Mensen ervaren dat ze te weinig rust en ruimte hebben naast hun werk, en dat er te veel stress is op het werk om echt iets gedaan te krijgen. In dit boek borduurt hij daar op verder, met het verschil dat dit boek bedoeld is voor kenniswerkers die meer controle hebben over hun eigen tijd. Een typisch Amerikaans boek, en duidelijke stelling en daarna zoveel mogelijk voorbeelden om te laten zien dat de stelling klopt. In het boek gebruikt Cal enkele bekende personen als voorbeeld zoals Jewel, Alanish Moyeset, Benjamin Franklin. Wat ik mis zijn de voorbeelden van mensen die deze keuzes ook hebben gemaakt, maar niet tot grootse veranderingen zijn gekomen en vooral blij zijn met een rustiger leven, zonder grote verwachtingen. Ik blijf het gevoel houden dat het werk moet bijdragen aan grootse resultaten. Het is een beetje de rode draad achteraf verklaren. Dat je zo gaat werken is geen garantie dat je deze grootse resultaten krijgt. He blijft uiteindelijk gaan om productiviteit. Dat is voor mij niet waarom we als mense bestaan, om productief te zijn. In de geschiedenis hadden we veel meer vrije tijd en deden we vooral wat we nodig hadden om te leven (benoemd Cal ook). Waarom dit nu zo geconcentreerd moet zijn op efficiency, productiviteit is mij een raadsel. Het boek leest lekker weg, en is een interessant boek voor veel kenniswerkers, ondernemers die alleen werken, en op zoek zijn naar een andere manier waarop ze hun doel bereiken, met meer focus en minder afleiding. Wie wil dat nu niet? Al komen de laatste meerdere ondernemers op mijn pad die vooral meer gedaan willen krijgen, de energie en inspiratie wat kwijt zijn. Ze willen minder afleiding (uitstelgedrag) en meer doen wat ze belangrijk vinden. Social media platforms are designed to hijack our brain's reward system, keeping us hooked through endless dopamine hits. This constant stimulation fragments our attention, reshapes our behavior, and can lead to burnout, anxiety, and even addiction—especially in developing brains. The more we scroll, the more we crave quick hits of novelty, making it harder to tolerate boredom or engage in deeper, more meaningful tasks. And while adults may struggle, kids are even more vulnerable, facing emotional dysregulation and long-term brain changes. The good news? Awareness is the first step toward reclaiming agency and creating healthier boundaries in a world built for distraction. Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist, bestselling author, and professor at NYU's Stern School of Business. His research focuses on the moral foundations of culture and politics, exploring why good people are divided by religion, ideology, and values.
