In this episode, I sit down with percussionist Colin Currie for a wide-ranging conversation about curiosity, originality, live performance, and the lifelong pursuit of musical meaning. Colin is one of the most influential percussionists of our time, known for his deep commitment to contemporary music, his close collaboration with composers, and his transformative interpretations of Steve Reich's work. This conversation explores how curiosity, patience, and listening have shaped his career and his approach to music-making.We begin by talking about technology, access to recordings, and the changing landscape of music education. Colin reflects on growing up in a time when discovering music required effort, intention, and physical presence in libraries and record shops. He shares concerns about students learning pieces by copying online performances rather than developing their own ideas, and he speaks passionately about the importance of solitude, curiosity, and learning music on one's own terms.Colin traces his musical beginnings back to early childhood, from piano lessons at age five to his first drum lesson at six, describing the joy, excitement, and physical energy that initially drew him to percussion. He talks about how that sense of wonder has never left him and why live performance remains a magical, irreplaceable experience. We explore why percussion continues to evolve so rapidly, how technique has advanced across the field, and why musical intent always matters more than virtuosity alone.A significant portion of the conversation focuses on Colin's connection to contemporary music and the composers who shaped his artistic identity. He describes hearing The Rite of Spring as a teenager, discovering post-war modernist composers through library scores, and developing an instinctive attraction to music that felt strange, challenging, and unfamiliar. Colin shares how his love for new music was never about understanding it intellectually, but about responding to it emotionally and instinctively. We also dive deeply into Colin's relationship with Steve Reich, including their first meeting, their long-standing collaboration, and the formation of the Colin Currie Group. Colin reflects on recording Music for 18 Musicians at Abbey Road Studios, explaining how the goal was to capture the intensity and emotional risk of live performance rather than create a polished studio artifact. He talks about groove, sonority, emotional depth, and why Reich's music demands both precision and expressive freedom.Colin discusses his growing role as a conductor and how stepping onto the podium has changed the way he listens, leads, and collaborates with ensembles. He shares stories from recent performances, lessons learned from orchestral musicians, and how listening remains the central skill, whether playing or conducting. We also talk about his record label, Colin Currie Records, crowdfunding new projects, and the upcoming release of a Steve Reich album featuring Sextet, Double Sextet, Six Marimbas, and Dance Patterns. As we look ahead, Colin reflects on 2026 as a landmark year, including Steve Reich's 90th birthday, dozens of performances of Reich's music worldwide, and the premiere of Colin's 40th percussion concerto. This is a thoughtful, inspiring conversation about curiosity, commitment, and the lifelong responsibility of serving music.Music from the Episode:Mallet Quartet (Steve Reich - Colin Currie Group)Music for 18 Musicians - Section VI (Steve Reich - Colin Currie Group)Thank you for listening. Parents of under-fives in England are to be offered official advice on how long their children should spend watching TV or looking at computer screens. It comes as government research shows about 98% of children under two were watching screens on a daily basis - with parents, teachers and nursery staff saying youngsters were finding it harder to hold conversations or concentrate on learning. To discuss this further Nuala McGovern is joined by Kate Silverton, child counsellor and parenting author, and Professor Sonia Livingstone from the London School of Economics and author of Parenting for a Digital Future.
Robb Kelly, PhD – The Recovery Expert – was born in Manchester, England. He grew up in a family of musicians and developed a deep love for music at an early age. He was performing on stage by the age of nine. During his early twenties, he worked at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios as a session musician in London.Addiction was always close to his heart, as Dr. Kelly was born into a family with a history of alcoholism. He began drinking and using drugs at a young age, but he managed to stay on a path of success, moving to Oxford in the early 1980s to pursue a PhD in Psychology at the esteemed University of Oxford. He continued to drink heavily during his time in Oxford—yet still managed to complete his doctoral studies, earning a PhD in psychology in 1984.Even though he was a heavy drinker, no one would have predicted that he would end up living on the streets of Manchester, homeless and alone. He recalls a night when he had a staggering realization about his own alcoholism. It would later inspire two of his most popular catchphrases: “The Problem is not our Drinking, it is our Thinking” and “Step out of the Disease, and into the Solution.”Dr. Kelly was standing on a street corner one night in Manchester, body trembling from alcohol withdrawal. He stood in front of a liquor store, shaking and desperately waiting for it to open. He knew that as soon as he took that first sip of alcohol, he would feel relief. As soon as the store opened, he rushed inside. The clerk grabbed a bottle of vodka from the shelf and placed it in a brown paper bag before him. As he lifted the bag, his trembling stopped. His body ceased shaking, and his mind found peace. He hadn't even taken the first sip; it was just the promise of alcohol that stopped his shaking and eased his restlessness.Dr Robb Kelly Official Website: https://robbkelly.com/Unlocking Humanity with Ancient Knowledge | Host John Edmonds Kozma Hosted on Acast. The rock and roll legend, Billy J. Kramer, grew up in Bootle, a Liverpool suburb. Upon leaving school, he became a trainee engineer by day and aspiring singer by night, performing under the stage name Billy Kramer. Billy's performances at local rock clubs around Liverpool soon brought him to the attention of the one and only John Lennon. John urged Brian Epstein to sign Billy to an exclusive management contract. Billy jumped at the opportunity to become a full-time entertainer. Soon after, Billy was summoned to Brian's office to find John there waiting for him with the suggestion that he add the “J” to his name to give it a “rock and roll edge”. From that day forward, Billy has been known as Billy J. Kramer. In March of 1963, Billy was the first person to have a hit record with a Lennon-McCartney song, “Do You Want To Know A Secret,” which was written specially for him by John and Paul and produced by George Martin at Abbey Road Studios even before The Beatles recorded it.Billy toured extensively throughout the UK as the opening act for The Beatles both before and during Beatlemania. Billy also headlined tours with such greats as Del Shannon, Gene Pitney, and The Everly Brothers.Billy's recordings of the Lennon-McCartney compositions, “Bad To Me” along with “I'll Keep You Satisfied”, “From A Window”, and “I Call Your Name” all became international million sellers. He also had a smash hit with the Mort Shuman/John Leslie McFarland song, Little Children. Released as a double sided single, Bad To Me and Little Children have the unique distinction of being the highest entry into the Billboard charts at #8. That accomplishment has never been equalled.Billy's appearances on the Ed Sullivan show, Shindig, and Hullaballoo secured his place in rock ‘n roll history. In 1964, Billy performed as part of the legendary T.A.M.I. show along with such artists as James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes , Smokey Robinson, The Rolling Stones and many others. To commemorate his 50th anniversary in the music business, Billy recorded and released new material entitled “I Won The Fight”. Billy recently released his autobiography, “Do You Want To Know A Secret.”Billy continues to record, perform and promote his Storytellers show to international audiences. Please stick around at the end of the show for a really fantastic treat. Billy has lent us his brand new Christmas song, “Christmas Kinda Feeling…”
The Ripples nació en 2022.

The now London-based Polish pianist and composer Hania Rani quickly attracted fans with her 2019 album of solo piano works in the post-classical style, a blend of classical lyricism and minimalist patterns. Her later albums expanded to include electronics, and her voice; she is equally versed in the music of composers like Philip Glass and bands like Radiohead. But her new record is something different – a four part piano concerto with orchestra, called Non Fiction, which is a reflection on the human cost of war. The work was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, with a 45-piece orchestra and experimental instrumentalists Rakhi Singh (Manchester Collective), Jack Wylie (Portico Quartet), and percussionist/composer Valentina Magaletti. Abbey Road Studios in London, England was the world's first purpose-built recording studio. Opened way back in 1931, this building and the people inside have been at the cutting edge of recording technology for over 90s years. Abbey Road Studios is most famous for being where The Beatles recorded almost all of their music, but it also drove innovation with stereo recording, multitracks, editing, and the shift from analog to digital recording. In addition to all of those amazing Beatles records – which we'll get to – some other stuff recorded at Abbey Road includes Dark Side of the Moon and albums from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Oasis, the Hollies, Radiohead, and the Zombies. Music scores for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Marvel movies, and video game soundtracks for Halo, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. They even recorded some of Winston Churchill's famous speeches during World War II to help keep morale high. From classical roots to rock rebellion, Abbey Road's always been ahead of the game, rewriting rules along the way. So kick back, feel the beat, and join us as we explore the studio that turned sound into a revolution. Let's roll! Episode Playlist Check out our episode playlist here. The Bowers & Wilkins 801 isn't just another loudspeaker—it's the one Abbey Road Studios trusted when the music actually mattered. For 45 years, the 801 has been part of legendary recordings that shaped how we hear music, and now it's back in the spotlight with the 801 Abbey Road Limited Edition. Andy Kerr, Director of Marketing and Communications at Bowers & Wilkins, joins eCoustics CEO and Founder, Brian Mitchell to dig into how this speaker became the reference at the world's most famous studio, why Abbey Road didn't exactly choose it by accident, and what makes this anniversary edition more than just a fancy finish.Thank you to Denon, SVS and Shure for their support of our programming!www.svsound.comwww.denon.comwww.shure.comCredits:• Original intro music by The Arc of All. https://sourceoflightandpower.bandcamp.com• Voice Over Provided by Todd Harrell of SSP Unlimited. https://sspunlimited.com• Production by Mitch Anderson, Black Circle Studios. https://blackcircleradio.comDon't forget to check our website for daily updates on the latest electronics, news, recommendations, and deals on high-end audio, loudspeakers, earphones, TVs, and more.www.ecoustics.com#abbeyroadstudios #bowersandwilkins #studiomonitors #signatureseries #B&W801 #ecoustics #hifi #audiophile #hometheater #avtech #musicindustry #projectors #recordingstudios
Adam: You may have heard me talking here a couple of weeks ago about the Quarrelmen Beatles miniseries I'm doing. It's my birthday so I'm birthing it everywhere you get your podcasts plus I'm putting the first episode here too to tempt you into subscribing. You're not gonna be able to resist after hearing this episode that we did at none other than Abbey Road Studios when my band Stones n Roses was on tour there back in 2021. I told the other We Will Rank You hosts I'd have all the Beatles albums ranked within a year. Four years later, I've only recorded about half of them but here they come! You're not going to see any more episodes here until the one where all four OG hosts ranked- Well I'm not telling you which one. You'll have to wait and see and if you want to hear Jim and I rank an album in Liverpool, you'll just have to figure out how to spell Quarrelmen and go subscribe, won't you? WON'T you? We're on Facebook, Instagram and Threads too so do the thing. Breaking up the band to start a solo career? Nah but, for now, here's the Fab Four…. THE QUARRELMEN PODCAST #1Please Please Me ranked at Abbey RoadWhat's your most loved and least favorite song on the first Beatles album?! One, two, three, FAH! The Quarrelmen Beatles podcast miniseries kicks off with England's own Richard Merrett (Airhead/the Wilsons) and his young sons Frank and George Merrett ranking Please Please Me in the most famous studio in the world. Recorded back in 2021 at the end of the last Stones n' Roses UK tour, the California band recorded a version of "Revolution 9" with 1960s microphones used by "the boys" and Beatles Anthology, Rock Band and Love engineer Chris Bolster with Joe Wyatt (now Giles Martin's assistant). After a quick photoshoot of the band walking across THE street, singer Adam Gimbel welcomed the Merretts into the cozy Gatehouse studio to record the very first episode of the Quarrelmen. He had no idea it would be four busy, crazy years before the world would hear it. The kids are now senior citizens. The results are, quite simply, the most endearing Beatles podcast episode ever immortalized at Abbey Road....or anywhere else. Decades of fandom and childlike wonder collide with memories and a ranking of least and most favorites on the 1963 classic debut. "Wish You Were Here" von Pink Floyd erschien im Jahr 1975. "Wish You Were Here" ist der Nachfolger des Erfolgsalbums "The Dark Side Of The Moon". "Wish You Were Here" hat Pink Floyd auf eine ganz neue Entwicklungsebene gebracht. __________ Über diese Songs vom Album "Wish You Were Here" wird im Podcast gesprochen (19:30) – "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"(46:50) – "Welcome To The Machine"(53:00) – "Have A Cigar"(01:04:33) – "Wish You Were Here" __________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge: https://1.ard.de/pink-floyd-wish-you-were-here __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and “British Invasion” pioneers, The Zombies, todayannounce the release of Odessey & Oracle Mono Remastered on September 26th. The album, thefirst of four definitive physical reissues from their catalog, includes the classic songs “Time OfThe Season,” “Care of Cell 44,” and “This Will Be Our Year” and is a regular entry in “BestAlbums of All Time” lists in publications like Rolling Stone, NME, and Mojo Magazine. Therelease, which coincides with The Zombies' documentary, Hung Up On A Dream, marks the firsttime the band's original mono mix, remastered from studio tapes, has appeared on LP since therecord's British issue in 1968, presenting the album as they originally intended it to be heard.Pre-order the album on all formats here.Recorded primarily at London's legendary Abbey Road Studios in 1967, Odessey & Oracle wasself-produced in Mono on a shoestring budget by primary songwriters Rod Argent (keyboards/vocals) and Chris White (bass/vocals). Under last-minute pressure from their record label, thealbum was hastily remixed in the newly emerging Stereo format, which sacrificed key elementsfrom the Mono recording, most notably the beloved horn parts in “This Will Be Our Year”.The band today also share the first track off the album, the mono remastered version of “ThisWill Be Our Year”, with the horn parts restored. Although never released as a single, this deepcut has found a new life thanks to prominent uses in TV and film, including memorable scenes inMad Men, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Schitt's Creek, and covers by artists like FooFighters, OK Go and Susanna Hoffs. Its positive and uplifting message has been embraced bycouples as a popular wedding song, and become a staple of New Year's playlists. "We were always dissatisfied with the production of our records," Argent said in1971 of the Zombies' Decca work. "We wanted to produce an album before we broke upto satisfy ourselves." The result was a fearlessness that still rings fresh, that inventiondriven by the Zombies' stringent resources and their confidence in the songs. Most of "ARose for Emily" is simply piano and vocal, an Argent-Blunstone duet with streaks ofchoral sigh.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

To pay for his daughter Vienna's ballet school in Paris, he returns to pro golf—and chaos ensues. The film leans hard into callbacks, celebrity cameos, and legacy sequel nostalgia. Director: Kyle Newacheck Writers: Tim Herlihy & Adam Sandler Cast: Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin Ben Stiller as Hal L. (in sobriety group leadership) Bad Bunny as Happy's new caddy Benny Safdie as golf mogul Frank Manatee Additional Cast: Sunny Sandler (Vienna), Sadie Sandler, Travis Kelce, Margaret Qualley, John Daly, Rory McIlroy, Eminem (cameos), and more sport & music legends Production Notes: Produced by Happy Madison and STX Films, filmed in North Jersey over fall 2024; directed by Newacheck with music by Rupert Gregson-Williams. The production is built around cameo-heavy nostalgia and real-world athletes. Budget: Estimated at $30 million, modest compared to legacy sequel standards. Distribution: Released globally via Netflix on July 25, 2025. Reception: Critics remain divided—mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (65%) and Popcornmeter (~70%). Praise comes for Sandler's commitment and cameo spectacle; criticism centers on overreliance on callbacks, tonally uneven storytelling (including a shocking death), and lazy legacy sequel tropes. Some outlets called it a “cinematic disaster,” while others saw it as funny and heartfelt escapism. Rating out of 10 Cameo Filled Nostalgic Rounds of Maxi Golf Darryl: 2/10 Brian: 7.5/10 Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) Summary Set in a retro‑futuristic 1960s alternate universe (Earth‑828), Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm are already established heroes expecting their first child. Reviews praise cast chemistry, emotional grounding, and visual style—though tone is more serious than comic-minded critics expected. Some reviewers note a pacing lull and lack of overt humor from a director known for lighter work. Industry analysts call this the first confirmed MCU blockbuster of 2025—ushering in Phase 6 with confidence and momentum after previous underperformers. "Wish You Were Here" ist eine Liebeserklärung an den Ex-Pink-Floyd-Gitarristen Syd Barrett.

Send us a textPrepare to be swept away into the contrasting worlds of Los Angeles and London as Dalila Mya, a remarkable recording artist and physicist, takes center stage. We explore the stark differences between LA's glitzy, revenue-driven music industry and London's vibrant, indie scene. Dalila, a one-time child prodigy, shares her journey through the European music circuit and sheds light on the challenges of navigating LA's pay-to-play culture, while applauding the steadfast support for independent artists found within London's authentic radio landscape. Our conversation ventures beyond the UK and US, uncovering the rich musical tapestry of Italy and Germany. With a five-year sojourn in Naples under her belt, Dalila paints a vivid picture of Italy's deep-rooted opera traditions and its embrace of American music. We contrast this with Germany's efficient work ethic and structured lifestyle, offering a philosophical reflection on cultural priorities and highlighting the unique beauty and leisurely allure of Italy as an ideal retirement haven. In a fascinating twist, we explore the marriage of music and quantum physics. Dalila shares her academic journey from SAE to the University of Cambridge, where she embraced the scientific intricacies of sound. Her insights into frequencies and vibrations, inspired by Tesla, reveal a shift in her perception of ego and success, emphasizing soulful experiences over material gains. Her serendipitous stint at Abbey Road Studios, playing alongside Coldplay, illustrates the magic of being in the right place at the right time, propelling her into a successful career as a session musician and sound engineer. Join us as we uncover these harmonious intersections of music, science, and personal growth.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comDalila Mya: https://dalilamya.com/ Support the show
On a winter's night in 1951, shortly after Evensong, the interior of St Paul's Cathedral echoed with gunfire. This was no act of violence but a scientific demonstration of new techniques in acoustic measurement. It aimed to address a surprising question: could a building be a musical instrument? Pistols in St Paul's: Science, Music, and Architecture in the Twentieth Century (Manchester University Press, 2024) by Dr. Fiona Smyth tells the fascinating story of the scientists, architects and musicians who set out to answer this question. Beginning at the turn of the century, their innovative experiments, which took place at sites ranging from Herbert Baker's Assembly Chamber in Delhi to Abbey Road Studios and a disused munitions factory near Perivale, would come to define the field of 'architectural acoustics'. They culminated in 1951 with the opening of the Royal Festival Hall - the first building to be designed for musical tone. Deeply researched and richly illustrated, Pistols in St Paul's brings to light a scientific quest spanning half a century, one that demonstrates the power of international cooperation in the darkest of times. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
