Why Music Matters With Jeff Miers

Hello, music lovers!  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today's guests are siblings Maria, Grace and Jarrett Brzykcy, who together perform and record as The Water Dogs.  The Brzykcy siblings are multi-instrumentalists, whose early love of the Beatles and their daily life in a music-loving household grew into a desire to form a family band.  After the band formed in 2014, Maria emerged as the primary songwriter, and both Jarret and Grace happily found their own respective roles as arrangers and instrumentalists, crafting a sound that blends folk, pop, country and Americana into a refreshing hybrid.  The band recently released a new single, ‘Constellations,' which was recorded at Robby Takac's GCR Studios in Buffalo, under the watchful ears of legendary producer and engineer Fred Betschen.  During their visit to 678Main Studios in Buffalo, I spoke with the band about their roots, their current musical agenda, Jarret's budding side-job as a guitar designer and builder, Grace and Maria's love for video direction, and their plans for the future. The band also performed a few of their songs for us, live in the studio.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Maria, Grace and Jarrett Brzykcy - The Water Dogs.

More than 100 of the world's largest energy companies are betting that artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize how electricity gets made, moved, and managed. But they're not waiting for Silicon Valley to build it for them—they've taken matters into their own hands through an EPRI-led consortium. That initiative is the Open Power AI Consortium, which EPRI launched in March 2025 to drive the development and deployment of an open AI model tailored for the power sector. According to its mission statement, the Open Power AI Consortium “aims to evolve the electric sector by leveraging advanced AI technologies to innovate the way electricity is made, moved, and used by customers. By fostering collaboration among industry leaders, researchers, and technology providers, the consortium will drive the development and deployment of cutting-edge AI solutions tailored to enhance operational efficiencies, increase resiliency and reliability, deploy emerging and sustainable technologies, and reduce costs while improving the customer experience.” “We're really looking at building an ecosystem to accelerate the development and deployment, and recognizing that, while AI is advancing rapidly, the energy industry has its own unique needs, especially around reliability, safety, regulatory compliance, and so forth. So, the consortium provides a collaborative platform to develop and maintain domain-specific AI models—think a ChatGPT tailored to the energy industry—as well as sharing best practices, testing innovative solutions in a secure environment, and long term, we believe this will help modernize the grid, improve customer experiences, and support global safe, affordable, and reliable energy for everyone,” Jeremy Renshaw, executive director for AI and Quantum with EPRI, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. Among the consortium's members are some of the largest energy companies in the world, including Constellation, Con Edison, Duke Energy, EDF, Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), New York Power Authority (NYPA), Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E), Saudi Electricity Co., Southern Company, Southern California Edison, Taiwan Power Co., and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). It also includes entities like Amazon Web Servies (AWS), Burns and McDonnell, GE Vernova, Google, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Interconnection Authority, Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP), Khalifa University, Microsoft, Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), PJM, Rolls-Royce SMR, and Westinghouse Electric Co. “For many years, the power industry has been somewhat siloed, and there were not many touch points or communication between global utilities, technology companies, universities, and so forth. So, this consortium aims to facilitate making new connections between these important and impactful organizations to increase collaboration and information sharing that will benefit everyone,” Renshaw explained. EPRI, together with Articul8 and NVIDIA, has already developed the first set of domain-specific generative AI models for electric and power systems aimed at advancing the energy transformation. Although the technology has not been released publicly, it will be made available soon as an NVIDIA NIM microservice for early access. This development sets the foundation for more to come.

People have lived in the Madrid area since prehistoric times. Occupied by Romans, Moors, and then the Spanish, it has quite the history. Over 6.8 million people live in Madrid. That's less than Paris and London but more than Berlin. Of course, a capital city will boast a few ghost stories. The ghosts of those executed for heresy and witchcraft in the Plaza Mayor are said to still haunt the square. A fire tore through the square in 1631, devastating the buildings and leaving people dead, and some wondered if the square had attracted some kind of evil energy. That fact comes from NASA. And it's no wonder the Earth, and us, its inhabitants are influenced by it, because Earth exists INSIDE the Sun's atmosphere. You heard that right. Outside that heliosphere is interstellar space. NASA continues, "The Sun doesn't have a solid surface like Earth and the other rocky planets and moons. The part of the Sun commonly called its surface is the photosphere. The word photosphere means "light sphere" – which is apt because this is the layer that emits the most visible light. It's what we see from Earth with our eyes." Send us a textWe are in the dog days of summer.  It's a season of campouts, when a tent pitched in a backyard offers cool relief from sunny days. Those magical nights are a bridge to the celestial realm. From stories written in the stars to the placement of the Sun, Moon and planets at the moment of our birth, to the impact Moon phases and Sun spots have on our human bodies? The bridge to the celestial realm awaits. Let's step onto it.The Celestial BridgeWhen I think of the bridge to the celestial, I picture the crystal rainbow from the Thor movie that stretched from Asgard to other realms. The stars and our place among them has birthed questions we humans have pondered since ancient times. Tales have been woven from that vast blanket of light that speak of heroes, villains, cautionary tales, mythical beasts, revenge, and more. The placement of the moon, the sun, and constellations signaled the time to plant crops, hunt, store for winter, and hunker down. The sight of comets and meteor showers were often seen as omens, signs from the gods that seeded legends we repeat today. We still look to the stars, the sun and phases of the moon to better feel our connection to the Universe. Those celestial bodies inspire the mystery of us, in a way that feels secret, sacred and sometimes haunting. In fact, the cosmos inspired their own fiction genre known as Cosmic Horror. Heavily influenced by H.P. Lovecraft, Cosmic Horror focuses on the insignificance of humans, the unsettling nature of the Universe, and cosmic entities that can be threatening, or seem intimidating at the very least. What to Read/Listen/Watch NEXT!A Beginner's Guide to Reading a Birth Chart, ELLE Magazine, Madison FellerBeginner's Guide to Reading a VEDIC Birth Chart, Melooha.com, Dr. Vineeta PhatakPast Life in the Natal Chart, Astrologgia.com, Daria RoweFour Elements in Astrology, Moonletter.co.uk, Ben BelinskySun Facts, NASA.govSolar Flares: Effects on Humans, Heath.com, Amanda MacMillanInterpreting 5 Ancient Constellations Across Cultures, Discover Magazine, Joshua Rapp LearnOrion Across Three Cultures, NightSkyTourist.comI don't accept sponsors and paid advertisers. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Martin Cruz Smith: The Arkady Renko Novels Martin Cruz Smith (1942-2025, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky, recorded in the KPFA studio in 2004 and 2013. The great noir and detective author Martin Cruz Smith died of Parkinsons Disease on July 11, 2025 at the age of 82.  A journalist originally, and then a writer of paperback fiction under a variety of pseudonyms, he began writing under his own name and became known following the publication of a horror novel, Nightwing, in 1977. Though it wasn't until 1981 with the release of Gorky Park, a detective novel set in Soviet Russia and featuring investigator Arkady Renko, that he hit best-seller stardom. Over the next few years, he alternated non-series novels with entries in the Renko series, all to much acclaim. There are four Martin Cruz Smith interviews. The first two, both co-hosted with Richard A. Lupoff for Probabilities, were recorded in 1990 while on tour for Polar Star, the sequel to Gorky Park, and then again in 1996 for the award-winning stand-alone novel, Rose. These interviews have yet to be digitized. Today's program focuses on the two later interviews> Part One: This interview was recorded December 9, 2004 while on the book tour for the Arkady Renko novel, “Wolves Eat Dogs.” Part Two: This interview was recorded December 9, 2013 while on the book tour for the  Arkady Renko novel, “Tatiana.”   Martin Cruz Smith Wikipedia page   Book Interview/Events and Theatre Links Note: Shows may unexpectedly close early or be postponed due to actors' positive COVID tests. Behold another episode of Constellation! This week, Colin welcomes Lockmort, Brad, and Hoeg to the show for a rousing conversation about a trio of topics. For instance: What would life have been like if we were born somewhere else? What could have we achieved, or how far could we have fallen? Also: What are some genre 'disconnects' we've experienced? In other words, what kind of media have we consumed about a topic, or set in a time, or about something we'd otherwise have no interest in? In addition: Are fireworks still a fun diversion and way to celebrate? Or is it all feeling just a little bit old at this point? In this episode of Plugged In, Abhinav Krishna talks to Joe Hayden, Executive Vice President for North America at GridBeyond, to explore the evolving opportunities and challenges of energy flexibility in today's world. As the conversation dives into how commercial and industrial customers can unlock new revenue streams and support grid stability through demand response programs, Hayden shares why traditional approaches to demand response are being replaced by data-driven, AI-enhanced, and incremental strategies — especially in industries like data centers, cold storage, steel and manufacturing. From the challenges of backup power integration to opportunities in real-time flexibility, Hayden explains where we are in the transformation of the grid's generation and management of costly peak events, and breaks down how GridBeyond helps customers future-proof their energy strategies.
