Gary Kusin is a legendary entrepreneur best known as the co-founder and former CEO of GameStop and the executive who led Kinko's through a remarkable turnaround before its $2.4 billion acquisition by FedEx. Over a decades-long career, Gary has built, scaled, and sold multiple businesses while developing a reputation as one of the sharpest strategic thinkers in entrepreneurship. In this episode, Travis shares some of his biggest lessons from Gary's appearance on the show, covering everything from mentorship and hard work to debt management and identifying opportunities in the marketplace. On this episode we talk about: Why finding a market opportunity is often more important than following your passion The role mentors played in Gary's career and how great mentorship can change your trajectory Why hard work and working smart are complementary—not competing—ideas The dangers of debt in seasonal and cyclical businesses How constantly building relationships and maintaining a Plan B creates long-term career security Top 3 Takeaways The best business opportunities often come from identifying unmet market demand rather than pursuing personal passions. Mentorship can dramatically accelerate success, but the most effective mentors are often outside your organization and industry. Staying prepared, building relationships, and keeping your options open creates opportunities long before you need them. Notable Quotes "Find the hole in the market. The passion can stay a hobby." "Luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparedness." "The people who win the most work smarter and harder." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Johnny Mac shares five good news stories: In the Netherlands, engineer Thomas built a motion-sensing car with a water-tank seat for his goldfish Blub, who drove 40 feet 3.46 inches in one minute to set a world record; Thomas hopes the technology can be useful for mobility issues. In New York, 270 people in Mario costumes gathered at a GameStop on March 10 to celebrate Mario's holiday and beat the prior record of 230 set in China in 2010. In England, an ancient Phoenician coin used as bus fare in Leeds—about 2,100 years old and showing the god Melqart—was donated to Leeds Museum and Galleries. Archaeologists found a 1,600-year-old Egyptian mummy buried with a papyrus Iliad fragment. In Indianapolis, a friendly dog was spotted running a mini-marathon and was taken to Animal Care Services to locate its owners. 00:11 Goldfish Drives Car01:05 Mario Costume Record01:39 Ancient Coin Bus Fare02:54 Iliad Mummy Discovery03:18 Marathon Running Dog John also hosts Daily Comedy NewsUnlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! In Episode 302 of Remarkable Retail, Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc sit down with Eric Sadi, Co-President, North America at Simon Property Group, for a long-overdue conversation on what the modern mall has actually become—and why the obituaries keep aging badly. Eric walks through Simon's reimagination strategy: replacing tired anchor boxes with mixed-use destinations that braid together dining, entertainment, fitness, hospitality, and even residential living. He explains why occupancy at the top of the portfolio sits above 96%, why rents and tenant sales keep climbing, and why human connection, discovery, and community still drive the consumer behaviour the algorithms can't replicate. The "third place" isn't a slogan—it's a deliberate redesign of what a shopping centre is for. The conversation also takes on the most misunderstood narrative in retail: why Walmart, Target, Apple, and a new generation of experiential brands keep pouring billions into stores when so much of the growth lives online. The short answer? Stores aren't just sales channels anymore. They're infrastructure, media, and community. The "stores are dying" story is one of the laziest media frames in the business, and Steve and Michael take it apart. Before the interview, the hosts unpack a packed news week: renewed inflation worries as fuel, transportation, and food costs climb again, and what that means for retailer margins; standout earnings from some of the most remarkable performers in the business, including Simon's continued strength, On Running's expanding margins and rising cultural heat, and The RealReal's case that luxury resale is one of the fastest-growing corners of fashion. They also weigh in on GameStop's bid for eBay—and eBay's flat rejection—a strong candidate for dumbest story of the year. Plus Amazon's latest AI moves and what they signal about where the platform wars are headed. The episode closes with Steve wondering whether rising fuel costs will drive more online sales and Michael's specialty grocery discoveries in Los Angeles: Laurel Supply, Gonzalez Northgate Market, and the much-anticipated arrival of T&T. Starting with the fun stuff, Gears Of War: E-Day is looking to take a slot in what will, no doubt, be an extremely busy September. How it leaked is the fun part! In the not so fun stuff, Xbox themselves leaked Forza Horizon 6 via Steam. Fortunately, it is very close to the game's launch, but there is more to this story. How did this go down and should there be any panic? It appears that Xbox got sick of the whole weekly negative news cycle schtick and has decided to go in the other direction. Is this week's news truly all that positive? I sincerely depends on how you look at it and nobody will actually know until much later. Asha Sharma has made new additions to her leadership team. Sarah Bond's former team has been replaced by alumni of Meta, Instacart, and CoreAI which all happen to be people that worked with Asha at the same time she led those respective companies. Is this the invasion of AI into Xbox as we initially feared? We get into that, but there's almost zero doubt that Xbox anticipated this because they pulled out quite the plot twist. Copilot for console and mobile is stopped, effective immediately. So, while there is more AI focused leadership than ever in Xbox, they also just axed one of the worst things the brand started rolling out last year. How do the Dukes feel about all of this? Well, that's why you're here, no? Pull up a chair, relax, and let's talk about Xbox some more before Brad returns and ruins it all. Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement.0:00:00 - Intro0:09:13 - Health Is Wealth0:16:28 - Halo 2 & 3 reportedly being remade0:38:22 - New Xbox boot up screen for the first time in 6 years0:42:12 - Jez Corden's latest Xbox exclusivity scoop1:10:20 - GameStop is trying to acquire eBay1:17:06 - Steam Machine pre orders soon?1:21:17 - PS4 and XB1 may finally be on the way out1:27:54 - Bank Of America wants higher priced games1:33:03 - NBA: The Run revealed and arrives June 20261:38:00 - Are content creators heavily influencing the conversation?1:56:15 - Marathon has story plans for the next few years1:59:00 - Looking ahead at May 2026 game releases2:27:17 - What We're Playing3:10:04 - Xbox is giving up Copilot and bringing in a new leadership group Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's “Marketplace Tech Bytes: Week in Review,” we'll discuss why Apple is paying a $250 million settlement over its Apple Intelligence tool and its capabilities. Plus, GameStop makes a surprising buyout offer for eBay. But first up: Anthropic, maker of the chatbot Claude, announced a new computing deal this week with SpaceX and its AI division, xAI. Anthropic will get access to SpaceX's Colossus One data center, which will let the company increase how much its customers can use Claude. The deal comes as SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is facing off in federal court against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. Marketplace's Stephanie Hughes spoke about all this with Caroline O'Donovan, AI and technology senior reporter at The San Francisco Standard, who noted that Anthropic's leaders talked about the need for more computing power at their developer conference this week.
