Imagine doubling your close rate and cutting your sales cycle in half. That's not a hypothetical. It's exactly what Pieter Leenhouts and his team did at Tax Guard, a Cogency Global company that sells to banks and financial institutions. Pieter walked me through exactly how they pulled it off, and it wasn't magic. It was math, structure, and a relentless focus on the front end of the pipeline.Why Their Sales Cycle Was So Long To Begin WithTax Guard's solution was new to the financial institutions they sold to, so reps had to spend real time educating buyers before those buyers even understood why they needed it.That education requirement, combined with deals that stalled out with the wrong contacts, created a long sales cycle and a lower close rate.Fixing it started with the pipeline itself, not with pushing reps to work harder.Give Every Rep the Right Size Pipeline, Not Just More DealsPieter's team found that around 120 opportunities was the right pipeline size for most of their account executives, though the number flexes based on how efficient a rep is.Instead of leaving reps to self source every opportunity, the team loads a portion of that pipeline for them, so reps spend more time working real opportunities and less time hunting for net new business.Their market of five to ten thousand financial institutions is well defined, which makes it possible to plan pipeline size with real precision instead of guessing.Split the Pipeline: 70 Percent Pre-Handraiser, 30 Percent Post-HandraiserOf those 120 opportunities, about 70 percent sit in the pre-handraiser stage, where reps are still working to connect with people.The remaining 30 percent sit in the post-handraiser stage, where there's already an active, ongoing conversation with the customer.That split keeps reps focused on outreach without starving the deals that are already moving.Marketing and Sales Load the Pipeline TogetherPieter is careful to point out that loading the pipeline isn't a sales-only effort. This week's experiment: a double feature of shark movies that proves the ocean isn't the only place where danger lurks. First up is Sharks N Da Hood, a movie that asks, “What if sharks invaded the streets?” and then seemingly forgot to ask literally any other question during the filmmaking process. What follows may be one of the most spectacularly awful movies ever made: baffling choices, painful dialogue, questionable acting, and a level of chaos that makes you wonder if anyone involved ever stopped to watch what they were creating.Then comes Bad CGI Sharks, which, despite a title that sounds like a warning label, is actually a surprisingly fun little low-budget shark movie. The CGI is exactly as advertised, the premise is ridiculous, and yet the movie understands something that Sharks N Da Hood apparently missed: if you're making a movie about absurd killer sharks, you should probably try to have some fun with it.The guys dive into both ends of the bargain-bin shark movie spectrum. One film is a cinematic shipwreck of nearly historic proportions. The other is goofy, self-aware entertainment that manages to rise above its limitations through sheer enthusiasm and a willingness to embrace the ridiculous.Expect terrible sharks, bad decisions, questionable effects, and one of the strangest double features to ever wash up on Breaking Brad. The Roadless Rule kicks things off, and it’s more interesting than it sounds. Roads through national forest and BLM land aren’t just recreation access — they’re wildfire infrastructure. Jimmy and Tyler talk through the Caldor Fire, where popular Sierra OHV routes served as fire lines and ingress for hotshot crews, and the broader ecological argument that decades of total fire suppression (no controlled burns, no small fires clearing brush) is exactly why mega-fires have gotten so much worse. The Roadless Rule — which has blocked any new road construction and forced a steady decline in usable routes — is now being reconsidered, with agencies reviewing historical road inventories to determine what could reopen for fire management purposes. It’s currently open for public comment, and Blue Ribbon Coalition has a tool on their site that maps your zip code to your legislators for submitting comments directly. Also covered: why picking up a rock on public land is technically a federal offense (it’s classified as mining), the ongoing accessibility angle of road closures for wheelchair users and other visitors who can’t hike miles in on foot, and the California OHV permit saga — a coalition-negotiated agreement that got rewritten by the legislative committee and failed its vote, leaving the whole permit effort dead for now. The back half covers two related legal patterns worth knowing: newly released Yellowstone grizzly bear studies show OHV use has never caused a single recorded grizzly death — despite that exact justification being used to close routes — and Jimmy and Tyler connect the dots to the nearly identical legal language used to justify closures at Oceano Dunes (snowy plover), the Western Mojave (desert tortoise), and now the Oregon Dunes (western marmot), in each case without a definitive study proving OHV is actually the cause of death.
