Send us Fan MailOlaf Kock is a returning guest on our show! Be sure to check out his first appearance on episode 796 of Boundless Body Radio!Olaf Kock is working in the software business, currently in technical sales. Ever since finding the ketogenic diet in 2012, he ran a one-month experiment with this way of eating that has never stopped. As a self-described nerd, he found the ketogenic diet in 2012 through a podcast on software security out of pure chance. This experiment has evolved through several flavors since then, but as far as this experiment is concerned, the experiment never ended, and he is still ketogenic to this day!As he often is answering the same questions, he recently built a German-and-English-language website (butterbei.de) to simulate the glucose/insulin relationship, in order to illustrate what happens in the body, and make the otherwise hidden processes visible without the need to wear a continuous glucose monitor. The website has since developed into a source of nutritional information based on his findings that the cause-and-effect typically perceived in nutrition can easily be twisted around.Together with his dog Fiete he lives in Hamburg/Germany, which makes both of them authentic and actual (wait for it) Hamburgers.

Could ketogenic therapy help people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders engage more successfully with CBT? A new conceptual framework explores this powerful adjunctive approach.CBTp is considered a gold-standard treatment for schizophrenia spectrum disorders, but many patients struggle to initiate, participate in, and complete it. Cognitive deficits, sleep disturbances, low distress tolerance, and ongoing psychotic symptoms can all stand in the way. In this conversation, Dr. Bret Scher sits down with licensed clinical social worker Nicole Laurent to discuss her recently published paper in Frontiers in Psychology, exploring how ketogenic metabolic therapy could help bridge that gap.In this conversation, you'll learn:Why CBTp is so cognitively demanding and where patients tend to struggleHow ketogenic therapy may reduce key barriers like sleep issues, distress tolerance, and cognitive impairmentWhat a conceptual analysis paper is and why it matters for shaping future researchHow clinicians and researchers can begin integrating these ideas into practiceWhether this framework could extend to CBT for depression, OCD, and anxietyThis discussion opens the door to thinking about ketogenic therapy not only as a direct treatment for psychiatric symptoms, but as a powerful adjunctive tool that could help patients engage more fully with the rest of their care.
#319 Last week I saw a patient who had been on a low FODMAP diet for 12 years. Self-prescribed. No reintroduction. No professional guidance. His story is far more common than most people realise — and it's exactly why I recorded this episode. Low FODMAP, keto, and carnivore diets all have legitimate therapeutic applications. But when they're self-prescribed, followed indefinitely, and used without ever investigating the underlying cause of symptoms, they can cause their own harm — quietly, progressively, and in ways that are very difficult to reverse. In this episode, I'm drawing on my extensive experience working with constipation and gut health to talk specifically about what these diets do to your bowel — the microbiome changes, the impact on butyrate and serotonin production, the loss of mechanical stimulation, and why constipation is one of the most commonly reported and least discussed consequences of long-term dietary restriction. I also cover the conditions — including SIBO, where a low FODMAP approach may be appropriate for longer than the standard timeframe, and why even in those cases, reintroduction is always the goal. If you feel better on a restricted diet but can't seem to reintroduce foods without your symptoms returning, this episode will help you understand why — and what to do about it. In this episode: What Monash University actually says about how long the low FODMAP diet should be followed Why prolonged FODMAP restriction affects Bifidobacteria, butyrate production, and bowel function What the research shows about the ketogenic diet, microbiome diversity, fibre intake, and constipation The latest evidence on the carnivore diet — including a 2026 cross-sectional study and 2025 scoping review Why symptom relief on a restricted diet is the beginning of the investigation, not the end of it A clear path forward for anyone stuck in a cycle of restriction with no resolution in sight Resources mentioned: Get Things Moving — Evidence-based guide to overcoming constipation: Book a consultation BetterMe Tea Lynda Griparic is a degree-qualified naturopath and certified Healthy Gut Practitioner with extensive experience in constipation, SIBO, and gut microbiome health. Then they dive into ketogenic diets, discussing possible brain and energy benefits while also explaining why nutrition should always be personalized. The episode finishes with a powerful conversation about the fear of gaining weight back after losing it. Psychiatric medication tapering* is becoming one of the most important and controversial conversations in mental health care.In the wake of the American Psychiatric Association Annual Conference, Dr. Bret Scher explores the growing debate around psychiatric medication “deprescribing,” responsible tapering, overprescription, and the urgent need for better research and clinician guidance. This discussion examines the real clinical questions:When should psychiatric medications be reassessed? How should tapering be approached safely? How do we distinguish withdrawal symptoms from relapse? Why is there still so little research on tapering protocols? What role could metabolic psychiatry and ketogenic therapy play in supporting brain health during treatment?Dr. Scher also discusses why every psychiatric prescription should include an ongoing plan for reassessment, not just indefinite continuation by default.Importantly, this video does NOT encourage anyone to stop psychiatric medications on their own. Decisions about medication changes should always be made carefully with a qualified healthcare provider.
If what you used to do to lose weight worked in the past but no longer fits your schedule or lifestyle, you're not alone. In today's episode, I'm joined by Madeleine from the Hot & Healthy Membership to talk about how she transitioned away from very low-carb dieting and keto toward a more balanced, sustainable approach to fat loss that actually fit her real life. Like many women, Madeleine believed being more restriction would lead to better results. But over time, trying to maintain keto while working intense hours as a pharmacist in her residency program became unrealistic and exhausting. Keto worked for her — until it didn't. She wanted a way to lose fat, feel confident in her body, and still enjoy eating out and spending time with friends without constantly feeling restricted. In this episode, Madeleine shares how she slowly reintroduced carbs despite being afraid to at first, how she shifted her focus from just losing weight on the scale to body recomposition, and the habits that helped her become leaner, stronger, and more confident than ever before. If you've ever wondered whether you can lose fat without cutting out entire food groups and carbs, this episode will show you exactly what's possible and how to do it, too. Matt helps unpack why protein has become such a focal point, how to interpret the current evidence, and what outcomes actually matter when we're talking about intake and health. They explore the long-standing protein RDA and what it was designed to represent. The discussion then moves into protein quality, addressing common claims around plant versus animal protein, and why mechanistic research doesn't always align with long-term health outcomes. Matt also provides important context around dietary patterns and chronic disease risk, helping to separate the role of protein itself from the broader way people eat. They finish with a dive into choline, covering its role in the body, how it interacts with other nutrients like folate and betaine, and what this means for people following predominantly plant-based diets. It's a thoughtful, nuanced conversation that cuts through the noise and brings clarity to some of the biggest questions in modern nutrition.Dr Matt Nagra is a naturopathic doctor who graduated from the Boucher Institute after completing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology at the University of Victoria. He holds additional board certifications in prescriptive authority, immunisations, advanced injection therapies, intravenous therapies, and acupuncture. Using an evidence-based approach, he creates individualised treatment protocols tailored to each patient's health goals and lifestyle. He has a particular passion for plant-based and vegan nutrition, physical medicine, and chronic disease treatment. With additional training in nutrition, he holds a Plant-Based Nutrition Certification from Cornell University and the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has also authored multiple articles. His work aims to support individuals in thriving on plant-based diets, while bridging the gap between lifestyle-based interventions and medical care.Choline paper: https://www.academia.edu/3067-1345/2/4/10.20935/AcadNutr8085Instagram: @dr.matthewnagraDr. Nagra's website Curranz Supplement: Use code MIKKIPEDIA to get 20% off your first order - go to www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk to order yours NZ listeners - save 10% off Calocurb by using the code Mikkipedia10 at www.calocurb.co.nzContact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwilliden
Is there really a “Daoist diet”? In this episode of Living the Tao Shorts (2-22), Taoist Master Mikel Steenrod explores one of the most misunderstood subjects in Taoist practice: food restrictions, dietary cultivation, and the purpose behind them. Rather than rigid rules or moral prohibitions, traditional Daoist approaches to diet were often based on observation, experimentation, longevity, and energetic outcome. The discussion explores: The real meaning of the ancient Bigu diet Why some Daoist traditions reduced grain consumption The relationship between food, herbs, and Qi How Daoism historically approached experimentation and fringe practices The influence of Buddhism on later dietary restrictions Why Daoism tends to reject ideology in favor of direct results This is a practical and historically grounded conversation about food, health, and cultivation within the broader Daoist tradition. In this Mini Mikkipedia episode, Mikki explores the concept of metabolic memory—a powerful and often overlooked driver of long-term health. Drawing on landmark studies like DCCT and UKPDS, she explains how periods of poor metabolic health can leave a lasting imprint, continuing to influence disease risk even after markers like blood glucose are brought back under control. But it's not all bad news. Mikki also unpacks the flip side: how positive adaptations from training, nutrition, and metabolic challenges can create a beneficial “memory” that helps the body rebound faster and perform better over time. From epigenetics to mitochondrial function, this episode highlights why timing matters and why early intervention—and consistency—can shape your metabolic future. Highlights: What metabolic memory is and where the concept originated The “legacy effect” in diabetes research and why early control matters Cellular mechanisms: epigenetics, oxidative stress, and AGEs The positive side: training, ketosis, and metabolic flexibility Why your past habits—good or bad—continue to influence your health Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenNZ listeners - save 10% off Calocurb by using the code Mikkipedia10 at www.calocurb.co.nzSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order

Don walks through the historical context behind early guidelines, including where things may have gone off track, particularly around the treatment of fat, cholesterol, and protein-rich foods. From there, the discussion moves into the science. In this Mini Mikkipedia episode, Mikki breaks down one of the most persistent nutrition debates: are high-protein diets actually harmful? Drawing on a recent perspective paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, she unpacks common claims around kidney damage, bone loss, diabetes risk, and reduced longevity. Rather than dismissing concerns outright, Mikki walks through what the research truly shows, highlighting key methodological flaws, the limits of observational data, and the importance of context. From overfeeding studies to real-world dietary patterns, this episode challenges headline-driven narratives and brings nuance back into the conversation. If you've ever questioned whether your protein intake is “too high,” this is a grounded, evidence-informed discussion to help you cut through the noise and make more confident decisions.Highlights: Why the “protein turns to fat” claim doesn't hold up in real-world studies The truth about protein intake and kidney health in healthy individuals How higher protein diets impact bone density and fracture risk The nuance behind protein, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes Why observational data often misleads protein-related health claims Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenNZ listeners - save 10% off Calocurb by using the code Mikkipedia10 at www.calocurb.co.nzSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order
Why do so many people lose weight at first on keto or carnivore… only to eventually stall or even gain weight? In this Friday recap episode, Vanessa breaks down the biggest takeaways from her interview with Craig Emmerich, co-author of The Art of Metabolic Health. She explains why ketosis alone does not guarantee body fat loss, why high dietary fat can prevent the body from tapping into stored fat, and how protein-prioritized keto may be a more effective approach for fat loss and body recomposition. Check out the Protein-Sparing Modified Fasting Library at ketogenicgirl.com and use code VANESSA for 20% off. Vanessa also dives into fuel partitioning, the Randall cycle, personal fat threshold, and why so many people get stuck in "diet islands" after using keto, carnivore, fasting, or low-carb diets to lose weight. She shares her personal experience gaining weight on traditional high-fat keto, then later losing 14 pounds of body fat using alternating protein-sparing modified fasting days and maintenance days. This episode is all about using structure, protein, and metabolic strategy to burn body fat while preserving lean mass. In This Episode Why high-fat keto can stall fat loss The difference between burning dietary fat and stored body fat Why ketosis does not automatically mean fat loss How fuel partitioning affects body composition Why protein is the anchor for recomposition The dieting trap of losing muscle and regaining fat How protein-sparing modified fasting protects lean mass Vanessa's approach: alternating PSMF days with maintenance days Why personal fat threshold matters for metabolic health How to avoid getting stuck in keto, carnivore, or fasting "diet islands" Why body composition matters more than scale weight Resources Mentioned Craig & Maria Emmerich The Art of Metabolic Health IQBAR – Try the Ultimate Sampler Pack: IQBARs, IQMIX, and IQJOE! Will Nitze started IQBAR in 2018 to solve his own problem: long hours, a bad diet, daily brain fog. He designed the formulas for cognition, low net carb, low sugar, low glycemic. What he didn't know was that the rest of America was about to get obsessed with that exact macro profile for a completely different reason: weight loss. When keto took off, IQBAR was one of only three keto-compliant bars on Amazon. That lucky overlap was the first of several step-change moments that took a 15-person team to over 100% compound annual growth for 8 straight years, and into the shelves of Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, and Target. In this episode of Predicting The Turn, Will unpacks why startups beat legacy CPG on speed rather than size, why he runs the entire company with a "benevolent dictator in every division" model instead of bloated marketing teams, and how IQBAR raised a little under $10M across 8 years without a single egregious fundraise. He also breaks down the move from D2C to mass retail, why packaging becomes the billboard when the shelf replaces the digital feed, and how the Bites launch turned into an incrementality test in real time.If you care about how emerging CPG brands actually scale inside Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart without blowing up their cap table, this one is a masterclass.Key Topics- Why IQBAR's brain-health formulation became accidentally keto-compliant- The 15-person "benevolent dictator" operating model- Raising under $10M across 8 years and why bootstrapping isn't a virtue- Working capital reality when you move from Amazon to Walmart and Costco- Why packaging becomes the #1 marketing lever in mass retail- Building a platform brand across bars, hydration, coffee, and Bites- Running incrementality tests to avoid cannibalization- The three step-change moments: keto, Costco, Thomas Keller partnership- Picking a North Star that keeps you fired up in year 8

Why do so many people lose weight on keto… only to stall—or even gain it back? In this episode, Vanessa sits down with Craig Emmerich to break down one of the biggest misconceptions in fat loss: that simply eating high fat will keep the weight coming off. Together, they unpack why high-fat keto can stall fat loss, how fuel partitioning actually works, and what your body is being driven to burn based on your macronutrient intake. As interest grows in alternative approaches to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), like ibogaine and psilocybin-assisted therapy, researchers are also exploring how metabolic interventions may target the underlying biology of psychiatric conditions.Dr. Bret Scher speaks with Nicole Laurent, a licensed therapist and researcher, about a published case report exploring ketogenic metabolic therapy in treatment-resistant PTSD.Together, they break down some of the biology behind PTSD, including brain hypometabolism, oxidative stress, and neurotransmitter imbalances, and how ketogenic therapy may help address these underlying mechanisms. The conversation also explores a powerful real-world case: a woman with nearly two decades of persistent PTSD symptoms who experienced profound improvements after implementing a medically supervised ketogenic approach. In this conversation, you'll also learn:Why metabolism may play a central role in psychiatric conditionsHow ketogenic therapy may support brain energy and neurotransmitter balanceThe importance of clinical supervision, especially when medications are involvedWhy individualized care and self-advocacy matter in emerging treatmentsWhile case reports don't establish causation, they can highlight new directions for research and clinical care, especially for individuals who haven't found relief with standard approaches. As research evolves, metabolic psychiatry is opening new conversations about how we understand and treat mental health conditions. If you or someone you love is living with PTSD, this discussion may offer a new perspective to explore with a qualified healthcare provider.Learn more about ketogenic therapy as an adjunct treatment for PTSD on our blog: Hope for PTSD: The Potential of Ketogenic Metabolic Therapies.
This week, Mikki breaks down one of the most common (and misunderstood) questions in fat loss and health: what should your body fat percentage actually be? Drawing on current research, she explains why body fat isn't just “dead weight” but an active endocrine organ that plays a critical role in metabolism, hormones, and overall health. Mikki unpacks the difference between subcutaneous and visceral fat, why where you store fat matters, and how risk increases at higher levels. She also explores the lack of a universal “ideal” number, highlighting how factors like age, sex, and ethnicity influence healthy ranges. Finally, she cuts through the noise on body composition measurements, from DEXA to BIA, and offers practical guidance on what to focus on instead of chasing a single number. Key Highlights: Why body fat is metabolically active and essential for health The critical difference between subcutaneous and visceral fat Evidence-based body fat ranges for men and women Limitations of common measurement tools like BIA and DEXA Why health is more than just a body fat percentage Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenNZ listeners - save 10% off Calocurb by using the code Mikkipedia10 at www.calocurb.co.nzSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order
