As Co-Founder and Producer of Art Bath with Elizabeth Yilmaz, she has collaborated with and presented more than 300 artists across disciplines, including leading figures in music, dance, opera, theater, and visual art. Through Art Bath, she has co-curated programs presented by Lincoln Center, 92NY, the Prototype Festival, Fotografiska, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and more. Mara also serves as Program and Advancement Manager for the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA), a global network of 500 performing arts leaders across 60 countries. In this role, she oversees several of ISPA's key initiatives, including the Pitch New Works and Fellowship programs. Before turning her focus to producing, Mara spent years as a professional dancer and choreographer. She is a longtime member of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and her choreography has been presented by New York Theatre Workshop, The Phillips Collection, and New Chamber Ballet. She holds a degree from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where she focused on intersections between art, religion, and society.   Liz Yilmaz Elizabeth Yilmaz is a professional dancer, educator, and producer based in New York City. Elizabeth is a former member of Ballet Hispánico and a longtime dancer with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. She holds a B.A. in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College and completed Harvard Business School's Crossover Into Business program in 2024. As a dedicated dance educator, Elizabeth is on faculty at both The 92nd Street Y (92NY) and the Joffrey Ballet Trainee Program. She is also the co-founder and producer of Art Bath NYC, an immersive, multidisciplinary salon series launched in 2022 with fellow dancer Mara Driscoll. Today I have the privilege and pleasure of speaking with Nicholas Mirzoeff and Priscilla Wathington about the genocide in Gaza, and how developing a new way of seeing and writing is demanded of us to address this historical moment. In the words of Silvia Federici, “Palestine is the World.”  We take Nick's recent book, To See in the Dark, and animate it by having Priscilla read from her poetry. Nick writes: “After a year of genocide, I think politics is now the meeting of the visible and the unspeakable. Unspeakable in that what is visible is so awful as to be beyond ordinary words. Unspeakable in that what is visible is forbidden to be said.What has been sayable about the unspeakable? It has been poets who have found ways to make language do what it should not have to do.”The goal behind this dynamic interplay is to create the grounds for solidarity with Palestine, and with all other oppressed peoples in the world, and with the planet itself.Nicholas Mirzoeff is Professor and chair in the Department of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University. To See In The Dark: Palestine and Visual  Activism  (2025) is being translated into Czech, Italian and Spanish. It is the most recent of more than a dozen books, including How To See The World (2015), translated into eleven languages. Since Occupy Wall Street (2011), his work has been in dialogue with social movements, including Black Lives Matter (The Appearance of Black Lives Matter) and #MeToo. His writing has appeared in the Guardian, The Nation and LARB. He lives in New York.Priscilla Wathington is a Palestinian American poet/editor and the author of the chapbook, Paper and Stick, which draws from her past human rights advocacy work. As a physicist, Bernstein made contributions to elementary particle physics and cosmology, working at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New York University, and Stevens Institute of Technology, where he became Professor Emeritus in 1967. He held visiting positions at CERN, Oxford, and the École Polytechnique, among others, and was the last surviving senior member of Project Orion, which studied the potential of nuclear pulse propulsion for space travel. Bernstein was a staff writer for The New Yorker for over three decades. He wrote regularly for The New York Review of Books, The Atlantic Monthly, and Scientific American, and authored over two dozen books, including Oppenheimer: Portrait of an Enigma (2004). Swarns Baldwin: A Love Story, the first major biography of James Baldwin in three decades, reveals how profoundly the writer's personal relationships shaped his life and work. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material and original research and interviews, this spellbinding book tells the overlapping stories of Baldwin's most sustaining intimate and artistic relationships: with his mentor, the Black American painter Beauford Delaney; with his lover and muse, the Swiss painter Lucien Happersberger; and with his collaborators, the famed Turkish actor Engin Cezzar and the iconoclastic French artist Yoran Cazac, whose long-overlooked significance as Baldwin's last great love is explored in these pages for the first time. Nicholas Boggs shows how Baldwin drew on all the complex forces within these relationships-geographical, cultural, political, artistic, and erotic- and alchemized them into novels, essays, and plays that speak truth to power and had an indelible impact on the civil rights movement and on Black and queer literary history. Richly immersive, Baldwin: A Love Story follows the writer's creative journey between Harlem, Paris, Switzerland, the southern United States, Istanbul, Africa, the South of France, and beyond. In so doing, it magnifies our understanding of the public and private lives of one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century, whose contributions only continue to grow in influence. Nicholas Boggs was an undergraduate when he discovered James Baldwin's out-of-print children's book, Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood, in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. After he tracked down its illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac, he went on to coedit an acclaimed new edition of the book in 2018. His writing has also been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin, James Baldwin Now, and Speculative Light: The Arts of Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin. He is the recipient of a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Leon Levy Center for Biography, the Beinecke Library and Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale, the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program, and the National Humanities Center, as well as residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell. He received his BA in English from Yale, his MFA in creative writing from American University, and his PhD in English from Columbia. Born and raised in Washington, DC, he lives in Brooklyn, New York. Rachel L. Swarns is a journalist, author and associate professor of journalism at New York University, who writes about race and history as a contributing writer for The New York Times. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Society of American Historians and her work has been recognized and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, the Leon Levy Center for Biography, the Biographers International Organization and others. Zijn poëzie wordt nog altijd geciteerd bij nationale vieringen en symboliseert zowel de hoop op eenheid als de complexe realiteit van een multiculturele samenleving.R. Peter Robbins returns to the show, and we talk about his return to the UK and Rendlesham, and then get into the life and research of Wilhelm Reich. If you are not familiar with the man, you should be. You will see why on this show. Peter is of course best known for his work on the Rendlesham Forest case, but has an extensive resume dealing with Reich as well. Peter Robbins was first introduced to the books of Wilhelm Reich as a teenager by a college roommate, to whom he remains deeply indebted. In 1976 he met Dr. Elsworth F. Baker, Reich's first assistant for the last eleven years of his life. Soon after this he became a patient of Dr. Baker and entered into almost seven years of medical orgone therapy with the distinguished orgonomist.Robbins went on to enroll in the classes New York University offered in scientific and social orgonomy which was taught by the Reich scholars Professors John Bell and Paul Matthews. They in turn invited him to become a member of their ongoing Seminar in Social and Scientific Orgonomy, patterned after the seminars which Sigmund Freud presided over during the nineteen twenties. Peter spent much of the nineteen eighties involved with this group, presenting a variety of papers to his fellow seminar members under Matthews' and Bell's guidance and leadership.Peter was a volunteer fundraiser for the American College of Orgonomy's (ACO) Building Fund and had two papers on Wilhelm Reich and UFOs published in the Journal of Orgonomy. He was part of a select group of volunteers invited to witness a demonstration of cloudbusting technology and presented on the subject of Reich and UFOs at the ACO's Princeton NJ facility, and at international conferences on the life and work of Reich in New York City, Ashland Oregon, Niece France and Karavomilos Greece. His lectures have been well received at numerous scientific and UFO conferences both here and abroad while his articles on the subject have been published in a variety of print and web publications. Robbins' extensively researched paper, “Politics, Religion and Human Nature: Practical Problems and Roadblocks on the Path Toward Official UFO Acknowledgment” is scheduled to be published in the upcoming issue of Annals of the Institute for Orgonomic Science. Paul Calandrino is a playwright, educator, and actor based in Eugene, Oregon, where Cai and he lived until she died. Since she passed, he has been curating her literary legacy with the release of this book, and he is currently collecting her blog content into book form. Cai Emmons (1951-2023) was the author of seven novels and a story collection, Vanishing. The Bells, is her final novel. She held a BA from Yale University and two MFAs, one from New York University in film and the other from the University of Oregon in fiction. Before turning to fiction, Emmons wrote plays and screenplays. Winner of a Student Academy Award, an Oregon Book Award, and the Leapfrog Global Fiction Prize, and finalist for the Narrative, The Missouri Review, and the Sarton awards, she taught at a variety of institutions, most recently in the creative writing program at the University of Oregon. She died in 2023 from Bulbar-onset ALS, a fast-progressing form of the disease that had taken her voice. The Bells, which features a protagonist with ALS, has just been released by Red Hen Press. Of all contest entries, Bush Bath is perhaps the embodiment of the 2025 festival contest theme, Remedies of Root. Penned by Brandon McIvor, it traces a man on a visit to Trinidad to see his dying mother, who abandoned him as a child. He delays the meeting, instead taking a symbolic "bush bath" in a forest pool to cleanse his pain. There, a recovered memory reveals his mother didn't save him from danger, but first let him go. As the story unfolds, McIvor's main character must decide whether to confront her with this painful truth or offer her peace. Brandon Mc Ivor was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago and holds a BSc in English Literature from New York University. He currently teaches English in Ehime, Japan, while continuing to build a literary practice that explores the craft and circulation of storytelling. His work has appeared in The Caribbean Writer and in Akashic Books' flash fiction series, among other publications. He was also shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Fiction Prize in 2020 for his work Finger, Spinster, Serial Killer. Both writer and marketer, Mc Ivor is deeply interested in the forms and voices through which stories are told, seeking to move audiences through fiction, poetry, and creative communication alike.

When it is hostile, attacking autonomy or values, they know how to resist it. The result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence. In the early twentieth century, the “academic engineers,” a cadre of elite, external reformers from foundations, businesses, and government, worked to reshape and reorganize the vast base of the higher education pyramid. Their reform efforts were largely directed at the lower tiers of higher education, but those efforts fell short, despite the wealth and power of their backers, leaving a legacy of successful resistance that affects every college and university in the United States. Today, another coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and politicians is again demanding efficiency, accountability, and utility from American higher education. But, as Ris argues, top-down design is not destiny. The United States has long been an international outlier, with a powerful business class, a weak social state, and an exceptional gun culture. In Law and Order Leviathan: America's Extraordinary Regime of Policing and Punishment (Princeton UP, 2025), David Garland shows how, after the 1960s, American-style capitalism disrupted poor communities and depleted social controls, giving rise to violence and social problems at levels altogether unknown in other affluent nations. Aggressive policing and punishment became the default response.Garland shows that America lags behind comparable nations in protections for working people. He identifies the structural sources of America's penal state and the community-level processes through which political economy impacts crime and policing. He argues that there is nothing paradoxical in America's reliance on coercive state controls; the nation's vaunted liberalism is largely an economic liberalism devoted to free markets and corporate power rather than to individual dignity and flourishing. Scott Galloway has spent the last few years ringing the alarm about how boys and young men are falling behind. Galloway, a marketing professor at New York University, best-selling author, and Kara's ‘Pivot' co-host, says his concern stems from the fact that he can relate to their problems. As a young boy raised by a single mom, Scott struggled in school, didn't have many friends, and barely got into college. But he went on to found several successful marketing firms, make millions, and raise two sons of his own. He shares his story — and his own advice on how to be a good man — in his new book, “Notes on Being a Man.” Kara and Scott talk about how the Trump campaign was able to win over young men with its regressive version of masculinity, why he thinks we need to re-embrace young men's horniness, and why more men need to step up as mentors.
