When most of us think about improving digestion, we focus on food choices, what to eat and what to avoid. But Ayurveda teaches us that how and when we eat, along with our daily lifestyle habits, are just as important for keeping agni (digestive fire) strong and preventing ama (toxins). In this episode, Colette explores five often-overlooked habits that quietly weaken digestion over time and shares simple Ayurvedic fixes to reset them. These shifts may seem small, but they can have a profound effect on energy, immunity, and overall wellbeing. Here's what you'll learn in this episode: Why agni thrives on rhythm and how irregular eating times throw digestion off track How emotional stress diverts energy away from healthy digestion The hidden impact of late-night screen use on your body's natural repair cycles Why even “healthy” foods can cause ama when combined improperly How eating out of sync with the seasons creates imbalance and what to do instead You'll also hear practical, before-and-after lifestyle examples to help you notice where these patterns might be showing up in your own life. * If you're ready for deeper support and motivated to do an all-in-one reset, then come join the discounted Group Digestive Reset Cleanse starting October 3rd, which addresses all five of these areas at once. Send us a textIn this episode, host Andrea Atherton sits down with healer and teacher Dzou Rubin for a profound conversation about what it means to live as sovereign beings in a rapidly shifting world. Together, they explore how love can be experienced not as an emotion but as a living frequency, and how humanity is being called to clear distortions, heal fragmentation, and awaken to a new era of embodied consciousness.Andrea and Dzou discuss the ways old paradigms—patriarchy, matriarchy, teacher, student—are falling away, making room for a more authentic balance of inner union and shared responsibility. Dzou shares his journey through decades of study and teaching in Ayurveda, Yoga, Tantra, Taoist alchemy, and energy medicine, and how those paths inform his mission to help others reactivate their original codes of sovereignty. This dialogue weaves together Andrea's thoughtful inquiry and Dzou's transmissions from his forthcoming works, The Sovereign Blueprint and The Incension Spiral. Send us a textWe had some technical problems with this episode but it is up and running now! In this richly oiled and myth-soaked episode of Third Eye Roll, Dr. Justine Lemos and guest Emily McConnell stir the pot (literally) on Ayurveda's most infamous process—Panchakarma. Forget juice cleanses and detox fads; Panchakarma is more like spiritual surgery, where enemas, oil baths, and nasal therapies become ritual acts of purification. We dive into the five traditional actions, with a special focus on Basti (medicated enemas) and Nasya (nasal oil therapy)—their history, their very real emotional effects, and why they're often misunderstood. Expect side-eye at colonics, love notes to sesame oil, and some straight talk about Monster energy drinks and colon health. And because this is Third Eye Roll, we weave in the myth of Samudra Manthan, the cosmic churning of the ocean that first produced poison before yielding nectar. Shiva and Parvati's wisdom on transmuting toxins becomes a mirror for how Panchakarma transforms body, mind, and soul. Along the way, you'll get unexpected fashion tips (oil-soaked loincloths, anyone?), movie picks (think Alien as a metaphor for cleansing), and the soundtrack of Gregorian chants meets Krishna das. This isn't detox—it's death, rebirth, and nectar.Support the show
Cancer Put Her in a Coma. She Survived. Her Near Death Experience Changed Everything. Mayim Bialik's Breakdown delves into Anita Moorjani's (renowned author, TedX speaker & self-help spiritual speaker) mind-blowing near-death experience (NDE) story and how it completely transformed her cancer, her path to healing & spiritual awakening, and how it changed the way she viewed life after death. Before her miraculous cancer recovery, Anita opens up like never before about the emotional toll of escaping an arranged marriage, her belief that neglecting her own needs while caring for others may have contributed to her cancer, and why living out of alignment with your true self can be toxic (and even deadly). Her integration journey post-NDE wasn't easy. Friends and family treated her like the same person — but she had touched something far greater than this world, and she couldn't go back. Anita Moorjani also breaks down: - Her belief that heaven is not a place, but a state of being - How we're all eternally connected — past, present, and future - Why intuition, self-love, & authenticity are the real medicine we've all been missing - How you're likely manifesting wrong - How Ayurveda and naturopathic healing deeply resonated with her healing journey - Difference between unconditional love (the kind people experience during NDEs) and earthly love - Why deepening your intuition starts with radical self-confidence - How letting go of what isn't authentically you is the key to ultimate healing This is not just a story about cancer — it's a wake-up call about life, death, spiritual awakening and the power of living as your truest self. In this episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi sits down with Ayurvedic practitioner and integrative medicine expert Sam Watts, whose understanding of healing goes far beyond conventional treatments. Rooted in ancient wisdom and backed by science, Sam offers an entirely different way to look at cancer—not just as a physical disease, but as a disconnection from our internal intelligence, lifestyle, and emotional ecosystem. They talk about the mind-body connection, and how emotions like fear and helplessness can literally suppress your immune system, while belief and empowerment activate healing at the cellular level. Sam shares the foods that actively kill cancer cells, the lifestyle habits that disrupt our circadian rhythm and hormones, and why "hope" is the single strongest predictor for survival in cancer patients. Today we dive deeper into the layers of the mind and personality with Ayurvedic Psychology 102: The 3 Doshas and the 3 Gunas. At the heart of Ayurveda lies a timeless template. One that explains not just your body and mind, but consciousness itself through the lens of the five elements and their expressions as the Doshas and Gunas. This isn't just about understanding your stress responses or emotional habits, though that's part of it. It's about learning to see the world through the lens of nature's intelligence. We'll begin with the 3 Doshas: Vata, the principle of movement and change; creative, spontaneous, but prone to anxiety and fragmentation.Pitta, the force of transformation focused, passionate, and discerning yet can burn out or become irritable. Kapa, the energy of structure and cohesion, loving, loyal and calm, but sometimes resistant to change. And then we'll move into the 3 Gunas, the subtle forces of the mind: Sattva brings clarity, peace, and harmony.Rajas brings action, ambition, and restlessness. Tamma brings stillness, but also inertia, confusion or ignorance. These 6 forces, the three Doshas and the three Gunas form a living map of consciousness. They help us understand why we feel, what we feel, do what we do, and how to come back into alignment with our higher self. When you begin to see yourself and others through this elemental lens, life starts to make more sense. You stop personalizing everything and start realizing and relating to your experience with compassion, insight, and greater freedom. In this solo episode, a passionate Amy Wheeler shares candid reflections on the current state and future direction of the yoga therapy profession, with a specific focus on scope of practice, ethics, trauma care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Now serving as the Chair of the Department of Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda at Maryland University of Integrative Health, Amy is teaching a course on ethics, code of conduct, and scope of practice for yoga therapists. This class has reignited critical questions about the growing responsibilities—and limitations—of yoga therapists as the field matures into a recognized profession.Amy explores the nuanced distinction between yoga teaching and yoga therapy, why a tighter scope of practice means doing less (not more), and how trauma-informed care requires collaborative oversight with licensed healthcare practitioners. She also addresses ethical dilemmas in integrating somatics, psychotherapy, and nervous system regulation into yoga therapy sessions—and the risks of unintentionally appropriating Indian philosophical roots by stripping out the foundational teachings of Yoga. With humility and experience, Amy examines the difference between salutogenic models (focused on wellness and whole-person care) and pathogenic models (focused on illness and symptoms), and encourages yoga therapists to find clarity in their role within an integrated care system.Key Topics:Why the scope of yoga therapy is narrower than yoga teachingUnderstanding the ethical boundaries of trauma-informed yoga therapyThe importance of interdisciplinary referrals to LHCPs (Licensed Healthcare Practitioners)How yoga therapists can avoid burnout and emotional overextensionThe difference between pathogenic and salutogenic models of careWhy Indian philosophy must remain central to yoga therapy (and not be replaced by neuroscience alone)The relevance of Yoga Sūtra teachings such as svādhyāya, viveka-khyāti, and īśvara-praṇidhāna in trauma-sensitive practiceThoughts on training requirements for both LHCPs entering yoga therapy and yoga therapists working in mental health contextsResources Mentioned:Amy's blog: The Yoga Therapy Bridge www.amywheeler.com → Blog sectionYoga Sūtra of Patañjali, Bhagavad Gītā, Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā (as foundational sources)Spotify for accessible Upaniṣadic and Yogic philosophy podcasts to share with clientsTakeaways:Yoga therapy is becoming a true profession, and with that comes greater responsibility, structure, and accountability.Trauma-informed work requires caution, training, and often, referral partnerships—it cannot be done in isolation. It's time for the yoga therapy field to develop clear referral guidelines, codify trauma care policies, and ensure practitioners are supported in their own healing journeys.Connect with Amy Wheeler:Website: www.amywheeler.comLearn more about her academic work at www.optimalstate.comMaster of Science in Yoga Therapy https://muih.edu/academics/yoga-therapy/master-of-science-in-yoga-therapy/ Explore MUIH's Post-Master's Certificate in Therapeutic Yoga Practices, designed specifically for licensed healthcare professionals. https://muih.edu/academics/yoga-therapy/post-masters-certificate-in-therapeutic-yoga-practices/ Try our Post-Bac Ayurveda Certification Program at MUIH: https://muih.edu/academics/ayurveda/post-baccalaureate-ayurveda-certification/

What do you think of when you hear “topical herbs”? Chances are, you think about putting herbs on your skin, perhaps in the form of creams, salves, or poultices. But this is only one type of topical application. In herbal medicine, topical use is much broader than applying medicine to the skin (though this is also a critical treatment). Any time an herb comes into direct contact with the tissue it's meant to treat—whether the skin, or the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract or digestive tract—it is acting topically. Here's what you'll learn in this post: The broader definition of topical application, beyond application to the skin How herbs act topically in the respiratory tract, digestive system, female reproductive system, and on the skin Key herbal actions like vulnerary, antimicrobial, demulcent, and more for topical use Preparations for topical use, such as poultices, infused oils, liniments, and medicated neti pots Recommended herbs for each organ system and their unique roles in healing Important cautions and considerations for using topical herbal remedies safely ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ Shop our herbal products: https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Dr. Manas Kshirsagar is an Ayurvedic doctor who comes from a Rig Vedic Brahman tradition with an extensive Ayurvedic background. He graduated from Aloha Ayurveda Academy and the Maharishi University of Management. He's an acclaimed wellness consultant, Ayurvedic consultant and health educator. He provides a holistic approach to medicine, including nutrition, yoga, meditation, detoxification, and effective stress management.Today we're diving into a topic that's reshaping how we think about modern health, the profound connection between our gut and our mind. You've probably heard the phrase trust your gut, but do you know what makes your gut so trustworthy? Modern science says it is our second brain: the Enteric Nervous System. The ENS is a vast network of over a hundred million neurons embedded in the walls of our digestive tract, mostly in the small intestine and colon. That's seven to eight times more neurons than in the spinal cord, which contains around 13.5 million. Our brain contains around 86 billion neurons. Our gut does not just follow orders from the brain. It processes reacts and even remembers patterns and digestion and emotion. It functions independently of the brain, but also communicates with it locally via the vagus nerve. It communicates with the rest of the body through nerves. It uses neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine and actually produces 90 to 95% of serotonin. Both the brain and gut play a major role in mood immunity and digestion both have their own reflexes, sensory neurons and motor neurons, and both respond to stress and emotion, like how anxiety can cause diarrhea. Your gut feels emotional shifts even before your brain processes them, which is why you might get a gut feeling like butterflies or stomach upset during stress. And Ayurveda, this beautifully mirrors the idea that Agni or digestive fire is central to not just physical health, but mental health and emotional resilience. The gut is also a home for Ojas, our vital immunity and vitality. So if our ENS is inflamed or disrupted, our whole system is compromised. In today's episode, we'll explore the enteric nervous system, the complex neural network in your belly that's ultimately connected to your brain. We'll unpack how digestive orders like IBS, bloating and constipation are not just physical issues, but often reflections of deeper emotional patterns. We'll also look at how chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can disrupt our gut's natural rhythm, and how Ayurveda and modern science together offer tools for healing from the inside out.Whether you've struggled with digestion, mood, or both, this episode offers insights to help you feel more grounded, nourished, and connected with your own inner intelligence. In this episode of A Gut Story, gut health expert and author Dimple Jangda with Shreya Ghodawat shares her holistic approach to digestive wellness, blending Ayurveda, naturopathy, homeopathy, and modern medicine. She stresses that gut health goes beyond probiotics and fad diets, encompassing lifestyle, circadian rhythms, food combinations, and mindful eating. Dimple warns against the overuse of antibiotics and painkillers, which damage the microbiome, increase infertility and heart risks, and suppress the body's natural signals. She criticizes processed foods, refined flours, and long-shelf-life products for introducing preservatives and microplastics that disrupt digestion and contribute to chronic illness. Instead, she advocates a whole food plant-based diet rich in farm-to-table fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and millets, while avoiding dairy, meat, and packaged items. She recommends eating within an 8–10 hour window, preferring warm, cooked meals like soups, and avoiding water during meals to preserve digestive fire. Ayurvedic practices such as pranayama, proper sleep cycles, and detox routines like Panchakarma are central to her approach, along with gut-healing ingredients like jaggery, cumin, fennel, stewed fruits, and coconut milk. Dimple explains that plant-based living can improve digestion, sleep, energy, mood, and creativity, while integrating Ayurveda's personalized care with modern medicine's diagnostics provides the best of both worlds. For her, sustainability means caring for one's health without harming the environment or others, minimizing one's carbon footprint, and making ethical choices.

Are you treating your body like a project to fix, or a vessel to honor? Could the root of your illness be emotional, not physical? What if slowing down was the boldest healing move you could make? How do you build a healing ritual—when life won’t slow down? Is your nervous system stuck in survival mode? In this powerful and deeply personal episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi sits down with nutritionist and Ayurvedic wellness coach Mona Sharma, her go-to expert for health and healing. But this conversation isn’t just about what to eat — it’s about what your body is trying to say. Mona shares how her journey from burnout and heart surgeries in the corporate beauty world led her back to her roots in Ayurveda — and how it completely transformed her health. They dive into the emotional roots of illness, the overlooked wisdom of ancient rituals, and how to build a healing practice in your everyday life, no matter where you are. You’ll also hear about Mona’s philosophy that symptoms are not just random — they’re messages. And by listening with compassion, you can become your own greatest healer. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why your anxiety, burnout, and fatigue aren’t just “in your head”. How trauma and suppressed emotions show up as real physical illness. Mona’s healing practices from her time at an ashram — and how to build your own at home. Why the vagus nerve is the key to calming your nervous system. How to use food as medicine, without obsessing over diets. The energy of emotions and how to raise your inner frequency. Why common symptoms like bloating, eczema, and worry are not normal. How to honor your body as a sacred vessel — not a project to be fixed. The difference between habits and healing rituals. Tests and tools to understand your unique body and rebalance it holistically. Whether you're experiencing health challenges or just feeling disconnected, this episode reminds you that healing is not just physical — it’s emotional, spiritual, and deeply personal.
