Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded once again, with John & Randall trading places this week — but we've still got plenty of gaming goodies to dig into, so let's get right into it... Kevin gets things started off with a spotlight on a couple of Steam demos that he really enjoyed recently — including another fantastic puzzler from the lovely folks at Afterburn, along with a wonderful pixel art dungeon crawler from solo developer, Vandermaesen Games. (Check out Kevin's interview with the developer from many moons ago, right here!) John takes the reigns from there, and closes us out with some of his thoughts on the Octopath Traveler series — along with some other Square Enix goodies — after spending some quality time with Octopath Traveler II.

Show Notes 0:00: Justin and Helen once again skip over what they’ve been up to and discuss some of the latest news that’s occurred in the past few weeks, starting with the distressing situation involving Syundei and the harassment that’s come about since the Go for It, Nakamura-kun! anime has aired. News 8:40: What happens when you have one Twitter user ask the creator of Gachiakuta if it’s okay to read the series for free in an Discord channel? Well, you have this news be weird (especially due to some of the tweets Kei Urana has put out there) and also important news since we get into discussing everyone’s favorite topic: piracy!!! (Justin also once again puts forth a challenge to the weird news universe, which only has Helen shaking her head in disbelief) 16:47: It’s been a while since the two hosts have discussed payment processor issues, but FAKKU is exploring a number of options — even crypto — as the struggles for adult manga being published is real; Hiroshi Date will resign as Tokyo MX Representative Director and Chairman at the end of April following an investigation of power harassment towards his subordinates. 22:51: Gangsta. will return! Kohske has announced, after a very lengthy (and still ongoing) battle with systemic lupus erythematosus, the manga will return in July; The Reincarnated as the 7th Prince manga is now back after it went on a hiatus to let the artist recuperate and prepare for the next arc; and in the 9th issue of Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine, the 86th and latest chapter of Daruma Matsuura’s Steel of the Celestial Shadows was published, which signaled its return following its hiatus since February last year. 27:04: Masaoki Shindō’s RuriDragon was slated to return in April, but the newest chapter is now slated to be released in June; Due to Daisuke Ashihara’s poor health, World Trigger will go on a 1-issue break; Tetsuya Tashiro’s Slasher Maidens is now going on an irregular serialization schedule until further notice. 29:40: And the two hosts send their condolences to the friends and family of Tanma-kun creator Sadao Shoji, who passed away April 5 at a hospital in Tokyo due to heart failure. Licenses 31:32: Yen Press had some announcements for many people: Usa Haneda & U35’s Buying a Classmate Once a Week (Yen On) kurumuakumu & nc&gm’s N Tomoyo Kondoh’s Two A.M. at the Dining Table Shouji Gatou & Ohige Kamisori’s Full Metal Panic! Family Kazuhito Minagi & PenekoR’s Your Castle’s Little Helper (Yen On) Nekomugi’s Tokujo-chan: The Girls Who Brighten Your Day Kazuki Ichimori & Erika Kanbara’s Defying Expectations with Gravity Magic to Be Unparalleled Maki Komatsu’s The Record of Fantastical Nomenclature Keiichi Hikami & lack’s See You at That Site of Grace After Work (Yen On) 34:11: Seven Seas and their Wonderful Wednesdays brings forth more announcements: Into the Night – YOASOBI Stories Collection (Airship) Sworn Brothers on the Farm The Apothecary Is Gonna Make This Ragged Elf Happy Kidnapped by Elves, I Went from Potion Factory Alchemist to Accidental Hero I Became a Necromancer After Beating Up My Angel Guide and Accidentally Triggered the Apocalypse (LN and Manga) In Another World with My Cat: A Software Engineer Uses Code to Master Magic (Airship, digital) The Erotical Wizard and His Twelve Brides (Ghost Ship) Hate Me, but Let Me Stay – Mr. Asanaga and Mr. Yanagi Amamiya-san is the Cutest…and I’m a Close Second! The Berserker NPC Unknowingly Destroys the World (Airship, Digital) 35:42: Glacier Bay Books had a couple new releases to announce (from Hyou Hyou short story collection to Codomopaper’s Juji and Aichi) and provided an update on taking over Star Fruit Books’ inventory and them focusing on fulfilling existing SFB orders (and a lot more); Kodama will bring over more Baki and another new title (The Magical Forest of Hoshigahara) this year; Kana meanwhile will bring over Satoshi Morie's My Dear, A Mystery For You next year. 40:00: Two new titles have been added to Kodansha’s K Manga service, while a couple of manga will now also be available on Square Enix’s Manga UP!. Streaming News 40:21: Crunchyroll will stream Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc this week! Yet Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle apparently won’t be added just yet…!; Netflix will finally add Akane-banashi to the service in May, both sub and dub; Bandai Namco Pictures is now streaming Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly on YouTube, which only makes the two hosts wonder if any services was interested in picking this up in the first place. 43:05: The K-ON! film will be on the Criterion Channel in May. Yes, you can re-read that as many times as you want. It is happening. And let’s just say the quotes on the announcement were hilarious. Main Topic: Spring 2026 First Impressions 44:36: A packed spring season means lots to discuss! Hear Justin just lament some of the shows he’s not gonna watch due to how busy the season is (1:26:40: Drops of God, Botan Kamiina, Agents of the Four Seasons to name a few). Hear Justin go over some of his few favorites (Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Re:Zero S4, The Ramparts of Ice, Witch Hat Atelier to name a few). And then naturally hear Justin elaborate on what he likes and dislikes from the newest season of Ascendance of a Bookworm (1:17:57). Wait, what about Helen’s thoughts? WELL, about that…(49:30). Weird News 1:31:33: Manga has evolved in many ways, but I’m not sure Logan Paul buying graded copies of One Piece and Dragonball’s first Jump appearances was a sentence the two hosts would ever utter. But it has happened, because man people are stupid. 1:33:16: An error occurred with the Reincarnated as a Slime manga, where it was listed as over at Volume 32, but was corrected by Dengeki Online. Justin was about to say! 1:34:27: And out of many possible McDonald’s combinations, Masako Nozawa and Baki being involved in this is not a combo you’d expect! In the world of PlayStation, this past week was one of mystery. For instance, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy seems to be rather blatantly teasing a new Uncharted game on Instagram. But is he actually? Meanwhile, the promise of PlayStation on PC seems to have gone totally up in smoke, with the quiet removal of related iconography from the PSN. Could it be a sign of things to come? Plus, Sony's aggressive new position on the PlayStation Store continues to bear fruit, as even more games are deleted and unpublished that never belonged there to begin with. Are we finally getting the storefront we deserve? Other news this week includes intrigue surrounding an interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, changes incoming for PS5's UI, potential teases for remakes or remasters of Persona 1 and 2, the wet fart that was the Tales series' 30th anniversary, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do you have to play the original Resident Evil trilogy on PSone to be a "real" fan, or do the remakes suffice? Why is Square Enix so hesitant to do anything with Chrono Trigger? With Capcom's Pragmata right around the corner, what are our last-minute thoughts?

Interesse? Deze case is hier voor 158 euro verkrijgbaar.
Final Fantasy XV didn't just have a troubled development; it was built on a foundation that would never work. Square Enix created Crystal Tools for Final Fantasy XIII, a highly linear game… and then tried to use that same technology to build an open-world project in Versus XIII. What followed was nearly a decade of delays, engine rewrites, and constant restructuring, until the original vision collapsed into something else entirely. In this episode, we break down how management decisions, engine limitations, and shifting priorities turned one of the most anticipated Final Fantasy games into one of its most infamous development cycles. The drama around DLSS 5 has overtaken the gaming industry during the last week. Nvidia's image upscaling tech has been present in our space for years, but its newest iteration (set for a proper fall release) has many people scratching their heads. Have we gone from frame generation to art reinterpretation? Why is this technology being deployed so aggressively, anyway? And how come so many companies were so excited about it until they saw the overwhelmingly negative audience response? Let's delve headfirst into the mystery of the Yassified Grace, and all of the fallout therein. Plus: A fresh rumor indicates PlayStation Network branding will disappear later this year, Sony has apparently automatically refunded people for any spending in the now-cancelled Highguard, PSVR2 second party FPS Firewall Ultra has silently been delisted, PlayStation 3 received its random annual firmware update, legendary Tom Clancy developer Red Storm has been gutted, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Have any of us messed around with a PS3 emulator? What's going on with Street Fighter 6's creepy new storyline? With Bravely Default skipping PS4 and PS5, is it safe to assume Square Enix isn't actually done with exclusives? Did two Sacred Symbols fans miss each other by mere seconds in a Dollar Tree parking lot? Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIn the latest segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz breaks down Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) transferring its nearly $3 billion stake in Take-Two Interactive to Savvy Games Group. This internal move, confirmed via regulatory filing on February 17, 2026, shifts approximately 11 million shares—previously making PIF Take-Two's second-largest shareholder—without any sale or exit from the company. This consolidation aligns with PIF's broader strategy, including a January 2026 announcement to transfer around $12 billion in gaming-related shares to Savvy, encompassing stakes in Nintendo, Bandai Namco, and expected positions in Koei Tecmo, NCSoft, Nexon, and Square Enix. Savvy Games Group emerges as the Kingdom's central vehicle for global gaming investments. The timing is notable ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI's 2026 release, with Take-Two's portfolio featuring GTA, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, Borderlands, and Zynga's mobile titles driving market focus.Analytic Dreamz also covers PIF's separate $55 billion agreement (with partners) to acquire Electronic Arts, expected to close later in 2026, further deepening Saudi exposure to AAA publishing, U.S. gaming, and international publishers. This restructuring centralizes holdings under Savvy, maintaining strong Saudi capital ties to major franchises and the industry's biggest upcoming launch. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KJoin Analytic Dreamz on the latest segment of Notorious Mass Effect for an in-depth analytical breakdown of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined — the groundbreaking 2026 ground-up remake of the classic JRPG originally released as Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (known in Japan as Warriors of Eden). This turn-based masterpiece, directed by Yuji Horii with iconic Akira Toriyama character designs and music by Koichi Sugiyama, returns transformed. Featuring stunning diorama-like handcrafted 3D environments and a doll-inspired aesthetic, the remake streamlines narrative pacing while overhauling combat and adding essential quality-of-life features like auto-battle, speed toggles, and field insta-kills for weak enemies.Dive into the core gameplay: collect stone tablet fragments to restore lost islands through time travel, exploring present and past versions with integrated puzzle-solving and town-building mechanics where you recruit NPCs to upgrade your hometown. The vocation system evolves with moonlighting (dual vocations) and "Let Loose" burst abilities, plus monster hearts for passive buffs and recruitment for a monster park (no direct party use). No multiplayer exists, but optional post-game superbosses await.Analytic Dreamz compares playtime metrics — main story now 40–50 hours (down from 100+ on PS1 and 75–80 on 3DS) — and covers the expanded content scope: 4–5 core party members (Hero/Auster, Kiefer, Maribel, Mervyn, Aishe), 20+ vocations from basics to advanced tiers, hundreds of monsters, 20+ major islands across dual timelines, side quests, casinos, and mini-games.The 2026 multiplatform launch (Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC) drove strong performance: ~457K physical units in Japan week 1 (Switch 178K, Switch 2 160K, PS5 119K), Steam peak at 27K concurrency, and a #4 UK debut — second-best franchise launch. Critics praise the visual overhaul, QoL improvements, and pacing (81–83 Metacritic, e.g., Nintendo Life 9/10), though some legacy fans debate story trimming and removed elements.Analytic Dreamz explores development by HexaDrive with Square Enix polishing, historical context from PS1 (4.1M worldwide) and 3DS versions, plus strategic takeaways: modernization prioritizes accessibility over maximal retention, broadening appeal beyond Japan's core market while dividing purists.Tune in for this comprehensive analysis of how Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined redefines a timeless epic for modern players.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
