Just genuine curiosity about people and seeing where the conversation goes. Sometimes it gets deep, sometimes it gets weird, sometimes it apparently ends up at monster trucks. We talk comedy, faith, curiosity, listening, storytelling, and why actually talking to people—and being interested in them—might be more important than ever.
