Sam Cooper's investigation reveals Canadian officials' ties to Chinese (CCP) election interference in 2019 and 2021, alongside Vancouver's role as a hub for CCP-led money laundering and espionage – and vast amounts of fentanyl entering the USA. Detailed in his book Wilful Blindness (available at https://amzn.to/4ecCeeU), Cooper uncovers a sophisticated operation by China's United Front Work Department, triads, and the Big Circle Boys, allegedly laundering fentanyl drug money through Vancouver casinos like Parq and River Rocks since 1986. He says this fueled Vancouver's housing market bubble and the opioid epidemic, destabilizing Western societies. Cooper alleges open collaboration between the Chinese Communist Party and Canadian officials, including the Prime Minister and MPs, to influence the 2019 and 2021 elections. Sam Cooper is an investigative journalist and founder of The Bureau. His bestselling book, Wilful Blindness, exposed election interference. Awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, Iran's nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile development pose an existential threat to Israel and American civilization, which cannot be ignored. Israel, possibly with U.S. assistance, will take military action to neutralize this threat, as Iran will not go away on its own. Iran's actions, including attacks via proxies and American casualties, demand a decisive military response, which is self-defense rather than nation-building. These radical Democrats, fifth-columnists, and isolationists lack any strategy and moral clarity. Also, the people of Israel are never discussed by the media. They face severe challenges every day, especially in Tel Aviv, where ballistic missiles from Iran target hospitals and public areas, forcing families into bomb shelters. They are in constant fear with a disrupted quality of life. Media outlets ignore these struggles and ignore the regime's history of killing and maiming American soldiers. Later, Zuhdi Jasser calls in and addresses the mindset of the isolationists and fifth columnists who deliberately ignore the existential threat posed by Iran's theocratic regime and its proxies like Hezbollah and the Houthis. He emphasizes that these groups are driven by a radical theology that glorifies suicide bombing, chaos, and the targeting of non-combatants, with the ultimate goal of triggering an apocalyptic scenario tied to the return of the 12th Imam. Jasser asserts that Iran's uranium enrichment is clearly aimed at developing nuclear weapons, not peaceful purposes, and warns that the regime would use such weapons, likening its leadership to a cult willing to commit national fratricide. Finally, Sayyid Qutb's book Milestones, promotes pure Islam and strict shariah, rejecting Western values and most modern Muslims as ignorant (jahiliyyah). Groups like CAIR, ISNA, ICNA, MSA, and MPAC dismiss devout Muslims who oppose their views. Qutb's ideas fuel sectarian violence and terrorism by groups like Hamas and al-Qaida, and states like Iran, which pursues nuclear weapons through deception (taqiyya). Western appeasement fails to counter this clash with democratic values. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Israel and its western allies are crying and rending their garments about an Israeli hospital that was damaged in an Iranian missile strike. Western media outlets like the BBC and New York Times have suddenly remembered how to write headlines which assign blame to the attacker after deciding that hospitals getting bombed is a newsworthy event again. The Iranian attack didn't even kill anybody, and the damage to the hospital was reportedly the result of a shockwave from a strike on a nearby Israeli military facility. That's right: the Israeli military was using the hospital for human shields. As always, every accusation is a confession. Israel, as we all know, bombs hospitals constantly. Israel bombed an Iranian hospital just the other day to almost no coverage from the western press. Israel has attacked healthcare workers and healthcare facilities in Gaza around 700 times according to the World Health Organisation, and the IDF has repeatedly been documented entering the hospitals it attacks to destroy individual pieces of medical equipment. Israel, unlike Iran, is deliberately targeting healthcare facilities to make Gaza unlivable. Israeli defense minister Israel Katz is now saying that because of the hospital strike, Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei "cannot continue to exist." Knowing what we know about Israel's track record, saying that people who bomb hospitals should not be allowed to exist can only be interpreted as an extremely antisemitic statement. Send us a textThe infamous Belle Starr—a pistol-packing outlaw queen of the Wild West or a misunderstood historical figure whose legend overshadows reality? This fascinating exploration of Myra Maybel Shirley Starr reveals the stark contrast between the woman herself and the sensationalized "Bandit Queen" who captured America's imagination.Born in 1848 Missouri to a prosperous family, young May Shirley straddled two worlds—receiving a refined classical education at Carthage Female Academy while simultaneously developing remarkable riding and shooting skills under her beloved brother Bud's guidance. This duality would define her life, creating a woman comfortable in multiple spheres and unwilling to conform to 19th-century expectations of femininity. The Civil War shattered the Shirleys' comfortable existence. Missouri's brutal guerrilla conflict exposed May to violence, betrayal, and a moral code that existed outside conventional law. When her idolized brother Bud was killed by Union soldiers in 1864 and their hometown of Carthage burned, the family fled to Texas, joining countless displaced Southerners seeking new beginnings. This dramatic downward mobility—from affluence to a primitive dugout dwelling in lawless Scyene, Texas—became the crucible that transformed an educated young woman into a figure who would associate with notorious outlaws.Through meticulous historical research, we unravel how the seeds of the Belle Starr legend were planted in this tumultuous period of American history. The podcast examines how personal tragedy, war trauma, and frontier justice shaped not just Belle's trajectory but the wider cultural fascination with outlaws who defied authority in the post-Civil War era. What emerges is a captivating portrait of resilience, reinvention, and the complex dynamics between historical truth and American mythmaking.Follow our four-part series on Belle Starr and other remarkable women who shaped Western narratives. The message of Christ's crucifixion, considered foolish by many, became the foundation of Western civilization and continues to offer profound meaning and hope. The Christian ethic is revolutionary in its values of equality, compassion, and self-sacrifice and calls us to live out the implications of the cross daily, showing Christ's love to the marginalized in our society and being open to God's transformative power in our own spiritual journeys.
This Day in Legal History: Atkins v. VirginiaOn June 20, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a landmark ruling in Atkins v. Virginia, holding that the execution of individuals with intellectual disabilities violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. The case centered on Daryl Renard Atkins, who was convicted of abduction, armed robbery, and capital murder in Virginia. During the penalty phase of his trial, defense attorneys presented evidence that Atkins had an IQ of 59 and functioned at the level of a child. Despite this, he was sentenced to death. In a 6-3 decision, the Court reversed its earlier stance from Penry v. Lynaugh (1989), which had allowed such executions. Justice John Paul Stevens, writing for the majority, emphasized the "evolving standards of decency" in American society, noting that a growing number of states had barred the death penalty for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The Court recognized that such defendants are at a heightened risk of wrongful execution due to difficulties in assisting their own defense and the possibility of false confessions. The decision did not establish a national standard for determining intellectual disability, leaving that to the states, but it set a constitutional floor by barring executions in these cases outright. Atkins significantly reshaped the legal landscape of capital punishment, prompting states to revise death penalty statutes and sentencing procedures. The ruling reinforced the importance of individualized sentencing and safeguarded vulnerable populations from the most severe penalties. It also underscored the role of psychological and scientific evidence in constitutional interpretation. While not without criticism, Atkins remains a cornerstone of Eighth Amendment jurisprudence and a key moment in the Court's ongoing reevaluation of capital punishment.Technology giants Apple and Meta are currently facing possible penalties under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), but the European Commission has decided not to immediately fine them—even if they don't fully comply by the deadline next week.In April, both companies were fined—€500 million for Apple and €200 million for Meta—and given 60 days (ending 26 June) to align their practices with DMA requirements. Apple was penalized for preventing app developers from directing users to alternatives outside its platform, infringing DMA fairness rules. Meta was fined for its “pay or consent” system, which required users to either pay for an ad-free experience or agree to extensive personal data use; the Commission saw this as limiting user choice.Since November 2024, Meta has offered a new, lower-data personalized advertising model, which remains under Commission review. The current situation involves ongoing dialogue: any future fines will depend on the outcome of that review and will be imposed only after detailed assessments, rather than automatically once the deadline passed. These April fines were deliberately modest—reflecting the short duration of non-compliance and signaling the EU's priority on achieving compliance over punishment, marking a softer approach compared to previous, harsher antitrust actions. The situation also plays into broader economic tensions: EU leaders have threatened digital advertising taxes in response to recent US tariffs, while a US trade report criticized EU digital regulation as a trade barrier.Tech giants Apple and Meta to escape sanctions for failing to meet EU digital rules | EuronewsA U.S. appeals court has temporarily allowed Donald Trump to retain control over California's National Guard, despite a legal challenge from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The decision from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals pauses an earlier ruling by Judge Charles Breyer, who found Trump had unlawfully federalized the Guard without meeting statutory requirements or adequately coordinating with Newsom. The court stated Trump likely acted within his authority and that even if coordination with the governor was insufficient, Newsom lacked the power to override a presidential order. Still, the court left open the possibility of further challenges under laws barring federal troops from engaging in domestic law enforcement. Newsom plans to pursue his challenge, arguing Trump is misusing military force against civilians. The case stems from Trump's deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles earlier in June to suppress protests tied to his immigration policies—actions Newsom said infringed on state sovereignty and legal limits on military involvement in civilian matters. The Trump administration argued troops are protecting federal property, not performing law enforcement.During a hearing, the appellate judges examined whether courts can assess a president's decision to federalize troops under a law allowing such moves only during invasion, rebellion, or when civilian enforcement fails. The court found the last condition may have applied, given protest-related violence. However, it rejected the Justice Department's claim that such presidential decisions are beyond judicial review. The Insurrection Act and related federalization authority are central to this case. The Act allows a president to take control of a state's National Guard in limited situations—such as rebellion or when laws can't be enforced by normal means. This case illustrates both the expansive view of executive power and the judiciary's role in checking it, even amid claims of national emergency.US court lets Trump keep control of California National Guard for nowPresident Trump has once again extended the deadline for TikTok to be sold to a U.S. owner, granting a third 90-day reprieve through an executive order despite lacking a clear legal basis for the extensions. The move allows TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. while negotiations persist to transfer ownership from China-based ByteDance to an American entity. The previous extension fell through when China withdrew from talks following Trump's new tariffs. This delay has not yet faced a court challenge, even though the original ban—passed by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court—briefly took effect in January. Trump's personal popularity on the platform, where he has more than 15 million followers, adds a political twist to the ongoing negotiations. TikTok praised the decision and emphasized its importance to 170 million users and 7.5 million U.S. businesses.Despite concerns from national security officials and lawmakers like Senator Mark Warner, who accuse the administration of ignoring known risks, the repeated extensions suggest a softening of resolve. Analysts describe the situation as a recurring political maneuver with no clear endpoint—likening it to the endless debates over the debt ceiling.Meanwhile, TikTok continues to roll out new features and expand its services, including AI tools debuted in Cannes, signaling confidence in its long-term U.S. presence. Tech giants Apple, Google, and Oracle remain engaged with TikTok, reassured that the administration won't penalize them under current law.Public opinion has shifted, with fewer Americans now supporting a ban compared to 2023. Concerns remain over data privacy, but many citizens are unsure or opposed to banning the app outright.Trump extends TikTok ban deadline for a third time, without clear legal basisThis week's closing theme is by Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most influential composers in Western music history, composed the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, in 1741. Originally written for harpsichord, the work consists of an aria followed by 30 variations, returning to the aria at the end in a da capo structure. It was likely commissioned by Count Hermann Karl von Keyserlingk, a Russian diplomat suffering from insomnia, who wanted music to soothe his sleepless nights—though this origin story is debated. The aria, which opens and closes the piece, is a gentle, sarabande-like melody in G major. Unlike other variation sets built on melodies, Bach bases the Goldberg Variations on the aria's bass line and harmonic structure. This allows for extraordinary variety in texture, form, and mood across the variations, while keeping a consistent foundation. The aria itself is simple and elegant, consisting of two balanced halves, each repeated. Its serene tone contrasts with the technical brilliance and contrapuntal complexity found in many of the following variations. Yet, the aria's emotional restraint and clarity set the tone for the entire cycle.Over the centuries, the Goldberg Variations have come to be seen as a pinnacle of keyboard composition. The aria, both opening and closing the work, serves as a kind of spiritual bookend—calm, contemplative, and timeless. Performers often approach it with reverence, as a moment of stillness and symmetry amid musical adventure.Without further ado, Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, BMV 988 – the aria. Enjoy! The Middle East is on fire. Again. What began as Israel's retaliation against Hamas after the October 7 attacks has now exploded into a multi-front conflict involving Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran. In this episode of In Our Defence, veteran journalist and national security expert Sandeep Unnithan joins host Dev Goswami to break down how the war escalated so dramatical, and what it means for the region and the world. The two look at Iran's underestimated military, its dual-army structure, and the massive blow dealt to its leadership in just the first week of fighting. Why does Israel seem so unbending, even at the cost of global condemnation and regional chaos? And could any of this be happening without backing from the US? Dev and Sandeep also explore the philosophical irony behind Western nations - especially the US - dictating nuclear rules to countries like Iran, even as they maintain massive arsenals themselves. Is this another chapter in global double standards? And finally, the two unpack a surprising development: Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir's meeting with Donald Trump during his US visit. Could this signal a renewed American effort to position Pakistan as a behind-the-scenes player in the Israel-Iran war? Produced by Garvit Srivastava Sound mixed by Rohan Bharti

A century ago, Oswald Spengler warned that Western civilization was entering its final phase—not from war or catastrophe, but from cultural exhaustion. In The Decline of the West, he argued that every great society passes through organic stages of growth and decay—and the West, he claimed, had already entered winter. In this episode of Context, we revisit Spengler's audacious and unsettling vision. We explore the patterns he identified—technocracy, Caesarism, the erosion of civic virtue—and ask whether Spengler's predictions still hold up. Are we watching a great civilization fade… or transform? Topics include: • Spengler's life, method, and seasonal model of civilization • Parallels between ancient Rome and the modern West • Technological achievement vs. cultural vitality • Why memory and myth matter for renewal • The possibility of rebirth—and what spring might require If you value this show, please take a moment to give it a five-star rating. This week, we travel back to the Iberian Peninsula in the 11th Century CE and begin our discussion about one of the most formative events in the Western European historical tradition: The Reconquista. Traditionally, at least to Western historians, this has been a tale of the centuries long triumph of Christianity, Civilization, and Enlightened European Values over the despotic domination of the conquering Muslim hordes. This week we will introduce perhaps the most famous culture hero to emerge from this tumultuous era, El Cid, and explore the world into which he was born. Former Israeli government spokesman, Eylon Levy joins The Winston Marshall Show to break down the recent wave of attacks between Israel and Iran—and what they signal for the future of the Middle East.Levy details how the Islamic Republic's fingerprints are all over the region's escalating chaos: from Hamas's massacre on October 7th, to missile strikes launched from Syria and Iraq, to Hezbollah's mounting aggression in the north. He warns that Iran's proxy war is entering a new phase. We discuss wavering support, the failure of Western deterrence, and why the global community's obsession with “proportionality” is empowering the very forces threatening regional—and global—stability. All this—Iranian escalation, proxy terror, Western weakness, and the gathering storm on Israel's borders…-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------0:00 Introduction3:20 What's happening 7:15 The Problem With Western Media10:48 What the Left Gets Wrong About Israel14:32 The ‘Decolonization' Narrative19:40 Is Israel Winning the Media War?25:10 The Iranian Threat & Israel's Dilemma29:30 The Disinformation Playbook34:45 The Global Rise of Antisemitism38:00 Why Israel Is Fighting for the West41:45 TikTok Genocide Deniers & Online Hate45:30 The Limits of International Law49:00 What Happens After Hamas?52:40 Eylon's Message to the World Hosted on Acast. OK. Tonight I really. Must sleep.I spoke last night with Beni Sabti, an Iranian-born expert on security, culture and politics of his native country. BenI has been going night and day since Friday morning, being one of the most highly regarded Iran experts in the world. So I was thrilled to finally have some time to speak with him Wednesday night. We both signed off, exhausted, around midnight. Five minutes later the first alarms went off in central Israel, where he lives. This morning, multiple targets were hit by Iranian missiles, including Be'er Sheba's Soroka Hospital. We begin with a brief report on that, but this podcast is really devoted to Beni's insights about the psychology of Iranian leadership. Western analysts tend to extol the savvy Iranian negotiation strategy, but Beni is far less reverential. He thinks that the leaders of Iran have made a hash of nuclear negotiations. As well, the overwhelming majority of the population loathes this regime and is desperate for change. It's a fascinating exploration of a country and culture under siege and how they might react in the coming days. You may want to watch this one on YouTube - there are some interesting visuals throughout but especially for the first five minutes or so. State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Podcast NotesBeni Sabti is an Iran expert at the INSS. Sabti was born in Iran in 1972 and raised primarily under the Islamic Revolution regime. After escaping Iran to Israel in 1987, he served in the IDF, primarily as a researcher, mostly in projects relating to Iranian culture and influence on cognition, decision-making, and media. One of the flagship projects he led was the establishment of the IDF Spokesperson's platforms in Persian, designed to address the Iranian people directly.Sabti holds an M.A in political science and public communications from Bar Ilan University, and was a research fellow at JISS in Jerusalem. Sabti gives lectures about many issues related to Iran and is a commentator on Iran for media outlets in Israel and abroad. He was also one of the cultural advisors to the series “Tehran,” broadcast on Apple TV and Israel's Channel 11. This is a public episode. There's a secret weapon in the campaign to end the mortal threat the Iranian regime poses to Israel, America and Western civilization: namely, the people of Iran. After all, the mullahs' Sharia-supremacist totalitarian misrule has impoverished, isolated and murdered them for over four decades. In addition, the ruling ayatollahs believe they must bring back their messiah by initiating the Apocalypse, which would kill untold millions of Iranians, among others. If empowered to liberate themselves, Iran's people can do more to end the regime's doomsday nuclear weapons program than any external power. So, we need to encourage and enable them to rise up. Understandably, they'll only take the immense risks of doing so if convinced Western deal-making with the regime won't sell them out again. That means no further negotiations with the mullahs for any purpose other than their unconditional surrender. This is Frank Gaffney.

The show opens with me wondering where all of the headlines are regarding Iran intentionally targeting and hitting a hospital in Israel. I remember when the propaganda spread by Hamas suggested an Israeli missile hit a hospital in Gaza and the whole of Western media lost their collective minds repeating the lie. Speaking of hospitals, I spend time reminding you of a story of a whistleblower who helped to expose radical trans surgeries taking place at Texas Children's Hospital. This rolls into more discussion over the SCOTUS decision to protect children and how that decision relates to the Cass Review that came out in April of 2024. Suddenly, all the bought-and-paid-for protesters are holding signs in support of Iran. It's amazing what millions of dollars can do when renting a mob full of useful idiots. Miranda Devine weighs-in on more FBI emails being released showing how Joe Biden's DOJ was obsessed with finding new ways to pile on charges on Donald Trump. Remember how I keep telling you the Democrat plan was always to flood the country with illegals and then convert them to citizens? Well, Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) just came out and made that statement as clear as day. Dr. Mehmet Oz sat with CNN's Jake Tapper to discuss the needed changes in Medicaid. It's amazing how the Left still doesn't understand how the Trump administration is trying to save the program by removing the fraudsters and the abusers. Dr. Theodore Wold testified before Congress about the use of the auto-pen. He reveals serious concerns about the Constitutional crisis the Biden staffers created. Finally, AG Pam Bondi is suing Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) for allowing illegals to pay less for college tuition, once again putting Americans last. And, the US Navy has met their recruitment goals 3 months ahead of the end of the fiscal year. Please take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media. We're celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jaws by looking back at Spielberg's genre-defining original and its progressively wilder sequels. A quartet of films that not only redefined summer horror but also played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary fears of the ocean, the Jaws franchise embraced genre hybridity, influenced public perception of sharks, and contributed to the rise of the summer blockbuster. But are there other reasons that explain the original film's enduring cultural relevance? We're diving in today with spoilers, so stay tuned!ReferencesCaputi, Jane E. "Jaws as Patriarchal Myth." The Libyan Coast Guard is doing the European Union's dirty work, capturing migrants as they attempt to cross the Mediterranean into Europe and throwing them in secret prisons. There, they are extorted, abused and sometimes killed. An investigation into the death of Aliou Candé, a young farmer and father from Gineau-Bisseau, puts the Outlaw Ocean team in the cross-hairs of Libya's violent and repressive regime. In this stunning three-part series, we take you inside the walls of one of the most dangerous prisons, in a lawless regime where the world's forgotten migrants languish. Ep. 3 highlights:Host Ian Urbina is detained, beaten and brought to a secret prison. He believes he is going to die. And still, he knows this is only “a sliver of what the migrants we are covering go through.”Urbina learns his team is being held in the same facility. They make proof-of-life videos as their respective governments intervene to get them out. Ian reflects on Western privilege and the lottery of birth. He, unlike Aliou, gets to go home. He also gets to report what he saw: a war on migration. A war with an army, a navy, and an air force. A war likely to spread as more poor, desperate migrants risk it all to reach safer shores.
There is war in the middle east again! Today we talk about the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Iran, with speculation that the U.S. may be involved indirectly. Media narratives are particularly frustrating, with uncertainty and conflicting reports make it difficult to know what's truly happening. This definitely parallels the financial markets, particularly with how differing narratives shape reactions during times of volatility with many often making moves on perception rather than confirmed facts. The war could potentially impact on oil prices and inflation among other global economic repercussions despite the U.S. being more energy independent. We discuss... War has reignited in the Middle East, with Israel attacking Iran and missiles flying in both directions. There's confusion about U.S. involvement, with implications that support for Israel exists behind the scenes. The biggest economic concern is the potential for rising oil prices and inflation due to conflict. Oil futures spiked shortly after the attack, raising suspicions of insider trading among politicians. The discussion draws parallels between the chaos of war and financial markets—both are driven by incomplete, misleading, or rapidly evolving information. The role of algorithms and the lack of liquidity are blamed for severe price swings during market disruptions. Humans feel compelled to understand market movements even when there may be no clear explanation. Market price is the most honest signal, but its drivers are often unknowable or misleading. The U.S. is stepping back from global policing, reinforcing an “America First” geopolitical posture. China is rapidly overtaking Western industries like autos, robotics, and nuclear energy. Global money printing continues to fuel equity markets despite mixed economic signals. Investment strategy should focus on capital flows, not moral preferences or outdated macro narratives. ESG investing appeals to emotions, but maximizing returns and funding good later may be more effective. Google quietly changed its algorithm to penalize independent contractors on major media platforms. Search is undergoing a dramatic transformation due to AI, fundamentally changing how users and companies interact with information. Google's ad business is threatened as users shift from browsing search results to receiving direct AI-generated answers. New technologies upend existing industries, especially if introduced abruptly without time to adapt. The global AI race—especially against China—is accelerating progress beyond what's safe or manageable. AI will likely displace workers not all at once, but gradually as its capabilities expand and efficiencies are realized. AI thinks differently than humans—it doesn't require order or structure to understand inputs. Learning how to think and work with AI is becoming a crucial new skill set. After our emergency episode on Monday about the extraordinary events currently taking place in Iran and Israel, we don't want to leave Conflicted listeners without their Thomas and Aimen fix on a Wednesday, so this week we're bringing you an old episode of Conflicted from Season 3, which explains how the modern state of Iran came into being - the Iranian Revolution of 1979... Find the episode description is below: It's the Iranian Revolution of 1979 - the great showdown! The watershed moment when the tensions which between reform and reaction, modernism and tradition erupted into sweeping rejection of the Western model of modernity and its replacement with something apocalyptic, something both ancient and strikingly new: a Shi'a Islamic Republic. 1979 was out with the Shah, in with the Ayatollah; and the consequences have been without parallel—for the Middle East, and the world.
