Lerrel Pinto is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at New York University (NYU). His research is aimed at getting robots to generalize and adapt in the messy world we live in. "My uncle is also in the financial industry [and joked that I was] being stupid applying to colleges in the UK. [He said,] ‘Apply for colleges in the U.S.; exposure is better, college education is better... markets are more mature." Later in the conversation, Arnav shares insights on the cultural transformation taking place in India, where younger generations are increasingly drawn to finance and entrepreneurship. One of the most enduring stereotypes is that of rabidly anti-Semitic Irish Catholics, like Father Charles Coughlin of Boston and the sensationalized Gangs of New York trope of Irish street thugs attacking defenseless Jewish immigrants. In Opening Doors, Hasia R. Diner, one of the world's preeminent historians of immigration, tells a very different story; far from confrontational, the prevailing relationships between Jewish and Irish Americans were overwhelmingly cooperative, and the two groups were dependent upon one another to secure stable and upwardly mobile lives in their new home. Meryl chats with Marilyn Simon Rothstein about her new novel, Who Loves You Best. It's the story of three very different grandmothers competing for the attention of their mutual granddaughter. In addition, Marilyn discusses her approach to combining humor with serious issues in her books, and shares insights into her character-naming process. In that capacity she oversees a staff of over 150 professional social workers and support staff that provide a wide range of social work services in inpatient acute, outpatient and residential settings. Social workers at VANJHCS provide case management, discharge planning, program coordination, psychotherapy and educationservices. Prior to being appointed to her current position, Emily was the Program Manager for the Transition and Care Management (TCM) program at VANJHCS which serves Post 9/11 Veterans, providing case management and other support services. She began her career with the VHA in 2008 when she was hired as a CBOC Social worker at the Hudson Valley VA Health Care System. In that capacity she provided concrete services, case management and crisis intervention to Veterans in a Primary Care clinic. This allowed her to learn the VHA system inside and out rather quickly. Prior to joining VA, Ms. Feiner enjoyed a varied career in Social Work spanning over two decades. She worked with adolescents and young adults in schools and an outpatient clinic, homeless pregnant women in a maternity shelter, and was the Director of an Outpatient Substance Abuse Counseling Center. Ms. Feiner was also an adjunct professor of Social Work at Fordham Graduate School of Social Services where she taught courses in Advanced Practice, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Substance Abuse Treatment and Clinical Practice seminar. In addition, she also taught in the Human Services program at Westchester Community College. She has maintained a private psychotherapy practice since 1988. Emily has always had a strong commitment to her community and has served on the boards of several community agencies including HeadStart of Rockland and Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. She was twice elected to her local Village Board of trustees. Ms. Feiner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hamilton College and a Masters of Social Work from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has completed the coursework for a PhD in Social Work at New York University. She is the proud mother of two young adults, and enjoys going to hear live music, skiing and hiking in her free time. The latest episode is with Jenny Rickard, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Common App, a not-for-profit membership organization committed to the pursuit of access, equity, and integrity in the college admission process. Each year, more than one million students, one-third of whom are first-generation, apply to college through Common App's online application. Ms. Rickard was a pleasure to interview, it was fun conversation with lots of great details about her personal journey coupled with great insights and advice for our listeners. Ms. Rickard has shown a strong commitment to college access as evidenced by her accomplishments as the chief enrollment officer at both the University of Puget Sound and Bryn Mawr and in admission roles at Swarthmore and New York University School of Law. Her extensive service within the national higher education community includes a wide range of roles with the College Board, Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS), US Department of Education, and The Common Application Board of Directors — serving as Board President from 2007 to 2008. Within the corporate field, Ms. Rickard was a vice president responsible for higher education product strategy at PeopleSoft. She was also a consultant for the higher education software company Datatel and started her career on Wall Street at J.P. Morgan & Co. Since she joined Common App in August of 2016, the organization has developed a long-term strategic plan and roadmap and has expanded its access initiatives, including the acquisition of Reach Higher, the college access and success campaign founded by former First Lady Michelle Obama during her time in the White House, and the development of a new application system for transfer and adult students. Ms. Rickard serves on the board of directors for the Posse Foundation and College Possible. She is an advisory board member for the National Education Equity Lab and Liaison GradCAS, a centralized application for graduation admission, and she currently sits on the American Council on Education's Washington Higher Education Secretariat. She received a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania; a Master of Business Administration degree from New York University, Stern School of Business; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Swarthmore College. Randee and her mom are very close. They have a wonderful relationship and Randee says "she's my best cheerleader."  A lot of that has to do with the honesty and open communication that they had from the very beginning-"adoption was normal, not a stigma, not a tragedy."  Also, Randee learned at a young age that just because you are blood related doesn't guarantee you a loving relationship.Lois was definitely a role model to Randee. But Randee also feels that she learned from things that Lois did and didn't t do and then would form her own opinions. Randee had the luxury of knowing that her mom "always had my back.".Unfortunately, growing up in the 70's, Randee's parents divorced and her mom went to work. She was able to get contract work, writing and editing government contracts. It was a stressful time for Lois, but she made the best of it. Opening Doors: The Unlikely Alliance Between the Irish and the Jews in America (St. Martin's Press, 2024) tells the extraordinary story of how Irish and Jewish immigrants worked together to secure legitimacy in America.Popular belief holds that the various ethnic groups that emigrated to the United States at the turn of the twentieth century regarded one another with open hostility, fiercely competing for limited resources and even coming to blows in the crowded neighborhoods of major cities. One of the most enduring stereotypes is that of rabidly anti-Semitic Irish Catholics, like Father Charles Coughlin of Boston and the sensationalized Gangs of New York trope of Irish street thugs attacking defenseless Jewish immigrants. In Opening Doors, Hasia R. Diner, one of the world's preeminent historians of immigration, tells a very different story; far from confrontational, the prevailing relationships between Jewish and Irish Americans were overwhelmingly cooperative, and the two groups were dependent upon one another to secure stable and upwardly mobile lives in their new home. Susan Walsh was a freelance journalist and writer who mysteriously disappeared on July 16, 1996, outside her home in Nutley, New Jersey. She had been investigating topics such as the Russian mafia and New York City's underground vampire community, which led to speculation about her disappearance. Suasan had a complex life—she worked as an exotic dancer to support herself while pursuing a degree in English at New York University. She had also struggled with substance abuse, though she had maintained 11 years of sobrietybefore her disappearance. To this day Susan's case remains unsolved, and theories range from foul play to voluntary disappearance. He manages due diligence processes on land, permitting, and utility interconnection and is in charge of financing and structuring through Note to Proceed (“NTP”) to Commercial Operation Date (“COD”). Benoy composes teams suitable for all project development and construction tasks. He is also involved in project planning and pipeline financial modeling. He has been part of all sides of the transaction and this allows him to provide unique perspectives and value. Benoy has extensive experience in financial engineering to make solar projects profitable. Before founding Reneu Energy, he was the SREC Trader in the Project Finance Group for SolarCity which merged with Tesla in 2016.  He originated SREC trades with buyers and co-developed their SREC monetization and hedging strategy with the senior management of SolarCity to move into the east coast markets.  Benoy was the Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners which is a national solar installer where he focused on project finance solutions for commercial scale solar projects.  He also worked for Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund, where he analyzed potential investments in renewable energy projects and worked on maximizing the financial return of the projects in the portfolio.  Benoy also worked on the sale of all of the renewable energy projects in Ridgewood's portfolio.   He was in the Energy Structured Finance practice for Deloitte & Touche and in Financial Advisory Services practice at Ernst & Young.  Benoy received his first experience in Finance as an intern at D.E. Shaw & Co., which is a global investment firm with 37 billion dollars in investment capital. If your reaction to the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol was to think, 'That's not us,' think again. In Illiberal America: A History (Norton, 2024), a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian uncovers a powerful illiberalism as deep-seated in the American past as the founding ideals. A storm of illiberalism, building in the United States for years, unleashed its destructive force in the Capitol insurrection of January 6, 2021. The attack on American democracy and images of mob violence led many to recoil, thinking “That's not us.” But now we must think again, for Steven Hahn shows in his startling new history that illiberalism has deep roots in our past. To those who believe that the ideals announced in the Declaration of Independence set us apart as a nation, Hahn shows that Americans have long been animated by competing values, equally deep-seated, in which the illiberal will of the community overrides individual rights, and often protects itself by excluding perceived threats, whether on grounds of race, religion, gender, economic status, or ideology. Driven by popular movements and implemented through courts and legislation, illiberalism is part of the American bedrock. The United States was born a republic of loosely connected states and localities that demanded control of their domestic institutions, including slavery. As white settlement expanded west and immigration exploded in eastern cities, the democracy of the 1830s fueled expulsions of Blacks, Native Americans, Catholics, Mormons, and abolitionists. After the Civil War, southern states denied new constitutional guarantees of civil rights and enforced racial exclusions in everyday life. Illiberalism was modernized during the Progressive movement through advocates of eugenics who aimed to reduce the numbers of racial and ethnic minorities as well as the poor. The turmoil of the 1960s enabled George Wallace to tap local fears of unrest and build support outside the South, a politics adopted by Richard Nixon in 1968. Today, with illiberalism shaping elections and policy debates over guns, education, and abortion, it is urgent to understand its long history, and how that history bears on the present crisis. Steven Hahn is an acclaimed historian whose works include A Nation Under Our Feet, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize, and A Nation Without Borders. He is professor of history at New York University. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
