The liver is an organ that does many important things for the body, from reducing inflammation to detoxifying damage from inflammation. To support the liver, one should consume foods that support antioxidant production. Antioxidants help reduce inflammation throughout the body and help protect the heart, brain, and digestive tract from damage. Stress is a major cause of inflammation, and the liver will work overtime to try to reduce it. Consuming foods that support the liver's functions is essential to maintaining good health. The liver produces antioxidants, such as glutathione and NAC (acetylcysteine), which have pro, neurogenic and neuroprotective properties. Glutathione is often given via IV, while NAC is a precursor to glutathione and can be taken as a supplement. The World Health Organization recognizes NAC as an essential medication. In order to support the production of antioxidants, the liver needs nutrients such as vitamins B6, B9, B12, B2, B3, lgutamine, and methionine. The liver also helps regulate hormones, which are signals sent to the brain in response to stress. When we wake up, our body starts producing different hormones as a result of being awake. The liver is an organ that does many important things for the body, from reducing inflammation to detoxifying damage from inflammation. Keep this in mind the next time you're doing blood work because you want to include liver hormone or liver enzyme panels. Along with your hormone panels, ask your practitioner to order it alongside. That's the reason why all of our vitamins are methylated. Because of people like me. Every single Msw nutrition vitamin has methylated factors in it to help support the mthfr gene because people like me need it in order to function better. And on a side note, we'll get into one episode later, but the mthfr gene and the comt gene are directly connected. So if a person has an issue with both, like we mentioned before, it puts them at higher risk for estrogen and dopamine issues as well as detoxification and hormone regulation. That's my genetics. So I'm at higher risk for things like diabetes because of insulin problems with the liver, right? I'm at higher risk for low testosterone and higher estrogen, which could put me at risk for cancer. And then, because all these issues are also involving neurotransmitter production and the brain, what does that look like for vascular dementia down the road for me and cognitive decline?. Anyone that has an Mthfr issue needs to take methylated vitamins in order to support this gene and its many pathways. Some of the methylated vitamins that you could take are methylated B Nine, five, MTHF. There's also methylcobalamin, which is B twelve, and my personal favorite, P five P vitamin B six. I take these on a daily basis along with something known as trimethylglycine or betaine in order for my methylation cycle to work correctly, because I cannot afford to have any Undermethylated liver.

It is well-known that optimal folate consumption has positive effects on a wide range of health conditions including fetal neural tube defects (eg. anencephaly, spina bifida), orofacial deformities such as cleft palate, pre-eclampsia and premature birth, as well as mood stability and longevity. This list is by no means extensive. Folic acid has been added to non-artisan/non-organic bread in Australia since 2009 for the purpose of protecting  babies born with neural tube defects. While folic acid is certainly the cheapest form of the folates, the question remains, "Is it the best form?"  Certainly, folic acid is NOT synonymous with folate from food or 5-MTHF supplements and errors or omissions in research papers and dietary guidelines stating "folate" when folic acid is the actual form used, are not correct, nor acceptable. Moreover, evidence is mounting not only of the penetrance of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in general, especially the A677T form, but also how these SNPs affect folate metabolism and worryingly how they affect the metabolism and excretion of cheap folic acid from fortified foods and supplements. Carolyn Ledowsky has long been a fervent advocate of the 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) form because of issues with this unmetabolised folic acid taken by some individuals in doses well above the 1000mcg upper tolerable limit set out by medical and food authorities. The Case:  Pam is dealing with brain fog, poor concentration, and fatigue. Tests revealed that she was low in Folate and Vitamin B12. Weeks of taking Vitamin B Complex didn't help her symptoms at all. A little more research helped Pam understand that not all B vitamins are the same - some are synthetic while other options are natural and in methylated forms. Inspecting the B Complex vitamin she'd been taking, she discovered that the B12 was in the cyanocobalamin form and the folic acid was also synthetic. You might think the mystery was solved at this point, but after finding a methylated B Complex at the local health food store, and taking it for several weeks, her symptoms persisted. She increased her dosage, but after several weeks, she felt even worse.  Her labs showed that she was deficient in B vitamins, so why weren't her supplements working?   The Investigation This is something I commonly see and while B vitamins are wonderful, they come in many forms but they are not ‘one size fits all.' And there is another misconception - people believe that because B vitamins are water soluble, they can't hurt anyone because the body will expel what it doesn't use. This isn't the whole story.    How Methylation Works The body has a process called methylation. This is a biochemical process where there is a transfer of four atoms - one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (CH3) from one substance to another. This process happens all the time, every second. When its optimal it has a significant positive impact on many biochemical reactions in the body that regulate all types of activities. Methylation is needed for neurotransmitter production, detoxification, histamine metabolism, estrogen metabolism, fat metabolism, cellular energy, eye health, and immune balancing. Essentially, if you think of the body as a machine, then methylation (and demethylation) are the gears that trigger the different systems in the body.  Two important methyl donors (nutrients that keep methylation moving) are methylated folate (also known as methyltetrahydrofolate or 5 MTHF) and methylcobalamin (methylated B12). It's worth noting that there is a gene called the MTHFR gene (which we've talked about in Episode 34) which makes it harder to convert folic acid from foods or supplements into active form.    Understanding the Role of the MTHFR Gene in Methylation The process of methylation is quite complex. We have about 30 enzymes that are part of the methylation cycle pathway. The MTHFR gene is only one piece of the puzzle. And, while the MTHFR being off can cause issues with methylation, those other enzymes can also be a factor (sometimes a major factor).   Balancing Methylation You may have heard that methylation is all about taking methyl folate or methyl B12 but there is so much more to it.  Think of methylation (and methyl donors, specifically) as a bell shaped curve. You want to be somewhere at the top of the curve to be in balance. If you are lower on the left side of the curve, that is considered less methylation or being an under methylator. If you are lower on the right side of the curve, that would be considered too much methylation or being an over methylator. So many doctors don't realize this and think more is better. More is not always better, balanced is what you want to aim for.   Symptoms of Unbalanced Methylation When you are not in balance (in either over methylation or under methylation) you can experience symptoms. And, taking more B vitamins (especially the wrong kind) may make things worse - even if you're taking methyl folate and methyl B12 (considered to be the best). There are tons of issues with sub optimal methylation and some can actually be the same when you are an over or an under methylator Anxiety Itchy skin Brain fog Mood changes Fatigue Jitteriness Allergies Immune challenges Environmental sensitivities  And many more…   How to know if you are an over or an under methylator? Looking at genetics can help but genetics don't actually show what is expressing and how it's affecting metabolism itself. I like to look at specific biomarkers to see what the body is doing rather than just looking at the genetics which can be a bit deceiving. For example, someone with MTHFR may not actually need more methyl folate. The good news is that there is a simple blood test. It's called the Histamine Determination Whole Blood Test. This lab test can be done at Labcorp. It is really helpful in determining if you are an under or over methylator. If the level is high, you are an under-methylator. If it's low, you're an over-methylator. This test is done at many labs but from everything that I have learned about it, it's something that is only accurate at Labcorp and needs to be sent there. As with most tests, there is a lab range and an optimal range.I made a handout on how you can check your methylation status. Based on those results, I detail which B Vitamins would be best for you.    Supporting Overmethylation and Under-methylation Once you find out your levels, if you are an under-methylator, take more methyl donors such as: Methylated Folate Methylcobalamin If you are an over-methylator, take less methyl donors and look for ingredients such as: Folinic acid Hydroxocobalamin Adenosylcobalamin   Mystery Solved If you are taking B vitamins and feel off, perhaps you are not taking the right ones. This can also happen with multivitamins. If you feel upregulated or like there is something under your skin that may be a sign of being over methylated. If you are very sensitive to chemicals, while there can be many things related here, methylation also plays a large role so please take a look at this. This was the case for Pam. We ran her labs and she was very low indicating that she is an over-methylator. We changed her B vitamins and she felt a huge difference in her energy and brain fog.   Eliminating Health Mysteries For Pam we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. It pays you. 4. Talk to your functional medicine or functional nutrition specialist about optimal form requirements for each nutrient. For example, folate formally referred to as folacin is found naturally in foods as folate. Folic acid is the manmade version sold as supplements and added to fortified foods. Folate is a B-vitamin that is absolutely critical for cell growth and metabolism and it's very important for pregnant women and women in childbearing age because it reduces the risk of brain and spine defects in a baby's brain. Folate is deficiencies are also common in people who have digestive issues, kidney or liver disease or those who abuse alcohol. Folate needs to be converted by the body into its metabolically active form which is 5-methyltetrahydrofolate or 5-MTHF. If folate is not converted into 5-MTHF form, it's not metabolically active. There are enzymes in the body that control this conversion. Synthetic folic acid is converted into dihydrofolate which is then converted into tetrahydrofolate, which is converted into 10-Formyl-THF, which is then converted into 5,10 Methenyl-THF, which is then converted into 5,10 Methylene THF which is finally converted into 5-MTHF.  The reason this is important is because roughly 35-40% of people have a gene variant or single nucleotide polymorphism that interferes with or impairs their ability to convert folate into its active form. Individuals with this gene variant would require a multivitamin with the metabolically active form of folate 5-MTHF. Research has shown that 5-MTHF has been shown in studies to be almost 7 times more biologically active than folic acid. Remember that the labels you're reading on supplement bottles and products sold in the US are based upon Recommended Daily Allowances and average requirements as established by the United States federal government and these standards were set many, many years ago.  These averages do not take into account the underlying health issues that may make your nutrient requirements higher. For example, people with heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes have different nutrient requirements for optimal health, cellular metabolism and keeping those conditions under control. Older adults and elderly absolutely have different nutrient requirements. Those who take certain medications may need higher potency (we talked about that in Episode 1). So you want to be tuned into potency.5. Before Camille and her husband, Dr. Jason Hammond, co-founded in 2005 the Cade Foundation, Camille practiced as a General Practitioner for several years. Surprisingly, Ashley's autoimmune diseases are not the culprits for her infertile diagnosis; PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is to blame, as well as male-factor.Ashley's TTC journey to motherhood began at a time when she had her life perfectly planned and executed. Finished grad school, married to the love of her life, and a place to call home. But that quickly changed after stopping birth control to try and conceive naturally. Within a matter of months, Ashley was diagnosed with PCOS. Maiclaire became pregnant naturally really quickly, but miscarried at nearly 12 weeks. She and her husband then started fertility treatments with IUI. She got pregnant with the second Intrauterine insemination, but sadly miscarried at 9 weeks. Maiclaire completed 5 rounds of IVF. Her first 3 cycles did not produce any blastocysts, so she has never been able to do an embryo transfer. Recently, 3 of her blastocysts were sent for PGS testing. PGS testing: Pre-implantation genetic screening, also known as comprehensive chromosome screening or CCS, is a genetic test designed to examine embryos for chromosomal abnormalities. Embryos are biopsied at the blastocyst stage and all the chromosomes are examined.We also discuss egg donorship and epigenetics."After the 2 miscarriages and the 2nd IVF cycle with no embryos, I was in a really low place and I was frustrated that no one talks about infertility and recurrent loss so I wrote my book "prequel to parenthood: an infertility story". The book aims to raise awareness about infertility and miscarriage. I wrote it to help others going through this crazy infertility world, but also for those supporting them. One of the most important chapters I wrote is about things people say when they mean well, but it's not well. One of the most common hormone imbalances in fertility care is progesterone.Progesterone means to promote gestation --or the hormone that promotes a healthy preganncy. You may have low progesterone if you do not ovulate, if you have fertile mucus during the luteal or post-ovulatory phase or if the luteal phase is less than 11 days. Some symptoms of low progesterone include, but are not limited to:-mid-cycle spotting-cycles less than 25 days-short luteal phase-lack of a BBT temperature spike, or instability of temperatures during the luteal phase-spotting before your cycle starts-night sweats, hot flashes-insomnia, especially in the luteal phase-spotting just before your cycle starts for a few days-long, heavy, prolonged menstrual cycle and flow.Remember, it is the BALANCE of the progesterone --the YIN hormone and the estrogen ==the YANG hormone, that is important. Adapted by Dr. Luterbach from Christmas Kale Salad from www.nourishingmeals.comSalad:1 large bunch of your favourite type of kale, chopped (remove large stems)1/4 purple onion, thinly sliced1/4 cup dried cranberries 1 large, ripe pomegranate peeled1/2 small can of mandarin oranges1/2 cup pecans, roastedDressing:1/4 cup orange juice1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar1 teaspoon Dijon mustard2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon sea saltPlace the kale in to a large serving bowl. Add the onions and cranberries; set aside. To make the dressing, place all of the ingredients into a small jar, cover, and shake. Pour dressing over the salad and massage into the kale to soften the kale and breakdown the cell walls. Massaging your kale with a salad dressing will partially digest it for you, increasing nutrient availability.  Add the roasted pecans just before serving so they remain crunchy! Enjoy!

The Case:  Valerie is 39 and she manages her stress with meditation and a bedtime routine. Waking up frequently throughout the night is a form of insomnia - the most common sleep disorder in America. The skin processes these differently than if they were ingested - these toxins don’t have the benefit of being filtered and exported by the liver.  Start by Avoiding Toxins The first step in detoxification is to decrease exposure to toxins. There’s no point in cleansing the liver if it is still having to deal with daily inundation of toxins. While it may seem like an impossible task, given how bombarded we are with toxins, it is possible to decrease your exposure.  Drink well filtered water.  Select primarily organic produce.  Reduce (or eliminate) processed foods.  Use clean beauty products (make sure they’re really clean and not green-washed).    Get Tested for Heavy Metals and Toxins In order to properly fix the problem, you need to see the whole picture. There are certain heavy metals you want to test for. Mercury is the most likely culprit causing sleep disorders. Mercury toxicity can come from a variety of sources, including shellfish, large migratory fish (like Tuna), the old fillings in your teeth, even the air we breathe so it’s an important one to be tested for.    Traditional Liver Tests May Not Tell the Whole Story Understanding the strain your liver is under, isn’t always fully revealed through the liver test a traditional doctor might do. These tests are useful in confirming that there is an issue with the liver, but it doesn’t point to which function the liver is struggling to perform. There are two phases of function for the liver. First it must process or detox the toxins and then it must expel or excrete them. If you don’t know which of these functions need support, then you can’t properly treat the issue.    Tests for Liver Health Wendy likes to use genetic testing for solving questions about the liver. While the test itself is not going to tell you what’s going on right now, the data can be input to diagnostic apps like (Sterling’s App) to understand whether you might have the genes that could result in your liver needing more support. Other tests for liver function include testing hair, urine, or stool.    How to do a Liver Cleanse There are two approaches to the liver cleanse, but both start with decreasing exposure. After that, you can work with a health practitioner who can conduct tests so that the cleanse can be laser focused on specific toxins. Wendy says that there is the option of doing a ‘shotgun’ approach where you do a general cleanse targeting most likely culprits. Most liver cleanses involve a dietary shift, specific supplements for liver flushing and gallbladder flushing, and may also include a daily coffee enema. Finally, it’s good to sweat. Sweat helps carry toxins out but not all sweat is created equal. When you're sweating due to exercise you're in sympathetic mode (fight or flight mode) and you need to be in parasympathetic mode of rest, relaxation, digestive state in order to detox. Infrared saunas are good for this.    Detox reactions while Cleansing Some people experience detox reactions when doing a liver cleanse. This may be because they don’t generate enough bile to assist in the excretion of the toxins or because the body is overcome with the process of the detox. Sometimes, the body may release one toxin first which can result in an imbalance that the body is not used to. It’s important to take it slowly and be patient. The body will release toxins as it’s ready. Some people don’t detox very well. For those people, it’s important to work with a professional so that you can be testing as you go and targeting strategically.    Mystery Solved In Valerie’s case, the clues led us right to excess exposure to toxins and heavy metals. Before we could treat this issue, we had to correct what had caused the problem. There is no point in detoxing if you’re continuing to be exposed to toxins. We adjusted her diet by dramatically reducing the amount of processed food she was eating and added in whole grains, more fruits and veggies. She started to select more organic food especially when it came to her meat and dairy choices. We also removed toxins from her daily routine by shifting away from some of the personal care products and cleaning products she was using. She immediately felt lighter and more energetic and she hadn’t even started the cleanse.    To help her get back to a better sleep pattern, we started the detoxification process with a product called Bitter X. And, because we had insights thanks to her DNA tests, we knew we had to include B vitamins because her body was genetically predisposed to hang on to toxins. Are you worried about hair loss? Let’s take a look at both causes and cures. And there can be many causes, from hormonal imbalances due to under active thyroid, drugs, pharmaceuticals, and poor diet, especially too few B complex vitamins, Vitamin C, zinc, sulfur, and iron. But if you find you’re losing hair at a rapid rate, don't panic. It’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs each day. There is a strong link between anxiety and hair loss, especially excess shedding of hair at the telogen stage, which can be made much worse by worrying about it. It’s time to go through a rational process of elimination to discover possible causes then you can do what’s necessary to correct the shedding. Ask yourself the following questions: Are you taking any medication such as the birth control pill or artificially based hormone-replacement therapy? These are common causes of thinning hair, which can be corrected by stopping the drugs and turning to bio-identical hormone replacements under the guidance of a knowledgeable health practitioner. Anti-coagulants, cortisone, and diet pills such as amphetamines are also anathema to hair health. So is boric acid, which stupidly gets added to shampoos, skincare products, ointments for cuts and burns—even eye baths—so read labels carefuly before you buy. Thyroid medication can be a culprit—shift to natural thyroid treatments instead. So can simple aspirin, if you take as many as one or two a day. Now, let me with share you what I have learned over the years about how to stop hair loss: Have you had major illnesses or traumas in your life recently? Shock, illness, and emotional worry can bring about heavy shedding of telogen hairs. This is called telogen effluvium. Help can be had from vitamin supplements—more about this in a moment—and from eating organic liver often. Even getting enough physical activity to help you deal with stressors in your life can help. dramatically. Is is your scalp tight or loose when you put your fingers into it? Start giving yourself a daily scalp massage. And start brushing the old fashioned way—fifty strokes each day. I do myself, and it works. Are you anemic? Women, who suffer from anemia far more often than men do, frequently find their hair has thinned greatly. Have a serum iron test and a total iron-binding capacity test done to find out. Is your hair breaking off near the roots from over-processing, sun bleaching, or too much heat on it? This is easy to detect. If you sit in front of a mirror with the light coming from behind, you’ll be able to see a myriad of tiny hairs standing up out of the scalp no longer than a half to three quarters of an inch. If you examine them carefully, you’ll find that even these short hairs are damaged, with split ends. Consider cutting your hair shorter until the damaged hair has grown out and healthy hair shafts replace it. Have you recently been pregnant? Women often lose hair during pregnancy. It may be the result of hormonal changes or some kind of subclinical vitamin or mineral deficiency—often zinc as it is very low in most women just after childbirth. Happily this condition usually disappears a few weeks after the baby is born, provided your diet is adequate and you are generally well. Do you wear your hair pulled back, or have you been putting rollers in too tightly? A common cause of hair loss is simple traction caused by a tightly wrapped rubber band around a ponytail, or curlers that are too tight. The pull on the hair interferes with proper circulation there and results in damage to the hair follicles, which shed their hairs. If this is the case, you need to change your hairstyle, stop rolling curlers tightly, and give yourself daily massage or treatment with an electric vibrator. If you are using a nylon-bristled brush, rollers with brushes in them, or a too fine-toothed comb, you should replace them as they can exacerbate hair loss. Most important of all—Look to your diet: Eat plenty of foods high in biotin and take biotin supplements. Biotin is needed for healthy hair and skin and to help prevent hair loss. Good food sources include brewers yeast, brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, sunflower seeds, and raw organic walnuts. Don’t eat raw eggs until hair loss has stopped.  You see, because raw eggs contain a protein that binds biotin and prevents it from being absorbed. Cooked free-range eggs are okay. Rinsing your hair with Kombucha tea is far more effective than all the fancy products sold in salons for hair growth and regeneration. It might even prevent hair greying. You can also use apple cider vinegar and sage tea as a rinse to encourage hair growth. Horsetail tea is the best source of silica, which all of us need for strong, shiny hair, and healthy nails. BEST HAIR GROWTH SUPPLEMENTS Good quality Omege-3 oils improve hair texture and help prevent hair loss and damage. Recently there was an article that I found on ccn.com about a potential link that was found between folic acid and autism. 2 years ago, I decided I was fed up with supplements. Just freakin' tired of all the tablets, capsules, pills, powders and oils. And bottles. Lots and lots of plastic bottles scattered everywhere. I distinctly remember the day I finally decided something needed to change. It was when I swung open the door of my refrigerator to dive into my daily regimen of vitamins, antioxidants, nutrients, micronutrients, fish oils... ...and I realized it was getting overwhelming. Sure, it was better living through science, but it was anything but simple. I'm sure you've experienced the same thing. You open what seems like nearly a dozen different bottles to launch into your morning supplement regimen.... ...or you pack your suitcase to travel and struggle to prioritize which bottles to shove into your limited suitcase space... ...or you spend an inordinate amount of your precious time tracking, ordering and restocking your vitamin D or your fish oil, or your greens, or your multi-vitamin or your minerals or your antioxidants or your amino acids... You get the idea. Supplement clutter, supplement confusion and utter lack of supplement simplicity. ------------------------------------ 9 Reasons You May Not Want To Throw Out All Your Supplements Now don't get me wrong. I don't think supplements are an inconvenient and unnecessary curse that should simply all be tossed out. There is certainly evidence that , but even if you're eating a “healthy” diet, studies have shown that it is nearly impossible in our modern era to get all our nutrients, vitamins and minerals only from food. For example, a : "Large portions of the population had total usual intakes below the estimated average requirement for vitamins A (35%), C (31%), D (74%), and E (67%) as well as calcium (39%) and magnesium (46%). Only 0%, 8%, and 33% of the population had total usual intakes of potassium, choline, and vitamin K above the adequate intake when food and multivitamin use was considered. The percentage of the population with total intakes greater than the tolerable upper intake level (UL) was very low for all nutrients..." "...Conclusions: In large proportions of the population, micronutrient sufficiency is currently not being achieved through food solutions for several essential vitamins and minerals. Use of age- and gender-specific multivitamin supplements may serve as a practical means to increase the micronutrient status in subpopulations of Americans while not increasing intakes above the upper intake level." So how on earth could this be? Is the planet broken or something? There's actually nine reasons for the failure of modern diets to supply our bodies with all the nutrients we need. First, modern commercial farming practices strip our precious soil of nutrients. When plants are repeatedly grown on the same land for year-after-year (a relatively new phenomenon in agriculture that beats up our land but gives us lots and lots of calories), the overused soil loses it's nutrients faster than they can be replaced.  Over time, the plants have fewer nutrients to grow, so the farmers are forced to fertilize.  Fertilizer does indeed contain enough nutrition for a plant to survive until harvesting, but not enough nutrients to support your body's nutrient needs. As discussed in the excellent book "", this results in plants that up to 75% fewer micronutrients. This problem is compounded by the fact that most plants are not harvested fresh, and the nutrients degrade as they often sit on airplanes, trucks, shelves, and counters for weeks before they arrive on your plate. Second, most , and not maximum nutrients, and because of this much of your fresh produce that us humans would have historically relied upon for nutrients are instead .  And of course, this is all passed on to the animals (including you!) that are eating the plants. For example,  found copper levels have dropped by 90% in dairy, 55% in meat, and 76% in vegetables! Third, pesticides are making this problem even worse.  Because polyphenols are produced as a defense against bugs and pathogens, . To make matters even more frustrating, even if you buy organic plants,  So unless you're going out of your way to grow your own fresh fruits and vegetables in a pristine backyard garden which contains soil that you've treated with added minerals, you are at a huge risk for malnourishment and nutrient deficiency that adversely affects your performance, fat loss, recovery, digestion, brain, sleep, and hormone balance. Fourth, it's not just nutrient-poor plants that are affecting the nutrient status of the actual animals we rely upon for food, but it's also what many of those animals are being fed - especially grains. Compared to grass-fed meat, grain-fed meat is , but unfortunately, eating high-quality, organic grass-fed (and grass-finished) meat, pastured pork and naturally raised poultry is simply not a reality for many people living in urban environments or frequently traveling. Fifth, the nutrients in your food aren't the only things that are disappearing - your liquids are being affected too. Unless you're drinking from your own well, or relying upon fancy mineralized water such as Pellegrino, Perrier and Gerolsteiner, your bottled water, filter water and tap water is also  - and if does indeed contain adequate minerals, these are typically accompanied by enormous levels of flouride and chlorine. So this means that unless you want to spend lots and lots of money on fancy water, you are stuck in a situation where you must filter your water to get rid of the dangerous stuff, then figure out other methods, such as supplementation, to get the minerals you'd normally be getting from the water. Unfortunately, milk is not much better than water. The majority of nutrients in milk are found in the fat, so while , most of us simply don't have ready access to it, especially at the typical grocery store.  In addition, pasteurization can destroy many of the nutrients in both skim and full fat milk.  , which increases your nutrient needs even more, creating a vicious cycle. So whether it's due to nutrient-poor plants, nutrient-poor animals, nutrient-poor milk, or nutrient-poor water, most diets are now so micronutrient deficient that they require on average . In other words, in our modern era, you would need to be stuffing your face all day long to actually get what your body needs, and this does not into account the fact that if you are trying to lose weight by restricting calories or if you are a physically active person like a triathlete, marathoner, Crossfitter, weightlifter, or other exercise enthusiast, then your risk of nutrient deficiency is going to be even higher!  In other words, if you are A) trying to lose weight by not stuffing your body full of excessive calories or B) an athlete  or physically active person, then you're pretty much guaranteed to be at a constantly malnourished nutrient deficit (unless you figure out a way to somehow squeeze in all those added nutrients). The older you get, the fewer nutrients you absorb, so as you age, the worse things become. And that's reasons six (weight loss), seven (exercise) and eight (age) that you may need a little help over and above what you'd get from food. So let's say you dig a well, grow your own produce, milk your own goats, eat strictly grass-fed meat and wild-caught fish, you're relatively young and you avoid excessive physical activity or calorie restriction for weight loss. Then you're safe, right? No added nutrients necessary, right? The unfortunate ninth fact is that unless you live on a pristine mountaintop in the Himalayas, you're exposed every day to airborne pollutants, xenoestrogens from plastics and BPA, environmental toxins, mold, industrial solvents, electromagnetic fields, heavy metals, fluorescent lighting, constant stress, sleep disruption and a host of other modern-day assailants upon your biology. Your body simply wasn't mean to deal with these physiological stressors - all of which vastly increase your need for nutrients to help you fight the daily battle. So for the nine reasons above - depleted soil, nutrient-poor produce, pesticides, conventional meat, subpar water and milk, weight loss, physical activity, age, and our modern post-industrial living environment, you definitely shouldn't throw out all your supplements. --------------------------------------- Is It Possible For Supplements To Be Simpler? So this was the conundrum I found myself in two years ago as I stood in front of my refrigerator door and sighed in frustration at the dizzying array of supplements and bottles. I knew that because of my extremely active lifestyle and the other reasons I just listed that I couldn't and shouldn't just throw out all my supplements. I knew that I needed to keep my precious nutrients topped off for better performance, faster recovery, optimized fat burning, clean digestion, superior mental focus, better sleep and hormone balance... ...but I also knew that I was sick and tired of having to lug around a bunch of bottles, painstakingly use a weekly pill box to keep track of my supplements like an old man tracks his medication, and constantly be headed over to Amazon or some other website to re-order something I was running low in.  And then there was that gnawing worry at the back of my mind that any of these supplements I was ingesting could be laced with something like chemicals, toxins, metals or illegal-performance enhancing drugs that could potentially damage my body, put pie in my face and get me banned from competing in a sanctioned sport like triathlon. I wanted better living through science. But I also desperately needed more simplicity. And I knew that somewhere, somehow, there must be a way to have both: the ultimate combination of science and simplicity. --------------------------------------- Seven Criteria a Multivitamin Must Have At that point, I embarked upon my quest to discover the greatest multivitamin on the face of the planet - something that could cover all my bases from a nutrient standpoint without requiring a dizzying, inconvenient and exhausting array of pills, bottles and packets. After all, that's kind of the definition of a multivitamin, right? It supposed to cover multiple needs. As a nutritionist, personal trainer, exercise physiologist and strength and conditioning coach with strict standards about what I find acceptable for myself or my clients to ingest, I also had a very distinct set of criteria that I knew a multivitamin must have - seven criteria to be precise... --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #1: Capsules, Not Tablets Before completely shoving tablets under the bus, I'll acknowledge the two benefits tablets possess. First, because tablets are pressed together so hard, more nutrients can fill the same amount of space than you can put into a capsule. Second, it’s cheaper to make tablets than capsules. There are several drawbacks, however, to using tablets. First, tablets are much harder to digest. Because tablets are packed together so tightly and need far more binders and diluents to keep them together, it takes much longer for them to break down in the digestive system. A capsule, on the other hand, breaks down within just minutes of hitting your digestive tract. This is important because of the little known fact that most of the nutrients in a multivitamin actually need to be absorbed in your stomach. When a tablet takes too long to break down in the stomach, and passes on to your intestinal tract, its content will be far less broken down and absorbed. And that means expensive pee. Tablets also need lots of extra nasty ingredients, such as binders, lubricants, coatings, disintegrants, and other excipients. These ingredients must be added to make the tablet stay together, to make the tablet shiny, and to make the tablet break apart. Tablet press machines compact the powdered nutrients together (that have already been mixed with binders and lubricants) with a tremendous amount of force. Then, to make the tablets shiny and easier to swallow, the tablets are often sprayed with coatings such as shellac (just like the shellac found on furniture but instead labeled “pharmaceutical glaze”) or coated with “vegetable protein,” (most often a protein derived from GMO corn). Yuk. I'll take a capsule, please. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #2: One Morning Dose & One Evening Dose Your body needs nutrients throughout the course of the day, not just one huge shotgun dose when you get out of bed in the morning or before you go to bed at night. So I needed to find a multivitamin designed in such a way that it delivered important nutrients for daily metabolism and activity in the morning dose, and important nutrients for recovery, rest, and sleep in the evening dose, but without a dizzying array of capsules. I'll admit that it does take slightly more discipline to take a multivitamin twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening – but it’s a much better way to deliver the optimal nutrients at the optimal times throughout the day. After all, you'd rarely eat only breakfast or only dinner, right? I figure if I can handle at least two meals, I can handle two supplement doses - as long it's not a dozen different bottles of stuff. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #3: Low Number of Capsules One extremely inconvenient factor in most multivitamin formulas out there is the number of capsules necessary for daily use if you truly are going to be able to get all the nutrients that you need from a single formula. I think that taking three capsules in the morning and three capsules in the evening is practical and doable for me. Anything less than the six capsules per day can significantly reduce the efficacy of a multivitamin formula, but once you get over six capsules, it becomes a pain to manage, difficult to swallow, and a hassle to travel with. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #4: Vegan & Vegetarian Friendly Capsules Most capsule-based multivitamins use capsules made from bovine gelatin - that's cow. And although I do not personally eat a plant-based diet, I have many clients who are either vegan or vegetarian. So I wanted the actual capsule material to be made from the best alternative to cattle-based bovine gelatin. The ideal answer would be a capsule made of cellulose, which is a natural, vegetable-based material, and is pure plant fiber (usually from pine trees). In other words, I know it's important to many of my clients and friends that no animals be harmed in the formulation of a good multivitamin. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #5: No Magnesium Stearate or Other Nasty Fillers Magnesium stearate is probably the most common flowing agent that you will find in the “Other Ingredients” section on the Supplement Facts box on any multivitamin label. Magnesium stearate is a lubricant that is used to manufacture nutritional supplements to help powders flow through manufacturing equipment faster. It allows more tablets to be manufactured per hour and is therefore a cost-savings choice for a manufacturer. However, studies have shown that magnesium stearate can reduce the absorption rate of some nutrients. It literally wraps around nutrients and keeps them from being absorbed in the digestive tract. So although magnesium stearate is not necessarily harmful, it can vastly reduce the effectiveness of the nutritional supplements that you are taking. Instead, I'd rather see a multivitamin use something like calcium laurate, which helps powders flow through the manufacturing equipment, but is a completely naturally-occurring material that does not inhibit absorption. Calcium laurate is not as effective of a flowing agent as magnesium stearate is, so products can’t be manufactured as fast, but it can certainly get the job done without the need to use magnesium stearate. When it is necessary to fill the capsule with something in addition to a nutrient or botanical, I'd rather see a multivitamin manufacturer use magnesium citrate, a the pure element reacted with pure citric acid; cellulose, a pure plant fiber, magnesium citrate-laurate, a pure element reacted with citric acid and lauric acid (a small fat molecule that does not inhibit absorption), silica, a pure element found in sand, and the amino acid leucine. Any of these fillers are completely natural and allow you to take a multivitamin without worrying about unnatural or harmful ingredients you might be ingesting. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #6: No GMO's For  personal health and longevity reasons, and for consideration of the earth's environment, I avoid like the plague any product that contains Genetically Modified Organisms (known as GMOs). Unfortunately, most multivitamins contain GMO-laden ingredients - as well as corn, gluten, and some of the other nasty fillers mentioned earlier. This requires that any multivitamin I would ever use would need to closely analyzed by the manufacturer and guaranteed to be absolutely certain that none of ingredients are derived from GMO sources nor that they utilize GMOs in their production. --------------------------------------- My Multivitamin Criteria #7: Certified to Have No Banned Ingredients As I mentioned, it's very important to me that any supplement I take is not only CGMP certified (manufactured in a certified good manufacturing practices facility to ensure purity), but is also free of any ingredients that would get me banned from competing in triathlons, or taint my body with unnatural steroids or hormones. For years, I've been under the impression that something called an "NSF For Sport" certification was the strictest, third-party verification standard by which to judge whether a supplement contains these potentially illegal or banned ingredients. Turns out, I was wrong.   There's something even more strict than NSF. And that is Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the pharmaceutical regulatory agency of Australia. Considered the toughest regulatory agency in the world, the TGA inspection and certification is conducted at a pharmaceutical level standard. Yes, that means the supplements certified by the TGA are verified to be as pure as an actual pharmaceutical drug. For me to hold a multivitamin to as strict a standard as a TGA certification would be tough. Only a handful of U.S. companies are able to achieve the status of holding a TGA certification and there is really only one dietary supplement company in the U.S. that ever has completed all three strict levels of a TGA certification, since the certification requires not only a review of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) every two years, but also on-site inspection of every aspect of a multivitamin's quality control, laboratory procedures, pharmaceutical good manufacturing practices, and standard operating procedures. But that's not all. I'd also prefer for a multivitamin to be certified by Informed Choice. Informed Choice requires five samples from three different production runs of product to be tested, which would further guarantee, because of extremely rigid raw material and finished product testing and production procedures, absolutely no ingredient banned by any amateur or professional organization. In other words, I want rock-solid, bulletproof confidence that I can hand any multivitamin that I endorse or personally use to the best athlete on the face of the planet with zero reservations about whether or not the multivitamin is pure or might get them banned. --------------------------------------- Notoriously Neglected Ingredients That A Multivitamin Must Have I also know that there are notoriously neglected ingredients in most multivitamin complexes that make them barely scratch the surface of your true nutrient needs, especially if you're a hard charging athlete, exercise enthusiast, an aging person, a busy professional living a CEO-esque lifestyle, or anyone else with advanced nutrient needs. Take Vitamin D, for example. The 200-400IU of Vitamin D found in most popular multivitamins is basically enough to keep a child from getting rickets. This is not even close enough to support optimal hormonal balance and physical or mental performance. Problem is, the multivitamins that actually do indeed have the 2000+IU per day of Vitamin D that I like to see do not include optimal amounts of Vitamin A or Vitamin K to allow for ideal absorption and utilization of Vitamin D, or reduced risk of Vitamin D toxicity. Or take Vitamin K - a crucial fat soluble vitamin usually found in complete zero amounts in a multivitamin. The body actually needs nearly 400mcg per day of Vitamin K to support bone health, calcium and magnesium balance, and vitamin D absorption, among a host of other metabolic and immune-boosting functions. Yet strangely enough, it's not included at all in most multivitamins. So what else is neglected in most multivitamins that I searched for on my quest to find the greatest multivitamin on the face of the planet? 1. Vitamin B6, B12 and B2 In The Correct Form The bioactive form of Vitamin B6 is Pyridoxal 5’-Phosphate. But the most common form found in most multivitamins is Pyridoxine HCl, which is not the active form of Vitamin B6. So the Pyridoxal 5’-Phosphate is a must-have in my opinion. The most common form of Vitamin B12 used in nutritional supplements and processed foods is cyanocobalamin. Cyanocobalamin, however, is absorbed at a much lower rate than methylcobalamin, which is the form of vitamin B12 that a multivitamin should actually have. Riboflavin 5’-Phosphate is the bioactive form of vitamin B2, but unfortunately Riboflavin HCl is the form commonly used in multivitamins, and that form needs to be converted in an extra step in the liver to the active form. Why do most multivitamins cut corners on these forms of Vitamin B? They're either uninformed, or going for the cheap alternative. 2. Folate In The Correct Form  Folic acid is the most common form of folate used in nutritional supplements and fortified foods. However, a significant percentage of the population has trouble converting folic acid to folate, which is the natural form found in foods and in the body. A good multivitamin should use a form of folate called  l-5-methyltetrahydrofolate to ensure folate is absorbed. It does cost considerably more than folic acid, but again, I only want a multivitamin with ingredients that work - not that just look pretty on a label and then give me expensive pee. 3. Minerals That Are Actually Absorbable Minerals by themselves are poorly absorbed, but when bound to an amino acid (also called a "mineral chelate") they are absorbed much better. Technically the most absorbable form of a mineral is the bisglycinate chelate form, and to avoid the minerals in a multivitamin simply creating expensive pee, I would specifically like to see calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, manganese, chromium, and molybdenum minerals in a chelated form. 4. Curcumin That Is Actually Absorbable Curcumin is one of my favorite supplements, and has received a lot of attention recently as a potent natural anti-inflammatory nutrient that can control brain and muscle inflammation, positively affect muscle health, joint structure and function, and antioxidant activity in the gut, liver, and heart. But the trouble with most curcumin ingredients is that they are extremely poorly absorbed. However, there is one form of curcumin called the phytosome form which was developed by the researchers in Milan, Italy, and has been shown to be absorbed 29 times better than a standard curcumin extract. This is the only form of curcumin that I'd like to see in a multivitamin. 5. Green Tea Extract That Is Actually Absorbable Green tea is another powerful antioxidant that has been shown to have a mild effect on raising metabolic rate and improving fat oxidation. But like standard curcumin extracts, standard green tea extracts are not well absorbed either. But the same researchers who discovered the curcumin phyotosome have also developed green tea phytosome, which provides a much better absorbed form of green tea extract, and would also ideally be in a multivitamin. 6. Adaptogens Stress-fighting adaptogens are another notoriously missing component of most multivitamins, but in our hectic era are a must-have for sleep, de-stressing and hormone balance. One of the most potent adaptogenic compounds that I discovered in my multivitamin research to both lower cortisol levels and raise testosterone levels is called "Relora", and is a blend of magnolia officinalis and phellodendron amurense. If added to a multivitamin, it could also help curb cravings and stress-related eating, and help calm the mind and support rest and relaxation prior to bedtime. As a high intensity guy, this addition would be a very important to me as a necessary multivitamin ingredient. Remember - this all comes down to simplicity. This means that if you or I can't get our hands on a capsule-based, pure and safe, minimalist and simple multivitamin that provides everything I just described above... ...then it means we are instead forced to buy 6, 8, 10 or 12 different supplements to supply our daily nutrient needs and fill in all the "holes" the multivitamin isn't giving. --------------------------------------- Where A Tiny Town In North Idaho Fits In So that's what I've been doing over the past two years. I have been taking a deep, deep dive into educating myself on the wide world of nutrients, supplements, ingredients, fillers, formulations, encapsulation technology and every aspect that goes into creating a multivitamin. And I have literally been pulling my hair out and hitting dead-end after dead-end as I have been trying to hunt down something that meets my strict quality criteria for a multivitamin. Of course, I have also found it incredibly frustrating when my clients, or readers, or podcast listeners or me have to simply keep on taking a crazy number of supplements or buying an unbelievable number of bottles and spending inordinate amounts of money when it's so straightforward to see what a multivitamin that meets all our daily nutrients needs should really have (and not have!) in it. I've even gone so far as to consider simply hunting down the raw ingredients and formulating my own multivitamin. But frankly, I'm an author, an athlete and a teacher - and don't fancy myself as a supplement manufacturer. I just don't have a desire to get into that business.  I simply want a multivitamin that I can, with a clear conscience, recommend to you and also take myself. Is that asking too much? And then it happened. During one of the dozens and dozens of phone calls I made and countless hours attempting to hunt down the perfect multivitamin formulation, a raw ingredient manufacturer informed me of the existence of a new multivitamin formulation created by a company called "Thorne Research", in Dover, Idaho. That's right - just 60 miles from the front door of my house, in the tiny town of Dover, Idaho, are the Thorne Research facilities (pictured below). After months and months of searching, it turns out the solution could possibly be right in my own backyard. For over 30 years, Thorne Research has set the standard for exceptional formulations, quality and purity in the dietary supplement industry - and is considered the most respected nutritional supplements brand in the healthcare practitioner space. That's right - this is is the stuff physicians use with their patients. I'd actually heard of Thorne before, but always knew it was just for the fancy doctors and clinicians so I couldn't really access it or use it. So until recently, none of the coveted Thorne Research products were available for me or any other personal trainer to actually recommend to our clients, readers or listeners. Instead, these high-quality, private formulations were only available for physicians or dietitians to use with their patients, and only for certified health care providers to use with their clients. But then, in January 2014, Thorne Research created a new branch called "". What supplements are important to take when you are on Hormone Replacement Therapy? Certain nutrients are depleted during HRT and it is very important to replace those nutrients that are depleted.   First it is first important to eat a nutrient-dense diet. Triton Nutrition then recommends a multivitamin called Basic Multipro for Men or Basic Multipro for Women. 2 capsules twice a day is the general support dose. There is also a Performance Multivitamin for Men and for Women that is expanded.   For both men and women the two most important cofactors that you will need in addition to your multivitamin is magnesium and zinc. Triton Nutrition has Mag Powersorb and Zinc Glycinate. Both are in an amino acid chelate form, which is the most absorbable form for the body.   Women should take 2-3 capsules of the Mag Powersorb and 1-2 capsules of the Zinc Glycinate a day. If they have heavy workouts then they will need to increase the dosage up from there.   HRT also requires B vitamins supplementation in a certain form because it depletes your body's resources. Triton Nutrition's philosophy is to supply nutrients in the most absorbable, most absorbable form. You sometimes see B12 in the form of cyanocobolamin, but Triton Nutrition does not use that form, they use the active form called methylcobolamin. In Triton Nutrition's Neurokinetic Cream, the biologically active forms called methylcobolamin and hydroxocobolamin are used in the form of a topical cream. This should be applied to lean body parts, like forearms or lower legs at one pump, twice a day. If you are severely depleted in methyl donors, there is methylcobolamin and 5-MTHF, both active forms of the vitamin, and you may need a total of three pumps a day.   The reason this is called Neurokinetic Cream is because the forms found in the cream are important in the making of neurotransmitters and they are also important in the metabolism of the beautiful hormone biochemistry symphony. Hormone Replacement Therapy also depletes other B vitamins as well. If you are not getting enough in your food then you need to turn to a supplement. B6 is in the form Pyridoxyl 5'-Phosphate and B2 is in the form of Riboflavin 5'-Phosphate, which are the active forms. These chemicals are also called xenoestrogens because these toxins act like estrogens and throw off the balance of hormones in the body. Brain Health - Cognitive Function is important to remember in an athlete because when they train heavily, they will deplete their neurotransmitters. Robert Seik explains how two products can help the body manufacture neurotransmitters and improve mood, reaction time and mental focus.   Neurotransmitters are chemicals that the brain uses to signal other parts of the body. Dopamine is one of the main neurotransmitters in the body. In order to build Dopamine, you need to have the building blocks. This is the basis of two products from Triton Nutrition called Neurokinetic cream and Neuro Balance capsules. The Neuro Balance capsules contain several ingredients to help build several kinds of neurotransmitters, Dopamine being one of them, and these building blocks are the amino acids Tyrosine and Choline. We also need to support biochemical processes to make sure the amino acids are used properly, so trimethyl and dimethylglycine (DMG)  make sure that happens.   Also required for the manufacture of neurotransmitters is a group of B Vitamins, specifically B12. Neurokinetic cream is a good source of B12. Many think that we have to take in B12 by mouth, putting it under the tongue or swallowing a pill, but the absorption rate is very poor this way, so Neurokinetic cream was created, which is a lotion that puts the vitamins in a fat soluble form. This should be applied topically to lean areas of the body.   A typical dosage of the Neuro Balance is two capsules a day for athletes. For the Neurokinetic cream, athletes should take two pumps twice a day either on the forearms or on the lower legs. This cream is red in color so that when you apply it to lean areas of the body you can see it easily absorbed. We do not want this cream applied to fatty areas of the body because we don't want it to stay in the fatty tissue. We want it to be absorbed so that it travels to the tissues like our neural tissues and brain that are made up of a lot of fat. The Folic Acid that is used is not in the form of Folic Acid HCl or some other low absorption form. Instead the form used is the high absorption, high potency form called methyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF). This way, by using this form it gets to the brain. Athletes notice improved mood, mental focus and quicker reaction time. Why? Because that increase in Dopamine is going to improve fast twitch muscle fiber activity and improve overall athletic performance. B Vitamins have many important functions and are responsible for many biochemical reactions in the body. One very important function is B Vitamins for Energy. Without a full spectrum of B Vitamins we do not have energy. B Vitamins are necessary as co-factors to make hormones and neurotransmitters so that are brain can communicate and it affects our mood. We also need B Vitamins to help us detoxify.   The important thing is to make sure you get your B vitamins from a very nutrient dense diet. We promote the food first model. We talk about the Paleo diet and how it can help you achieve metabolic efficiency, but we often have to add supplements because our food does not have as many nutrients as we need. Also, athletes burn through these nutrients particularly because of energy expenditure and that's when B Vitamins are depleted.   There are times when athletes can over consume protein and it is important to know that protein depletes B Vitamins. When we have protein metabolism activated, B Vitamins are co-factors that are taking the amino acids from protein that is being broken down. These amino acids are then being used to make over 65,000 enzymes that our liver produces, to make tissue that need to be repaired from use.   Triton Nutrition has a special form called B-Energy Complex that follows GCMP standards and that delivers the nutrients in a form that is absorbable. For example Vitamin B-2, which is called riboflavin. Riboflavin HCl (Riboflavin Hydrochloride) is very inexpensive to produce and you will often see this form in many poor quality supplements, but it is poorly absorbed. Riboflavin-5'-Phosphate, which is the best form for us to absorb and utilize, which is the most abundant form found in nutrient dense foods is the form that Triton Nutrition uses.   Vitamin B-6 or Pyridoxine is often found in the form of Pyridoxine HCl in poor quality and cheap supplements. Again, this form is poorly absorbed so you aren't actually taking in the amount that you think you are. Triton Nutrition uses Pyridoxal-5'-Phosphate, which is the active form.   Vitamin B-1 or Thiamine can be found in the form Thiamine HCl, which is actually quite usable, but you also need to take the fat soluble form, which gets into the brain and that's called Benfotiamine. We need B Vitamins in the brain to make neurotransmitters. There is also Vitamin B-12 known as methylcobalamin, which is the active form of Vitamin B-12. If someone is very low in Vitamin B-12 they may need to take a sublingual tablet in order to boost their levels. Vitamin B-12 in the form of methylcobalamin can also be found in Triton Nutrition's NeuroKinetic Cream. The reason it is called NeuroKinetic Cream is because it has the necessary ingredients to make neurotransmitters. NeuroKinetic Cream also has 5-MTHF, a special form of Folic Acid.   The B-Energy Complex also contains Folic Acid, B-3 in two forms and B-5.
