In today's conversation, we connect with Dr. Adi Jaffe, a #1 best-selling author and nationally recognized expert on transformation and communication – especially in times of deep crisis. As the author of groundbreaking works like The Abstinence Myth and Unhooked: Free Yourself from Addiction Forever, Dr. Jaffe's mission is both simple and radical: to help people overcome addiction and life challenges without shame, judgment, or rigid rules… Dr. Jaffe's work spans mental health, addiction, relationships, and professional identity, supporting individuals navigating personal, career, and emotional crises. He spent nearly a decade as a lecturer in UCLA's Psychology Department and served as Executive Director and Co-Founder of one of the country's most progressive mental health treatment centers before founding IGNTD. Through IGNTD, Dr. Jaffe is reshaping how we understand and address mental health by helping people move beyond shame, reconnect with purpose and joy, and build lives rooted in fulfillment — for themselves and those around them. This discussion outlines: How anxiety and mental health challenges have evolved in recent years. The psychological impact of technology on modern life. How to navigate conflict in healthier, more constructive ways, and how substances can interfere with that process. The importance of reframing the conventional ideals of addiction. Dr. K explores how turning suffering into an identity prevents growth and why relying on willpower often leads to burnout. He shares practical tools to find internal motivation and master difficult social interactions. • The Identity Trap: Building your personality around your problems makes recovery feel like a betrayal of yourself. • The Willpower Paradox: Forcing yourself to do things is an independent risk factor for future stagnation and action crises. • Social S-Tier Moves: Use specific communication hacks to handle criticism and accept compliments without feeling defensive. • The Science of Cheating: Many students use AI because modern systems reward grades and efficiency over actual deep learning. • Action vs. State: Successful people focus on doing the work rather than chasing a specific emotional state or feelingHG Coaching : https://bit.ly/46bIkdo Dr. K's Guide to Mental Health: https://bit.ly/44z3SztHG Memberships : https://bit.ly/3TNoMVf Products & Services : https://bit.ly/44kz7x0 HealthyGamer.GG: https://bit.ly/3ZOopgQ Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textGUEST: GREG GIFFORD, author, Lies My Therapist Told MeThe statistics are staggering: one in five people in America have been diagnosed with a “mental illness.” One in six people are taking powerful psychotropic medications, such as anti-depressants, anti-anxieties, and stimulants. Many Christians have been trapped in the vortex of the “mental health industry” as well. And here's the troubling part in the majority of the cases: wrong diagnoses lead to wrong and harmful treatments. Our guest this weekend is Greg Gifford. He is the chair of the School of Biblical Studies at The Master's University, a fellow at the Fortis Institute, and author of the compelling new book, Lies My Therapist Told Me: Why Christians Should Aim for More Than Just Treating Symptoms. He will explain the important distinction between the immaterial mind and the material brain and how God's Word is all-sufficient to renew the mind to think and live for God's glory.---------------------------------Lies My Therapist Told Me - From beloved Christian counselor, professor, and podcaster Greg Gifford comes a bold critique of the mental health establishment. The ICE surge in Minnesota has meant a huge number of arrests, protests, confrontations, deportations, children and adults sent to detention facilities, and deaths. It's also meant massive anxiety, fear, and trauma around the state. Marcus Schmit of NAMI Minnesota says this is being felt acutely among people already struggling with severe mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and severe anxiety and depression. His organization has received overwhelming demand for help that they are doing their best to meet and trying to help those in need avoid worst case scenarios such as suicide and loss of contact with caregivers. Marcus says it's time for ICE to get out of the state. He and our Minnesota-based host, John Moe, talk about the urgency of the situation, how the community is becoming stronger in response, and how the trauma of what's being done to Minnesota will remain long after the last black SUV drives away.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. February honesty hits different. The motivation buzz fades, real life crowds in, and the question sharpens: are we building lives that actually fit? We ditch quick fixes for sturdy rules—starting with our favorite: never miss twice. Miss a day, reset the next. It's the cure for all-or-nothing thinking and the backbone of habits that last.We dig into the quiet power of privacy (not secrecy), better boundaries, and fewer explanations—and how that creates space for a true “year of impact.” From kinder no's and protected relationships to midlife glow-ups that go deeper than skincare (though yes, chemical peels and “don't cut bangs” still make an appearance), this episode is about moving from performance to alignment.Books, therapy, and responsibility thread it all together. Fiction as soul care. Clarity over buzzwords. Owning harm, apologizing when possible, and living honestly when life won't wrap things up neatly. If you're craving sustainable habits, better boundaries, and a midlife reframe that actually works, this one's for you.

There's pressure, comparison, thoughts that may feel louder. In this solo episode, I talk about how Valentine's Day, especially social media posts, can amplify ROCD thoughts, even if you're not in a relationship. I dive deep into the importance of slowing down, self-compassion, and noticing thoughts without needing to assign meaning or turn them into answers. If this time of year and "big" days (birthdays, anniversaries, engagement, moving in together) make your thoughts feel louder, you're not alone. Send us a textEver been told to “suck it up” after a call that split your world in two? We challenge that script with a grounded, respectful look at how first responders can access care that actually helps. Steve sits down with licensed clinician and podcaster Susan Roggendorf for a candid, unfiltered conversation about culture, stigma, and practical support for police, fire, EMS, dispatch, ER, ICU, NICU, and corrections. We unpack why the tired question “What's the worst thing you've seen?” is not only unhelpful but harmful—and what clinicians should ask instead. Susan shares her background serving LGBTQ clients and first responders, detailing how role-specific stressors shape symptoms: from dispatchers carrying incomplete stories and auditory flashbacks, to EMS haunted by pediatric calls, to ER staff absorbing wave after wave of crisis without pause. Together, we outline a trauma-informed approach that centers consent, pacing, and control, building skills that fit real shifts: brief grounding, tactical breathing, movement that discharges stress, and cognitive resets you can use between calls. This episode also draws a clear map of the first responder circle without watering it down. We talk moral injury, hypervigilance, sleep disruption, and why peer support must be more than a checkbox. You'll hear podcasting war stories, yes, but also a deeper point: humility and repair are part of resilience, whether in a studio or on a scene. If you've ever sat through a therapy session that felt like a TV script, this is your reset. This year's Super Bowl is expected to attract $1.7 billion in legal U.S. wagers. But investigators are finding that there's also been a surge in illegal betting by minors. a16z general partner Erik Torenberg speaks with Justin Mares, founder and CEO of TrueMed. They discuss why American health outcomes are so poor compared to the rest of the developed world, how crop subsidies created a food system that "systematically outputs unhealthy people," and what it would take to treat the chronic disease crisis as a national security issue. Mares explains how TrueMed allows people to spend tax-free HSA and FSA dollars on lifestyle interventions like gym memberships, sleep aids, and healthier food—and why he believes this could redirect hundreds of billions of dollars toward prevention. They also explore the case for psychedelics as mental health therapy and why peptides could disrupt the pharmaceutical industry. Michael Bishop grew up surrounded by emotional trauma, bullying, homelessness, and instability, moving in and out of the foster care system while dealing with serious issues at home. Fighting became a way to survive, and that anger eventually led to him being locked inside Massachusetts juvenile detention centers for nearly two years. In this episode, Michael shares a firsthand account of life inside youth detention, including physical abuse by guards and the long-term impact of being punished instead of protected. This conversation exposes the harsh realities of the juvenile justice system and how a broken upbringing and systemic failures shaped the course of his life. _____________________________________________ #JuvenileDetention #PrisonStories #JusticeSystem #SurvivorStory #TrueCrimePodcast #Massachusetts #LifeBehindBars #lockedin _____________________________________________ Thank you to PRIZEPICKS & GOLD DROP SELTZERS for sponsoring this episode: PRIZEPICKS: Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/IANBICK and use code IANBICK and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! _____________________________________________ GOLD DROP: Head to https://www.thedryoak.com/ and use promo code LOCKEDIN at checkout for 10% off your order. _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Shop Locked In Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Brutal Beginnings Inside Juvenile Detention 00:40 Childhood Trauma, Homelessness & Foster Care 01:05 Meet Mike: His Story Begins 02:24 Growing Up With Instability & Family Struggles 05:04 Homelessness, Loss & a Broken Family System 08:26 Bullying, New Schools & Feeling Like an Outsider 13:13 Gifted Programs, Mental Health & Acting Out 16:32 Rebellion, Police Encounters & the CHINS Program 23:00 School Fights, Suspensions & Falling Behind 27:27 DSS Group Homes & Foster Care 33:02 Foster Homes, School Incidents & Authority Clashes 40:54 Probation, Drug Tests & Escalating Legal Trouble 46:26 Alternative School, Metal Detectors & Physical Restraints 53:46 Probation Chaos, Failed Drug Tests & Court Dates 56:14 Sentenced to Juvenile Detention 01:01:14 Intake & Assessment Unit: Fear, Isolation & First Restraints 01:11:51 Westborough Secure Unit: Abuse, Trauma & Turning 18 01:20:05 Staff Abuse, Manipulation & Surviving the System 01:31:01 Developing Narcolepsy While Locked Up 01:39:27 Violence, Corruption & Hard Lessons Learned 01:46:03 Other Kids' Stories: System Failure on Repeat 01:53:37 The Final Straw: Restraint, Investigation & Consequences 02:02:02 Transferred to a New Facility: A Glimmer of Hope 02:08:11 Release From Juvie, Recovery & Life After Lockup 02:13:29 Mental Health, Healing & Breaking the Cycle 02:16:49 Final Thoughts: Advice for At-Risk Youth Learn more about your ad choices. Send us a textWhat happens when modern neuroscience, ancient plant medicine, and spiritual self-awareness collide? In this powerful conversation, Joey Pinz sits down with Dr. Leah Linder—naturopathic physician, reverend, and co-founder of Setas Seminary—to explore how psilocybin mushrooms are being used responsibly, ethically, and intentionally to support healing from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, addiction, and cognitive decline.Leah breaks down the actual science behind psilocybin—how it reduces neuroinflammation, stimulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and helps the brain form new neural pathways—while also explaining why integration and nervous system regulation matter far more than the ceremony itself. You'll also hear why psilocybin became a Schedule I substance, how federal religious protections allow safe access today, and why healing isn't about being “fixed,” but about learning to listen to your body and rewrite old stories. This episode is grounded, thoughtful, and eye-opening—perfect for anyone curious about the future of mental wellness, consciousness, and sustainable personal growth.
