Leah Houston, M.D. is a board certified emergency physician. While practicing emergency medicine across the U.S. for nearly 10 years, she recognized a common problem. Uncompensated administrative burdens related physician employment and credentialing are a leading cause of administrative waste and physician burnout. She began HPEC in 2018 when realizing that Blockchain could solve the obstructive regulatory problems in healthcare with its distributed ledger technology. HPEC is building a platform that will give every physician a self-sovereign digital identity attached to their credentials in order to create a decentralized autonomous organization of physicians and surgeons. This is essentially a democratic physician's guild. HPEC will streamline the current laborious process of credentialing, reduce administrative waste, improve access to care and give physicians sovereign ownership of their data and employment rights. This also prevents you from paying a penalty at the end of the year. Tax Term #5- Itemized Deductions- These include: mortgage interest, state tax, charitable deductions, sales tax, and property taxes. These have to equal more than the standard deduction for you to claim these on your taxes. You can also use a Donor Advised Fund for charitable giving to optimize your deductions too. All about Scribes and how they can make your life so much easier in clinic. They pay for themselves in the long run too. Bonnie has one and Carrie unfortunately doesn't at the moment. It is a very special day at the Hippocratic Hustle, as I interview our first ever male guest! He is one of the superheroes of physicians and finance. Please welcome, Physician on FIRE, the anonymous anesthesiologist who started the very popular blog by the same name. What exactly is F.I.R.E.? How can we calculate our annual expenditures? What about projections and inflation? What should we do about those pesky student loans? How can we double our money? How long will it take me to really be able to retire? So many questions! Not to mention, when we talk about finances, it's all quite confusing. Have no fear though, Physician on FIRE (PoF) shares his extensive knowledge on topics about financial independence (F.I.) and retiring early (R.E.). Episode 19 Doctor Money Matters. On this episode, my guest is Dr. Bonnie Koo, a dermatologist/finance blogger who is helping educate physicians about the essentials in personal finance. Since we recorded this episode, Bonnie has had many changes in her life including becoming a mother, moving from NY to Philadelphia (Super bowl Champs) and changing her practice type from employed to private practice. Many of you may have heard Bonnie on the Hippocratic Hustle podcast hosted by my fellow physician and podcaster Dr. Carrie Reynolds. In this episode, we talk about some of the issues for those in high income areas, how Bonnie transitioned from a different field into medicine, and how she became interested in finance. She is well on her way to achieving financial success despite a later start in the medical field than most. Since the last episode, the stock market had a minor correction. It’s important to not let the swings in the stock market change your overall investment mindset. This is just noise and it should not deter you from investing. If anything, consider the recent drop which has partially recovered, a small sale. Cryptocurrencies on the other hand have had a major correction, which also have partially recovered. I am not going to give any recommendation on those however. Bonnie’s Blog is at www.missbonniemd.com Please let your friends know about this podcast by sharing it on text, whatsapp or whatever social media platform you are on. Cheri Wiggins, MD: Selling Products Online Today's episode is super funny and super informative! Today's topic surrounds selling products online, and today's guest, Cheri Wiggins, MD has a hilarious product. She sells Caganers. So before we begin, I thought I'd explain what that is. According to Wikipedia, A Caganer is "a figurine depicted in the act of defecation appearing in nativity scenes in Catalonia and neighboring areas with Catalan culture such as Andorra, Valencia, and Northern Catalonia (in southern France). The name "El Caganer” literally means "the crapper". Traditionally, the figurine is depicted as a peasant, wearing the traditional Catalan red cap and with his trousers down, showing a bare backside, and defecating." If you want to see what I am talking about, go to CaganerShop.com for some examples. We talk about: How to find Happiness and Love within Yourself How we see the fault in others before we see the fault in ourselves How coaching is for anyone who wants to make themselves a priority When you make YOURSELF the priority everything else seems to fall into line How Coach/Client relationship works Dr. Mously shares 4 tips to help rekindle the spark in your relationship: L Live, love & laugh in the present Happiness is only experienced in the present tense. Find your joy daily. O Open your heart to forgiveness Self-forgiveness allows us to be imperfect, to refrain from expecting perfection from our loved ones, to focus our hearts on gratitude and gives us the courage to ask for help. V Vulnerably love Intimacy is only experienced in measure to the degree we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. Otherwise, we numb all of our emotions (including joy) and we live a shell of the life we could be experiencing. Choose to live a vibrant life. E Emotional acceptance Allow emotions to be fully experienced without self-judgement or suppression. Suppressed emotions sabotage love. Once we acknowledge our feelings then we have control over them. Thank you for listening to the Hippocratic Hustle! Our next guest addresses the most common concern that parents of small children have: How can I get my child to sleep? Or, as the great author Adam Mansbach more eloquently penned, "Go the F**K to Sleep". Dr. Nilong Vyas' business, Sleepless in NOLA helps parents with this difficult issue. Our episode discusses: How and why she started this business How she decided to leave private practice How she learned the business side of medicine How she knew she'd have a market for this service Specific tips for physicians moms Shedding the mommy guilt! How our children manipulate us Children need guidance and structure How Nilong uses word-of-mouth to market her business Challenges that Nilong has encountered with this type of business Dr. Nilong Vyas is a board certified pediatrician and mother of two boys. She was raised in New Orleans and went on to earn a Master's in Public Health degree from Tulane University as well as an MD from Louisiana State University Medical School. After completing her Pediatrics residency at LSU, she joined private practice where, on a daily basis, she experienced her patient's desire for more sleep for themselves as well as more sleep for their children. The parents explained that with better-rested children, their kids were happier, ate better, and developed at a more rapid rate. However, when that was not the case, secondary to many different factors, they noticed quite a change in the demeanor of their children, thus themselves. Dr. Vyas learned quickly about both children and their parent's sleep needs thus established a strong value for sleep with her patients, in a nurturing fashion. Read more on Bonnie's Blog Certified Financial Planner™ or CFP® Chartered Financial Consultant or ChFC Certified Public Accountant/Personal Finance Specialist or CPA/PFS What is fee-only vs Fee-based? We recommend FLAT FEE only - a step beyond fee only which can also include AUM fees Read more on Bonnie's Blog What is the fiduciary standard? What does this mean? Like hippocratic oath for FAs What is NAPFA? National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. NAPFA is the most recognized national organization of true fee-only FAs. To qualify for NAPFA membership, the applicant must submit a financial plan for review, take an oath to be a fiduciary in all client relationships, and comply with annual continuing education requirements. What's the difference between Financial advisor and financial planner? Seems like most FAs really don't do much but manage portfolios. And this leads many ppl to believe the retirement portfolio IS the plan...it's a tool not the plan A typical financial advisor is like a doctor who always writes the same prescription to every patient. No history, no vitals, no work up and no follow up. A financial planner, on the other hand, never prescribes without a complete history (your money history and habits – your psychology) and work-up. Expect to spend the first several meetings with your FP to delve into you and your goals and then together, develop the right plan for you.
