In this episode, host Janet Michael sits down with Kary Haun at Nancy's Coffee Bar to dive into the excitement of upcoming events in Shenandoah County throughout August. They kick off the conversation discussing the popular Route 11 Yard Crawl, set to occur on August 10th, where over 43 miles of yard sales stretch from Stephens City to New Market. Janet and Carrie share details on what to expect, tips for navigating traffic, and the hidden treasures that can be found, emphasizing how community members, including local nonprofits, participate in this massive event. The discussion then transitions to the Shenandoah County Fair, happening at the end of August. Kary highlights key events like the Miss Shenandoah County Fair Scholarship Pageant, demolition derbies, and various music concerts featuring artists like Zach Williams, Cooper Alan, and Priscilla Block. There's also a nod to the traditional county fair experiences with barnyard animals, exhibits, and classic fair food favorites like chili cheese dogs and funnel cakes. Listeners also get insights into the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival, with performances from bands such as the Oak Ridge Boys, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and Eileen Ivers lined up. Kary remarks on the magical atmosphere of the festival held at Orkney Springs, where attendees can picnic and enjoy live music in a beautiful natural setting. My wife and I listen to your podcast every time we're in the car. And I listen at work. On St. Patty's Day we usually go to a good Irish bar for some Guinness and shepherd's pie and sometimes Bangers and Mash, depending on when we get there. A few years ago we were lucky enough to go to Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland; a great 10 day vacation. Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. It was a thrill to be there and listen to these amazing musicians. The Dublin Irish Festival is ALWAYS a great time! Thanks again for sharing your musical talent, and creating such a wonderful listening experience! Slainte to you too, Marc!" William Fisher emailed: "Usually I'm working on the computer listening to your podcast but I download to a portable player so I can listen in the car or whenever... For St Padraig's Day, The Irish social group I belong to is part of a day - long celebration in William's Park, St Petersburg FL. with music, food and games : - )" Rebekah Hedstrom replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Usually driving while listening. We are going to have a quiet St Paddy's day this year. Corned beef and staying at home. :0)" Brian McReynolds sent you a message on Patreon: "Just got the shirt I ordered and the bonus shirt. Thank you. I love them both. I think I will wear the new one tomorrow and the 2016 shirt Friday. Oh, and an early happy birthday to you.

Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Antje Wilke wrote from Germany last year: "this is now the test of whether you really answer personally (even to a weird German who is nothing but an advanced English learner who stumbled across and fell in love with the Irish language and music while searching for English listening fodder on the internet). In the middle of 2019, I got an Irish neighbor who didn't speak a single word of German and asked me for assistance all the time. Luckily, I came across the right online English teacher on Instagram who brought me out of my shell... I soon realized that I love the English from the south of Ireland the most. It was only a matter of time that I also got in touch with Irish culture and tradition (including the language and music). I even started learning Irish and playing the bodhrán. I'm still a beginner in both (maybe my Irish is already a little better than the drumming, but I only started in November). And since I wanted to find music other than my teacher's to play along with, I googled around. And that's how I stumbled across your podcast. Long story short, I've been fascinated by Celtic music, but even more so since I started learning Irish. I wish one day I could sing some traditional songs in Irish. The Sean Nós singing is so beautiful, too. Wish you a wonderful Christmas wherever you are and keep on making music and all the stuff around it. Nollaig Shona agus slán go fóill!”

But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. When it comes to Celtic music there’s so much to choose from that it can be overwhelming to know where to start if you’re looking for something suitable for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Naturally much of this will depend on your individual taste. Some people prefer a raucous band of musicians on pipes, others love a great vocalist, while still others like nothing more than peaceful harp music. There’s so much variety! Female-led bands or artists are one option that might be appealing for some. Whether you just want to support a female artist, or you love the sound of a Celtic song sung by a lady, there are numerous bands out there that showcase the ample talents of women in the Celtic music arena. Let’s take a closer look at just a few that you might want to check out this holiday… Lissa Schneckenburger grew up with music and has been playing the fiddle since the age of six. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music and graduated with a degree in Contemporary Improvisation, so there is a lot of knowledge behind this lady’s arrangements and playing ability. Listeners looking for something heavy on the fiddle would enjoy exploring her musical offerings, including albums titled simply, “Dance” and “Song”. Heather Dale is a contemporary Celtic music artist that is a singer, as well as an accomplished musician. She plays piano, hammered dulcimer, Irish flutes and whistles, and bodhran drum alongside her band members. Dale highlights original Celtic folk music, but adds an updated twist with the instrumentation. The theme of fantasy runs deep in much of her music, but she also offers an album (My Celtic Heart) that features traditional folk songs. The Gothard Sisters are another interesting Celtic band, and they blend Celtic, folk, classical, world and northwest musical influences. These three sisters play together seamlessly, and offer a lovely selection of contemporary Celtic music that has wide appeal. Having over 10 years of experience playing with one another provides a great foundation for the band, and their songs feature everything from acoustic guitar, to mandolin, to djembe, to octave violin, and more. It seems starting young on the fiddle may well be a recipe for success. Eileen Ivers began her studies at age eight, and went on to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships. If the strings call to your heart, they are front and center in much of her work, and played just beautifully. Her latest album, “Scatter the Light” features some very good original music, but there’s plenty to explore on her other offerings as well. The Selkie Girls Screaming Orphans Lissa Schneckenburger Eileen Ivers Heather Dale Tami Curtis The Gothard Sisters While this is just a small sampling of all the talent that is out there, these Celtic bands should give you a starting point if you’re looking to add to your St. Patrick’s Day selection of excellent music to accompany you this holiday. We hope you’ll continue to join us here where we’re on a mission to bring you the very best and brightest Celtic music artists – male and female – all throughout this coming year! Please subscribe to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast so you don’t miss a thing. Celebrate Celtic culture through music at CelticMusicPodcast.com.

A lot of things happened and got distracted. Normally I listen to your show via podcast when doing graphic and web design work on the computer. It keeps me upbeat and chilled. Noe I look forward to catch up. Virtual hugs to you and other listeners in this crazy time. greetings from the Netherlands." Michael Cornett emailed a photo: "Hi Marc; I just wanted to say thanks for the show; I've been listening for years and now more than ever it's a source of joy for me. If the current times weren't crazy enough, I was laid off from my job last week so I'm not only dealing with avoiding the virus but also trying to find a new job. The music you play has been part of my "keep sane" program. I also want to thank you for promoting music by women and other minorities. As a gay man who's more comfortable at a pub or ceili than a dance club, that means so much to me. I'm looking forward to your queer music special! Attached is a photo of myself, listening while I take a walk outside, getting what exercise I can. Again, thank you." Ginnie Vigansky emailed: "Dear Marc, First, let me say how grateful I am for your podcast and how much I appreciate your passion for Celtic music and your desire to help this wonderful community. I have not had the opportunity to download any special downloads yet, for now I'm just happy to be part of this wonderful community you are building. I hope you will indulge me while I share my history of your podcast with you. I have always been drawn to Celtic music for whatever reason and have always enjoyed finding new Celtic artists. In the early 2000s while at university I discovered a Celtic music show on our local public radio and quickly became a regular listener. I listened for many years and it became part of my Sunday morning tradition. Shortly after meeting a very special man (who eventually became my husband) in 2013 the radio station changed the time slot of the Celtic music show and it was no longer convenient to listen to. My husband, knowing how much this music meant to me, started to look for other ways to continue this Sunday morning tradition and several years ago he discovered your podcast, and we've been listening ever since. I really appreciate the variety of music you play and it has been nice to hear some artists I was familiar with before finding your show; like Heather Dale, Elixir and the Gothard Sisters...and I've so enjoyed learning about so many new artists. After about a six week break from listening I started to listen again and find myself again grateful for your hard work to make this show happen. My husband died unexpectedly at the end of May and listening to your show again while making Sunday breakfast brings back many fond memories of my Sunday mornings with the most remarkable man I've ever known. Thank you for helping me continue this wonderful tradition, although now tinged with some sadness, it is also full of wonderful memories. I've been meaning to subscribe to the podcast for some time and finally did so today. I would like to make my support for the show in honor of my wonderful husband and partner, Paul Vigansky. Thank you so much for all you do. With warmest gratitude, Ginnie L. Vigansky”

I just discovered your Irish and Celtic Music Podcast and I just love it! It has been helping me get through these stressful times, so thank you for that. I don't know how I've only now discovered your podcast -- I must have been living under a rock. The running joke among my friends and family is that I am Irish ... because I am obsessed with Irish history, music and culture. I've also developed an interest in all things Scottish, so still have a lot to learn there. Anyway, long story short ... I always love listening to Celtic music but only knew a few songs and artists. This podcast has introduced me to new songs and artists, hearing that wonderful music and stories in those songs that I've never heard before. Anyway, I hope you and yours are doing well during this crazy time. Please keep on bringing us the music!" Stephen & Kyra Reimann emailed photos: :Hi Marc, My 13-year-old daughter, Kyra (K-ear-rah), and I spent our Saturday on a father/daughter woodworking project. Kyra is an avid volleyball player. So at her request, I tried my hand at building an adjustable volleyball rebound board for her to practice her volleyball drills on. Just so you know I’m not a carpenter by any means and all I had to go on was a two minute YouTube video that didn’t include any blueprints. It was imperative that we find the exact right music to lift our spirits and set this project off on the right foot. Episode 457 was the exact right choice. There was a point during one of the songs where I broke out in dance while Kyra had to hold the wood perfectly still. She criticized me, not for my dancing, but because she wanted to dance instead of holding that piece of lumber perfectly still. We even listened to the episode twice while building our project. It may have taken us four hours to complete, but we had great tunes along the way Enclosed are two pics of us with the finished project. Thank you for being a part of this great father/daughter memory in the making. Go raibh maith agat," Pronunciation: Guh ruh mah a-gut David Tan Creti emailed a photo: "Marc, great to hear Highland Life. I checked my Aberdeen-Angus bull named "Bovis". Perhaps the Podcast made him homesick for the Highlands. But here in Iowa, he has plentiful hay and heifers to look after. His Scotts breeding means he has not horns and a fine coat suited for the Iowa winters. Best Wishes"

Please wash your hands, stay at home if you can, and be safe. So let’s get rolling... CELTIC PODCAST NEWS The past month was pretty devastating for Celtic musicians. Our biggest month of the year was effectively canned. We have no idea when we will be able to perform in front of live audiences again. And even when we are able, will audiences come out? Some of us are better off than others. That’s because we have Patreon pages for our music. Just like for the podcast, fans can support some Celtic bands by making a monthly pledge to their music. Sometimes you get some digital goodies for your generosity too. There are about 20 Celtic musicians and bands with Patreon pages. I compiled a list of Celtic musicians on Patreon. Follow the link for details. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out every week. You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com The band Kinnfolk posted this little online. I asked if I could share it. “Call me cynical, but I've always assumed that the world is moving away from live, local music. Our phones are too distracting; instead of looking out into the world around us, our heads are bowed over our screens, or we're busy trying to snap the perfect photo to be enjoyed later on Instagram. Or even when we are alert and engaged...it's so easy to pull up YouTube and summon a musical performance from any place in the world, any moment in time, any musician we choose. How can a local musician even matter, in a world like this? That's what I thought. Over the past two years, this community has shown me time and time again that local music is not only relevant, but is a profound means of connecting with other human beings. I'm reminded of this every time we see repeat faces in the audience. Every time someone dances. Every time a busy bar goes still. Every time I see tears after a performance of "Danny Boy" or "Kilkelly, Ireland." Every time a child wanders to the stage and watches, fascinated, as we play. I'm reminded that music is not only something we do, but something we give. And so, as always, thank you all. For listening to our music, attending our shows, chatting with us online. Performance is a circle, and our music is meaningful because of these little moments of connection with you.
Premier Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers has released a stunning new album, "Scatter the Light." We spoke with her about the album, and the uplifting messages behind each of the tracks.

I hope you’re doing amazing despite the Coronavirus and the social distancing that’s taken over all of our lives. I know it sucks, but I hope you are safe and healthy. On the bright side, there were a LOT of opportunities to hear Celtic music over the past couple o’weeks despite St Patrick’s Day being effectively closed. And I keep hearing about more musicians going live. So make sure you check the news of your favorite bands. See who’s playing and watch one of their shows. And if you’re able, help them out. Buy some music or merch, send them a tip. Tell them thanks for all of the music they create. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! I said ratings. Looks like I messed up when I said reviews. But that’s still brilliant. Just 17 left. Go give your review. A quick additional note about St Patrick’s Day. I know it sucked that it was effectively shut down. I think we need to make Halfway to St Patrick’s Day as big St Paddy’s Day should’ve been this year. So go talk to your local pub or Celtic organizations. We have just over 5 months to plan. Let’s make it happen on September 17th! Oh! And I want send out a huge thanks to Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. She organized an impromptu St Patrick’s Day virtual festival on Facebook and Instagram. We already donated money to the Savannah Irish Festival to help some of the artists featured on this podcast. We are also sponsoring the Texas Scottish Festival in May. And now in September, we’re also sponsoring Middle Tennessee Highland Games & Celtic Festival. We have donated over $35,000 to Celtic Non-Profits. But I want to stress, that’s not me. She looks at the bigger stories behind traditional Irish music. It’s extremely well-produced and well worth subscribing Erin’s Isle is a short travel podcast. SHARON AND NICK PANGAROSharon and Nick have been together for 46 years and began playing music together early on. During those earlier years, Sharon played guitar and Nick played harmonica jamming together with friends in college dorms and at parties.Nick's Dad played mandolin and he's been influenced by greats such as Tim O'Brien, Chris Thile, Rich DelGrosso, and Sierra Hull just to name a few, so it was natural he pick up the instrument about 20 years ago. He's continued to add more instruments to his repertoire including resonator and octave mandolins, guitar, 5 string and tenor banjos, and occasionally bass. From the time she was five years old through her teen years, Sharon played classical piano. In later years, she enjoyed watching fiddle performers such as Eileen Ivers, Natalie MacMaster and Winifred Horan and was initially drawn to Celtic music. She picked up the fiddle in 2004. Eventually, she found a real interest in the Old Time, Bluegrass and Blues genres and changed her focus. In addition to the fiddle, she plays the dobro, guitar, bodhran, and djembe. They began playing at open mics, coffee houses and jam sessions. In 2009, they formed a group with friends called Deep Hole Road. Later, in 2015, they began performing as part of the group Entangled Strings. They currently perform as Sharon, Nick and Friends, playing as either a duo or trio (and more) having friends occasionally join them. They enjoy playing at music festivals, farmer's markets, coffee houses and open mics, and have begun an educational-centered program for libraries focusing on the chronology of instruments and various styles of music. They have been busy booking gigs for 2020 and will be appearing at the New Boston Farmers' Market on 7/11 and 8/29, the Hampstead Library on 8/3, the Rochester Farmer's Market on 8/11, and the Deerfield Fair on 10/3. You can visit their Facebook page, Sharon, Nick and Friends, to check for updates to the schedule.

Born a flouting believer in Christianity, a young Maewyn Succat was captured by pirates and sold into slavery at a tender age of 16 where he tended to sheep. During that time of captivity, Maewyn strengthened his relationship with God through prayer; eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity. A few years after escaping captivity, young Maewyn, in a vision, was harkened “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us” and walk among them, he did. Roaming the countryside he taught the message of Christianity through his analogical shamrock teachings and his legendary expulsion of ophidian creatures. Shedding the Succat name, he became the first successful evangelist of Christianity; The Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick, and he is once again celebrated by virtue of devotion, tradition, and legend with music, dance, song and a celebratory pint or two. Join Tim Taylor and Mike Shevlin for an extended evening celebrating the first Bishop of Armagh with stories about the life of times of our greatest saint, St. Patrick, with music from Barleyjuice, The Gleasons, The Tossers, Brave Combo, Sharon Shannon with Greg Guy, The High Kings, The Chancey Brothers, Ron Kavana, Girsa, The Great Whiskey Project, The Prodigals, Trian, Katie Grennan, Eileen Ivers, Andy Cooney and the Wolftones. THE MAKEM & SPAIN BROTHERS are song collectors in the spirit of their forefathers preserving old folk songs and introducing a new generation to this rich musical history. The Makem's continue the lineage of one of Irish music's dynasties, begun by their grandmother Sarah Makem and father Tommy Makem, who is now considered an icon. The Spain Brothers learned Irish songs at their father's knee. This band of brothers have honed their craft over nearly two decades of international performances and are now a road-tested Irish vocal group. A host of various instruments and five male vocals, using precise three-part harmonies blend perfectly for what many describe as a wall of sound. RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. This award winning ensemble includes members that hail from Philadelphia, Dublin, Canada and Louisville, KY and have played with Solas, Riverdance, Slide, Clannad, Fiddlers' Bid, Moya Brennan, Eileen Ivers, Hazel O'Conner, Full Frontal Folk, Keith & Kristyn Getty, Barc, Tada, and the Guy Mendilow Band. The band won recently won an Independent Music Awards for Best Song in World/Traditional Category. The band recently released their third album, 'Somewhere Along the Road'.
What better way to celebrate the bone chilling temperatures of January with the Winter Winds by Mumford & Sons along with music from The Chieftans & The Decemberists, Eileen Ivers, Gaelic Storm, Carlos Nunez, and a sneak peak at a new release by the Chancey Brother's from their upcoming CD. Windy City Irish Radio also announces this year's inductees to the 2014 Irish American Hall of Fame. Join Mike Shevlin and Tim Taylor for a night of the best Irish music and entertainment.
