I realize this is not the topic we're used to hearing about on this podcast, but it's a necessary one, and I'm happy to support it. Veronica Life and I met virtually at Podfest Global in April, when she talked about domestic violence and stole everyone's heart. The Numospect folks that I've been working with for the last year were also affected, and every Friday on their live show (1:30-2:30pm EST on all socials) they have Veronica on to talk about domestic violence, to make it a less taboo subject, because people need to not feel alone in their experiences. Veronica shares some sobering numbers, as well as her own story, and why we need to make this a priority. What I've been most struck by is her goal to change a person's experience from shame, and leave them feeling JOY and hope. There's a lot of work to get there, but I'm inspired by the work that is happening with The Purple it Up for Domestic Violence Awareness people. There are many ways to help support this organization! From money donations, to purchasing merch (the shirts are unbelievably comfy!), to offering services or home space for victims, taking the Purple it up Challenge to sharing the message, to being a friend and supporting those who need it.I'm inspired by the work that Veronica and her team do daily, and want to support them in any way that I can, like featuring a podcast episode on domestic violence. I have taken the pledge to not drop the ball on domestic violence awareness - will you join me?Here's a link to their website: http://www.purpleitup.org/Purpleitup%20Our%20Events.htmlHere's a promo video for Purple It Up! https://youtu.be/9qfUs2gOTfASupport the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. Exclusive to Forgotten Australia listeners, this episode comprises the first 20 pages of The Murder Squad, my new book about homicide investigation in Sydney and NSW during the worst years of the Great Depression. We start with Detective-Sergeant Tom McRae in Albury in September 1934 as he investigates the Pyjama Girl, before flashing back to the triple tragedies he endured in his early life and as he started his rise through the ranks.Check out The Murder Squad's awesome cover:https://www.booktopia.com.au/the-murder-squad-michael-adams/book/9781922863836.htmlHere's what some very nice folks have been saying about The Murder Squad:‘The Murder Squad is a cracking decade-long history of crazed killers and cunning cops – a triumph of true crime storytelling backed by exhaustive research.' – Stephen Gibbs, Daily Mail‘Michael Adams has that rare ability to drop the reader right in the heart of the action. He gives such precise and evocative detail that the reader can almost see, hear and smell each crime scene. Murder Squad is a riveting read, bringing Australia's Great Depression era to life through a series of cracking true crime stories starring the ingenious Sydney detective Tom McRae.' – Jen Kelly, Herald Sun, In Black & White column and podcast‘Michael Adams takes you on a tense journey into Sydney's historical badlands. Compelling, rich and meticulous: this is Australian true crime at its very best.' – Candice Fox, author of Fire With Fire, The Chase and Crimson Lake‘Michael Adams is a master true crime storyteller. His mastery is firstly, in digging out intriguing historical crimes – many of which have long been forgotten – and secondly, in recounting them in the most compelling way. The Human Glove Mystery, The Pyjama Girl and The Park Demon all get the Michael Adams treatment, but so too the stories that didn't attract the sensational headlines, but are no less intriguing. And all of it against a backdrop of historic Australia and the men of the Murder Squad who hunted out the killers and tried to bring them to justice. So thoroughly researched, this is the ultimate reference for true crime in Australia during the depression years.' – Mercedes Maguire, The Daily Telegraph Hosted on Acast. This week, in a special bonus episode, Greg Wittstock, founder of Aquascape, explains how he invented the backyard pond industry, how he improvised a business model, and how he almost lost it all. After failing at franchising, Wittstock decided to give away his pond building expertise and marketing to landscape contractors in what he calls “a franchise system without a franchise fee.” And it worked. Always candid to a fault, he recounts how the business shot to $59 million in annual sales, why it then stagnated for 10 years, and what he ultimately figured out about social media marketing. Plus: he also explains why his first rule of customer service is: Don't give them what they ask for. Give them what they want.Show Notes:Here's Bo Burlingham's profile of Greg Wittstock: https://www.inc.com/magazine/20031101/aquascape.htmlHere's Greg's video of Shaquille O'Neal's pond installation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti-k4LUQBNs

Pastor John van Popta, retired pastor of Fellowship Church in Burlington is our guest (John is the producer/director of Tyrannus Hall and does much of the background research and organization for our podcasts). Our hosts, Bill and Winston, interview John about how best to welcome guests on “Communion Sundays.” Who should participate? Who should be withheld? John's research into the Biblical data has convinced him to examine carefully the manner whereby we withhold communion from visitors. Does Paul's rebuke of Peter, recorded for us in Galatians 2 speak to this matter. What about 1 Corinthians 11? Has the church misread Paul's command to self-examination? He suggests that there are better ways than the traditional Canadian Reformed practice of having the visitor present a document from a sister church affirming membership in good standing. He suggests change is necessary if we desire to develop a missional model of the church, that we might welcome new people to church membership. John retired a few years ago due to his Parkinson's Disease. This disease has impaired his speech somewhat. And his medications, though they control his tremors, cause some dyskinesia (involuntary movements).  Please look (and listen) past these disabilities and be stimulated to “examine the scriptures … to see if what [John] says is true” (Acts 17:11).Here is the link to Dr. NH Gootjes' article on “the Reformed confession” cited by John: https://www.spindleworks.com/library/gootjes/articles.htmHere is a link to an essay by John  where he discusses Paul's rebuke of Peter in Gal 2, because Peter denied table fellowship with Gentile Christians: https://fellowshippastor.blogspot.com/2019/11/visitors-at-communion.htmlHere  is a link to some notes by John on 1 Corinthians 11, where he discusses Paul's rebuke of the Corinthians for causing division in the church at the Lord's supper: https://fellowshippastor.blogspot.com/2022/01/1-corinthians-11-and-visitors-at.htmlGoFundMe UpdateSeveral weeks ago we opened a GoFundMe campaign to raise $ 3500 to cover subscription costs as well as to finance the purchase of new equipment. Dr. Kathleen Navarro is a research industrial hygienist at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Her research focuses on characterizing firefighter's exposure to chemicals from smoke, understand pathways of exposures, and developing practices to reduce exposure. Previously, she worked for the US Forest Service and conducted research quantifying exposure to smoke for the public and wildland firefighters and estimating risk of mortality for lung cancer and cardiovascular disease for wildland firefighters. To complete her research, she became qualified as a wildland firefighter and spent last fire season as a crewmember on the Redmond Hotshots. Her work can be found here:Risk assessment study - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30981117/Summary of results: Across all exposure scenarios and career durations, the calculated risk for LC and CVD was greater than one, indicating an increased risk of mortality from LC and CVD from PM.  Here are interpretations of the risk estimates that were calculated:  Firefighters working a short fire season (48 days) for 5 years have an 8% increase in risk of LC and 16% increase in risk of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease) mortality. Firefighters working a long fire season for 25 years have an 43% increase in risk of LC and 30% increase in risk of CVD (Cardiovascular Disease) mortality  Oh, how could I forget? She lives and teaches in Athens, Greece where she currently heads the English and Modern Languages Dept. at Deree College. Lucky for me, she is also a poetry and nonfiction faculty mentor in the low residency Mile-High MFA program at Regis University. She has taught in the Masters Program of the Englisches Seminar at the University of Freiburg, the Graduate Writing Program at New York University, and writing workshops at the University of Edinburgh, and the Aegean Arts Circle on the island of Andros. Her scholarly work has focused on 19th and 20th century American literature, and more recently Ralph Waldo Emerson's influence on Sylvia Plath's poems.Listen in as we discuss personal history, immigration in the era of Trump, the importance of voting for a not-so-ideal candidate, pain pornography, letting a piece of writing lie fallow, travel & identity, and so much more. Adrianne is truly a brilliant scholar and thinker of our time, there is something for everyone in this episode -- not to be missed.Find Kalfopoulou's works below:http://www.adriannekalfopoulou.com/publications.htmlHere is her essay we discuss on the episode:https://superstitionreview.asu.edu/issue24/nonfiction/adriannekalfopoulou--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/appSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/situationandstory/support Get full access to situation / story at situationstory.substack.com/subscribe

Leah Claire Allen is Assistant Professor in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) and English at Grinnell College. At Grinnell, Professor Allen teaches Introduction to GWSS, Theory and Methods in GWSS, Masculinity in American Literature, the capstone Senior Seminar in GWSS, and Queer and Trans Literatures. She received her PhD in Literature from Duke University, MA in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, and BA in English at the University of Winnipeg. Her current book project In Praise of Bad Critics revisits feminist critics from the 1960s and 1970s who have been labeled “bad critics” or “bad feminists” both within and outside of feminist circles. Her Autumn 2016 article in Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society argues that Andrea Dworkin, a quintessential “bad” critic and feminist, is an unexpected ancestor of queer theory. This article won the 2017 MLA Women's Caucus Florence Howe award for outstanding feminist scholarship. Professor Allen's research seeks to assess the methodologies and pedagogies that founded academic feminism with the aim of tracing the surprising history of contemporary queer and transgender theory in the forgotten and dismissed figures of the feminist past.In this episode, Dr. Allendefines feminismhow gender, inequality, and social status affects womens' healthdescribes her research on how the effects of division amongst feminists can lead to isolation, resulting in detrimental health consequencesYou can find her at https://www.grinnell.edu/user/allenleahRefer to these links to learn more about the feminists mentioned in this episode -Sara Ahmed (1969-- ). I've got a (likely) stupid pet peeve. When I was putting together my book, I saw a lot of author headshots. One thing I noticed about these headshots is that they presented many authors as sophisticated intellectuals. What I have noticed since that time is that if you do any type of creative work or are in a prominent position, your public relations team wants to present you in this same way. Very few people actually play out what this is presenting in their real lives. Maybe Nietzche always acted in this intellectual, thoughtful, brooding manner, but that may have just been because of his health issues. Everyone else is generally normal. Episode 50 - Michael Ian Black, pt. 1Hello and goddam we made it to FIFTY!After this year and a half of letting politics and social commentary exist on this show only as it came up within the conversations, for the first time, I’ve decided to talk for a few minutes all by myself at the top of the show, pretty much completely off topic, pretty much about my working through how to be a 53-year-old white straight male ally in these days of Trump and Weinstein and C.K.If you can make it through that ...Michael Ian Black and I talk about everything from our moms (of course) and his recent memoir, “Naval Gazing,” about his mother and her illness, among other things, to his podcast, “How to Be Amazing,” to dream jobs, to his twitter activism fighting Trump and all the other horrible shit therein that’s happened this year, to his three-decade (what I’m calling) love-feud with Marc Maron. Oh, and fame. We talk about fame too. Here’s verifiable information his bio says about him:Michael Ian Black is a multi-media talent who’s starred in numerous films and TV series, written and/or directed two films, is a prolific author and commentator, and regularly tours the country performing his ribald brand of jokes and observations. He most recently starred in TVLand's “The Jim Gaffigan Show” and Comedy Central’s “Another Period.” He also reprised one of his iconic film roles in Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later,” and previously in "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp." His third standup comedy special, “Noted Expert,” was released on Epix.Black has authored 11 books, including the recently released best seller, “A Child’s First Book of Trump.” He’s written two well-received memoirs: “Navel Gazing: True Tales of Bodies, Mostly Mine (but also my mom’s, which I know sounds weird)”, and “You're Not Doing It Right: Tales of Marriage, Sex, Death and Other Humiliations.”Eleanor Gordon-Smith’s “This American Life” piece: by turns upsetting, fascinating amusing and maybe ultimately depressing story on trying to get a few Australian men to reconsider the “harmless”ness catcalling and ass-slapping.https://m.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/603/once-more-with-feeling?act=1#act-1Nicole Stamp CNN “What Decent Men Can Do” - If you listen to my intro, you’ll know I’m not satisfied with this as being enough, at least for me, but it’s a darn good start:http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/21/opinions/what-men-can-do-me-too-stamp-opinion/index.htmlHere’s the "How if You’re a Man … Trash" piece I talked about in the intro:https://verysmartbrothas.theroot.com/how-if-you-re-a-man-to-deal-with-the-fact-that-you-re-1820410857?utm_source=theroot_facebook&utm_medium=socialflowHere's my essay, "Peep Show":https://psiloveyou.xyz/peep-show-9912979642cdWant more on the awful topics of recent weeks? This show is brought to you by Express Imprint, click on the link below and check out their Custom Koozie This week on Wine Time™ Radio Show with WineGuyMike™  I’m talking about Lambrusco. Why you might ask?  Because today, June 21st, is Lambrusco Day in Italy, and Lambrusco is one of the best wines to enjoy with food. Simple, fun, fizzy, refreshing, inexpensive, need I say more?Lambrusco is one of Italy’s most popular wines. Do you remember one of television’s most famous of tag lines “Riunite on Ice, That’s Nice”? Yes that’s right your Grandma’s Lambrusco, Riunite, is still claiming to be the biggest selling Italian wine in history here in the United States.Riunite Lambrusco was launched in the late 1960’s and what now seem like cheesy commercials ran on TV in the 70’s.  Cheesy or not that famous tag line is one of the most memorable ever, at least for those of us old enough to remember.  But the truth is this brand enjoyed one of the most well executed marketing campaigns ever.  That was yesterday, today Lambrusco has come of age and I’m here to share it with you. There is not anything to complicated or technical that we need to know in our approach to buying, chilling, and drinking Lambrusco.  In fact Lambrusco is rather simple and ultimately the secret to a great Lambrusco is one that produces a great head of foam when you pour it, just like a great beer.  Selections will unfortunately be limited on your local shelves unless you live in an area that has a great wine shop.  If you live on the east coast you will have more choices better selections. Wherever you have a concentration of die-hard Italians like me that enjoy Lambrusco retailers will show this sparkling gem from Italy some love.More and more you will find Lambrusco lovers who are so incredibly passionate about this frizzante wine from the Emilia-Romagna region in the heart of Italy that you just have to give it a try.The Emilia-Romagna region is located between two of my favorite areas in Italy. Parma which is home to some of my favorite raw cow’s milk cheese Parmigiano-Reggiano, yet another wonder of the world I cannot live without.  On the other side of Emilia is probably one of the most iconic areas of Italy, Modena, and the birth place of Ferrari exotic sports cars.Italian winemakers produce a large range of Lambrusco wines.  If you shop at a nice specialty shop and they take their wine program seriously it is somewhat safe to assume they have chosen a good selection of wines for you to purchase.  The best Lambrusco’s are going to be dry and made in a frizzante style.  There are three colors of fizzy Lambruscos: white (bianco), rose (rosato) and the classic red (rosso) ranging from sweet to bone dry.Prosecco is another Italian favorite that is mainly produced as a sparkling wine in either the fully sparkling (spumante) or lightly sparkling (frizzante, gentile) styles.  Proseccos are labeled “brut”, “extra dry”, or “dry”, with the brut being the driest.  Ask you wine steward of the store you shop in for the driest Lambrusco in a frizzante style that they offer for sale.Lambrusco is made using the Charmat method rather than the Champagne method, the French method of making sparkling wine.  The Charmat method is a second fermentation in pressurized tanks rather than in individual bottles.  The shorter, tank fermentation is preferable for Lambrusco because it preserves the freshness and the flavor of the grapes.Unlike Champagne, Lambrusco does not ferment in the bottle consequently the wine goes off or gets old quickly and should be drunk as young as possible, preferably within one year. What I love about Old World European wine is that they are a function of necessity.  The wines in each area are made to work with, match, or pair with the foods that are grown and raised in the region or area.  Lambrusco is no different and in the Emilia-Romagna region their food tends to be rich, salty and that is why Lambrusco works so well with the indigenous foods of the area.Lambrusco wine is lively and bright with fruit, balanced out with naturally high acidity which pair perfectly with the rich salty food dishes from this area.  Lambrusco like all Old World style wines are not overdone, featuring lower percentage of alcohol which is also conducive to being a great wine to pair with food. The really terrific thing to note about Lambrusco is that you will be hard pressed to ever find one more expensive than $20.00 and many are $8.00-$10.00.  Wow that works in this economy for my pocket-book.Many bottles will list the Lambrusco grape variety from which it has been produced.  I’m not going to bore you with the 13-17 different Lambrusco grape varietals because there are only a handful you need to know.  Here is the short list; The most commonly found clones are the Grasparossa, Maestri, Marani, Monstericco, Salamino and Sorbara.  The rabid Lambrusco lovers, they love the Sobara version but any of these are ones that you want.  If you want to dig in a little deeper here is a link from my friends in Italy and their site which is solely devoted to Lambrusco; http://www.lambruscoday.org/facts-or-fiction.htmlHere’s what you should expect from a good Lambrusco; fresh, fruity, dry, tannic, nice acid, beautiful fruity nose, frothy, nutty, grapy, jammy, fun, and refreshing.  All this and it’s inexpensive too, really what more could you want?  This is a great wine to try that I whole heartedly recommend with all of my love and passion.  “Mikey likes it”, remember Mikey on TV?  I do if I had a penny for every time I’ve heard this in my life I’d be a wealthy man driving the Ferrari and drinking my dry frizzante Lambrusco on my way to get my fresh sliced hunk of Parmigiano-Reggiano to have with my Lambrusco. This particular Lambrusco is a fantastic example of just how special Lambrusco can be. The Cleto Chiarli E Figli is made from Grasparossa and Sorbara grapes resulting in an intense red Lambrusco with a delightful fruity bouquet.  This Lambrusco is produced in the heart of the best Sorbara Lambrusco region. My recommendation for the perfect pairing; if you haven’t had the pleasure of Lambrusco and pizza get on the phone now and order the pizza.  This Italian Lambrusco and pizza, well you will think you have died and gone to heaven.  Enough said…Visit www.WineGuyMike.com to learn more, please subscribe to my blog an newsletter while visiting my site so you get my weekly updates. From my table to yours,
