In this special live panel session recorded at the 7th Annual HVAC/R Training Symposium, the three founders of Kalos Services — Bryan Orr, his father Robert (Bob) Orr, and uncle Keith Huntington — sit down together to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary and answer questions from the audience and online attendees. Hosted by Bert, the conversation blends humor, hard-earned wisdom, and surprising candor about what it actually takes to build and sustain a trades business over two decades. From humble beginnings with $100,000 in startup capital to managing multi-million-dollar commercial contracts today, the founders pull back the curtain on the messy, unpredictable, and deeply human reality of entrepreneurship in the skilled trades. A recurring theme throughout the panel is that starting a business requires far more than technical skill — it demands grit, personal support, and an almost stubborn refusal to outspend your income. Bryan shares a raw, memorable story about living in a double-wide trailer with seven kids while Kalos was already nine years old, choosing to improvise a drainage workaround rather than take on debt he couldn't afford. The founders agree that the number-one ingredient for small business survival is grit — the ability to wake up the next morning after a terrible day and take the next step anyway. Robert adds a philosophical note that extreme negative emotions in business are almost never accurate; they pass, and tomorrow tends to look better than the night before suggested it would. One of the most discussed topics in the panel is how to motivate technicians to care about quality — not just revenue targets. Bryan makes a pointed distinction: if you build a compensation system optimized purely for money, you attract people who are only motivated by money. Instead, he advocates building a culture where belonging is tied to quality of work. Practical tools like daily photo-posting of installs in Google Chat, public shout-outs for great work, and peer commentary create an environment where craftspeople hold each other to a standard — not because they're forced to, but because it's who they are. Keith echoes this, emphasizing that most technician frustration stems not from laziness but from unclear systems and expectations set by leadership. When people don't know what's expected, they disengage — and that's a leadership problem, not a people problem. The panel also dives into the nuances of running a family business, with all three founders offering surprisingly candid takes. Keith notes that the key to 20 relatively friction-free years has been that all three founders are "120 degrees different" from each other — their strengths don't overlap, so they rarely fight over territory. Bryan adds that healthy family businesses require the ability to have real conflict for the sake of mission, not just harmony. He also speaks to the importance of organizational structure when family members are involved: his own son Gavin, at 21 years old, works at Kalos but reports through multiple layers of management precisely so Bryan doesn't micromanage him. The session closes with reflections on the riskiest moments in the company's history — and Bryan's honest admission that four weeks prior to the symposium ranked among the most stressful, as large promised contracts delayed in paperwork can shake even an established business to its core. Topics Covered Expanding HVAC services into electrical and plumbing — what technicians can realistically do and when to partner with specialists The real prerequisites for going out on your own: craft knowledge, personal support system, and financial discipline Why grit — not capital or credentials — is the single most important ingredient for small business survival How to attract technicians who genuinely care about quality, not just technicians who chase commissions Using internal tools like Google Chat to reinforce a culture of craftsmanship and peer accountability The danger of building systems that look great on paper but don't survive contact with real-world field conditions Advice on contractor mentoring programs — how to absorb outside coaching without losing your own identity and standards Lessons from running a family business: complementary roles, honest conflict, and the importance of organizational separation How Kalos Services grew from $100,000 in startup capital to a multi-trade general contractor over 20 years The role of visionary vs. operator personalities in a founding team, and why both are essential The founders' biggest career mistakes — including owning full responsibility for a six-figure grocery store power outage Why private equity growth models don't translate to owner-operated trades businesses Hiring to fill your weaknesses: from permitting to office management, delegating what you hate frees you to lead Recommended training resources: HVAC School, Ty Craig / Skill Cat, Ruth King, ESCO, and Dirk Nauman Why the riskiest stage of business is never behind you — it scales with the size of your contracts   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that Louisiana must redraw its congressional map, finding that one of the state's majority-black districts was unconstitutionally gerrymandered based on race. The decision weakens — but does not strike down — Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which prohibits voting practices that discriminate on the basis of race or color. In the wake of the decision, several states could move to redraw their congressional maps based on the Court's guidance, an effort that is expected to benefit Republicans. Leadership and Loyalty™

Confronting The World Peace Is Impossible, Lie! What if a Specific Kind of Curiosity Is the Cure for Global Dividedness? Show Notes What if the greatest threat to peace isn't hatred… but certainty? In this episode of The Polymathic Perspective Podcast, Dov Baron examines a paradox defining our time: We are more connected than any humans in history… And yet more divided than ever. Drawing on neuroscience, social psychology, history, and real-world conflict, this episode explores why access to information has not created understanding, why speed has replaced depth, and how the human addiction to certainty is quietly fueling division at every level, from families to nations. At the center of this conversation is a powerful idea: Generous curiosity. Not curiosity that seeks to confirm what we already believe, but curiosity that is willing to question identity, slow down judgment, and remain open long enough to discover the humanity behind opposing perspectives. In This Episode • Why connection does not equal understanding • How the attention economy amplifies outrage over wisdom • The psychological roots of binary thinking and tribal division • Why certainty is often mistaken for truth • How curiosity rewires the brain for empathy and learning • The role of context in shaping perception and meaning • Why leaders and systems benefit from division • Real-world examples of reconciliation in extreme conflict The Central Question If peace requires anything… Are you willing to question what you are certain about? Why This Matters Division is not just happening around us. It is being rewarded, amplified, and conditioned into us. And unless we understand the emotional, psychological, and systemic forces driving that division, we risk mistaking reaction for truth, and certainty for wisdom. About the Host Dov Baron is a polymathic thinker, leadership strategist, and host of The Polymathic Perspective Podcast. This week on the Moms On Call Podcast features an in-depth conversation with entrepreneur and leukemia survivor Charlie Razuk, founder of Jackfir, a clean, non-toxic men's skincare brand inspired by his cancer journey and concern about environmental toxins. Razuk describes how his diagnosis and multi-year treatment reshaped his view of health, leading him into “clean living” and revealing a gap in the market for effective, low-toxicity skincare tailored to men who might resist using traditionally “feminine” products. For listeners facing hard seasons, Razuk describes coping strategies such as holding onto hope for future plans, making lists of goals, using low-effort entertainment when reading is difficult, and the restorative power of daily walks outdoors. The conversation reframes self-care as a prerequisite for being a better partner, parent, and friend rather than selfishness, using examples like quitting alcohol, choosing the gym or sleep over social obligations, and recognizing that saying “no” can ultimately improve how one shows up for others. Doubt is a big piece of faith. It can be hard to understand why God calls us to do the things he does. In this expansive and heart-opening conversation, we sit down with Tessa Frommer, Human Design coach and Founder of Social Alchemy Institute, to explore what it truly means to live in alignment with your design. Tessa shares her deeply embodied journey—from studying Human Design intellectually to fully integrating it through lived, somatic experience—and how that transformation reshaped her life, relationships, and business. We dive into the nuances of emotional authority, sacral response, the transition into the new paradigm, and the importance of community, authenticity, and self-trust. This episode is a powerful reminder that Human Design is not just a system to learn, but an experiment to live—and that our greatest gift is giving others permission to be fully themselves. Key Takeaways: How true alignment comes from living and embodying your design—not just studying it. Why emotional authority requires patience, as clarity unfolds over time—and why honoring your emotional wave is key. How Human Design can be used as a tool for empowerment, not a rigid rulebook—and why it's essential to trust your inner authority above all else. How being in alignment gives others permission to do the same: when you fully embody your authentic self, you naturally create space for others to be themselves. Why thriving in the future means embracing your uniqueness while intentionally cultivating real, in-person community. Forgiveness: The Pathway to Happiness with Dr. Dravon JamesWhat if the most powerful prescription for healing doesn't come in a bottle? In this deeply moving and unexpectedly eye-opening episode, I sit down with Dr. Dravon James—who, as a pharmacist, fills prescriptions to help people heal and feel better, but this time offers a prescription that doesn't come in a bottle: forgiveness. Not the surface-level kind. Not the “just move on” version many of us were taught.  But real, healing forgiveness—especially forgiving ourselves.Dr. Dravon vulnerably shares her own story of misunderstanding forgiveness after experiencing deep father wounds as a child. When her father left, she quickly forgave him—but turned the blame inward, believing she was the problem. As she explains, this wasn't true forgiveness at all. It was self-abandonment.Together, we unpack what forgiveness really is—and what it is not.In this episode, we explore:Why forgiveness is not condoning harmful behaviorThe difference between forgiving others and forgiving yourselfCommon barriers to forgiveness, including:Lack of self-awarenessLack of clarityEmotional exhaustionWaiting for an apologyConfusing forgiveness with approvalHow forgiveness is an act of self-love, not weaknessHow forgiving frees you from the emotional grip of othersWhy forgiveness helps you reclaim your power and inner peaceForgiveness & HealthWe also discuss the powerful connection between forgiveness and physical health. Holding on to resentment, anger, and unresolved emotional pain doesn't just weigh on the heart—it impacts the body. Forgiveness, when done correctly, can reduce stress, support emotional regulation, and contribute to overall well-being.This conversation reframes forgiveness as a pathway to peace, freedom, and healing—not for someone else's benefit, but for your own.About Dr. Dravon JamesDr. Dravon James is a transformation specialist, inspirational speaker, author, and the Founder and Director of Everyday Peace. On Saturday, a gunman fired shots at the Washington Hilton Hotel, which was hosting the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) dinner. The Secret Service evacuated President Donald Trump and other senior leaders, and none of the guests were injured. One Secret Service officer was shot while engaging the suspect outside the ballroom, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not seriously wounded. The gunman allegedly sent a manifesto to his family before the attack, suggesting that he intended to kill the president and other administration officials. He was charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on federal officers using a dangerous weapon.Ad-free podcasts are here!To listen to this podcast ad-free, and to enjoy our subscriber only premium content, go to ReadTangle.com to sign up!How Christians think about their politics.I think Americans of various political and religious stripes often forget that we do live in a pluralistic society — one where Christians, or Jews, or Muslims, or atheists inevitably bring their theology to the ballot box or to the policy debate. And when that happens, those religious beliefs do inform our national identity — but that is not necessarily a bad thing. In last Friday's edition, Associate Editor Audrey Moorehead explored some Americans' concerns about the rising influence of “Christian nationalism” in the U.S. government, breaking down what this term means, the influence of Christian beliefs on both sides of the aisle, and how we should think about that influence.
