Judge Milton Mack shares his mission to reform the mental health system by moving from crisis intervention to early treatment and prevention. His groundbreaking work in Michigan demonstrates how changing laws and procedures can dramatically improve outcomes while reducing costs. • Moving from an inpatient model to an outpatient world where over 90% of mental health care now occurs • Changing intervention standards to help people before they reach crisis, not waiting for the "magic moment" of danger • Implementing mediation for mental health cases to increase engagement and compliance • Creating a system that reduces trauma by avoiding unnecessary hospitalization and incarceration • Demonstrating success through Genesee County's 70% reduction in hospitalization and 90% treatment compliance • Building coordinated stakeholder systems where law enforcement, hospitals, courts and treatment providers work together • Focusing on upstream solutions to prevent people from entering the criminal justice system • Recognizing that early intervention in mental health is as important as early intervention for cancer We need to intervene early—we wouldn't wait to treat someone with cancer when they're stage four, and we do just as much damage by waiting to treat mental illness. Assisted outpatient treatment is the most humane option, far better than hospitalization, jail, or homelessness. This approach benefits everyone. https://tonymantor.com https://Facebook.com/tonymantor https://instagram.com/tonymantor https://twitter.com/tonymantor https://youtube.com/tonymantormusic intro/outro music bed written by T. Then came the isolation from friends and family, along with sleep deprivation, overwork and sexual manipulation.Liz was one of the many women chosen to become a kind of bride for the leader of an infamous Korean religious group. It wasn't until she became critically ill, that her family were able to get the help she needed to escape and to begin the process of being deprogrammed.Liz Cameron's memoir is called Cult Bride: How I was brainwashed and how I broke free. To binge even more great episodes of the Conversations podcast with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. EP. #1294 Programming the Cosmos: How Science Fiction Conditioned Humanity for Space What if humanity didn't invent the space age—but inherited it? In Part Three of our four-part series on how science fiction shapes reality, Professor Mark Brake traces an unsettling pattern: rockets, satellites, lunar landings, arcologies, even cosmic megastructures all appeared in fiction long before engineers built them. From Kepler to Clarke, storytellers sketched the architecture of the modern world centuries in advance. Were these writers merely imaginative—or were they quietly programming our collective future? Tonight, we follow the thread into orbit, where fiction stops entertaining us and starts directing us. GUEST: Professor Mark Brake is a leading science communicator and author exploring the hidden feedback loop between imagination and innovation. He is the author of FutureWorld: Where Science Fiction Becomes Science and numerous bestselling books examining the real science behind Star Wars, superheroes, time travel, and the multiverse. Known for translating complex ideas into gripping narratives, Brake argues that science fiction doesn't merely entertain — it quietly shapes the laboratories, technologies, and futures we eventually inhabit. Tim shares his deeply personal journey through childhood sexual abuse, addiction to pornography, decades of therapy, and the breakthrough moments that helped him identify trauma, address it, and refuse to let it define his future, emphasizing the role of vulnerability, empathy, storytelling, and intentional relationships in real healing. Erwin reflects on his own faith journey, from a life-giving introduction to church to encountering toxic leadership in Los Angeles that resulted in years of extreme stress, mental health strain, and family pain, underscoring the danger of unsafe spiritual environments and the necessity of having people who are genuinely for you. Together, they examine the challenges leaders face in being vulnerable, the importance of creating supportive cultures for pastors, men, and families, and how dissociation, shame, and unprocessed trauma can quietly shape identity. The conversation also addresses parenting with transparency, modeling vulnerability for children, supporting men's mental health, celebrating growth and success, and shifting identity toward who we are becoming rather than what we've survived. Throughout the episode, faith is presented not as denial of pain but as a pathway through it—one that embraces therapy, community, courage, and celebration as essential tools for healing, leadership, and lasting transformation.Join the Mind Shift community here: http://erwinmcmanus.com/mindshiftpodFollow On Socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@ErwinRaphaelMcManushttps://instagram.com/mindshiftpodhttps://instagram.com/erwinmcmanushttps://instagram.com/aaroncmcmanusJoin The Newsletter!https://erwinmcmanus.com/newsletter

Guest Xyla Foxlin focuses on how the FAA and the aviation community can better support mental health issues faced by pilots and other aviation professionals. Foxlin is an engineer and pilot who produced an award-winning video about pilot mental health. Her aviation journey highlights include a Young Eagles flight that cemented her fascination with aviation, owning and maintaining a Cessna 140 that she has flown from coast to coast, a 2025 visit to Oshkosh and regaining her FAA medical certificate.Foxlin discusses efforts with the Pilot Mental Health Campaign (PMHC) to push the Pilot Mental Health in Aviation Act of 2025 through the House of Representatives. She and the PMHC continue to educate the general public on the need to reform how pilot mental health issues are handled. In her personal story, Foxlin had to regain her medical certification and ability to fly after disclosing past mental health-related medical treatments. In the current FAA medical certification system, a significant percentage of pilots hide mental health conditions or avoid treatment entirely because of concern that their medical certification and their livelihood can be taken away.Greg Feith, John Goglia, and Todd Curtis share the breadth of aviation-related mental health concerns, including investigators who may be affected by their work, mechanics who committed suicide or were at risk for committing suicide after an aircraft accident, and the trauma that an entire community may face after a major plane crash. This week's Mental Man Monday livestream is a raw, culture-driven conversation about burnout, growth, and knowing when it's time to leave a season behind. Izzy Baker opens the episode by recapping the latest PSA: The Mental Health Podcast release, Social Media & You Reloaded Pt. 2, featuring licensed therapist Payton Hogan, and reflects on why conversations around therapy, emotional expression, and suicidal ideation still make many men uncomfortable — especially Black men. From there, the conversation shifts into how early exposure to adult environments can shape long-term dissatisfaction. Using 21 Savage's viral comments about being “clubbed out” as a case study, Izzy breaks down how many men are introduced to nightlife, validation, and external stimulation at a young age — only to feel bored, empty, or restless later in life. The discussion connects club culture, social conditioning, and mental health, questioning whether burnout is less about age and more about repetition without purpose. The livestream then pivots to John Cena's retirement and the psychology of endings. Izzy explores what it means to exit a season with intention — whether it's a career, a relationship, a lifestyle, or an identity you've outgrown. The episode challenges men to recognize when it's time to make a clean break instead of waiting to be forced out, emphasizing the mental toll of staying too long in spaces that no longer serve you.Throughout the conversation, Izzy weaves together faith, personal experience, and cultural commentary — touching on entrepreneurship, financial pressure, family responsibility, and the silent expectations placed on men to “just keep going.” This episode isn't about shaming the past; it's about recognizing patterns, honoring growth, and giving yourself permission to move forward. If you've ever felt tired of the same routines, disconnected from environments you once loved, or unsure how to transition into your next chapter, this Mental Man Monday is for you.Listen. And ask yourself what season you're being called to leave behind.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.TrustBuilder Package

Overcoming Depression and S******* Ideation with Bud Kraus

In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, Avik Chakraborty sits down with Bud Kraus, creator of the podcast Seriously Bud, for a real conversation about living with chronic depression, seasonal affective disorder and suicidal ideation. Bud shares what “silent suffering” looked like for him, why so many people mask pain with humor and what actually helped him move one day at a time. They talk about practical coping tools, getting support without shame, the role of counseling and medication and how purpose and family can shift your relationship with mental health over time. If you're navigating depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or emotional burnout, this episode focuses on grounded support, honest language and why asking for help is a strength at any age. About the Guest: Bud Kraus is a long-time educator and creator in the WordPress community and the host of Seriously Bud, a human-story podcast exploring life journeys, resilience and reinvention. He speaks openly about his experience with depression and suicidal ideation and how support systems, creativity and meaning helped him move forward. Key Takeaways: Depression can be chronic and still invisible. Bud describes how people often use a “happy face” while privately struggling with mental health. Seasonal shifts can amplify symptoms. He names winter and shorter days as a trigger pattern tied to seasonal affective disorder. Normalize asking direct questions. A pivotal moment came when someone finally asked Bud if he had suicidal thoughts, helping him realize those thoughts aren't “normal” for most people. Progress is usually a small pivot, not a miracle moment. Bud points to finding a trusted professional and structured support as a turning point. Coping can be practical and personal. For Bud, playing guitar created short-term relief and mental transport when the day felt unmanageable. Medication and therapy can be part of a healthy toolkit. He frames both as support options, not moral judgments. Purpose can return later than you expect. Bud ties healing to relationships, family and future joy that felt impossible during darker seasons. If you feel at risk, pause and reach out. Contact a trusted person, a mental health professional or your local emergency number. In the US, you can call or text 988. In this episode of Healthy Mind Healthy Life, host Sayan sits down with Jacquie Elliott to break down why holiday stress and family dynamics can crank up your inner critic. Fast. Jacquie reframes “self criticism” as abusive brain chatter. A deeper pattern of emotional self-abuse that fuels low self-worth, comparison and people-pleasing. You'll learn her ABCs framework to interrupt the spiral, rebuild self-respect and practice self-love in a practical way through awareness, belief and challenge. About the Guest: Jacquie Elliott is a certified spiritual and relationship coach, seasoned radio host and motivational speaker. She's the author of The Silent Bully: A Journey from Abusive Brain Chatter to Self-Love, and teaches simple tools to shift from “tornado head” into boundaries, presence and a healthier inner relationship. Key Takeaways: Name the inner critic for what it is. Jacquie calls it “abusive brain chatter”. Not just negative thoughts but a pattern that bullies, belittles and gaslights you, especially during holiday pressure and family triggers. Use the ABCs framework in real time. A is Aware: notice the script and write it down. B is Belief: reconnect to a loving inner source through journaling, meditation, prayer or a grounding ritual. C is Challenge: replace old core beliefs like “I'm not enough” with one sentence that is 10% kinder and more true. Watch for “Tornado Head”. That spiral where one mistake becomes a whole identity story. The reset is to return “home” to the present moment and get heart centered before you problem solve. Make self love practical. Start with 2 to 3 minutes of meditation. Journal both voices. List your top values and check alignment. Take small actions that build self respect and reduce shame. Build momentum with micro wins. Random acts of kindness and gratitude can create a dopamine lift that supports consistency, confidence and healthier boundaries. Holiday reminder. You do not need perfect mindset. You need a tool you will actually use when things get loud, tense or triggering. Send us a textA cave near Bethlehem. Stone, straw, and a light that still reaches us. We follow Saint Nicholas's quiet pilgrimage and find our own footing in a season when headlines blur, and hearts grow tired. The story of Emmanuel, God with us, becomes more than a lyric—it turns into a lifeline you can hold, a place you can enter, a presence you can trust when love feels heavy and the calendar won't slow down.We open with Nicholas's years near Beit Jala, exploring how a humble cave shaped his generous life. From there, we turn to the liturgies of Doug McKelvey's Every Moment Holy, to name the ache of too much information and too little strength. What if the most faithful move is to honor creaturely limits? What if justice and mercy begin with yielding the unbearable to the One whose shoulders can carry it? That shift reframes compassion, helping us respond to real needs that intersect our actual lives—family tensions, impatient lines, neighbors on edge—without going numb.Along the way, we offer simple prompts to list your griefs, discern your small share in God's redemptive work, and carry a single phrase of Scripture through the week. The goal isn't to escape reality; it's to live it with Emmanuel—fully God, fully human—beside you.If this speaks to you, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs rest, and leave a quick review to help others find this space. This week on Health Matters, we're sharing an episode of NewYork-Presbyterian's Advances in Care, a show for listeners who want to stay at the forefront of the latest medical innovations and research. On this episode of Advances in Care, host Erin Welsh first hears from Dr. Richard Friedman, a clinical psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Director of the Psychopharmacology Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine. Using his background in psychopharmacology, Dr. Friedman distinguishes between psychedelics and standard antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs, explaining the various mechanisms in the brain that respond uniquely to psychedelic compounds. Dr. Friedman also identifies that the challenge of proving efficacy of psychedelic therapy lies in the question of how to design a clinical trial that gives patients a convincing placebo. To learn more about the challenges of trial design, Erin also speaks to Dr. David Hellerstein, a research psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia. Dr. Hellerstein contributed to a 2022 trial of synthetic psilocybin in patients with treatment resistant depression. He and his colleagues took a unique approach to dosing patients so that they could better understand the response rates of patients who use psychedelic therapy. The results of that trial underscore an emerging pattern in the field of psychiatry – that while psychedelic therapy has its risks, it's also a promising alternative treatment for countless psychiatric disorders. Dr. Hellerstein also shares more about the future of clinical research on psychedelic therapies to potentially treat a range of mental health disorders.***Dr. Richard Friedman is a professor of clinical psychiatry and is actively involved in clinical research of mood disorders. In particular, he is involved in several ongoing randomized clinical trials of both approved and investigational drugs for the treatment of major depression, chronic depression, and dysthymia.Dr. David J. Hellerstein directs the Depression Evaluation Service at Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, which conducts studies on the medication and psychotherapy treatment of conditions including major depression, chronic depression, and bipolar disorder.___Health Matters is your weekly dose of health and wellness information, from the leading experts. What if I told you… grace isn't earned — it's remembered? In this solo transmission, Dr. Samuel B. Lee, MD invites you into a healing frequency that transcends striving, performance, and perfectionism: the living wave of grace. This episode is an energetic transmission — a sacred reminder that you are already whole, already loved, already source, and there is nothing to fix.Dr. Lee unpacks how grace functions not as mercy or forgiveness, but as a spontaneous scalar wave — a quantum coherence event between your incarnate self and your eternal Rishi Self. He vulnerably shares how unconscious childhood patterns of performance-based love shaped his drive for achievement, and how a moment of divine grace in Kauai dissolved lifetimes of striving into stillness, spaciousness, and sacred remembering. You'll journey through powerful metaphysical insights, poetic prayers, and cosmic remembrance as Dr. Lee reveals how grace re-maps karmic imprints, stabilizes the nervous system, and returns you to the frequency of wholeness — because you couldn't mess this up even if you tried. This episode is more than words — it's an invitation to pause, soften, and become receptive to the field of grace that's already here.
