If you become obsessed with results, pressure can build quickly. You can lose focus, force things, and start worrying more about the future than what needs to happen right now.But I also believe something important gets missed when people say that.You need something to shoot for.You need vision.You need purpose.You need a target that inspires you to get out of bed in the morning and keep moving forward when things become difficult.When I was part of the New York Rangers, we absolutely thought about the outcome. From the first day of training camp, the goal was clear. We wanted to win the Stanley Cup.That vision mattered.It created belief inside the locker room. It gave players direction. It unified the team around a common purpose. Nobody walked into that season hoping to simply “see what happens.” We believed we could accomplish something special.But here is the key.After setting the goal, we put it aside.We did not wake up every day talking about lifting the Stanley Cup. We focused on what needed to happen that day. Practice. Conditioning. Recovery. Communication. Accountability. Film sessions. Competing in drills. Supporting teammates. Managing emotions. Preparing mentally and physically.The outcome gave us direction.The process gave us progress.That lesson applies to every part of life.So many people today either become obsessed with the result or they lose motivation because the result feels too far away. They focus so much on the future that they stop being present in the daily work that actually creates success.Championships are not built in one moment.Confidence is not built in one moment.Transformation is not built in one moment.It happens through consistent daily action.One workout at a time.One healthy decision at a time.One conversation at a time.One practice at a time.One choice at a time.The people who perform at a high level understand how to stay present while still keeping a larger vision in mind. They know how to separate goals from daily execution.That is where mindset becomes so important.Pressure often comes from living too far ahead mentally. You start worrying about whether you will succeed, fail, impress people, make money, win the championship, recover from adversity, or achieve your goals.Meanwhile, your power only exists in the present moment.The best athletes and performers are able to bring themselves back to the task directly in front of them.The next shift.The next meeting.The next rep.The next opportunity.That does not mean the goal disappears. The vision remains in the background as fuel and motivation. But your focus stays connected to preparation and execution.This is something I have seen repeatedly, both in sports and in life.The people who grow the most are usually the people who commit to the process without constantly needing immediate results. They trust the work. They understand that progress takes time. They know there will be setbacks, adversity, frustration, and moments where things do not go according to plan.But they continue showing up anyway.That is where real confidence comes from.Confidence is not just positive thinking. Confidence is built through preparation, repetition, resilience, and learning how to stay steady under pressure.Even during difficult moments on our Stanley Cup team, we did not panic and suddenly abandon the process. We trusted our preparation. We trusted each other. We trusted the work we had already put in.That mindset matters everywhere.In business, people often focus so much on the final goal that they burn themselves out chasing quick results.In health and fitness, people become discouraged because they do not see changes fast enough.In parenting, athletes, leadership, and personal growth, people sometimes expect overnight transformation.But meaningful growth rarely happens overnight.The process is where growth lives.The process teaches discipline.The process teaches patience.The process teaches resilience.The process teaches presence.And many times, when you fully commit yourself to the daily process, the outcome begins to take care of itself.That does not mean every goal will happen exactly the way you imagined. Life does not always work that way. Every so often, I like to revisit episodes that made a profound impact on me personally and delivered tremendous value to listeners, and this conversation with Thais Gibson is absolutely one of those episodes. I am so pleased to introduce a fantastically awesome show with Thais Gibson, creator of the Personal Development School! When Thais first sent me an overview of what she wanted to discuss, I thought, "Sure, let's talk about it." But I have to tell you, I was completely blown away. This became one of my favorite shows I have ever recorded. Listeners, I truly believe this episode has the potential to be life-changing. I know it was for me. It probably helped that I unknowingly became the guinea pig for much of the conversation. What you'll hear is essentially a live coaching session where Thais demonstrates her expertise and methods using real-life examples from my own experiences—particularly the disconnect between my stated goals and some of my behavior patterns. We focused on the pursuit of wealth and financial security, an area where I occasionally feel frustrated or deficient, perhaps because of subconscious patterns operating beneath the surface. Thais explains the causes of self-sabotage and how to reprogram limiting thought patterns. One of the most fascinating parts of the discussion is when she explains that we're operating from our conscious mind only about three to five percent of the time. If you're someone who listens to podcasts, reads books, and continually educates yourself, your conscious mind may be doing a great job acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to succeed. But your subconscious needs and programming can still interfere and pull you off course. So in this episode, it's time for Brad to get processed, dig deep, and explore what's really happening when self-sabotage kicks in. Thais Gibson is a counselor, bestselling author of Learning Love, and co-founder of the Personal Development School. She holds a Ph.D. and more than 13 certifications in modalities including CBT, NLP, somatic experiencing, Internal Family Systems, shadow work, and hypnosis. TIMESTAMPS: People may not always be aware that they are self-sabotaging because it usually occurs at a subconscious level. [00:53] Your conscious mind is responsible for roughly 3 to 5 percent of all of your beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and actions or decisions. Your subconscious is responsible for 95 to 97 percent. [04:48] We all have subconscious personality needs. [07:54] Thais uses Brad as an example to unpack what needs it relates to. She asks first, what does he do in his spare time? [09:34] Where does he spend his money? What does he like to learn about? [12:10] Our subconscious mind is also the host of all of our limiting beliefs. [19:46] There is a tool for how to pull up what your limiting beliefs are. [21:42] We're scared of something that's hidden in the periphery at a subconscious level of mind [24:29] Reconditioning is a tool for reprogramming. [26:25] Thais identifies characteristics of people who have been in a relationship with a narcissist. [30:41] Look for the things that trigger you. Plan your limiting belief and use its opposite. [33:02] Step one: What is your core belief and its opposite? Step two: what are 10 memories to support? They can be recent memories, really old memories, doesn't matter. 10 memories to support this new idea about yourself. I am, in fact, good enough. Step three: listen back for 21 days. [34:17] When thinking about financial security, many people struggle with their subconscious as in feeling they don’t deserve it or some parts of society that have a distaste for the inequitable distribution of wealth. [43:10] There are seven areas of life that need attention. Career, financial, mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and relationship. To ignore one area, we will pay for it later. [52:45] What specific things or set of things are you going to do on a daily basis to reprogram? Key Learnings   Stay light. Bill Murray told ballplayers that if you stay light, loose, and relaxed, you can play at the highest level. Same with acting, writing, anything. Austin keeps a photo of Bill in his studio as a reminder. Play is the work. A lot of Austin's best work requires a sense of play. It's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Go to the analog desk first. Austin has a digital desk and an analog desk. Nothing electronic is allowed at the analog desk. He starts there with nothing and sees what comes. Most people never give themselves the time, space, and materials to make something of what's swirling inside them.  People want to watch someone who is activated. "People will pay every night to show up and see somebody believe in themselves." (Kim Gordon, Sonic Youth) The market for something to believe in is infinite. (Hugh MacLeod) The world is full of people just doing their thing. They're hungry to see someone on fire for something. The writer's job: take what everyone is thinking and put it into words. "You gave me the words" is the highest compliment a reader can give. Effortless is earned. People say the Friday newsletter looks easy. Austin's reply: Do it every Friday for 13 years, then call me. A place to put things makes you notice more. Thoreau took morning walks knowing he'd write later, so he paid closer attention. Carry a camera, and you start seeing shots everywhere. Live for the living, not for the writing. There's a tension between living your life and documenting it. Don't lose yourself to the feed. Your attention is the most valuable thing you have. Everyone wants to take it. The real challenge of modern life is making sure you're the one who decides where it goes. The best teachers are perpetual students. You realize what you know and don't know only when you try to teach it. Toggle between knowing and not knowing. The moment you think you know what you're doing, the work gets stale. You start running on routine instead of need. To be an amateur is to be a lover. The French root means "lover of." An amateur does it out of love, not material reward. Every great CEO should be put in a room with a four-year-old. They'd both learn something. Kids knock the pompous certainty right out of you. "I don't know. How do you think we should figure it out?" Austin's kids taught him it's less important to know everything than to know how to find out. The leader isn't the one who speaks while everyone listens. The leader listens, asks questions, stays curious, and wonders how everyone is doing. Look for who's having fun, not who's successful. Fun is underrated. Serious people have a serious time. Do it with lightness and it's contagious. "A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play." (Lawrence Pearsall Jacks) He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he's doing and leaves others to decide whether he's working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both. Ask "What does the universe want to show me today?" A useful fiction. Tell yourself the world is trying to send you messages and suddenly you see a hundred of them. Have the toy before you know what you'll do with it. Austin buys typewriters, then asks what to make. Get the bicycle first. In six months you'll know what kind you actually want. Steal an idea someone only did once and turn it into a whole thing. Austin saw a single typewriter interview, made it a series, and has done more than 20. Put the human hand in the work. Austin decided 20 years ago to make it obvious a human made his stuff. In the age of AI, it stands out more than ever. People want the imperfection. Writing is thinking. People think you gather your ideas then write them down. The act of writing is the act of figuring out what you actually think. That's the hard part. Differentiate yourself by reading a book outside your field. Swim a little further out than everyone else and you find new water. Focus on what you can control.
