We jump aboard this NFL season's biggest bandwagon with a look back at one of the league's most enduring, yet historically mediocre franchises - and the only club operational for the entirety of the post-AFL era to never appear in the Super Bowl. Bill Morris ("The Lions Finally Roar: The Ford Family. The Detroit Lions, And The Road To Redemption In The NFL") joins the podcast to help us wallow in the colorful, but supremely confounding history of pro football's Detroit Lions - especially during the last 60+ years of family majority ownership begun in earnest by William Clay Ford Sr. back in 1963. From the "Curse of Bobby Layne" to Billy Sims, from Barry Sanders to Matt Millen, and from the Pontiac Silverdome to 2008's historic 0-16 season - it's all here!  Plus, we speculate whether this year will finally see the Lions return to NFL championship glory. + + +  SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The Lions Finally Roar: The Ford Family. Tom grew up a city kid in Chicago, a camera always in his hand. He studied the art of photography and in his words, he loved being a “photographer of people”. As a favor, Tom was asked to go to a local rodeo to photograph by a friend-of-a-friend. Thyrl Latting, an Illinois stock contractor, heard about Tom and asked him to photograph his rodeos in 1976. Tom often shot 20 rolls of film a weekend, sleeping in the backseat of his car, looking for that perfect shot. In 1977, Tom arrived at the famed Pontiac Silverdome to shoot the Longhorn Rodeo. Tom describes this great arena as his favorite place to photograph because of the perfect lighting. The day was March 30, 1987. Hulk Hogan was still on top of the world as he had just beaten his biggest foe ever (literally and figuratively) the day prior at the historic WrestleMania III in front of 93,000 people at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. His opponent however, now billed at more than 500 pounds was entering the last phase of what had been a larger than life existence in every sense. Andre Roussimoff was only 40 years old when he lost to Hulk Hogan. He had lived a life that was really unprecedented in the human experience. He had massive size, yet travelled in airplanes and on long car drives daily for decades in the grueling life of a professional wrestler.

It was, besides, a bit of a proof of concept, built against the wishes of the company's own CEO, Boyne Resorts founder Everett Kircher. If they could just string a lift to the top, it would, the younger Kirchers knew, transform Big Sky forever. It did. Then all sorts of other things happened. The Ikon Pass. Montana's transformation into a hipster's Vermont West. Social media and the quest for something different. The fun slowly draining from Utah and Colorado as both suffocated under their own convenience. Big Sky needed a new tram. The first thing to understand about the new tram is that it does not simply replace the old tram. It runs on a different line, loading between the top of Swift Current and the bottom of Powder Seeker; the old tram loaded off the top of the latter lift. Here's the old versus the new line:The new line boosts the vertical drop from 1,450 feet to 2,135. Larger cabins can accommodate 75 passengers, a 500 percent increase from 15 in the old tram (Big Sky officials insist that the cars will rarely, if ever, carry that many skiers, with capacity metered to conditions and seats set aside for sightseers). One dramatic difference between the old and the new lines is a tower (the old tram had none), perched dramatically below the summit:It's a trip to ride through:But the most astonishing thing about riding the new Lone Peak tram is the sheer speed. It moves at up to 10 meters per second, which, when I first heard that, meant about as much to me as when my high school chemistry teacher tried to explain the concept of moles with a cigar-box analogy. But then I was riding up and the down-bound cabin passed me like someone just tossed a piano off the roof of a skyscraper:Here's the down-bound view:The top sits at 11,166 feet, which is by no means the highest lift in America, but it is the most prominent point for an amazing distance around, granting you stunning views of three states and two national parks, plus the Yellowstone Club ski area and Big Sky itself:The peak is fickle as hell though – an hour after I took those photos, I walked into a cloud bank on a second trip to the summit.Right now, the only way to access the tram is by riding the Swift Current 6 (itself an extraordinary lift, like borrowing someone's Porsche for a ride around the block), and skiing or walking a few hundred vertical feet down. But a two-stage, 10-passenger gondola is already under construction. This will load where the Explorer double currently does, and will terminate adjacent to the tram, creating an easy pedestrian journey from base to summit. That lift is scheduled to open for the 2025-26 ski season, and will, along with the Ramcharger 8 and Swifty, create an amazing 24 high-speed seats out of the main Big Sky base. The Lone Peak tram is, in my opinion, the most spectacular new ski lift coming online in America this winter. In a year of big lift projects, with Steamboat's 3.1-mile-long gondola and 14 new six-packs coming online, that's saying a lot.Right now, everyone has to download - it's been a low-snow year, and there's no skiing yet off the summit. Big Sky will, however, stay open until late April this season, so we have plenty of tram-ski days ahead. What we talked aboutWith Troy and TaylorSki town culture; the evolution of Big Sky from Montana backwater to leading North American ski area; why the new tram won't overload Lone Peak even though its capacity is five times that of the old tram; how much – and how fast – Big Sky changed after the 1995 installation of Tram 1; why Big Sky evolved in a way that other small Montana ski areas never did; wind mitigation for a lift going somewhere as insane as Lone Peak; the new tram's incredible speed; plans for the old tram's top and bottom stations; and the switch from pay-per-day to pay-per-ride for the tram.  With Stephen KircherThe significance of this lift when Boyne is putting in so many lifts; what the tram means for the future of Big Sky; the Kircher family legacy, past and future, at Big Sky; the near-death of Tram 1 before it was even built; who we can thank for Big Sky's insane lift fleet; what justifies the huge expense of D-Line technology; why Boyne only builds Doppelmayr lifts; European influence; and how America fell behind Europe in lift technology. What I got wrongI said that, when Middleton arrived in 1980, Big Sky had just a “handful of lifts off Andesite, nothing on Lone Peak.” While there wasn't a lift to the top of Lone Peak, Lone Mountain itself had several lifts by 1980:When I said that “Vail tends to split its lift fleet 50/50,” I meant between Doppelmayr and Leitner-Poma, the two major North American lift manufacturers.Podcast NotesOn the shift to pay-per-tram rideThis year, Big Sky switched from charging per day for tram access to charging per ride. The price ranges from $20 to $40 for skiers. That seems hefty, but frankly the place is so huge that you can have a great ski week with just a handful of tram laps. Here's a primer on how to set up your tram access:On cannister film rollsBefore we lived in the future, photos were scarce and expensive. A two-week family trip may involve two to five rolls of film, with 24 or 36 photos per roll, which you could not see until you deposited the spent cannisters at a photo development emporium and returned, some hours or days later, to retrieve them. Each roll cost between $5 and $7 to purchase, and an equal price to develop. Reprints were expensive and complicated. The rolls themselves were impossibly easy to destroy, and could, like vampires, disintegrate with direct exposure to sunlight. Witnessing the destruction of this system and its displacement by digital photos as limitless as videogame ammunition has been one of the great joys of my life.Anyway, that's what Middleton was referring to when he tells the story about the lost film cannister that almost ruined his day.On D-Line liftsKircher talks extensively about “D-Line lifts.” I constantly reference these as well, as though I have the faintest idea what I'm talking about, but all I know is that these are really kick-ass chairlifts, and are better than other sorts of chairlift. While several non-Boyne ski areas (Camelback, Sun Valley, Mammoth), have installed this most advanced lift class, Boyne owns perhaps as many as the rest of North American resorts combined, with two each at Big Sky (Ramcharger 8 and Swift Current 6) and Sunday River (Jordan 8 and Barker 6), and one each at Brighton (Crest 6), Loon (Kanc 8), Boyne Mountain (Disciples 8), and The Highlands (Camelot 6).On Everett Kircher the elderEverett Kircher, Stephen Kircher's father, was a bit of a cowboy entrepreneur, the swaggering sort from America's black-and-white past. He purchased the land for Boyne Mountain for $1, built an audacious contraption called the Gatlinburg Sky Park that ended up fueling the growth of the whole ski empire, and flew himself between Michigan and Montana after buying the resort in the mid-70s. He built the world's first triple, quad, and detachable six-person chairlifts and invented all sorts of snowmaking equipment. Boyne has more on their history page.On John KircherStephen's brother, John Kircher, was an important figure in the U.S. ski industry in general, and at Big Sky in particular. He passed away on Jan. 28 of this year. From Explore Big Sky:The oldest son of late Boyne Resorts co-founder Everett Kircher, John will be remembered for his impact in the modern ski industry. After stepping into Big Sky Resort's GM role in 1980, he became widely known for spearheading the Lone Peak Tram project in the early 1990s. He then spent roughly two decades of his career as president, CEO and, briefly, owner of Crystal Mountain Resort in Washington.Read the rest of the obit here.On Kircher ConceptsStephen Kircher's son is also named Everett. We discuss his contributions to the tram project, and also allude to a digital design agency he founded, Kircher Concepts. This work, which I find incredibly valuable, essentially visualizes lift projects at their announcement. The gondola rendering above comes from Kircher Concepts, but the agency does not work exclusively with Boyne – Telluride, Sun Valley, and Mount St. Louis Moonstone are also clients. Check out the full portfolio here.On Big Sky 2025Kircher refers to Big Sky 2025, which is essentially a masterplan outlining the resort's rapid evolution since 2015. While the plan has changed quite a bit since its announcement, it has completely transformed the resort with all sorts of lift, employee housing, parking, snowmaking, and other infrastructure upgrades. “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”   1987. That sounds like a very long time ago, but here's a few events that will provide some perspective. 1987 marked the time of the Black Monday stock market crash, the FDA approval of Prozac, the first sighting of The Simpsons on television, WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome, and the release of Guns N' Roses debut album, Appetite For Destruction. Additionally, many of us were deep in the throes of our own budding pubescence (and/or pube-essence) in 1987.   1987 also marked a time when the popularity and intensity of thrash began to grow ever more popular, clawing its way to the top of the mountain as one of the most transformative and powerful subgenres in all of heavy metal.  And in 1987, our heavy metal horizons were just beginning to blossom and expand, gradually guiding us towards heavier, faster, and darker metal music than we had ever experienced before.   Discover the most perfect example of a “flan” from 1987 and listen to the sexiest backmasking you've ever heard in your life (courtesy of the “hi-fidelity ghosts” that haunt Bunkerpoon Manor). 1983 Week 11 - Monday, May 16, 1983. Attendance: 32,862, TV: ESPN. New Jersey's Herschel Walker and a five-game winning streak by the Michigan Panthers brought out the crowds at the Pontiac Silverdome. They got what they wanted — a good show by Walker and a better show by their own Ken Lacy. While Walker ran for 87 yards — and caught passes for 105 more — it was Lacy who generally won the hearts of the 32,862 Panther fans, chalking up 156 yards and a touchdown as Michigan came back from a 17-3 halftime deficit with an explosive third quarter. John Williams also made the crowd sit up and take notice with a fine second-half performance, scoring two of the three TDs in the Panthers' rally to help them extend their current winning streak to six. Walker, meanwhile, moved back into the USFL rushing lead with 1,138 yards, 17 ahead of Philadelphia's Kelvin Bryant. Walker also caught three passes for 105 yards.

When I was a teenager, I spent entirely too much time at the Pontiac Silverdome watching the Detroit Pistons play basketball. In all the games I watched, it never occurred to me to wonder why a professional basketball team was playing in a cavernous, multi-purpose stadium entirely unsuited to basketball. Frank Andre Guridy begins his wonderful book The Sports Revolution: How Texas Changed the Culture of American Athletics (U Texas Press, 2021) by examining the Houston Astrodome as both a result of and a contributor to dramatic changes in sports and society in the United States. Guridy is recognizes that the games we watch and the athletes who play them are valuable in and of themselves and the book is full of lyrical descriptions of games and athletes. But he is mostly interested in the ways sports reflected and formed American society. He argues that the economic and social forces reshaping America in the 1960s and 70s provided the context for a change in the ways sports were played, produced and consumed and that Texas served as an incubator for these changes. His book is always insightful and interesting. But his examination of the intersection of race and economics in the emergence of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs is particularly strong, as is a chapter examining the emergence of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders as a national phenomenon. In a world where sports is again undergoing a transformation, The Sports Revolution offers a valuable lens through which to view both the dramatic changes of the 1970s and those so prominent in today's society. Week 3 - 1983: Oakland Invaders vs Michigan Panthers

1983 Week 3 - Saturday, March 19, 1983. Attendance: 28,952. TV: ESPN Oakland quarterback Fred Besana ruined Michigan's home opener, completing 24 of 30 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Wyatt Henderson in route to the Invaders' 33-27 win. It also overshadowed a sparkling comeback engineered by Bobby Hebert, the Panthers' quarterback, who was benched early. Hebert returned late in the third period and threw three TD passes to Derek Holloway. Both teams came into the contest at 1-1. Coached by Jim Stanley, the Panthers had scored just one touchdown in the first two contests (they won their opening game over the Birmingham Stallions by a 9-7 score thanks to three Novo Bojovic field goals). Rookie QB Bobby Hebert, a largely unknown quantity from out of Northwest Louisiana State, had won the starting job but was off to a slow start, as was the far-more-heralded rookie WR Anthony Carter from the Univ. of Michigan, who had been the team's biggest preseason signing. Oakland was coached by John Ralston, formerly of Stanford and the Denver Broncos, and had its own unheralded starting quarterback in Fred Besana, a 29-year-old who had last been behind center for the Twin Cities Cougars of the semi-pro California Football League. Backup to Steve Bartkowski and the ill-fated Joe Roth at California, he had failed to make the cut with the NFL Giants and Bills, but was making the most of his opportunity in the new USFL. He had already found a favorite target in WR Wyatt Henderson. The Invaders, who had skimped on talent coming out of college, also featured TE Raymond Chester and HB Arthur Whittington veteran ex-Raiders, on offense. There were 28,952 in attendance at the Pontiac Silverdome for the Saturday night game. Hebert started poorly, completing only one of his first seven passes, and was relieved by backup Whit Taylor. Still, the Panthers led by 3-0 after one quarter of play thanks to a 44-yard field goal by Bojovic. Oakland took the lead in the second quarter as Besana connected with Henderson on a fly pattern for a 45-yard touchdown. Bojovic kicked another 44-yard field goal but Kevin Shea was successful from 32 yards and the Invaders were up by 10-6 at the half. Oakland scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter, with Besana tossing another TD pass to Henderson, this time of 22 yards, and Whittington running for a 14-yard score. The extra point was missed after the latter TD, but it hardly seemed to matter as the Invaders held a commanding 23-6 lead. The Panthers were down but not out, however, and Hebert returned to the game to spark a furious rally. It began with a touchdown pass to WR Derek Holloway that covered 48 yards and, with the successful extra point, made it 23-13 heading into the fourth quarter. Fred Besana completed 24 of 30 passes for 341 yards with three touchdowns and none intercepted. While Wyatt Henderson scored two of those TDs among his three catches for 93 yards, Raymond Chester was Oakland's top receiver as he pulled in 7 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Arthur Whittington also had a big day, rushing for 109 yards and a TD on 26 carries and adding 4 catches for 46 more yards. For the Panthers, following the shaky start Bobby Hebert ended up completing 13 of 23 throws for 289 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. Derek Holloway caught three passes -- all for touchdowns -- and gained 108 yards. RB Ken Lacy was the team's leading ground gainer with 23 yards on 8 attempts. Anthony Carter had a mixed performance, pulling in two passes for 85 yards that included the one long bomb that set up Holloway's second TD. However, he also fumbled two punts, one of which led to an Oakland score.

You may have read or heard some of his work before, and if you did, you very well may know how much of a Detroit Lion's fan he is. So yes, as a diehard Lion's fan myself, this episode does tilt a little bit that way. Don't worry though, we get into so much football history, the episode ended up going over an hour. Below are a few of the topics we discuss: The mission of Randy's website and podcast - http://theworldoffootball.com/index.html (The World of Football) His experience at the most recent Professional Football Researcher's Association Convention (listen to episode 203 of The World of Football for a more in-depth rundown of the events The meat and potatoes of the interview revolved around the most recent issue of the https://www.profootballresearchers.org/coffin-corner.html (Coffin Corner), a bi-monthly publication from the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/football-history-in-america/ (Professional Researchers Association) - Randy had an article make the front cover, titled "10 Things You Didn't Know About the Detroit Lions" Randy has visited http://theworldoffootball.com/aboutme.htm (numerous graves of football legends) throughout his years. AUTHOR BIO ***NOTE - Below is from Randy's website - http://theworldoffootball.com/aboutme.htm (The World of Football) What do I know about The World of Football? Plenty. I have traveled quite a bit over the years and I've experienced many aspects of the football world first hand.  I saw my first NFL game in 1975 at the age of 16 when my brother took me to a Detroit Lions game. The Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers that day, 13-10. It was the first season that the Lions played in the Pontiac Silverdome.  I played high school football in 1976 at Maple Valley High School in Vermontville, Michigan. At 115 pounds, I was the third-string offensive center for the MV Lions. I was terrible as a player, but I was, and always have been, a huge fan of the game. In 1983, I attended my first United States Football League (USFL) game, also at the Pontiac Silverdome. The Michigan Panthers defeated the Chicago Blitz 17-12. In 1985 I flew out to Arizona from Michigan to see Doug Flutie and the New Jersey Generals play Doug Williams and the Arizona Outlaws. Arizona won the game, 31-13. (I was young and single at the time and could afford to do crazy stuff like that) I went to my first Canadian Football League game in Toronto in 1994, again to see Doug Flutie play. This time he was playing for the visiting Calgary Stampeders. Calgary beat the Toronto Argonauts, 52-3 at the SkyDome. In 2000, I attended my first Arena Football League game. The Grand Rapids Rampage lost to the visiting Tampa Bay Storm 74-54, but I had such a great time that night that I was hooked on the game. I became a Rampage season ticket holder the very next season. In 2003, I began covering the Rampage for the website, ArenaFan.com. I also attended my first National Indoor Football League game and my first arenafootball2 game that... Support this podcast

It's time for… Lombardi Memories. A show that takes you back in time, into January or February, to the greatest one-day spectacle in all of sports. This is the every-other-Tuesday podcast that looks back at each and every one of the 50-plus Super Bowls and tells the story of who won and why. For the fan who needs more than a boxscore, this podcast goes drive-by-drive, play-by-play through the most dramatic games in history. I'm your host, Tommy A. Phillips, and you can visit my website at tommyaphillips.com where you can find all of my books. Those include Great Eighties, a book that covers this Super Bowl and the next nine of them as well. Today we have Super Bowl XVI, which was held on January 24, 1982 in the Pontiac Silverdome, home of the Detroit Lions. The game was between two first-time Super Bowl teams: the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals and the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. If you're looking for the full story of this 1981 season, pick up my Great Eighties book and you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about that year and the rest of the eighties. As always, we have a pop quiz, and then homework at the end of the episode. The pop quiz question for today goes like this. In Super Bowl XVI, we had two first-time Super Bowl teams collide with each other, meaning one of them had to win in their first appearance. In the first 15 Super Bowls, how many games were won by first-time Super Bowl teams? You can count the Super Bowl I champion Green Bay Packers in your tally. The answer will come at the end of the podcast. Prelude to Super Bowl XVI The Cincinnati Bengals finished 6-10 and in last place in the AFC Central in 1980. But head coach Forrest Gregg had a plan in place, and in just his second year he got his team to a 12-4 record and a first-place finish in the AFC Central. The Bengals were at 5-3 at midseason but went on a tear in the second half of the season. They won five straight games before a loss to San Francisco, before beating Pittsburgh for a season sweep as well as Atlanta to finish as the #1 seed in the AFC. Quarterback Ken Anderson threw for 3,754 yards and 29 touchdowns, completing 62.6% of his passes, with only ten interceptions. He was an easy pick for NFL MVP. Amongst his receivers were tight end Dan Ross, who had 71 catches for 910 yards and five touchdowns, and Cris Collinsworth, a rookie wide receiver who caught 67 passes for 1,009 yards and eight touchdowns. The third leading receiver was running back Pete Johnson, who caught 46 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson also led the team in rushing with 1,077 yards on 274 carries, scoring 12 times on the ground. On defense, the Bengals were led by defensive backs Ken Riley, Louis Breeden, and Reggie Williams, each of whom had at least four interceptions (Riley had five). In the divisional round, the Bengals got by the Bills 28-21. Then, at the AFC Championship Game, the Bengals and Chargers faced each other in the coldest game by wind chill in NFL history. With the wind chill around minus-57 degrees Fahrenheit, the Bengals froze out the Chargers 27-7 to advance to their first Super Bowl. Over in the NFC, it was a two-team race between the Cowboys and 49ers for conference supremacy. After a 1-2 start, the 49ers got on a roll, winning seven games in a row, including a 45-14 pasting of the Cowboys. After a close loss to the Browns, the 49ers won their final four games, including a 21-3 beating of the Bengals. The 49ers got by the New York Giants in the divisional round 38-24, before one of the greatest games in NFL history. In a back-and-forth battle in San Francisco, quarterback Joe Montana led his team on a late drive and threw one of the most improbable touchdown passes ever. Receiver Dwight Clark came down with “The Catch” to give the 49ers the lead in the final minutes of the game. The 49ers then stopped the Cowboys by coming up with a fumble recovery, and they advanced to their first Super Bowl. This 49ers team was...

Andre still had much to learn, but he was so glad he wasn’t working some job or back out on the street ducking bullets, he just acted like he knew while soaking everything up. “All I did was watch George Clinton… and took notes in my mind,” he explains, “I just imitated what I saw them do… And I never told nobody I didn’t know what the fuck I was doin.”Indeed, Foxxe had the drive and talent to be in the room. But how did he get there in the first place? As it so happens, he literally walked through the door. It all started one fateful day in 1979, when a friend of Andre’s who kept bragging he was buddies with someone in PARLET asked him for a ride to the Funk Festival at the Pontiac Silverdome. When Andre showed up at the dude’s house, he was surprised to see Parliament-Funkadelic singers Ray Davis, Jessica Cleaves, Shirley Hayden, and Sheila Horne (aka Amuka) there as well. All hopped in 18-year-old Andre’s little yellow Duster and they went to the gig.Once there, they parted company and left Andre to wander around by himself. “I’m walking down this little hallway,” he remembers. “I hear good music playing behind this door. It wasn’t marked or anything. So, I’m inquisitive… I open the door and walk in. It was George Clinton and Bootsy Collins listening to a song called ‘Knee Deep’ that they were working on at the time. “Well damn. Andre’s presence didn’t seem to bother the two funk superheroes, so he stayed put. That’s when he noticed this kid, a bit younger than him, standing there, too. “I said, ‘What you doin in here?’” Andre recalls. “He goes, ‘That’s my dad right there.’ And I was like ‘That ain’t your dad!’ He goes, ‘What are YOU doin in here?’ I go ‘I just heard that music.’” As it turned out, the kid was Tracey aka Trey Lewd, who then invited Andre to join him onstage to sing part of “Flashlight” that very night. Two weeks later, Clinton and songwriter/producer Ron Dunbar offered Andre a job as a driver. They even got him some new wheels for the gig. “Everybody that was within Parliament-Funkadelic from ‘79 to like ‘81 I drove around in this green van,” he says. Meanwhile, Andre’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist—though he was still keeping quiet about them for the most part—were starting to come into play. He joined Trey’s project Plastic Brain Slam for a time, along with Steve Pannell and Trey’s brother Daryl Clinton. That fizzled out, but Clinton and Davis were starting to take notice of Andre’s musical acumen. He was pulled into George’s little brother’s project, Jimmy G and the Tackheads, who put out the fantastic and underrated Federation of Tackheads (1985). Then Jimmy G fell off and Andre found himself in the driver’s seat of the Incorporated Thang Band’s Lifestyles of the Roach and Famous (1988). Throughout, Andre was also writing and recording with serious cats like the almighty Junie Morrison and Blackbyrd McKnight, contributing cuts to Clinton joints like You Shouldn’t-Nuf Bit Fish (1983) and R&B Skeletons in the Closet (1986). But receiving credit and money for this valuable work wasn’t always in the cards. So it’s good that Foxxe further solidified his contributions to the P with his classic solo joint, I’m Funk and I’m Proud (P-Vine, 1994)—featuring a who’s who of funkateers—as well as releases from his Psychedelic Ghetto Pimpz. However, despite Andre’s determination and success, his transition from driver to player within the P-Funk team wasn’t necessarily a smooth one. “When I started doing it, of course nobody took me serious,” he explains. “Hell, I just picked you up from the airport!” Unfortunately, when his guitar game got strong enough that he was offered a job in the band, things didn’t get better. In fact, they kinda got worse. “That’s when I really started catchin it,” he laments. “And when I decided to develop an image in that thang… that set a few people back as well.” Specifically, the O.G.’s didn’t seem to appreciate Andre grabbing eyeballs with his stage outfit: a bridal gown, which he first put on as a dare inspired by his recent marriage as well as his dedication to the Funk. But even George seemed to be hating on it. “From there on… I just got a little resistance from those guys,” he says. “It was weird… I thought it was part of the gig. I didn’t know it was creating animosity… I was bringing my A game.”But Andre persisted, and over the course of the mid 80s to 2014 he performed with the P-Funk AllStars, sharing the stage with Blackbyrd, Garry Shider, Mike Hampton, and Billy Bass. “We all were expected to do the job,” says Andre about holding his own while doing the gig. “You’re not on the stage if you’re unqualified… Because, if you can’t do it, there’s 15 other cats that can come up here and outdo you. So if you got the blessing to do this job you better do these parts… And that’s how I was able to stay focused.” But life as a funk soldier wasn’t always what it was cracked up to be, and Andre was constantly in and out of the lineup. “I think I’ve been fired more than anybody in the whole P-Funk organization,” he quips. But nowadays the wisdom of hindsight has overruled any ill will he’s had toward George Clinton in the past. “I’ve said some bad things about that cat, and I’m sure he said some bad things about me too,” he admits, “But I realized I really love the dude… He was like Dad…. In families and relationships, you go back and forth with the parental figures… I can see his worth to the world and the music industry. I get it now. Because he’s a very valuable dude. He should be an American treasure, if you ask me.”In this unique, insightful hangout session, Foxxe talks about first wanting to play bass because of his love for Jermaine Jackson, becoming a guitar player while high on mescaline at Garry and Linda Shider’s house, and what P-Funk songs he helped create but never got credit for. He also talks about touring in Africa with afrobeat drummer/innovator Tony Allen, working as an A&R guy for Japan’s P-Vine records, his lifelong friendship with Amp Fiddler, and what it was like having EDDIE “Maggot Brain” HAZEL as a mentor and roommate for four years. One of the few things that could have brought the RAA crew out of retirement actually happened ... the long-awaited sacking of Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn! And yet, we fail to muster much glee. The general tone of this episode is best described as glum and resigned. We do experience a few moments of levity. The news that Amazon is apparently interested in building offices on the site of the former Pontiac Silverdome leads the guys to speculate that, should Amazon actually do this, it will surely lead to the company's downfall--a bitter but just price for having dared to settle on cursed ground. Anyway, not even Deano is of a mind that whomever the next GM and head coach may end up being will make much of a difference. And, to be honest, none of us particularly give a shit. RAA has once again worked its magic, walking us through the steps until, almost without knowing it, we achieve a kind of serenity of having genuinely given up on the Lions ... I really want to say "given up on the Lions forever!" but we all know that's not true. Despite our better judgement, we'll be back next season. And so will you. Roar.

Your Daily Detroit podcast for September 5, 2018: - In order to have more influence on the final law, the Michigan Senate passed two ballot initiatives Wednesday to raise the minimum wage and mandate employers provide sick leave for employees. But they didn’t pass them to make them into law; they passed them to change them and control them. - The man brought in to help stabilize Detroit’s finances since shortly after the city declared bankruptcy is leaving his post. John Hill will leave his job as the city’s chief financial officer at the end of the year. He was hired back in 2013 by former emergency manager Kevyn Orr during the city’s bankruptcy. Mayor Mike Duggan later persuaded him to stay on longer. - A couple of gubernatorial endorsements among groups representing police officers have been announced. - Fiat Chrysler says it has invested more than $30 million in a new facility to develop and test autonomous vehicles and advanced safety technology at its Chelsea Proving Grounds west of Ann Arbor. - Meanwhile, General Motors is investing $28 million in a new project at its advanced-battery lab at its Tech Center in Warren. In a LinkedIn post, GM chief Mary Barra says the automaker plans to add new test chambers and advanced equipment to accelerate the development of next-generation batteries. - If you have late fees and warrant costs with tickets in 36th District Court downtown, you’re in luck. - It’s a sign — or pair of signs, if you will — of the glory days of the Pontiac Silverdome, and you could own them. The Michigan Department of Transportation is auctioning two 7 foot by 14 foot aluminum road signs that have the words “Pontiac Silverdome” on them. And, Sven and Jer share their favorite Silverdome memories. That's it for today's show. Thanks so much, and if you like the show, find the Daily Detroit podcast in Apple Podcasts or wherever fine shows are found.

The show covers:- The real 78,000 attendance figure for show, and how we can be sure- A sentimental sojourn to the Silverdome's parking lot in 2007- What there is to learn about a perfect wrestling payoff from Piper v. Adonis- Steamboat v. Savage, and why it's annoying to pretend it wasn't an all-time classic- Recollections of whether or not Andre got the 3 on Hogan's first botched slam attempt - Bundy squashes a midget (commentators' term, not ours)- Alice Cooper's strange combination of apprehension and stubbornness while wielding Jake's snake - Your hosts take tremendous artistic liberties envisioning the conversation between Vince McMahon and Andre on the set of “The Princess Bride,” trying to sell the big man on working the big show- And laughing.
