In this episode of the CAA Conversations, Amanda Douberley, Clarissa J. Ceglio, and Alison Paul discuss the William Benton Museum of Art at the University of Connecticut, which brings student perspectives into its galleries and fosters belonging through innovative curricular partnerships. Three recent projects undertaken by classes in UConn's School of Fine Arts produced student-centered interpretive materials for the Benton's exhibitions. Each interactive project connected the museum with the campus community in a different way and cultivated a sense of belonging for both students enrolled in partner courses and student visitors to the Benton. Clarissa J. Ceglio, PhD, is Associate Professor of Digital Humanities, Associate Director of Research, for Greenhouse Studios, and Associate Director of Collaborative Research for UConn's Humanities Institute. Her research focuses on the ways in which museums, past and present, engage diverse communities in issues relevant to individual and civic thriving. She looks, too, at the affective and rhetorical uses of material, visual, and digital artifacts in constructing national and social imaginaries. Through her teaching and research, Ceglio also collaborates with museums, libraries, and communities on interdisciplinary public-facing and grant-funded projects that engage diverse audiences in topics of contemporary concern. Amanda Douberley is Curator & Academic Liaison at the William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut, Storrs. She is responsible for connecting Benton's collections and exhibitions with teaching in departments across the university. She has curated numerous exhibitions at the museum, often in collaboration with faculty and other campus partners. Douberley holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin with a focus on 20th-century American sculpture and public art. Before coming to UConn in 2018, she taught in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Alison Paul is an Associate Professor of Art and Area Coordinator for the Illustration/Animation concentration in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Connecticut. Paul creates illustrations and stop-motion animations using cut paper collage. Her work is fundamentally about storytelling to a variety of audiences. Paul's animations have been shown in film festivals internationally, and her children's books have received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews. She has curated exhibitions at the William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs and the Roots Reading Room in Providence, RI. Professor Paul has taught at UConn since 2011.

Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org. Show Notes What is resilience? Is there a correlation between resilience and the prevalence of suicide in the military? How do you know if you've become resilient? Minutes after leading a session about the topic of resilience during OCF's annual Local Leader Conference held at Spring Canyon earlier this year, Col Tim Hale, USAF (Ret.), sat down with me in the dining hall of Hartley Holmes Lodge to address these questions and others. Raised in a military community near Scott AFB, Tim began his own career in the Air Force after completing Air Force ROTC at St. Louis University. Throughout his decades of service, Tim's command positions at a variety of levels, bolstered by post-retirement experiences as a cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services and as an elder at his church, enabled him to see the importance of resilience firsthand. Tim now resides in Oklahoma, where he serves as OCF's Area Coordinator for Central Oklahoma, Southern Kansas, and Northern Texas. Check out the various resources mentioned throughout this episode “March or die”: Turning to Christ & community in times of trauma, OCF Crosspoint episode with Jeremy Stalnecker that focuses on topics related to today's episode with Tim Path to Resiliency by Chad Robichaux, Jeremy Stalnecker, and John Mizerak (foreword by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.)) Days of Anguish, Days of Hope by Bill Keith The Resilience Trilogy by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.) As you listen to this conversation with Tim, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor Tim says the best time to build resilience is before a traumatic event takes place. How can you build resilience now so that you're better prepared if and when potentially traumatic life events occur? Referring to Path to Resiliency, Tim reminds us that God can heal our trauma and enable us to move forward. What examples, biblical or personal, come to mind as you think of God restoring people after a traumatic event? Specifically, what spiritual disciplines can you cultivate now so that those habits are already established if and when traumatic experiences occur? Who do you consider your community to support you through trauma and recovery? Tim shares 2 Corinthians 1:3 as a biblical encouragement that God sustains us through trials. What scripture can you begin clinging to now that will encourage you through the hardships of life? Tim suggests that a self-examination of behavior in day-to-day life–even when things are good–can help assess personal resilience that will prove necessary in hardships. Reflect now on how you're handling the “small things” during this season of life, and ask yourself if there are spiritual disciplines to pursue as you seek to develop this resilience.
Eva Nowotny in conversation with Philippe Lazzarini UNRWA – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees Eva Nowotny and Philippe Lazzarini talk about UNRWA, what makes it so special within the UN, why it is essential and what needs to be done to ensure a sustainable future of the organization and its work. Within the broader UN-family, UNRWA is quite a unique agency. It is the only organization in the UN family to provide direct public services like education, primary health care and a social safety net to Palestinian refugees in the region. It has a humanitarian mandate but its tasks are political in their impact in providing perspectives for Palestinian refugees. However, UNRWA finds itself in a crisis due to the unreliability of its main donors. The agency needs a proper debate with the member states regarding common duties and commitment vis à vis Palestinian refugees in the future in order to find ways out of its precarity. Philippe Lazzarini is Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Prior to this position, he was Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon in the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (2015-2020) and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia (2013-2015). Philippe Lazzarini joined the United Nations in 2003 and has served the Organization in various capacities, including as Deputy Director, Coordination and Response Division of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Head of the OCHA Office for the occupied Palestinian territory, Somalia and Angola and as Area Coordinator for the OCHA Office in Iraq. Before joining the United Nations, he served for ten years with the International Committee of the Red Cross as the Deputy Head of Communication, Head of the ICRC Delegation in Rwanda, Angola and Sarajevo and as an ICRC delegate in Southern Sudan, Jordan, Gaza and Beirut. You crave freedom. Who doesn't? But freedom so often eludes you. Why is that? The answer, according to my guest, is a healthy lifestyle. Freedom to move, to do what you want to do. To get down on the floor with your grandkids. To stay up with your spouse when walking through town. Between the historical baggage of colonialist mission endeavors of the past and the consumer-oriented "selfie mission" focus of present day, many churches and church leaders find themselves at a loss when trying to figure out how practice honest and authentic mission in the way of Jesus. Nina Acosta, the Area Coordinator for Riverside Binky Patrol, told us, "When I started doing this with my daughter 15 years ago, I didn't think that it would still be here!" Susan asked her the reason she's still in Binky Patrol and her favorite part. Nina says it's the stories. Knowing the difference a binky their chapter made given to one child keeps them all going. Being able to immediately handle the need of a child or family in their community is another driving force keeping them motivated. Nina says, "If somebody calls me and says, 'Hey, I've got a, a friend that their house burned down' or 'I've got some kids and that mom's struggling, they don't have blankets, and they're freezing,' just knowing that because of this, I can help them. It might not be a lot it's, but it's enough for what they need at the time." Nina Acosta is a 15 year volunteer and chapter leader for Binky Patrol. She says being able to immediately handle the need of a child or family in their community is another driving force keeping them motivated. What did you do this month to change the life of a child in need? We have ideas on our website.
Susan's 15 year old son Josh was crushed in an ATV accident just days before Christmas. Medical help may have been far away, but God was not. Susan shares how God prepared her for this event, how her family was prompted to pray, the miracles that would follow, and how it led her to get involved with Moms in Prayer, and ultimately, with the Open Eyes ministry. A former Registered Nurse, Susan Younis has been an Area Coordinator for Moms in Prayer for 3 years and leading Moms in Prayer groups for 7 years. She is also working with a beautiful ministry called Open Eyes as a Donor Ambassador. Susan shares as she reflects back to attending her first prayer group solo as Josh was healing: "The takeaway is to say yes when He (God) calls you to something. I love what Charles Stanley says, 'Obedience always brings blessings.' It's scary but I want to be where God wants me to be. On our journey He writes our story, He loves us, and has good plans for us. Sometimes it is hard to step out of that boat, but when you do, it honors God. It will bless you and you'll be a blessing to other people." - Susan Younis 1 John 5:13-15 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. Thank you Susan, for sharing this beautiful testimony with us, and for your service with Moms in Prayer and with Open Eyes as well! You are a blessing to me and to so many others! “The choices Naomi and Ruth make can be seen as a picture of how we can respond to God's invitation to stay where we are in sin or stake all our future on Him.” Oh how we pray our children will make the choice to stake all on Jesus! Today Stacy talks with our wonderful Moms in Prayer International Regional Coordinator of Honduras, Emilia Frech de Alberto as we continue our Moms in the Bible series. She is here to share on our next Bible mom, a favorite of many, Ruth. Listen in as Emilia encourages us to trust our sovereign God who rules in the midst of uncertain times. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Emilia Frech de Alberto has loved to pray since she was very young. For many years, she willingly served with much love and passion as an interpreter for American missionaries living in her country, while she was studying at the University to become an Architect. After graduating, she strongly felt God's call on her life. Doors of opportunity had opened for her to obtain a degree in Practical Theology from Christ for the Nations in Dallas, TX. After several missionary trips, she returned to her country, Honduras. She began to seek God's purpose for her life as her heart had a yearning to be a blessing to her nation; continued working for many years as a teacher and English coordinator in a Christian School and now working from home at a marketing company, also preparing to become a Certified Translator. In 2014, she pioneered her first Moms in Prayer group at a Bilingual School where she worked as a Spiritual Counselor. In July 2018, she became Area Coordinator and is now transitioning to serve as Regional Coordinator. She is excited to see how God is answering their prayers; her team-leaders are growing and helping her to extend the ministry in every department of Honduras. Emilia and her husband Alex have three sons, Caleb Elias, Afif Josue and Alex David. SCRIPTURES: (NIV unless noted) “Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn.” Ruth 2:8-9 (ESV) And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a worthy woman. Ruth 3:11 (ESV) Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 2 Samuel 7:18 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:36-38 (ESV) Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21 LINKS: MOMS IN PRAYER New to Moms in Prayer? Find Out More! PRAY with Moms in Your Community for Your Children Support Our Mission
“At the time of our creation, God knit into you and me all we would need to fight the battle for our children's return.” God is so good! Today Stacy speaks with our Mississippi State Coordinator, Teresa Newcomer. Teresa has walked through many storms in this life and she is going to point us to the hope that is strong and trustworthy, an anchor for our souls. This episode will encourage everyone who is looking for hope, especially hope for prodigals. About our Guest: Teresa Newcomer is honored to serve as Mississippi's first Moms in Prayer State Coordinator. She first became a group leader and started a group for her son's school in 2013, not realizing God was preparing her for leadership as an Area Coordinator and then State Coordinator in 2017. Nothing makes her happier than sharing the joy of praying for children and schools. She enjoys every opportunity to speak to churches and women's groups about the power of prayer. Teresa and her husband, Will, have been married nearly 35 years and have a daughter, 27, and a son, 22. They enjoy traveling, discovering new places and have been blessed by many years of being involved in volunteer missions both at home and abroad. So there is hope for your descendants,” declares the Lord. “Your children will return to their own land.” Luke 18:7-8 (NIV) And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” John 16:33 (NIV) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Acts 17:25 (NIV) “And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.“

Today's guest is Russ Devuyst, former Associate Principal trumpet of the Montreal Symphony, and current head of brass as my alma mater, McGill University. Russ was my undergraduate teacher; he was also my first teacher of such a caliber. Before him, I had never really spent an extended period of time sitting next to someone who could make the trumpet sound that way. The reality is that no matter how many hours I had spent listening to recordings, nothing can prepare you for hearing the real deal next to you. Marco Blaauw once told me that sound memory is in our bones, and that if one spends enough time playing with someone their sound is forever imprinted in our skeletons. While it has been many years since I have had the pleasure of sitting next to Russ, his sound lives very much in me, an always elusive target. His sound also was a true reflection of his personality for me. Russ was always unafraid, and taught be the value of having an opinion on and off the stage. During my interview with Dave Taylor he said he always told his students to remember “safety last!” Russ embodies this to me in both his playing and his personality. While this has gained him many faint-hearted critics, nobody could ever accuse him of being boring; and much to his critics' mortification, instrument manufacturers have yet to engineer a personality for anyone with a good credit score. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

The pandemic did not stop the global movement of Moms in Prayer, and it certainly did not stop American mothers for interceding for their children and the world. Today, Lee is joined by USA Country Coordinator Susan Shepherd and Global Director, Cathi Armitage to discuss the impact COVID 19 has had on children, teachers, schools and Moms in Prayer groups around America. In addition, they discuss the Global Day of Prayer and how you can be involved on January 13, 2021. It’s not just a term for real estate, but it’s also the title of our chapel sermon from Rev. Randy Adams. Rev. Adams and his wife served as pastor of a home missions church before being appointed to Togo and Benin in 1995; they opened the Bible school in Togo in 1997, were appointed UPCI Area Coordinator of French West Africa in 2002 and proved instrumental in the opening of several countries in West Africa. They also led the church in Togo and Benin to become nationalized in 2012. They were appointed as Area Coordinator for all West Africa in 2012; and were appointed by the UPCI general board as Regional Director for Africa in 2015. Truly, his ministry is one of being on location. His sermon today is full of nuggets he has found from being on location in service to the Kingdom and it would not surprise anyone if this sermon resonated with your life and ministry. Because what is service to the Kingdom outside of location? Growing where God has placed you, digging deeper into His word, and searching a greater understanding of Scriptural truths.

Hosted by Antonio Santos, Debra Ruh and Neil MillikenChris Grant is AbilityNet's Area Coordinator in Scotland, or “King of Scotland” as he is affectionately known by the central team. Since starting in May 2018, he has completely transformed their free services in Scotland, generating huge growth in the number of volunteers and the hours of free tech support provided to older people and people with disabilities. He has recruited and now manages a team of 25 volunteers who provide telephone, remote and in-person IT support to older people and people with disabilities, with another 25 volunteers in the pipeline. They fix IT problems, give impartial advice and adapt equipment to suit the clients' individual needs. Alongside this, Chris motivates and supports his volunteer team offering regular meetups, training and one-to-one support & coaching. In Scotland, he is a networking champion, contacting like-minded organisations and charities to spread the word of their free services and increase their impact. There is not a day goes by that he is not making contact with a volunteer, potential volunteer, client, local organisation, or anyone else he can get his hands on (!) to grow the AbilityNet service in Scotland. All this is despite long term health issues that mean he is in constant pain and discomfort. He's energetic, reliable and truly committed. Before Chris joined there were just 6 volunteers in the whole of Scotland. Within just one year, Chris had recruited 25 new volunteers and there are now 50 volunteers in his team.. He has interviewed each of these potential candidates, and communicated with them throughout the process so they feel part of a team before they are even actively making visits. He has also set up eight training sessions in Scotland, inviting experts from other organisations or running it himself, covering topics such as Facebook security, Dolphin, Apple software, etc. He instigated and organised their first-ever Scottish volunteer event. Collaborating with RNIB, he set up the day and organised for volunteers and local charities to attend and take part.He has helped numerous clients. He personally calls every new client to introduce himself, reassure them, and have a good long chat about their IT issues and anything else that's on their mind. Chris' persistence, endless energy and commitment is special.“In recent years, the Scottish volunteer community had become quite dormant, with very few calls coming through. Chris breathed new life into the area, putting an immense amount of energy into working with the existing volunteer group, finding new volunteers and looking at ways to publicise the service so that we find clients who need our services. He's pretty much the non-stop human dynamo in this regard! He also carefully finds the right balance between providing a professional service to our clients on the one hand and awareness that the people providing the service are volunteers with many other demands on their time on the other. This is a real skill – to get the best response possible from a volunteer workforce, while keeping everyone feeling that they are making a valuable contribution.” Simon Flower, AbilityNet volunteer

They tell compelling stories that illustrate the power of having a collective leadership vision with your partner in parenting; the value of small, smart, and intentional experiments in how you work and live ; and the way that bringing others along by engaging in fresh, meaningful ways, especially with your children, can help make sustainable change that works, for all parts of a working parent’s life.
