Tim shares his deeply personal journey through childhood sexual abuse, addiction to pornography, decades of therapy, and the breakthrough moments that helped him identify trauma, address it, and refuse to let it define his future, emphasizing the role of vulnerability, empathy, storytelling, and intentional relationships in real healing. Erwin reflects on his own faith journey, from a life-giving introduction to church to encountering toxic leadership in Los Angeles that resulted in years of extreme stress, mental health strain, and family pain, underscoring the danger of unsafe spiritual environments and the necessity of having people who are genuinely for you. Together, they examine the challenges leaders face in being vulnerable, the importance of creating supportive cultures for pastors, men, and families, and how dissociation, shame, and unprocessed trauma can quietly shape identity. The conversation also addresses parenting with transparency, modeling vulnerability for children, supporting men's mental health, celebrating growth and success, and shifting identity toward who we are becoming rather than what we've survived. Throughout the episode, faith is presented not as denial of pain but as a pathway through it—one that embraces therapy, community, courage, and celebration as essential tools for healing, leadership, and lasting transformation.Join the Mind Shift community here: http://erwinmcmanus.com/mindshiftpodFollow On Socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@ErwinRaphaelMcManushttps://instagram.com/mindshiftpodhttps://instagram.com/erwinmcmanushttps://instagram.com/aaroncmcmanusJoin The Newsletter!https://erwinmcmanus.com/newsletter

Guest Xyla Foxlin focuses on how the FAA and the aviation community can better support mental health issues faced by pilots and other aviation professionals. Foxlin is an engineer and pilot who produced an award-winning video about pilot mental health. Her aviation journey highlights include a Young Eagles flight that cemented her fascination with aviation, owning and maintaining a Cessna 140 that she has flown from coast to coast, a 2025 visit to Oshkosh and regaining her FAA medical certificate.Foxlin discusses efforts with the Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) to push the Pilot Mental Health in Aviation Act of 2025 through the House of Representatives. She and the PMHC continue to educate the general public on the need to reform how pilot mental health issues are handled. In her personal story, Foxlin had to regain her medical certification and ability to fly after disclosing past mental health-related medical treatments. In the current FAA medical certification system, a significant percentage of pilots hide mental health conditions or avoid treatment entirely because of concern that their medical certification and their livelihood can be taken away.Greg Feith, John Goglia, and Todd Curtis share the breadth of aviation-related mental health concerns, including investigators who may be affected by their work, mechanics who committed suicide or were at risk for committing suicide after an aircraft accident, and the trauma that an entire community may face after a major plane crash. This week on Health Matters, we're sharing an episode of NewYork-Presbyterian's Advances in Care, a show for listeners who want to stay at the forefront of the latest medical innovations and research. On this episode of Advances in Care, host Erin Welsh first hears from Dr. Richard Friedman, a clinical psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Director of the Psychopharmacology Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine. Using his background in psychopharmacology, Dr. Friedman distinguishes between psychedelics and standard antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs, explaining the various mechanisms in the brain that respond uniquely to psychedelic compounds. Dr. Friedman also identifies that the challenge of proving efficacy of psychedelic therapy lies in the question of how to design a clinical trial that gives patients a convincing placebo. To learn more about the challenges of trial design, Erin also speaks to Dr. David Hellerstein, a research psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia. Dr. Hellerstein contributed to a 2022 trial of synthetic psilocybin in patients with treatment resistant depression. He and his colleagues took a unique approach to dosing patients so that they could better understand the response rates of patients who use psychedelic therapy. The results of that trial underscore an emerging pattern in the field of psychiatry – that while psychedelic therapy has its risks, it's also a promising alternative treatment for countless psychiatric disorders. Dr. Hellerstein also shares more about the future of clinical research on psychedelic therapies to potentially treat a range of mental health disorders.***Dr. Richard Friedman is a professor of clinical psychiatry and is actively involved in clinical research of mood disorders. In particular, he is involved in several ongoing randomized clinical trials of both approved and investigational drugs for the treatment of major depression, chronic depression, and dysthymia.Dr. David J. Hellerstein directs the Depression Evaluation Service at Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, which conducts studies on the medication and psychotherapy treatment of conditions including major depression, chronic depression, and bipolar disorder.___Health Matters is your weekly dose of health and wellness information, from the leading experts. In this Healthy Mind, Healthy Life episode, host Yusuf talks with Brett Gallant, a New Brunswick Canada IT and cybersecurity business owner who hit 349 pounds while running on burnout and grief after his father's death. Brett breaks down the real weight loss transformation behind the before and after. Not hacks. A rebuild of identity, priorities, and daily systems. He shares his October 2023 “decision day” moment, why mindset is a muscle, and how consistent 10 minute walks can compound into sustainable fat loss, stronger mental health, and better leadership at work and home. If you are stuck in stress, emotional eating, or nonstop responsibilities, this is a practical reset for health, boundaries, and discipline that actually lasts. About the guest: Brett Gallant is a Canadian entrepreneur and cybersecurity business owner. After reaching 349 pounds and feeling exhausted and disconnected from himself, he committed to a structured health reset. He has released about 140 pounds so far and shares his systems around mindset training, food as fuel, accountability, and sustainable habits for busy professionals. Key takeaways: Burnout recovery and weight loss often start with one uncomfortable truth, not a gym membership. “Decision day” creates commitment. Brett chose October 2023 as the line in the sand. Put your oxygen mask on first. Self care is a leadership strategy, not selfishness. Mindset is a muscle. Train it daily when the scale stalls and business gets chaotic. Stop treating progress like a highlight reel. Celebrate non scale wins like showing up. You cannot out exercise a bad diet. Rebuild your relationship with food, from emotional coping to fuel. Consistency compounds. Start with 10 minutes, then stack three short walks if needed. Treat yourself like your best client. Schedule movement like a non negotiable meeting. Accountability helps. Go public or share goals with a peer group, then keep promises to yourself. Expect setbacks. Do not spiral. Catch it, reset fast, and keep going. Bigger bodies are not a discipline problem. Discipline can exist in work and family, then be redirected to health. Sustainable change improves leadership, energy, and how you show up for family and team. How listeners can connect with the guest: Instagram DM him the word “travel” to get his travel hack guide for staying on track while traveling For cybersecurity conversations: connect with Brett through his Instagram and ask about his cybersecurity work Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? From Čapek's enslaved robots to Asimov's hopeful laws, from Wells's remote-controlled war machines to Orwell's watchful screens, the blueprints were drawn in stories. Professor Mark Brake reveals how these fictions didn't just predict the future—they scripted it. Are we masters of our creations, or have the machines we dreamed up already begun reshaping humanity itself? The déjà vu is real. The reckoning is now. GUEST: Professor Mark Brake is a leading science communicator and author exploring the hidden feedback loop between imagination and innovation. He is the author of FutureWorld: Where Science Fiction Becomes Science and numerous bestselling books examining the real science behind Star Wars, superheroes, time travel, and the multiverse. Anger can be a scary topic for a lot of people. It usually doesn't feel good when you're experiencing it and it can be associated with behaviors that are very frightening indeed. But Dr. Ryan Martin, who is one of the few academics specializing in anger and who has written two books about it, says anger is a normal and even beneficial emotion to experience. It's your body's way of indicating that some injustice has been done, either to you or someone else. And that's good information to have. He says that if we can listen to anger for what it's telling us about ourselves and our surroundings, without throwing punches, it can lead to a more balanced and thoughtful life and, in the end, a more peaceful life. He also shares why so-called rage rooms are not really good for your anger at all (it's kind of like drinking in a bar to address your alcoholism) and how he's taught his own kids to own their anger and process it.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Send us a Positive Review! In this episode of Latter Day Struggles, Valerie and guest Maxine Hanks dive into the complexities of reform and personal wellness within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This fascinating conversation explores the first-hand experience of two women whose influential work spans a half-century in the LDS spotlight. With this time-span as a reference point, they discuss how the focus of institutional reprimand and control has shifted from scholars to mental health professionals, especially mental health workers who publicly address complex issues at the intersection of identity development, mental health, and its connection to LDS theology and practice. Further, they explore the phenomenon of "diffuse policing," where in some wards and stakes, fellow members, rather than just church leaders, report and judge one another, leading to a sense of danger and exclusion within spiritual communities. Ultimately, they call for continued efforts to embody love, create safe spaces, and support the health and healing of all members, at every stage of the faith journey. Books Referenced in this episode:"The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy" by Carol Lynn Pearson"Women and Authority: Re-Emerging Mormon Feminism" by Maxine HanksTimestamps:00:00 Introduction and Welcome00:49 Reflecting on Sacred Work01:49 Comparing Different Eras03:01 The Impact of the Internet06:02 Public vs. Private Scholarship09:09 Mental Health Workers Under Fire14:07 Balancing Individual and Institutional Needs18:38 The Role of Mental Health in Faith Journeys24:18 The New Taboo: Mental Health and LGBTQ Issues25:40 Identity and Wellbeing: A Personal Journey27:31 The Role of Mental Health Workers in the Church30:32 Institutional Insecurity and Individual Growth33:09 Policing and Persecution Within the Church37:35 The Erosion of Safe Spaces in the Church45:20 The Greatest Danger to the Church Today49:51 Concluding Thoughts: Embodying Love and CompassionAdditional Episodes Referenced:Ep. 179 - 182: Maxine Hanks Life StoryEp. 222, 272: Maxine Hanks and Jody England Hansen on the recent garment changesSupport the showSupport the show Listen, Share, Rate & Review EPISODES Friday Episodes Annual Access $89 Friday Episodes Monthly Access $10 Valerie's Support & Processing Groups Gift a Scholarship Download Free Resources Visit our Website

Some people walk into a room and everything changes. They do not speak louder, try harder, or perform better, yet others feel calmer, steadier, and more grounded around them. This episode breaks down what Dr. K calls true or divine aura, which is different from confidence or charisma and cannot be faked through social skills. Dr. K explores how this kind of presence often emerges after profound psychological and existential collapse, when all normal coping mechanisms fail and a person connects to something deeper than ego, status, or validation. He explains why this stability feels magnetic to others, how it can be misused, and why chasing it directly is usually the wrong move. Topics Included What separates true aura from confidence or charisma Why modern psychology avoids studying divinity and aura The role of empathy and emotional stability in presence How extreme suffering can dissolve the ego Connection to the divine as a psychological experience Why people with aura seem immune to intimidation or rejection How cult leaders misuse this kind of presence Ick resistance and the link between aura and compassion Why longing for aura can actually block it A healthier way to live without chasing transformation HG Coaching : https://bit.ly/46bIkdo Dr. K's Guide to Mental Health: https://bit.ly/44z3Szt HG Memberships : https://bit.ly/3TNoMVf Products & Services : https://bit.ly/44kz7x0 HealthyGamer.GG: https://bit.ly/3ZOopgQ Learn more about your ad choices.
