This week, much to Christopher’s chagrin, we do a deep dive into Yacht Rock! We’ll hear from Toto, Steely Dan, Doobie Bros, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Boz Scaggs, Seals & Crofts, Little River Band, Orleans and… Earth, Wind & Fire? (That last one leads to a spirited disagreement between Tom & Christopher) Among the highlights of this episode: - Michael McDonald explains the evolution of the Doobie Brothers’ sound - Christopher Cross talks about his debut album, which contained several Yacht Rock classics. - Steve Porcaro explains how a group of session players and friends morphed into Toto - Kenny Loggins remembers working with Stevie Nicks on “Whenever I Call You Friend” - Al Stewart deconstructs the story behind his biggest hit, “Year Of The Cat” - Boz Scaggs breaks down “Lido Shuffle” and “Lowdown” - We also hear from the most reluctant group in the Yacht Rock pantheon, Steely Dan, including a bonus cut from the Dan’s only foray into advertising jingles. (We assure you it’s a weird one!) - Plus, interview clips from Little River Band, Orleans, Marc Jordan, Seals & Crofts and more. It’s an episode chock full of artists who are Yachty by nature! Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. In November 1972, a new California band suddenly burst onto the scene with a brilliant debut album. But that band was really just a recording vehicle for two songwriters from New York, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker, who would go on to create some of the finest albums of the Seventies and get inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2001. But this first one has gone down in history as one of rock's finest. Randy Renaud revisits the birth of Steely Dan on this week's edition of the Chronicles of Rock.

It's been a hot minute since the boys did a "pop" episode, but given this very special installment is devoted to jazz-rock gods of the seventies Steely Dan, maybe this doesn't count. The Dan's somewhat controversial 1980's sign-off gets a good look in and then various tributes are dissected, with Pat arguing that jazz musicians need to take the kid gloves off when confronting this most seminal of cross-over hit-makers. Also, Keith Jarrett called and he wants his royalties. Steely Dan - GAUCHO; Chris Ingham – WALTER/DONALD; Sara Isaksson and Rebecca Tornqvist - FIRE IN THE HOLE; Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz – STEELY DAN ; Woody Herman – CHICK, DONALD, WALTER, AND WOODROW.
In this special bonus episode recorded before their Season 8 finale discussion, Berly and LA score the ultimate get: Ben Edlund himself, the genius writer-producer who literally gave their podcast its name with that iconic "denim-wrapped nightmares" line from Season 6.Ben takes the hosts on a wild ride through his Supernatural journey, from joining the show in Season 2 (after binge-watching all of Season 1 on VHS tapes like some kind of monster) to navigating what he describes as the show's "muscle car, bro-y" culture while being the guy who brought whimsy and chaos to the series. He reveals the origin stories behind fan-favorite episodes like "Monster Movie" (spoiler: it involved solving the "good will hunting on the board" problem of classic Hollywood monsters), "The French Mistake" (originally pitched as more Broadway Danny Rose, Kripke made it meta perfection), and the Ghost Facers theme song (yes, that's Ben singing in falsetto). The conversation gets emotional discussing "Abandon All Hope" and the heartbreaking deaths of Ellen and Jo—a decision Ben clarifies wasn't solely his but one he committed to making as devastating as possible. He also defends killing too many characters (sort of), explains why Andy and Bobby should've stuck around for story leverage, and admits he probably wouldn't kill a dog in "Repo Man" if he wrote it today.Fair warning: Ben's a delightfully rambling genius who goes on tangents about everything from Bat Boy to Steely Dan production modes, and the hosts are living for every minute of it.Sources:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_EdlundFootnote: Since the recording of this interview, Berly and LA have, in fact, cried during another one of their episodes.Send us your review!Support the showTHANK YOU FOR LISTENING!Please rate and review Denim-Wrapped Nightmares wherever you get your podcasts! In this episode of The Mentors Radio, Host Tom Loarie talks with Daniel Levintin, PhD, a neuroscientist, cognitive psychologist, musician and best-selling author whose newest book, I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine, explores how music changes the brain, strengthens memory and restores joy. Dr. Levitin's research explains why that happens. He's a Founding Dean of Arts and Humanities at Minerva University in San Francisco, James McGill Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal, and the author of ten acclaimed books, including This Is Your Brain on Music and The Organized Mind. Before turning to science, he spent years as a studio musician and producer, working with artists like Sting, Joni Mitchell, and Steely Dan—so he understands music from the inside out. Today, we'll explore why music is remembered when everything else fades, how it reduces pain and loneliness, and how we can use it as a form of service — to comfort others, strengthen connection, and even rediscover ourselves. “When you hear ‘Yacht Rock,' what's the first band or musician that comes to mind?”That's how JB and Sandy kick off this episode, sparking a nostalgic and hilarious debate about the music that defined a generation—and the labels artists love to hate. From Christopher Cross to Steely Dan, the crew dives deep into the world of smooth tunes, local legends, and the quirky history of Austin's music scene. But the episode doesn't stop at music. JB and Sandy, joined by Tricia, take listeners on a whirlwind tour of Austin's weirdest news, including the story of a Travis County correctional officer arrested for smuggling… chicken wings! The team can't help but laugh at the absurdity, pondering whether the real crime is not paying officers enough or just having a side hustle as a “wing smuggler.”Other highlights include:Zilker Park's post-ACL transformation: How Austin City Limits Festival gives back to the city and why disc golf fans feel left out.The rise of magicians at adult birthday parties: JB and Sandy explore the trend, share personal stories, and even search for Austin's best magicians for hire—including the unforgettable “Peter the Adequate Magician.”Clown sightings in Austin: From Balloonatik to Doodle Bug, discover the strange world of professional clowns living in Barton Springs and the surreal experience of seeing them drive by on a Saturday morning.Family, nostalgia, and music: Touching memories of Nat King Cole Christmas albums, Bee Gees hits, and the magic of Elvis duets.Notable Quotes:“Guys, the longer you're married, the unfunnier you become.”“He was suspended without pay. He has since been fired and has been arrested for chicken wings.”“Four clowns living around you, it's like you're in a nightmare.”Guest Insights:Tricia brings her signature humor and local perspective, while JB and Sandy's chemistry keeps the conversation lively, unpredictable, and always entertaining. Writer, filmmaker and co-host of the Box Office GROSS podcast Rob Stammitti joins me from Pittsburgh to begin a miniseries on the UK cult band Prefab Sprout, a critically acclaimed band that sold millions of albums and yet didn't become as huge as they deserved to be. They were hard to categorize, barely toured outside of continental Europe and were somewhat out of step with prevailing trends in popular music in their day and still left behind a fascinating body of work that more people should be aware of.In part one we discuss arriving late to the game in discovering Prefab Sprout and the long shadow Paddy McAloon casts on modern music before returning to the origin story in County Durham, England, their attention-getting early singles and then track-by-track on their 1984 debut LP Swoon (Songs Written Out Of Necessity). McAloon throws down the gauntlet here, combining post-punk with Bacharach and Broadway influences to create a stunning set at odds with the commercial trends of the era, songs about hard-to-express emotions presented in complex arrangements, which also served as a portrait of the artist as a young man and his declaration of intent, which included projecting an insane youthful self-confidence in his own greatness and great scorn for his contemporaries, wanting to be compared to Sondheim, not Spandau Ballet.Along the way we discuss the importance of Wendy Smith's voice, the Steely Dan factor, Paddy's “Shots Fired” diss tracks, and some of our favourite moments from Swoon that we hope will Sproutpill the uninitiated.Follow Rob Stammitti on Bluesky, subscribe to his Substack, visit his YouTube page and listen to his podcast with Brian Schmid, Box Office GROSS.“Side by Side with Sondheim – Swoon and the Great American Musical”, from the Sproutology website, a great resource for the Sproutpilled.Music video for Don't Sing, Prefab Sprout, 1984

Our favorite Smokin Cobra Dean Simone returns to Yeah Uh Huh to discuss 1972's debut album by Steely Dan, "Can't Buy a Thrill". Steely Dan is know for it's jazz infused style on such songs as "Reelin in The Years", "Peg" and "Hey 19". But as this record demonstrates, the band was far more eclectic than that. The story of one of the sunniest and funniest personalities to emerge in the world of rock, the Turtles‘ Mark Volman, is being told in a book whose title is a play on the name of his biggest hit, “Happy Together”. However, unlike many memoirs, Volman's own words comprise less than five percent of the text. Instead, this is a third-person oral history, much like Legs McNeil's wonderful punk rock history opus from 2016, Please Kill Me.Mark Volman's Happy Forever is told almost entirely by 100 of his famous collaborators, rock scenesters, friends, and family, with the occasional sidebar from Mark himself. This six-decade-long narrative includes his rise to fame with the Turtles alongside his singing partner Howard Kaylan, their brilliant stint with Frank Zappa's the Mothers of Invention, their solo career as Flo & Eddie, and their role as backup singers on mega-hits by Marc Bolan, Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, the Ramones, Steely Dan and more.
Welcome to the kick off of Transmissions' new season with your host, Jason P. Woodbury, after a wonderful summer mini-series from Tyler Wilcox, All One Song: A Neil Young Podcast. We first encountered this week's guest, New Zealand songwriter, actor, and composer Bret McKenzie, as one half of the indie pop/comedy duo Flight of the Conchords in the mid-2000s. But did you know that before that, he was a member of one of New Zealand's most popular reggae party bands? "Just for context, reggae music in New Zealand is kind of rock music in America or maybe even country," McKenzie says. "Outside Jamaica, New Zealand has the highest sales of Bob Marley records in the world. And it's the music you hear playing in the background when you're out." Since then, he's gone onto composer for film and TV projects like The Simpsons, The Muppets, Spongebob Squarepants, and more, and in 2022, he released Songs Without Jokes via Sub Pop Records. Inspired by vintage Los Angeles pop, the record showcased McKenzie sans obvious jokes, but not without levity and good humor. His new album, Freak Out City came out on August 15. Bolstered by vintage electric piano and groovy and psychedelic touches, it finds McKenzie expanding his Nilsson-esque palette with touches of Steely Dan, JJ Cale, and Todd Rundgren. McKenzie joins us on Transmissions to discuss the rabbit holes of modern life, cutting the record with studio legends like Leland Sklar, the Conchords specific brand of comedy, and shares details about his proposed Emmet Otter reboot with Ed Helms. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.

Mikey Wheeler is a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a musician, and a tattoo artist. He's also my guest for Episode No. 181.Every now and again I wax emotional about what a good human with whom I've had the privilege of sitting on the other side of the table of, and when I do so it is 100 percent not in an effort to speak any less of the other fine folks that've been kind enough to join me.We've all got a story or stories. We've all rowed the channels of life in one form or other.Being that this show is what this show is, though, it's difficult to manage my time wisely enough to get folks to sit in the chair opposite mine. And it's a whole other cart of magic beans to land someone that's as sharp, articulate, benevolent, and wise as the likes of a Mikey Wheeler.I said this while we were rolling, and I don't want to ruin anything by repeating any thing that doesn't warrant it, but this one's an exception: Shouts out to Mikey's mom, Debra, his siblings and his grandma and his uncle. Shouts out to the friends and bandmates Mikey's made along the way. Shouts out to his wife and all his work homeys, too. This is a conversationalist, and were I of the means to launch a podcast network, I'd try to get Mikey to be a part of that content with some consistency.Mikey earns his living inking humans and he does so down at Windhorse Tattoo. The joint's visible online at windhorserising.com, and you can roll your IRL bones in there at 901 E. 31st Street in downtown KCMO. Give them a buzz at 816-283-0500, and toss 'em a follow on the old IG at @windhorsetattoo. At this very moment, I can't personally speak to the fruits of Mikey's labor, but he's got a handful of repeat customers, is perpetually acquiring new, and -- per our conversation -- he's booked out six to eight months. So if you've ever been on the fence and one of your hesitations has been because you don't know who to go to in Kansas City, pick up the phone and call Windhorse; I suspect they can set you straight.Anyway...Mikey and I talked about the wild life experience of growing up in a way that didn't necessarily look like that of those around you but winding up grateful for the very manner in which it happened, regardless. We talked hoops, tatts, Steely Dan, Slint, Mike Patton projects, the glorious benefit of attending absolutely dynamite shows where everyone present is just jazzed to the gills about being there. We talked about the idea of there being two kinds of people -- those who care about humanity + everyone else -- on this planet. We man-crushed over Daniel Day-Lewis like a couple of goobers, and we talked about being in bands and making music. It was awesome.Follow the dude on Instagram at @mikeywheelertattooer, and stay tuned for the entirety of our chat; I don't typically edit much out, anyway, but this one clicked the whole way through. It'll be worth your time.copyright disclaimer: I don't own the rights to the audio clips contained within these episodes. In this one particularly, I lifted snippets from a tune called, "Theme from the Bottom." It's a track from the 1996 record, Billy Breathes, that the greatest band in American rock history, Phish, released, c/o of Elektra Entertainment Group. I'm not doing anything non-Fair Use here, though, YouTube, so please stop blocking me from receiving the monetary sums I'm not yet qualified to earn.Thank you.

First published in 1994, author Brian Sweet's book on Steely Dan, Reelin' in the Years, has been recently updated and reprinted to incorporate the last few years of the band's legacy. We discuss the band's unique way of working, their mysterious personalities, why they're considered "cool" when so many others of that genre aren't, why so many musicians lined up to work with them and how Brian came to write the only book on the band of its kind. These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more. They gave us escapism, identity, and some truly quotable lines. Did one of these movies speak to you? Did you own the soundtrack?
