How to Design an IT Roadmap for Ecommerce: Tips and Tricks

Ashley Speaks. You Learn.

It's no secret that ecommerce is booming, with increasingly more people shopping online for everything from clothes to electronics. If you want your ecommerce business to have the best chance of success,it's well worth having a solid IT roadmap in place. Designing an IT roadmap for your ecommerce business might sound like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. In this blog post, we will give you tips and tricks on how to design a roadmap that meets the specific needs of your business. We'll also discuss some common pitfalls to avoid when creating your IT roadmap. So whether you're just starting out or you've been in business for a while, keep reading for plenty of helpful advice. Designing an IT roadmap for ecommerce One of the most crucial factors in launching and running a successful ecommerce business is having a robust and well-designed IT infrastructure. In other words, your website needs to be fast, reliable, and secure. In order to achieve this, you need to have a clear IT roadmap that outlines all the changes and upgrades you need to make to your website on a regular basis. You can map it yourself, or ask for professional assistance – companies like EC-MSP can help you plan the whole process. Below are our tips and tricks on how to design an IT roadmap for ecommerce that will help keep your website up and running smoothly. #1 Define your goals What do you want to achieve with your ecommerce website, and what are your top priorities? Once you have a clear understanding of your goals, you can start planning the steps you need to take in order to achieve them. Your goals should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. That's why an aim such as “improve website speed” is too vague, and a better goal would be something like “decrease website load time by 50% within the next six months”. By setting SMART goals, you can track your progress and adjust your IT roadmap accordingly down the line. To help define them, consider your main objectives, timeline, budget, and risks or challenges while brainstorming. #2 Analyze your current infrastructure This process includes taking a close look at your website's hosting plan, domain name, shopping cart software, and payment gateway, etc. Once you have a good understanding of what you have in place currently, you can start planning for any necessary upgrades or changes. For example, if your checkout process is outdated, it might be time to switch to a newer and more user-friendly platform that offers features like one-click purchasing. Or, if your website is running slowly, you might need to invest in a more powerful hosting plan or consider using a content delivery network (CDN). #3 Determine your upgrade paths Once you know where changes need to be made, figure out the sequence of steps you need to take in order to implement them. This will help you create a timeline for your IT roadmap and ensure that all the upgrades are made in a logical order. Let's say your goal is to improve website speed, then one of the steps in your upgrade path may be to switch to a faster web hosting plan. Whereas if your goal is to increase online sales, then a sensible change would be to add a live chat feature to your website so that potential customers can get their questions answered in real-time. By outlining all the changes and upgrades you need on a regular basis, you can create an IT roadmap that's tailored to the specific needs of your ecommerce business. #4 Create a schedule for changes While determining your upgrade path, also use this time to schedule when to make any modifications to your current infrastructure so that everything continues running smoothly. Doing so will save you time and energy in the long run because you won't have to scramble to make last-minute changes, and you can then also allow some buffer time in your schedule in case any unforeseen delays or issues arise. For example, if you're planning on upgrading your web hosting plan then do it...

He is one of the Admins of Sublimation and more a Facebook group of over 40,000 members. Todd also recently started the Fat Dad Wholesale Business Basics Facebook group aimed at helping those micro-businesses make the leap to the next level.  Aaron: So start us out with the planning phase for you. What is important to have figured out in your head before diving into setting up an ecommerce store?  Todd: What do you want the store to do for you? What kind of results do you want? Do you want leads, do you want sales, or do you just want a place where people can find you.  Terry: Where do you spend the most time and what section of the ecommerce site is the most important to you? Todd: in the mock up stage. Pics sell so make sure you use great pics.  Aaron: You do a lot with ecwid and I believe are even working on some specific training for that platform. What lead you to pick that over lets say a Shopify or BigCommerce? Todd: 3 things lead me to Ecwid, the first being its free. There are so many paid choices out there it's hard to know what's going to work for you and if it's worth it. 2, the ease of set up, I can have a simple store up and running within a half hour from sign up to first sale. 3. You aren't tied to one platform. Ecwid can be tied to many different sites.  Terry: You've talked about images and mock-ups. Do you have any other tips for those on the site?  Todd: Every major supplier has their images on their websites, use those to make your mockups look as realistic as possible.  Aaron: Let's talk about getting people to the site. What are some suggestions to drive traffic to your new store? Todd: Post post post and post some more. Spread the word everywhere. Post the link in your emails, blog posts, Instagram post, Twitter, everywhere!  Terry: What are some other uses for having an ecommerce store outside of just selling your products online? What are some other markets? (For Todd - Examples might be Team Stores, Merch for YouTubers etc.) Todd: At any one time we have at least 5 stores going that include team apparel, fundraisers, benefits, and corporate apparel.  Aaron: If you could only give someone one tip, what would the #1 Tip you would give people setting up an eCommerce Site? #11: eCommerce Tips for Christmas Readiness

The eCommerce Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2019 41:15

Welcome my fellow eCommerce Entrepreneurs! My name is Matt Edmundson and this show is for those of us Kurious About eCommerce and want to know how to get better at digital business.   Coming up in today's show we are talking Christmas and what your business can be doing to plan ahead and capitalize on those Christmas sales.   Eggnog and Christmas lights might be the farthest thing from your mind right now but to experience success this year you need to start thinking about how your eCommerce business is going to drive those sales and finish strong in the final quarter.   Here's 10 eCommerce tips for Christmas Readiness: 1. Plan Ahead It's never too early to start thinking and planning your sales strategy for the Christmas period. Be deliberate in your planning and create a promotional calendar in which you write down how and when you will reach your sales goals. The earlier you begin to market the more successful your sales will be.  2. Provide Gift Wrapping Services This might sound obvious but if your site sells gift-able products then also offer a gift wrapping service. Make your site a one stop shop for your customers. Not only would this be a great customer service, it will also add a few pounds to your profit margin. Yes, you can charge for this service but don't go crazy.  3. Clarify Shipping and Delivery Be very clear  with dates and time frames for shipping and delivery of all your products. Give your customers the last posting dates for Christmas for both national and international deliveries. Talk to your shipping company to get this information and then tell your customers so that they aren't disappointed.  4. Prevent Returns Use imagery, videos and detailed product descriptions so that customers know exactly what they are buying and have no surprises when they open their packages. If you're selling accessories and clothing videos are really helpful because people need to see the product on people. 5. Customer Service Your customers should always receive the best and most hassle free service at all times. This shouldn't change over the Christmas period. In fact, step it up a notch. Over Christmas customers seem more hurried and expect speedy and efficient service. Let them know exactly how and when they can reach you over the Christmas period and go the extra mile wherever you can. 6. Offers and Discounts People start to get into the buying frenzy in October and sales start to go up. Just because people are in the buying mood it doesn't mean you have to discount your products. But what I do recommend is that you begin to highlight products and create awesome offers and discounts. If you've got people who are in the buying mood, they'll more than likely take you up on your offers and discounts. 7. Be Mobile-Ready A lot of people will be shopping on their phones so make sure you take the time to optimise the mobile navigation on your site. Pay special attention to your checkout process on your mobile-site, making it user friendly and streamlined. Avoid abandoned carts wherever possible.  8. Vouchers Vouchers can be a critical part of your Christmas sales strategy. If your customers have joined the shopping frenzy later in the game and have missed shipping dates, they have the option of buying gift vouchers instead. Vouchers are also a great way to create customer engagement in the holiday slump between Christmas and New Year and or the January/ February blues.  9. Do Something for Charity Christmas is about charity as much as it is about anything else. Invite your customers to donate to a charity of your choice and or offer to match donations. Last year Jersey Beauty Company invited their customers to donate to a very specific event that Imagine If were running. Jersey's target was £2000 but through very generous customers ended up raising £2500 to help feed 300 lonely, elderly and less fortunate people on Christmas day. As a team, we got to be a part of that huge endeavor and it felt good! 10. Make it Fun Christmas can so easily become stressful but it's Christ's birthday and it's a time of giving so it has to be fun!  A few years ago Jersey created a Christmas Carpool video that was a lot of fun to make. We challenge you to throw some fun into your Christmas strategy and include your customers in the festive spirit too. Our advice, get organised and use these 10 eCommerce tips for creating your Christmas sales strategy. You'll be glad you did!  _____________________________________________________________________ Sadaf checks in with Jersey Beauty Company's Marketing Manager, Jen Oliver, to talk about Jersey's plans for Christmas.  In preparation to go live in October, Jersey Beauty Company (JBC) start to plan their Christmas sales in September of each year. They take into account factors such as landing pages, assets, content, promotions, packaging and shipping dates.  What JBC has done to drive sales over Christmas in the past:  Run offers mainly through October and November 12 days of Christmas from 19th November - these included 3 for 2 offers, vouchers, freebies, competitions etc Run gift vouchers from October right up until Christmas Offer gift wrapping service Upgrade shipping to free 24 hour delivery Hessian Santa sacks for those who spent over a certain amount, Sacks were made up on free samples and chocolates Extra touches - festive spirit What JBC plans to do this Christmas and Boxing day: Jersey Christmas boxes. These will be similar to the current Jersey beauty box which is made up of different popular brands of products. These can be used as a gift for a loved one These lovely gift boxes will have a Christmas spin on them. Gift wrapping service Hessian Santa sacks with samples. Eco-boxes for the eco-conscious. These will be made up of products such as shampoo bars and bamboo toothbrushes.  Keeping it simple on Boxing Day with money off vouchers. We've got a mini bonus episode for you on getting your store ready for the holidays! The holidays are a stressful time. Your in-laws fly in for a long visit, the weather is lousy, you spend more than you anticipated on gifts, and you can feel yourself coming down with a cold. For 72 hours or more, your life turns into a bad sitcom. Oh, and if you're reading, you're probably also a retailer. On top of the personal drama, you're facing a single day that may make or break your entire fiscal year: Black Friday. That's actually why it's called Black Friday. It's the day that a retailer's books go from red (operating at a loss) to black (operating at a profit). With the holidays around the corner, let's talk about how we can make the most out of the holidays with the highest degree of success – and the lowest degree of stress. So tackling a full-site redesign in October is probably out of the question. While it might work, it's too risky. Instead of gearing up for a huge project, let's focus on some quick wins that you can implement to prep now to prep your store before Black Friday and the holidays.
