Favour highlights that Pinterest users exhibit a higher purchasing power and are in a planning mindset, making their minimal time spent on the platform highly intentional for conversions compared to engagement-focused sites like TikTok or Facebook. Practical advice is offered on running various ad types—including image, video, carousel, catalog, and lead/quiz ads—along with technical specifications and the importance of claiming a website to utilize Pinterest's tagging system for superior analytics and targeting, such as act-alike audiences and zip code campaigns.Ultimately, we position Pinterest advertising as a valuable, data-driven strategy for businesses seeking a high return on time and investment.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Next Steps for Digital Marketing + SEO Services:>> Need SEO Services? For many, it's a digital scrapbook for wedding ideas, home decor inspiration, and tonight's dinner recipe. But what if this familiar facade conceals one of the most misunderstood and powerful marketing engines online? Behind the vision boards and DIY projects lies a platform built not on fleeting attention, but on deliberate intention. This episode reveals five surprising truths about Pinterest that defy conventional social media wisdom and highlight its unique, untapped value for businesses and marketers.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. The 90-Minute Paradox: Why Less Time on Platform Means More for BusinessIt's a counter-intuitive finding that stops most marketers in their tracks: Pinterest users spend significantly less time on the platform than users of other major networks.According to recent data, the average user spends just 1 hour and 31 minutes per month on Pinterest. Compare that to the time sinks of other platforms:• TikTok: 35 hours per month• Facebook: 29 hours per month• Instagram: 15 hours per monthThis isn't a sign of low engagement; it's a signal of high-intent, purposeful activity. Breaking it down, 91 minutes a month averages to just about 3 minutes per day. Users aren't there to endlessly scroll. In those three minutes, a user is on a mission: they might spend 30 seconds looking for an idea, a minute to find the right one, and the next minute to affirm it, save it for later, or click through to act on it immediately. This focused, goal-oriented behavior means every minute is packed with commercial intent."So if you're planning on Pinterest and you're spending less than 2 hours to be on a platform that's going to give you maximum return on your time and investment, it's worth it than spend 35 hours to do the same thing..."2. The Audience Isn't Just Browsing—They're Planning and They Have Buying PowerThe fundamental difference between Pinterest and other platforms is user mindset. While other networks thrive on a culture of passive "swiping," Pinterest is the go-to destination for active "planning." Users are there with the specific intention of preparing for something—whether it's an event, a book, a wedding, a shoe, a color, or a tip—which makes them uniquely receptive to relevant brand content and advertising. This high-intent audience also has significant financial leverage:• Approximately 45% of Pinterest users have an annual household income of at least $150,000.• Their purchasing power is 5% to 38% higher than on other social platforms. This combination of forward-looking intent and disposable income creates an environment where ads are not an interruption but a welcome part of the discovery process."It tells you that Pinterest is not a place that people are going to swipe. They're going there to plan. So when they're going there to plan, they're searching with the intention of purchasing something or planning for something."3. Forget "Lookalikes," Pinterest Is About "Actalikes"Most digital advertisers are familiar with "lookalike audiences"—the targeting method used by platforms like Meta to find users who share demographic traits with an existing customer base. Pinterest offers a more powerful alternative: the "actalike audience."An actalike audience is a group of users targeted based on their active, intentional behaviors. These are users who are thinking, planning, processing, doing, and responding. Rather than targeting people who simply look like your customers, you target people who act like them. This is a critical distinction. An actalike audience is inherently composed of users with proven intent and behavioral patterns that align with conversion. It targets an active mindset, not just a passive profile, suggesting a much higher probability of a positive outcome for advertisers.4. Your Content's Lifespan: A Marathon, Not a SprintThe ephemeral nature of social media content is a constant challenge for marketers. A post that takes hours to create can disappear from feeds in a matter of hours. Pinterest operates on a completely different timeline. The lifespan of content on Pinterest presents a stark contrast to its social media counterparts:• Pinterest Pin: 3.5 to 5 months• Instagram Post: 19 to 72 hoursContent on Pinterest functions less like a fleeting post and more like a long-term asset. Each pin acts as a durable entry point to your brand, continuing to drive traffic, discovery, and conversions for months on end. This turns content creation from a short-term sprint into a sustainable, long-term investment with compounding returns, much like traditional SEO.5. The Surprising Truth About Media OwnershipOn platforms like Instagram and TikTok, you are a perpetual tenant. You build your presence on rented land, but you never truly own your content or the space it occupies. Pinterest offers a unique and powerful path to digital property ownership. When you claim your website on Pinterest, you establish 100% ownership of your media on the platform. This is made possible by the Pinterest Tag—a piece of code on your website that connects your property to the platform, tracks conversions, and solidifies your ownership. This transforms your Pinterest business account from a simple social profile into a claimed media asset. The platform even provides a powerful tool to leverage this ownership. You can connect your Instagram business account and pull the last 365 days of content directly onto Pinterest. Think about the implications: you didn't own your content on Instagram, but now you have Instagram's content building an owned asset on Pinterest, all because you've claimed your website as a digital property."You don't own 100% of your media on Instagram... with Pinterest it's a beautiful place because when you claim your Pinterest account and you claim your website on Pinterest. What you've technically done is that you've claimed a property on an asset that you don't own but now you own..."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Conclusion: Rethinking Attention vs. IntentionFor years, the digital marketing world has been obsessed with the attention economy—a relentless race for more screen time, more views, and more hours spent scrolling. Pinterest proves that there is a more valuable currency: intention. Its true power lies not in capturing endless hours of passive attention, but in connecting with a high-value audience during their most decisive planning and purchasing moments. The platform's unique combination of high intent, powerful demographics, action-based targeting, and content longevity makes it an unparalleled tool for businesses. As you plan your next marketing strategy, ask yourself this: What could your business achieve if you focused less on the attention economy and more on the intention economy?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The labor market has swung from the Great Resignation to “job hugging,” where workers cling to their roles out of fear of AI-driven layoffs and inflation, crushing engagement and accelerating burnout. At the same time, OpenAI is accused of suppressing research showing job losses, ignoring internal warnings about chatbot mental health risks, and bleeding safety staff, while state Attorneys General fire off an opening salvo likening unchecked AI harms to an opioid crisis-in-the-making.The AI boom is now colliding with reality. Environmental groups want a halt on new datacenters as power prices spike, and the industry is starting to look financially radioactive, with opaque financing schemes, hidden debt, and trillion-dollar infrastructure bets that could vaporize household wealth. Regulators are pushing back too: the EU is fining X, probing Google over training data, and floating a statutory licensing scheme for AI scraping, while Disney dives in with a billion-dollar bet on “responsible” AI storytelling that mostly translates to fewer humans on payroll.Meanwhile, everyday tech dystopia rolls on. Uber is monetizing your movement data, Instacart is quietly price-discriminating groceries, Waymo is spinning a robotaxi birth as a feel-good story, and crypto fraud finally earns real prison time. Add in AI-generated marketing slop, government sites hijacked by SEO porn, billion-dollar festival scams resurrected, and Congress kneecapping right-to-repair, and the takeaway is simple: the machines are hungry, the adults are absent, and the vibes are aggressively bad.Sponsors:CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today! They explore bottlenecks in compute, the surprising products that still do not exist, and how companies like Google, Meta, Apple, Amazon, and OpenAI are positioning themselves. Finally, they look ahead at what would need to happen for AI to one day be considered even more transformative than the internet.Timestamps: 0:00 – Introduction 0:17 – Defining AI and Platform Shifts1:50 – Patterns in Technology Adoption6:04 – AI: Hype, Bubbles, and Uncertainty13:25 – Winners, Losers, and Industry Impact19:00 – AI Adoption: Use Cases and Bottlenecks24:00 – Comparisons to Past Tech Waves32:00 – The Role of Products and Workflows40:00 – Consumer vs. Enterprise AI46:00 – Competitive Landscape: Tech Giants & Startups51:00 – Open Questions & The Future of AIResources:Follow Benedict on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/benedictevans/ Stay Updated:If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to like, subscribe, and share with your friends!Find a16z on X: https://x.com/a16zFind a16z on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/a16zListen to the a16z Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bC65RDvs3oxnLyqqvkUYXListen to the a16z Podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a16z-podcast/id842818711Follow our host: https://x.com/eriktorenbergPlease note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed. The Brian Walshe murder trial took a stunning turn Thursday morning when the defense rested without calling a single witness. Not Brian Walshe. Not their forensic experts. Not the medical professional who was supposed to explain how a healthy 39-year-old woman just drops dead in bed. Nothing. This comes just 24 hours after Walshe's attorneys told the judge he would take the stand. Instead, when asked directly by Judge Diane Freniere, Walshe confirmed: "I will not testify." After eight days of prosecution testimony and 50 witnesses, the defense offered zero counter-evidence to support the "sudden unexplained death" theory they promised in opening statements.  This morning, both sides deliver 45-minute closing arguments, then deliberations begin. The prosecution built their case on Brian Walshe's Google searches starting at 4:52 a.m. on January 1st, 2023 — searches for how to dispose of a body, how to dismember, hacksaw recommendations, and how to clean DNA from a knife. The jury saw surveillance footage of Walshe buying hatchets, hacksaws, Tyvek suits, and cleaning supplies while wearing a surgical mask and blue gloves, paying in cash. They heard that Ana's DNA was found on the hacksaw blade with statistical certainty in the nonillions. They learned about the $2.7 million life insurance policy naming Brian as sole beneficiary, and the affair with D.C. real estate broker William Fastow — whose name Brian searched on Christmas Day 2022. Brian Walshe has already pleaded guilty to dismembering Ana's body and misleading police. He faces life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder. We break down everything the jury heard, what the defense accomplished in cross-examination, and what to expect as this case goes to deliberation. #BrianWalshe #AnaWalshe #WalsheTrial #TrueCrime #MurderTrial #ClosingArguments #Massachusetts #CohassetMurder #TrueCrimeNews #JusticeForAna Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Over his nearly 30-year career, he has advised global clients on financing, licensing, and regulatory matters. David is also a frequent speaker on legal trends shaping the tech and entertainment industries.   Topics Covered in this Episode: Big AI lawsuits are here, with billion‑dollar payouts over using stolen content to train models. AI "answer boxes" are stealing clicks from websites, similar to how Google once hurt Yelp's traffic. Large AI companies are paying some publishers for data while still fighting older copyright complaints in court. There's real copyright danger when AI spits out content that is almost identical to the original, including images with old watermarks. Entertainment brands worry that letting AI change their main characters could weaken or confuse ownership of their IP. In schools, using AI too much can hurt students' ability to think deeply, read long texts, and solve problems on their own. Virtual worlds and the metaverse raise new questions about what "private property" and "privacy" mean online. If a chatbot encourages someone to do something dangerous or illegal, the company could face serious legal trouble. Letting AI write legal documents is risky because it can invent cases and laws that do not exist. One of the best current uses of AI in law is sorting and summarizing huge piles of documents for big cases.   Connect with David Hoppe: Website: Gamma Law Facebook: Gamma Law Twitter/X: GammaLaw Bsky: Gammalaw.bsky.social‬ LinkedIn: David B. OpenAI has released GPT 5.2, a new model that reportedly outperforms industry professionals across 44 occupations in benchmark tests, completing tasks over 11 times faster and at less than 1% of the cost of expert professionals. This development follows a declaration of urgency from CEO Sam Altman, who highlighted the need to enhance ChatGPT's capabilities in response to competition from Google's Gemini 3. The implications for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) are significant, as the model aims to improve productivity and efficiency in various professional settings, potentially reshaping workflows and service delivery. In a related move, the Walt Disney Company has entered a three-year licensing agreement with OpenAI, investing $1 billion to allow the integration of over 200 characters from its franchises into OpenAI's Sora video generation tool. This partnership is designed to enhance user engagement while respecting creator rights through licensing fees. Concurrently, Disney has filed a cease and desist letter against Google for alleged copyright infringement, claiming that Google has been distributing copyrighted content from its library without authorization. This dual approach of licensing and litigation illustrates the complexities of copyright in the AI era, particularly for smaller companies lacking the enforcement capabilities of larger entities. The episode also discusses the U.S. government's response to AI governance, including an executive order from President Trump aimed at preventing states from enacting regulations that could hinder the AI industry. This order reflects a broader tension within the Republican coalition regarding the potential risks of unregulated AI, such as job displacement. Additionally, a ruling by the Penn Guild against Politico highlights the importance of human oversight in AI applications within journalism, emphasizing that AI cannot replace the accountability inherent in human reporting. For MSPs and IT service leaders, the key takeaway is the necessity of treating AI not merely as a tool but as a process change that requires governance and risk management. As AI technologies become more integrated into workflows, the potential for legal exposure increases if they are deployed without adequate oversight. MSPs that focus on helping clients navigate these complexities and implement robust governance frameworks will be better positioned to provide value and mitigate risks associated with emerging technologies. Three things to know today 00:00 As OpenAI and Google Advance AI Models, Disney's Licensing and Lawsuits Highlight the Real Stakes06:58 Trump Pushes AI Deregulation While Unions and Agencies Enforce Accountability, Exposing a Growing Governance Gap10:29 AI, Quantum, and the Myth of Inevitable Adoption: What CIO Guidance and Microsoft's History Reveal About Real Tech Value This is the Business of Tech.     Supported by:  https://scalepad.com/dave/https://getflexpoint.com/msp-radio/

The Daily Boost | Coaching You Need. Success You Deserve.

You've heard it before: listen twice as much as you speak. Two ears, one mouth. Makes sense, right? But I'm taking that advice to a whole different level. Because most people are so busy listening to everyone else — to Google, to AI, to social media, to the noise — that they've stopped listening to themselves. They can't move forward without social approval. They don't trust their own wisdom. They've lost permission to listen to what their heart is saying. I introduce the concept of "going dark" — choosing to listen to others less and listen to yourself more. Not ignoring the world, but giving yourself space to think, to ponder, to ask "what would I do?" If you're feeling stuck or down, it's probably because you haven't stopped to listen to yourself. This episode changes that. Featured Story I've got the gift of gab. Always have. As a kid, I was energetic, enthusiastic, excitable. My mouth got me into lots of problems. Then I learned to use it to get myself out of those problems too. But somewhere along the way, smart people taught me to listen twice as much as I speak. When I got into coaching, I became a really good listener. Kept my mouth shut. Paid attention. Then I learned something else. I needed to listen to myself too. To my own wisdom. To what my heart was telling me. I started using what I call "Scott logic." Asking "what would Scott do?" Not in an arrogant way, but as an accumulation of all the wisdom I've gathered over the years. That's when everything changed. Important Points You have two ears and one mouth for a reason, but most people listen to everyone else so much they've stopped listening to themselves. Going dark means giving yourself space to listen to your own wisdom twice as much as you listen to others around you. When you stop listening to what your heart is telling you, that's usually when you start feeling stuck or down in life. Memorable Quotes "Going dark means life is brighter. It means good stuff is about to happen." "We've lost permission to listen to ourselves and to do for ourselves. It's like we can't move forward without social approval of those around us." "If I didn't absolutely know where I stood, I didn't know what my values were and what was really important to me, I had no business talking to anybody else." Scott's Three-Step Approach Shut your mouth and pay attention to the world. Listen to others, be caring, interact — but don't just talk to fill the space. Listen to yourself twice as much as anyone else. Take time to think, ponder, and ask yourself what you really believe about the situation. Know where you stand before speaking. Get clear on your values and what's important to you, then operate from that place. Chapter Notes 00:00 - Why your mouth might be your biggest problem 04:20 - The two ears, one mouth principle revealed 07:45 - What "going dark" really means for your life 11:15 - When social approval replaces self-trust 14:30 - Scott logic and knowing what you would do 17:20 - Why feeling down means you stopped listening 19:40 - Finding your values before talking to anyone Connect With Me Search for the Daily Boost on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify Email: support@motivationtomove.com Main Website: https://motivationtomove.com YouTube: https://youtube.com/dailyboostpodcast Instagram: @heyscottsmith Facebook Page: https://facebook.com/motivationtomove Facebook Group: https://dailyboostpodcast.com/facebook Learn more about your ad choices. How to Stop “Ensh*ttification” Before It Kills the Internet - ft. Cory Doctorow

    Capitalisn't

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 11, 2025 56:10

There's a word that's gained a lot of popularity in the last year: “ensh*ttification”. It refers to a trajectory many see with digital platforms: they initially offer immense value to users, only to systematically degrade that quality over time in order to extract maximum surplus for shareholders. We invited the coiner of this term, science fiction author and activist Cory Doctorow, on the podcast to discuss whether he thinks this decline is an inevitable feature of digital markets or a consequence of specific policy failures. And, most importantly, how he thinks it could be reversed. For Doctorow, "ensh*ttification" is not simply a result of "revealed preferences", where users tolerate worse service because they value the platform, but rather the outcome of a regulatory environment that has permitted the creation of high switching costs and the elimination of competitors. Doctorow also argues that historically, interoperability acted as an engine of dynamism, allowing new entrants to lower the barriers to entry. But current IP frameworks, such as anti-circumvention laws, have been "weaponized" to prevent this, effectively allowing firms to enforce cartels and engage in rent-seeking behavior. Finally, Doctorow offers a critical assessment of the current AI boom, arguing that the sector is creating "reverse centaurs", where human labor is conscripted to correct algorithmic errors, and warns of a potential asset bubble driven by inflated revenue attribution.
