In this solo episode, Dr. Joy Kong breaks down the 5 biggest mistakes patients make when undergoing stem cell therapy—and how to avoid them to get the most out of your investment. Learn why using your own cells may not be ideal, the dangers of over-expanded lab-grown cells (especially from overseas clinics), and how lifestyle habits like overexertion, alcohol, and poor diet can sabotage your results. If you're considering regenerative therapy, this is essential listening for safer, more effective outcomes.Additional Resources:Visit My Clinic: Chara Health

In today's episode, I share my personal experience with stem cell therapy—and the unexpected lessons that came from being forced to slow down. Whether you're choosing a procedure like stem cell therapy or suddenly dealing with an injury or illness, time off from your normal routine isn't just inconvenient — it's a major mental and physical shift. But it doesn't have to be a setback. In this episode, I unpack the power of reframing your downtime with three key focus areas: Mindset, Movement, and Meaningful redirection. Why I opted for Stem Cell Therapy Knee inflammation. As a medical exercise specialist and a strength & conditioning coach, if we have a knee issue, the first places to look are the hip mobility, glute strength and hamstring strength. I chose to do a stem cell therapy NOW before the degeneration of the tissues got worse. Nothing you do with soft tissue will help your hard tissue or bone structure regenerate. If there's an opportunity to regenerate, it occurs when you're healthiest, not when more damage is done. MINDSET Detaching identity from physically active and physically capable Dealing with “rest guilt” “You will regret doing too much. You won't regret doing less.” Flipping frustration into self-awareness What I did: travel to a baby shower Accept the pace change without resentment. MOVEMENT Moving smarter not harder. Do what I am able to do (core activation) and how I modified it with no pressure on the knees (e.g. stretching, swimming with a pool buoy, etc). “Some” movement matters more than “perfect” movement. It's better to be undertrained than overtrained. MEANINGFUL REDIRECTION (or Focus Shift) Using the extra time for non-physical growth (sleep, reading a book, collecting recipes, etc.) Business planning, learning, and creative projects. The power of journaling during healing. Making your mandatory time off count long-term. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 6-26-2025: Dr. Dawn opens with groundbreaking results from Vertex Pharmaceuticals' stem cell treatment for severe type 1 diabetes. The experimental therapy, Zimislecel, converts stem cells into pancreatic islet cells and infuses them into patients. In a 12-person study, 10 patients no longer need insulin after one year. The cells migrated to the liver and began producing insulin in response to glucose levels. Patients with hypoglycemic unawareness saw complete elimination of dangerous episodes after three months. However, patients must take lifelong immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection. The research represents 25 years of work by Harvard's Doug Melton. A caller asks about Keytruda treatment for melanoma. Dr. Dawn explains it's an immunotherapy drug targeting programmed death receptors that cancer cells hijack to evade immune response. The drug can cause serious immune overreactions but is standard for metastatic melanoma. Treatment protocols depend on cancer staging. For young patients with decades to lose, aggressive treatment is often justified despite risks. An email about morning arthritis pain leads to chronotherapy research discussion. Macrophages have energy levels that peak in the morning when inflammasome activation is quicker and more robust, explaining why arthritis pain is worst after overnight rest. Treatment timing could optimize anti-inflammatory medications by taking them at bedtime. Another email about eye irritation prompts diagnostic discussion. Dr. Dawn recommends examining for bacterial blepharitis before assuming food allergies and testing antihistamine drops. For elimination diets, common allergens include wheat, dairy, corn, soy, and peanuts. However, without other symptoms, food allergies are unlikely causes of isolated eye problems. Dr. Dawn explores advancing CAR-T cell therapy using RNA technology. Traditional therapy costs up to $500,000 per patient requiring lab reprogramming. New RNA-containing nanoparticles temporarily create antigen receptors for about one week. Mouse studies eliminated detectable tumors at highest doses. While effects are temporary, this could dramatically reduce costs and complexity. She discusses DNA forensics evolution from O.J. trial era to current technologies. New paleogenomics technology can analyze fragmented DNA from hair, previously considered unusable. Mitochondrial DNA analysis can definitively exonerate suspects. This led to Charles Fane's release after 17 years on death row when hair evidence proved innocence and identified the actual perpetrator. Dr. Dawn introduces Barrett's esophagus screening replacing invasive endoscopy. Patients swallow a capsule containing a compressed sponge that expands in the stomach and is pulled out via string, collecting esophageal cells. The test identifies abnormalities with 100-fold increased cancer risk when positive and 98% accuracy when negative, allowing targeted endoscopy only for high-risk patients. She concludes discussing body composition analysis superiority over BMI. Studies found overweight BMI showed 3.6 times higher heart disease risk, while large waist circumference showed four times higher risk. However, BMI had no significant relationship with overall mortality. Dr. Dawn advocates for bioimpedance analysis devices to measure body fat percentage and track muscle loss.

Dr. Kilian Kelly, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Cynata Therapeutics, has taken on the challenge of manufacturing stem cell therapies consistently and at scale in order to drive the advancements necessary for the next generation of regenerative medicine. Cynata is employing a novel approach that utilizes a single source of pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and mesenchymal cell ancestors (MCAs) to generate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Lead programs are targeting graft-versus-host disease, osteoarthritis, and diabetic wounds, where clinical trials have shown great promise to treat these and other diseases. Kilian explains, "We're a stem cell regenerative medicine company, and what we're trying to do is to change the way that we can manufacture stem cell therapies in a consistent and scalable way. I'm sure many of your listeners have heard about stem cell therapies of various types. The particular type of cells that we're working on are called mesenchymal stem cells or MSCs. They've shown lots of promise for lots of different purposes, but a real challenge has been making these cells consistently, especially when you try to do that at a large scale. We have a unique novel manufacturing platform, which helps us to address that major challenge." "The way that these cells were historically produced and indeed still are produced in most cases is by harvesting cells from, for example, somebody donating bone marrow or adipose tissue, also known as fat. And those approaches have certainly allowed a lot of early-stage clinical trials to be performed, which showed lots of really exciting results. But often what happens is that when you move to a larger scale using such a process, and you try to make much larger quantities of cells, perhaps using many different donors, you start to see a lot of inconsistency. There are a few reasons for this. When you have inconsistency with a product, it's inevitable that you're going to get inconsistent results." "If you have inconsistent results in a clinical trial, it becomes a bit of a lottery, and sometimes you can have very disappointing results that are hard to explain. So we think that's been a really big issue that has caused a lot of problems in the field. And aside from the impact on clinical trial results, we also need to think about the future when these products are available and on the market, and how you can actually, in practical terms, produce enough of these products. So, in a nutshell, I think that is probably the major challenge that the field has faced." #CynataTherapeutics #StemCellTherapy #RegenerativeMedicine #iPSCs #MSCs #MCAs Cynata.com Download the transcript here

Today, Tash and Shannon sit down with Dr. Eric Weiss—a father, a physician, and a passionate advocate for innovation in autism care. Dr. Weiss shares his deeply personal journey raising a child with autism and how it led him to shift from a career in plastic surgery to exploring emerging autism research. In this episode, we discuss the potential of stem cell therapy to address brain inflammation, success stories from his practice, and the challenges faced in gaining broader acceptance within the medical community. As a podcast rooted in lived experience and intentional advocacy, we know conversations about evolving science—especially around topics like maternal health, inflammation, and treatment—can be layered and sensitive. These themes have long histories and complex impacts within the autism community. Our goal is not to take a stance on specific approaches, but to hold space for curiosity and care. We remain grounded in the values that guide every episode: • We reject cure culture and center the well-being of both autistic individuals and their caregivers. • We believe in thoughtful inquiry—approached through a lens of inclusion, respect, and critical thought. • And above all, we honor the uniqueness of every journey. This episode may spark reflection, dialogue, or questions—and that's something we welcome. In solidarity ❤️
