If you're struggling with a hormone imbalance, resist the temptation to just throw more hormones into the mix to try and fix it. In this episode of Biohacking Superhuman Performance, I chat with Dr. Anna Cabeca - The Girlfriend Doctor, about how environmental toxins and stress can wreak havoc on your hormones, leading to issues like irregular periods and feeling unwell. If you struggle with abnormal menstrual cycles or feel bad all of the time, it can be turned around. You will likely need to work on detoxing from any environmental toxins. We often power through feeling crummy, but you will realize how bad you feel once you start feeling good. Birth control can be a toxin as it is a synthetic progestin and it suppresses ovarian hormone and natural cycling. (Progestin is the synthetic (human-made) form of progesterone). It takes more than hormones to fix your hormones. You need detoxification support, adrenal support, dietary support, and alkalization for mental health and mood. Oxytocin is the most powerful hormone in the body. It is the hormone of love, bonding, and connection. Healthy, happy, joyous activity increases oxytocin in the body (it's the opposite of cortisol!) Some people may benefit from supplementing oxytocin, but the first step is to always clean up the system.
In today's episode of The Root Cause Medicine Podcast, we explore the importance of oxytocin in maintaining healthy relationships, connection, and overall well-being with Dr. Anna Cabeca. You'll hear us discuss: 1. Why oxytocin is called the hormone of love and connection 2. The benefits of oxytocin supplementation 3. Forms and dosages for prescribed oxytocin 4. to boost oxytocin naturally With over 30 years of experience and 3 board certifications, Dr. Anna, aka The Girlfriend Doctor, expertly combines the latest in quantum science with her intuitive understanding to specialize in hormones and menopause, sexual health, and functional medicine. She has positively impacted the lives of over 10,000 women in her private practice, not to mention the millions she has reached through her books, online videos, and articles. It can feel frustrating when you're doing everything right, and you hit a plateau. Hot flashes, weight gain, and energy issues are massive symptoms. Menopause is natural. However, suffering is optional. In a quick window of time, we can feel improvements and feel empowered. [07:10] The Importance of Maintaining Healthy Ovarian Function We can restore and keep healthy ovarian function by looking at hormone disrupters and clearing them from our bodies. Plus, we should support the liver and detoxification. Healthy habits will allow us to have our menstrual cycles for longer - it's a longevity marker. One of the risk factors for diabetes and pre-diabetes is menopause. A higher risk factor is if you've had a hysterectomy. Thirdly, if you've had your ovaries removed, you have a significantly higher risk of diabetes. If you had your ovaries removed, even before 65, your risk of cardiovascular disease is almost double. The association with diabetes tells how important it is to maintain healthy ovarian function. [09:10] Why Women Need More Ketones Between The Ages of 35 and 55 During ages 35 - 55, the use of glucose in a women's brain significantly decreases. Instead, you shift to using ketones for fuel in the brain. Dr. Cabeca emphasizes the importance of greens. Depending on your symptoms, you have to pause greens, or you may have to pause meat. Sometimes we need to challenge our gut bacteria, and sometimes, we have to support digestive enzymes. It depends on your unique needs. [14:15] Why You May Want To Consider Using A Progesterone Cream Dr. Anna Cabeca is a massive fan of progesterone. There are progesterone receptors in our brain, bones, and breasts. Progesterone supports healthy breast tissue. Plus, progesterone will support healthy metabolism and healthy neuroendocrine function. Dr. Cabeca has used progesterone in men for anxiety and insomnia; it is a total game-changer. Oral progesterone is excellent if you are working on sleep. Check out Balance if you're looking for a progesterone cream: https://drannacabeca.com/products/pura-balance-ppr-cream. [22:40] Gratitude and Positive Thinking Can Make You Happier You have to pause negative thinking. Negative thoughts will predominate our lives if we allow them to. Try gratitude and praying. There is always something to be grateful for. Gratitude is so easy to do, making it easy not to do. People have 60,000 thoughts per day - most of them are negative. It's time to pause and think about gratitude. [28:45] Using Mighty Maca To Alkalize The Body and Balance Hormones Ideally, we're working on restoring our natural ovarian production or natural adrenal production. When Dr. Cabeca looks at fertility, she will look at a 21-day progesterone level. Mighty Maca is something Dr.Cabeca recommends for adrenal support. One of Dr. Cabeca's clients used Mighty Maca to fix her progesterone levels and finally get pregnant. Get Mighty Maca here: https://drannacabeca.com/products/mighty-maca [33:10] Unique Plans To Break Through Your Weight Loss Plateau If you hit a plateau, it's time to pause and try something new. There are five different six-day menu plans. The gut mucosa regenerates every 72 hours. So a six-day plan will give you two 72 hour cycles. Here are some of the menu plans: Pausing nightshades Plant-based menu Carnivore menu A cleanse with a gallbladder liver flush Adding healthy carbs AND MUCH MORE! [00:55] Why Dr. Anna Cabeca Wrote The Book MenuPause Dr. Cabeca wanted to write the book because women are getting stuck. I feel honored and privileged to re-interview Dr. Anna Cabeca today! She was with me once before in Episode 94. Dr. Anna is triple-board certified. She is also a fellow of gynecology and obstetrics, integrative medicine, and anti-aging and regenerative medicine. She has special certifications in functional medicine, sexual health, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Over the past 20 years, she has served more than 10,000 women in her private practice and millions more through her books, online videos, and articles. Dr. Anna has a new book out, called Menupause. When reviewing her book, I was surprised to discover that only 20% of those going into obstetrics and gynecology trained in menopause medicine. It almost seems that once women move beyond their child-bearing years, they become irrelevant and invisible. Fortunately, Dr. Anna is helping to change that narrative! In this episode, Dr. Anna and I dive into her new book. In addition, we talk about the need for female empowerment, the stigma of middle age, perimenopause, and menopause. We discuss intimacy as the key to connection and the importance of understanding the changes in a woman's body as she moves through that phase of life. (Dr. Anna refers to that as pausing.) We talk about understanding the role of the connection hormone oxytocin and the importance of women being solution-based when approaching that key phase of their lives. We get into statistics and the microbiome of the gut and the vagina, talk about Dr. Anna's various six-day eating plans, and explain how those changes can improve our physiology and stabilize symptoms. We also look into stubborn weight-gain issues, the health needs of middle-aged women, and how different cultures view middle age. I am thrilled to be bringing you today's exciting conversation! I hope you gain a lot from listening to it! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: There is time in menopause for women to re-evaluate their priorities. Dr. Anna challenges you, the listener, to start having girlfriend conversations. Talk to your best girlfriends about what's going on with you intimately. How to empower yourself by increasing the healing hormone oxytocin in your life. There are many different ways to support your body and improve your quality of life while going through menopause. Following a keto diet and fasting will give you energy, make you feel better, and improve your sex life. What inspired Dr. Anna to write her new book? How to improve your health, and live a long and high-quality life by cooking healthy food in healthy ways. How will you benefit from fasting for six days? Who will benefit from doing a pause and following Dr. Anna's Keto Green Plans? The predominant proteins that Dr. Anna focuses on in her plant-based plans. Changes Dr. Anna has seen in her patients' gut and vaginal microbiomes as they change their diets and transition from perimenopause into menopause. Some common causes of weight-loss resistance. Dr. Anna talks about some of the delicious hormone-balancing recipes in her book. Getting enough protein is vital- particularly as we get older. It is a 40-minute session during which you are administered a customized blend of vitamins intravenously, right into your bloodstream. Did you know that 1 of 3 people have a digestive compromise? IV Vitamin Therapy is the treatment that helps you absorb 100% of vitamins into your system. Benefits of IV Vitamin Therapy: - Boost your immune system - Heal from chronic disease - Fight off infections - Boost your mood - Improve sleep quality - Calm your nervous system - Health optimization - Prevention of disease - Anti-aging and collagen production boost Reach out to the Poppy Clinic! Wearing glasses may not be as uncool as they used to be, but they may actually be making your vision worse as you age. Dr. Anna and Claudia Muehlenweg discuss how to heal your eyesight naturally and why wearing eyeglasses creates bad habits that can lead to dry eyes, more stress, and worse vision over time. Learn some simple techniques that you can use right now to improve your eye health and start to reclaim your natural healthy vision. [2:20] Dr. Anna has been wearing eyeglasses since she was 13 years old. Recently, she started wearing bifocals and noticed how much they get in the way of reading a good book. Claudia is a leading expert on helping people restore their vision with natural methods. [5:20] Claudia has had vision problems since she was 3, which caused her a lot of social problems when she was a child. She was determined to get rid of her glasses and managed to do that during her 20's, but they made a comeback after her divorce. [7:20] Claudia has been practicing vision improvement her whole life and she's been teaching others how to do the same since 2009. The foundation of all natural eyesight improvement is the Bates method. [8:50] Vision improvement is based on relaxation. When you're relaxed, your system can operate optimally, but that's not true when you're stressed. In times of higher stress, your vision often gets worse. [10:20] The vision system takes until the age of 15 to develop fully. When a child is nearsighted, Claudia usually finds something in their life that stressed the child and made them feel unsafe. Not every person reacts to stress in the same way. For some, it can manifest as eczema or anxiety, but the body will usually show some kind of symptom. [14:00] The change in hormones during perimenopause can affect the shape and condition of the eyes, but that time of life can also be a time of major change that can be causing eye issues as well. [15:30] What is your vision for your life? How you view aging can impact your quality of life as you age. Be excited about your life and think about a vision for yourself in your healthiest and most energetic way. [16:35] Dry eyes can be solved with something as simple as blinking. When we look at screens, we tend to blink significantly less, and if you simply blink more, you will notice a considerable improvement. [17:50] You can also close and rest your eyes more often. Simply close and cover your eyes for 30 seconds, breathe deeply, and imagine it as a mini-vacation. [20:00] If you do feel eye strain, taking a minute to calm yourself can make a big difference. [21:30] Blue-blocking glasses are great for when you're in front of screens, but Claudia prefers software that changes the light output. It's preferable to get the blue light from the sun when you're supposed to get it. [23:50] Studies have shown that when we get up and spend five minutes each hour doing some sort of activity, it increases our productivity. That's a perfect time to incorporate resting your eyes. [24:45] Notice what makes your vision worse or better. If you need glasses to read, try reading at different times of the day or with more lighting. Moving your head and eyes together as you read and giving your attention to the words can help. It's also important to take frequent breaks and look around often. [28:00] Sunglasses were originally developed for extreme conditions but they eventually became more of a fashion statement. Wearing sunglasses can become an addiction just like smoking, and they interfere with the amount of natural light you need to function properly. [29:50] Our eyes need sunlight. The practice of sunning can help improve light sensitivity while exposing you to the sunlight you require. [33:20] Your eyes adapt and your brain can improve your blurry vision. Glasses do the work for you by allowing you to strain, avoid blinking, and have bad habits while still giving clarity. If you remove your glasses, your brain will adjust and you will be able to relax into more healthy eye habits. [35:40] The goal is to do things without glasses and allow your vision to readjust to a more natural way of seeing. The ideal is to not wear more correction than you need, and ideally, you wear whatever you need to do the task safely and be relaxed. [38:05] Just like diabetes, vision impairment can be reversed. The right therapies can improve your eye health and liberate you from glasses and contacts. [41:30] When you have your health, you have a thousand wishes. When you don't have your health, you have one wish. Most of us can't imagine our life without our vision. If You Want To Stop Stubborn Weight and Transition to Menopause Gracefully, You Should: Remember to embrace life's transitions and take a moment to pause and reflect Assess your relationship with food and alcohol by taking 6-day steps to see what works for your body Use natural remedies like food, essential oils, and menu pausing to get you where you want to be There is an insane amount of conflicting advice out there when it comes to staying healthy as we transition into menopause and throughout this new phase of our life. Many of us are confused about what is going on with our hormones, health, and overall wellbeing once we hit our 40s and beyond. While menopause is a natural transition that nobody gets to skip, suffering through it is totally optional. Food Is Medicine with Dr. Anna Cabeca Dr. Anna Cabeca is a triple board-certified physician and hormone expert. After being devastated by an early menopause diagnosis at age 38, she set out on a personal wellness journey that reversed her menopause side effects and resulted in the delivery of a healthy baby girl at the age of 41. She has changed the lives of thousands of women across the globe through her empowering transformation programs. Her new book, MenuPause, helps women get unstuck from weight plateaus and other menopause symptoms through the power of food as medicine. Enjoying the Beauty of Pausing There is a good chance you have probably been told to take a pause in a moment of anxiety or frustration. But what if you took a pause when it comes to the way you eat? Pausing how you eat, and evaluating how your food impacts you, is one of the best ways to reset your life and make the necessary changes to see powerful results when it comes to your health. Dr. Anna sees beauty in the pauses of our lives. Taking a moment to be inquisitive around what is serving you and what is not when it comes to your diet, and overall wellbeing can help you get to the bottom of what is sabotaging you. What is impactful on your body may not be impactful on someone else's, which is why it is up to you to become aware of how the things you are eating are taking you off course. 6 Days Is All It Takes In her new book, Dr. Anna has created five different menu plans that last for six days, which can help you pause, check in with yourself, assess how food impacts you, and learn what you need to do to move forward with your healing journey. These foundational protocols can help you age gracefully, improve metabolic flexibility, support your immune system, and help you leverage food as medicine through menopause and beyond. By getting into a state of ketosis in a healthy way for your unique phase of health and life, you can manage your inflammation, alleviate your stubborn weight plateaus, and harness the medicinal power of food. Cynthia Thurlow tells the story of how a serious health scare, complete with ruptured appendix and complications, put her on the path to functional nutrition and helping people heal through food and healthy lifestyle changes. Learn about how intermittent fasting plays into perimenopause and your menstrual cycle, when it's appropriate, and how to avoid the most common mistakes people make when fasting. [2:00] Cynthia worked as an ER nurse for 16 years before working in critical care and cardiology. Having a child with life threatening food allergies put her down the path of thinking of food as medicine with a functional nutrition program. Lifestyle medicine has become Cynthia's main focus now after waking up in 2016 and feeling like she couldn't write another prescription that doesn't treat the root cause of the issue. [4:20] Cynthia started attracting other women who felt like their needs weren't being heard. She did a lot of work around nutrition and group programs. In an effort to stretch herself, Cynthia challenged herself to do a Ted Talk about her perimenopause experience, and later on, a second one about intermittent fasting. [6:20] A ruptured appendix turned into a huge number of complications. Manifestation played a big part in Cynthia's recovery. [8:15] There is a huge amount of confusion around menopause and perimenopause. In 2015, Cynthia's life was far more stressful than she realized and it created the perfect storm for perimenopause. She was doing all the wrong things and woke up one day exhausted, gaining weight, and facing down new food sensitivities. [10:50] When Cynthia went to her OBGYN, she was offered synthetic hormones, an IUD, and even a hysterectomy. She had to reroute everything in her life to focus on healing including prioritizing sleep, reducing her training, changing her diet, and reducing her work load. [12:05] Most of us don't have to worry about stress management in our 20's and 30's, and perimenopause is a barometer to let us know if we're balancing the parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system. [13:05] We don't give prevention enough credit in maintaining health. [15:05] For both Cynthia and Dr. Anna, their experiences are what brought them to where they are now in life and they wouldn't be doing the meaningful work they do without them. [16:25] It's important to honor the rhythm of your menstrual cycle. The ideal time to fast is the time period right after menstruation and before ovulation. Additional stress during the five to seven days preceding the cycle can be particularly disruptive. [18:40] Progesterone is often prescribed during perimenopause, but it's important to take days off during the week. Prolonged progesterone supplementation increases insulin resistance. [22:45] Cynthia has had fantastic success treating type 2 diabetes and women who are insulin resistant with intermittent fasting but it has to be treated with caution. If you've suffered from anorexia, intermittent fasting may not be a safe option. Have a conversation with your doctor or psychologist to ensure you're at an appropriate stage in your recovery to begin fasting. [25:10] If you're not sleeping through the night, don't add intermittent fasting. Adding another stressor isn't going to help. Figure out why you aren't sleeping first and once that's been addressed intermittent fasting can be the missing piece of the puzzle for your health. [26:30] As we get older, we don't manage stress levels the same way we did when we were in our 20's. It's critically important that we take care of ourselves so that we can utilize a strategy like intermittent fasting to improve our health. You'll get the best results if you can moderate the lifestyle pieces first and then integrate it into your lifestyle. [28:05] Cynthia's book came out of her successful Ted Talk and it's essentially a blueprint for successful fasting, specifically for women. [29:25] There is a difference between clean and dirty fasting. Clean fasting is all about black coffee and bitter tea, and breaking your fast in the right way at the right time. Some of the common mistakes that people make is having BCAA or protein powder during a fast in the belief that the calories are low so it doesn't count. [31:30] When you're starting out, it's important to support your body's detoxing process. Replacing the electrolytes your body is losing during a fast is crucial to sticking with it. [34:15] Extended fasting can be beneficial, but it takes some effort to work up to. There are plenty of ways to look at fasting to make it sustainable and attainable. [35:20] A teaspoon of MCT oil is okay while fasting, but more than that can push you out of your fasting window. If you're just starting out and need a fatty coffee to get you through the early days of fasting, that's okay. Dr. Louann Brizendine talks about why menopause is not only a period of transition for women but also an opportunity for positive transformation and more happiness than you thought possible. Learn why the female brain becomes stronger and better in the midlife, how to adapt and thrive during that time of change, and why we need to incorporate more compassion, community, and connection in our lives as we age. [0:45] There is a physiology of mental health that is often ignored. There are changes to our brain that happen as we age and we need a comprehensive approach to healing. Biology and psychology have always both been fascinating for Dr. Anna, which is why she graduated with a double major in both fields. [4:30] To thrive you must honor your physiology. There is no mind/body dichotomy, they work together and rely on each other to make up you. [6:45] The Female Brain recently became a movie. It told the story of Dr. Brizendine, played by Whitney Cummings, and her book. [11:30] Being in psychiatry, Dr. Brizendine thinks of life in chunks. The Female Brain takes you to the beginning of the transition of your brain and the developmental stages from the ages between 40 and 90. [12:30] Declining progesterone and other hormones after the age of 30 affects our mood and thoughts through our physiology. Psychosis and mood changes can happen because of this transition. [13:50] Menopause is a rewiring of our brain that is as important as puberty. Hormones cause behavior. We think we are driving our own ship, but that's not entirely true. Right around the late 30s there are some shifts in our hormones which can cause all kinds of disruptions. [16:05] These hormone disruptions can cause all sorts of behavior changes where you feel calm and cool one moment and a raging inferno the next. It's important to honor and nurture yourself during those days of the cycle and realize that you can get a handle on it. [18:30] Even with women who have had their ovaries removed, they often experience a second stage of menopause. [20:20] If you've had a total hysterectomy, you technically don't need to take progesterone. A lot of women around the age of 50 in this situation start to feel fatigued and depressed, largely due to the adrenal glands. When we're younger, our ovaries produce 90% of the testosterone in our bodies, but that switches to our adrenal glands as we get older, and as we age, we don't produce as much of the hormones we need. [23:50] Men don't typically go through andropause until the age of 60. This can cause a mismatch between women who have a low sex drive and can be treated in ways that can help. [25:00] The Bush administration canceled the Women's Health division of the FDA that was looking into those effects. There is still a lot of sexism in the medical system. Doctors have the ability to prescribe medication for off-label use, and Dr. Anna often prescribes testosterone in this way. [26:45] When you give someone too much testosterone, it can create agitation and anger as well as novelty-seeking behavior. Physicians need to be careful when recommending or prescribing these hormone supplements. [28:30] Dr. Brizendine recalls the story of a patient who was prescribed testosterone and accidentally took 10 times the normal dose. [29:50] If the couple has a good sexual relationship, they can create a schedule and framework for sex and supplementation that makes it easier to experiment and adjust. A lack of sex drive is a long conversation. [35:10] Loneliness is more prevalent than ever. We don't generally live in a commune with our extended families anymore, and are more isolated. Oxytocin is a basic human hormone created from touch, the one thing that we have minimized for the past two years. [38:20] A lot of people have had a chance to get in touch with their spiritual life as an antidote to loneliness. First, you have to become aware that you're lonely, then you have to accept it. There are a number of symptoms that afflict people that you wouldn't necessarily associate with loneliness. [40:30] Once you're aware and have accepted, the action phase starts. Research has shown that women generally need at least four human contacts per week. Humans need contact. Without it we feel like we're dying and it can lead to all kinds of negative health problems. [43:20] The 50s and 60s are wonderful decades. Research shows that we generally get happier as we age as we let go of the nonsense expectations we have and do things that are more meaningful to us. There is a lot to look forward to as you get older including more compassion, community, and connection. [47:50] Dr. Anna asks a series of rapid fire questions about Dr. Brizendine's favorite foods, supplements, and exercises. Dr. Anthony Youn is a plastic surgeon, bestselling author, and transformation expert who has become a social media sensation building an audience of millions of followers across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. He joins the show to discuss how to take care of your skin and what you can do to turn back the clock. [7:20] Dr. Youn re-invented himself during the pandemic as he found himself having to close his office and not having patients to take care of. He started creating entertaining and educational videos on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. [8:21] Dr. Youn likes the fact that he can treat 20 people in his office in a day, but that he can also help 500,000 people on social media. [11:03] When it comes to the fight against aging, Dr. Youn recommends eating real food, using clean skincare, and looking at actual plastic surgery only as a last resort. As far as best diets for the skin, there isn't a particular one Dr. Youn recommends following – it's about consuming what's best for your body in general. [11:31] There are a few things Dr. Youn suggests everyone does to take good care of their skin and to help turn back the clock: using Retinol or a good anti-aging cream at night, using an anti-austerity serum every morning, and using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30. [13:32] Dr. Youn and his team conducted a test that consisted of them applying simple skin care cream two minutes in the morning and two minutes at night for two months. They found that the participants of this experiment looked about five years younger. [13:54] Here's what you could do in the morning to be ahead compared to 90% of people: cleanse your skin in the morning, apply an antioxidant serum – like a vitamin C serum after that, and apply sunscreen last. A toner or a moisturizer aren't necessarily needed. [14:16] At night, it's important to cleanse your skin to get rid of the day's worth of grime, oil, makeup, and pollution. After that, you want to apply Retinol or another anti-aging cream. [14:47] Remember: moisturizers aren't truly anti-aging, they're just for comforting and hydrating your skin. [15:50] When it comes to seeking and undergoing plastic surgery, it's important to keep in mind that you have options. If you're looking at little downtime and not as much cost, for instance, there's IPL (Intense-Pulse Light). It's a great way to get rid of spots caused by the sun. Looking for an overall anti-aging treatment? Then, Microneedling is worth looking into. As Dr. Youn puts it ‘You don't have to undergo surgery with an expensive laser with a 10-14 day downtime to look and feel younger – you have so many options these days.' [18:09] When it comes to the online and medical spaces, there are a couple of things that have left Dr. Youn appalled. The first one concerns people who perform surgical procedures in hotel rooms or other locations, and they do so even if they aren't doctors. Thankfully, these fake doctors, who have also caused some people to die, are being arrested and put in prison. The second phenomenon discussed by Dr. Youn are some doctors who have the tendency to add surgery after surgery, and have operations lasting eight, ten or even more hours. This is a situation that is starting to become dangerous. [19:40] In his approach, Dr. Youn has limited any operation to about five hours because, as he says, safety has to be the top priority. [20:31] There are different categories of anti-aging ingredients that are most commonly used when it comes to skin care. There are retinoids – derivatives of vitamin A – for example, and there are growth-factor based creams or peptides. [22:55] One thing that's important for you to remember is to try to identify and avoid triggers. For some people this could be heat, for others alcohol, or coffee. Everybody is different. [23:59] People can get overgrowth of bad bacteria on your skin, just like they would get it in their gut. [27:19] As far as antibiotics are concerned, Dr. Youn acknowledges that there's a challenge plastic surgeons face when it comes to their risk-benefit ratio of their operations. In some cases, antibiotics are overprescribed. But it's important to be aware of the fact that antibiotics aren't found only in the medical space. Research in the food service industry, for instance, has found that there can be antibiotics as high as 70% in food given to animals. [29:45] Some facts about Dr. Youn: fat injections, fat and back grafting are among his favorite surgical procedures. He enjoys smoothie bowls, a glass of wine here and there, and a beer once every few months. He plays tennis and is a huge fan of yoga. In his downtime, he enjoys doing creative work like writing and brainstorming video ideas. As for sex, he considers himself a traditionalist, picking missionary as his favorite sexual position.
