Sugars and Oxidative Stress More kids than ever are presenting with psychological problems. (2:00) Vinnie mentions Robyn Dobbins, who openly shares how diet has improved her mental health symptoms. People are feeding their brains improperly. (4:30) There have been decades of misinformation, so treatment has been off. Everyone deserves the correct information upfront rather than having to go through multiple medications. (7:00) Georgia goes through her personal history and how she stumbled onto dietary health changes. Sweeteners have many side effects. (16:00) Sugar is the only addictive substance that society sanctions for children. (20:00) It is not only addictive, but it is also physically damaging to the brain because it creates oxidative stress in the brain. (24:00) Refined flours do the same by causing a glycogen load; as a result, your insulin is raised longer. (25:00) Most people are metabolically broken, so sugars and carbs are even more harmful. If your body "needs" sugar, your body will make it. Fats and proteins are essential, but carbs are not. (31:00) The FDA recommends a bunch of nonsense. And now our gut health is a topic that needs to be paid attention to. Better Mental Health Vinnie knows people whose adult kids are still having issues, but refuse to believe that diet can help. (38:00) Georgia always uses dietary interventions first, and she has found them to be the most effective for her clients (41:00) There are certain foods the brain needs. It's not just junk food that hurts, but also foods we've been told are healthy that aren't (like whole grains). Dr. Ede's book Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind addresses dietary therapy as a first step. (45:00) They discuss many different things that have been happening in the news, which are examples of declining mental health. (48:00) Vinnie asks how you get more N=1 cases on the books to demonstrate the advantages of diet and mental health. Changing your diet is a change for the better. You can find Dr. Ede at https://diagnosisdiet.com. You can also find a clinician's directory on her website. Another resource is the Charlie Foundation: https://charliefoundation.org The keto diet is safe, but there is still a transition, especially if you are on medication. We get into her deeply personal journey - from a traumatic pregnancy and serious health challenges to building one of the most innovative wellness brands in the world. We talk cold laser technology, aging without fear, motherhood, boundaries, and why investing in yourself isn't vanity - it's survival. This conversation completely shifted how I think about beauty, healing, and what it really means to look (and feel) your best.Produced by Dear Media.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
*This episode originally aired in 2017. I made a new intro/ reaction to it. It's my first conversation ever with my now very dear friend. Look out for an updated conversation between us next week. January 2017Today's conversation is one of the rare occasions where I make a friend live on the podcast. This conversation exceeded my expectation of what Christine would be like live. She was every bit as thoughtful, earnest, and wise as she comes off in the hundreds of YouTube videos she's published. Christine went to film school and simultaneously began on YouTube when she was just 18 and has been uploading to her chanel ever since. Her videos range from home decor to film photography to make-up to design to music. We get into everything from a cultivating a career as a freelancer to recovering after a tough breakup to handling aging and body image and finding a community. We also talk about style, religion, family, travel and more. I loved meeting her and having this meandering conversation which I think you'll love too. For someone who's done a lot of horror movies, Rebecca Hall admits she's a bit squeamish. That, however, didn't stop her from taking on a role in the newest body horror series, The Beauty, which is set to premiere January 21st on FX.Rebecca first learned of the series when she grabbed breakfast at Buvette in the West Village with Ryan Murphy (who created the show Matthew Hodgson) who enticed her with three things: a fun premise (an STD that makes you so hot that you explode, sign Rebecca up!), great clothes (The Row to be specific, and who could say no to that?) plus a list of fabulous filming locations: Rome, Paris, and Venice all making the list.“He [Ryan] was very open to me. One of the joys for me of this job was that not many people asked me to just be myself for a character.” Rebecca told Senior Features Editor Marley Marius and Fashion Writer Hannah Jackson on Wednesday afternoon. This openness and collaborative spirit Ryan gives to his actors is what enticed Rebecca about working with him again on his series Monster, where she will play Lizzie Borden in which she called “entering her villain era” which was a lot of fun for her. When Rebecca is not on the job, she finds great joy in painting (many of her works have been either sold or exhibited), watching The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (for which her husband is getting around to understanding), and dressing up in “crazy outfits” in her day-to-day quiet upstate life.Earlier in the episode, Chioma fills Chloe in about the behind-the-scenes of the new fabulous British Vogue cover with Jessie Buckley. They also chat what they are looking forward to about awards season and give a farewell to Will Welch who announced he is departing from GQ earlier this week. Vinnie's workout videos, group calls, and supportive community are waiting for you, FREE to all members who join! What is the biggest mistake people tend to make going into a new workout routine? (3:30) People tend to quit going to the gym after only two weeks or so after signing up. They use excuses even though they feel better while exercising. DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness) is another reason people stop. (10:00) This feeling will happen less and less as you become more consistent and stronger. Start where you are and work up—you don't need to go hard right away. (15:00) Don't be intimidated by others and where they are in their journey. You don't have to go to a gym all the time. If you don't have time for the gym, try some body-weight exercises. (22:30) When to eat protein and how much? (32:00) In general: 120-150g per day for average-height men, for average-height women, 85g-120g per day. (32:00) It's OK if you go a little over on some days. Eating something in the morning boosts your metabolism. However, it doesn't take much. What about sleep and recovery? (36:00) How to become disciplined? (39:00) A lot of it is attitude, and your attitude can change. How do you know when you are doing enough, especially when you hit a "plateau"? (45:00) When exercising, plateaus happen when you don't change enough. Changing up the muscle stimulation will help. They discuss a "starting strength workout." We unpack why so many popular diets fail, how to actually find satiety, and what human cultures around the world reveal about the link between plant-based diets and longevity (it's not what you think). Brian also exposes the truth about seed oils, cholesterol, and why his health markers improved when he embraced a more animal-based approach. If you're overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice, this episode will help you finally make sense of it all. Topics Discussed: → Why are ultra-processed foods making us sick and hungry all the time? → Do plant-based diets really lead to longevity? → What do hunter-gatherer diets reveal about the best human diet? → How do harmful industrial oils stack up to traditional fats like olive oil and tallow? → Is cholesterol actually bad for you? In this episode of the Friends in Beauty Podcast, I am sharing the simple but powerful decision that completely changed the type of clients I attract and the way I experience my beauty business. As I kick off the first episode of 2026, I reflect on what truly shifted my career. It was not more content, more hustle, or more trends. It was the decision to stop talking to everyone and get clear on who I actually wanted to serve. Once I made that choice, everything began to change. My positioning became clearer, my boundaries became stronger, and the clients who came into my world were aligned, respectful, and willing to pay my rates. In this episode, I walk you through why clarity creates confidence, how positioning affects your pricing, and why defining your ideal client helps you attract high paying and high quality clients. I also share how content, language, and visibility naturally fall into place once you are clear on who you are speaking to.If you have been feeling scattered, underpaid, or unsure about your next move, this episode will help you step into 2026 with focus, confidence, and intention.

On this podcast, I am committed to helping listeners (and myself) understand beauty in its truest, most life-giving sense. And that is why I am so excited to start the new year with David Taylor as today's guest.David Taylor is a theologian, author, speaker, priest, and director of initiatives in art and faith. As Associate Professor of Theology & Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary, he has lectured widely on the arts, from Thailand to South Africa. He has also written for The Washington Post, Image Journal, Theology Today, Worship, Religion News Service, and Christianity Today, among others. Additionally, in 2016 he produced a short film with Bono and Eugene Peterson, entitled Bono and Eugene Peterson: THE PSALMS.In today's episode, David not only gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his class on beauty at Fuller Seminary, but also shares his own Biblically grounded understanding of what true beauty is. David also uncovers lies about beauty he sees at work in Western society, discusses how we might navigate aging in a broken world, and helps us see how we can know God in and through the arts. My hope is that this conversation will leave you feeling deeply encouraged, as you are reminded that true beauty is alive and at work in the world.David's latest book: Naming the Spirit: Pneumatology Through the Arts Buy Melissa L. From 1885 to 1908, King Leopold II of Belgium owned the Congo as his own personal colony. What transpired there over the course of his reign has credibly been called "the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience." Forced labor, slavery, disease, destruction, and destabliziation led to millions of deaths in one of the lesser known mass trauma events in human history. This is the story of the Congo Free State in Central Africa. This episode is Part 1 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at the origins of humanity in Africa, the Congo as a geographic and human region, the Congo River, the development of agriculture, slavery, and society in the Congo before European arrival, the Indian Ocean Slave Trade vs. the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, the arrival of the Portuguese in the Congo, the motivations for African Imperialism, the intensification of the slave trade as a result of European arrival, the resulting disruption and destabilization, and more. Future episodes will discuss Leopold's acquisition of the Congo as a colony, the resulting atrocities, resistance and reform movements, and the full story of the Congo Free State. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! In this episode, we perceive beauty from the lens of a man in love, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 152, penned by Paranar. The verse is situated amidst the orchards and peaks of the ‘Kurinji’ or ‘Mountain landscape’ and presents a glimpse of history through its mention of prominent people and places. In this long trip through the mountains, we travel to many different regions in ancient Tamil land, as we listen to these words said by the man, after his tryst with the lady: “After coming here to end the deep suffering that makes my heart quiver, she parts away to her little hamlet, amidst the hills. Her thick and curly tresses, worn as a five-part braid, are akin to the feathers of a dancing peacock in the slopes of Paazhi, situated amidst the picturesque mountain ranges, in the domain of Nannan, clad in sandalwood garlands, the leader of ‘Paaram', renowned for his immense charity of rendering elephants with joy on supplicants, and his victorious spear, which crossed the battlefront and won over Pindan, swarming around him, with a deep enmity, akin to small, white shrimps that attacks, destroying fine ships, bringing great wealth in the huge shores of Kaanaalam, near the roaring expanse of the seas, ruled by ‘Thithan Veliyan', possessing a huge, furious army, and having the great fame of rendering his patronage to bards holding intricate rods. As for her arms, they waft with the scent of the divine flame lily, blooming to be fed upon by bees, and the scent of many other beautiful flowers flourishing in the mountain orchards of the great lord Nalli, who wields an army of young men, skilled in archery. Indeed, those arms are akin to the slender and smooth stems between nodes of bamboos, flourishing in the forests amidst the tall mountains of 'Thalaiyaaru', ruled by Aay, possessing huge elephants, known for his copious rendering of fine cooked rice, making bowls of supplicants, who seek him, brim over, whether they possess great abilities or whether they don't. Those tresses and arms of hers, even though they be far, render a quivering suffering in me!” Time to explore ancient places and rendezvous with rulers to understand the song in the man’s heart! He starts by talking about how the lady had come to allay his yearning to be with her and had now parted away to her village in the hills. He then goes on to talk about the lady’s tresses. To put it in a nutshell, he says these thick and curly locks are very much like the feathers of a peacock in ‘Paazhi’, a mountainous region ruled by ‘Nannan’, with his capital at Paaram. Though that’s the destination, there are many outer roads that lead here. For instance, the man talks about the swarming shrimps surrounding the wealth-laden ships arriving at the harbour of ‘Kaanalam’, ruled by Thithan Veliyan. This mention of swarming shrimps is made to place in parallel the way Nannan surrounded the army of Pindan and scored a resounding victory over him. That’s the road that leads to Nannan’s slopes and the dancing peacocks, summoned in parallel to the lady’s exquisite tresses. Next, the man’s mind turns to the lady’s slender arms and these are said to waft with the scent of flame-lilies and other beautiful flowers blooming in the mountain orchards of ‘Nalli’. Not only that, those arms are akin to the smooth spaces between the nodes of bamboos in the hills of ‘Thalaiyaaru’, ruled by ‘Aay’. Thus, five different kings have been called to the court of the man’s mind, to depict the beauty of his beloved. The man mentions the fame of each of these kings, such as Nannan’s generosity of showering elephants, Thithan’s greatness in rendering his patronage to bards, Nalli’s army of men with skilful bows, and Aay’s charity of making the bowls of his supplicants brim over with rice, regardless of their talent. He concludes by saying how those tresses and arms of the lady torment him, even when they have parted away and gone afar! It’s just a man musing on his beloved and feeling the pain of being apart from her, but this poet weaves the beauty of a nameless person with the history of the prominent and renders a crash course on connecting the disparate with creativity!

His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. — Lamentations 3:22–23 One of the most comforting things I have come to cherish is the rhythm of mornings. No matter how chaotic or discouraging the previous day was, the sun still rises each morning. It's as if God painted a daily reminder across the sky: You can start again. During a difficult season, I struggled with feeling that I had blown too many chances. I remember sitting in silence one early morning, feeling heavy with regret. Then this passage from Lamentations came to mind: “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Not just once or twice, but every morning. That promise became a lifeline for me. God doesn't recycle old grace. He gives fresh mercy for each day's needs. Even when we feel stuck, consumed, or too far gone, God shows up with compassion that never runs dry. You may not be able to erase what happened yesterday, but you can begin again today. Let God's faithful love reset your heart. It's not too late to take a deep breath and step forward into the life story he's still writing for you. Lord, thank you for your daily mercy. When I feel like I've messed up too much, remind me of your faithfulness. Help me to embrace each day as a fresh start. Amen.

Live Work with Madeleine I'm Helpless! Part 2 of 3 Today, we are pleased to present the exciting conclusion of our work with Madeleine, a loving mother who fears that her eldest daughter might be in mortal danger during her year abroad. Last week, you heard about the T = Testing and E = Empathy phase of the live work with Madeleine, a mother feeling intense panic and helplessness and inadequacy because she fears that her daughter could be in grave danger of abduction and worse. This week, we will focus on A = Paradoxical Agenda Setting, using the Miracle Cure Question, Magic Button, Positive Reframing, and Magic Dial to see if we can melt away her resistance to change. You can see the Emotions table of the Daily Mood Log Madeleine during the Magic Dial portion of the session if you Click Here As you can see, she wanted to reduce her negative feelings somewhat, but thought she still wanted to keep them fairly elevated, since she still sensed that her daughter might be in real danger, and clearly did not want to abandon her. This is one of the significant refinements in TEAM CBT. First, we want to bring the patient's resistance to full conscious awareness. Second, we want patients to full grasp that their negative thoughts and feelings do NOT result from some "defect" or "mental disorder," but rather from what is most beautiful and awesome about them as human beings. After the Magic Button, David and Jill went on to the final, M = Methods portion of the TEAM session, using tools such as Identify and Explain the Distortions, the Double Standard Technique, and the Externalization of Voices, with the Acceptance Paradox, the Self-Defense Paradigm, and the CAT (Counter-Attack Technique). We will, of course, do numerous role reversals to see if we can get Madeleine to a "huge" victory over her many distorted thoughts. You can see the Daily Mood Log Madeleine prepared at the end of the session if you Click Here As you can see, the reductions in negative feelings were dramatic, but in several areas (anxiety, inadequacy, frustration and anger), Madeleine's negative feelings were still minimally elevated. That is one of the reasons we decided to schedule an additional session together several weeks later to see if we could intensify Madeleine's responses to her negative thoughts, and hopefully due some Cognitive Flooding to complete her "treatment." At the end of these show notes, you will find an email from Madeleine after the session that includes her end-of-session scores on the BMS and EOTS. You will also see comments submitted by many participants who attended the webinar live. This email below from Madeleine following the session shows her end of session scores on the Brief Mood Survey as well as the Evaluation of Therapy Session at the end of her session with Jill and David. Hi David, Yes, here are my BMS & ETS score totals after the extended session. Please let me know if you have any questions. A relapse prevention session would be nice; however, I hesitate to accept your offer as you all are so busy. Please know that I am practicing the PTs and keeping the NTs in check for now. Thank you again a million times over

Kaila Yu lived many lives before she decided to write a memoir. As an actress, musician, and import model, Kaila learned firsthand about all the ways it is challenging to be Asian American, particularly as a woman. But she didn't write about that experience until seeing her fellow Asian Americans attacked and vilified in 2020. Now a travel, food and culture writer, she has released a memoir titled Fetishized: A Reckoning with Yellow Fever, Feminism, and Beauty. In this book of essays, Kaila challenges the pressures Asian American women face to perform for the white male gaze and details some of the history surrounding that social pressure. With Fetishized, Kaila is shining a bright light on a specific prejudice in our country and I am excited to amplify that light with our conversation today.
