Marina found a note giving her directions if he failed to return. Though she realized he was deeply disturbed, she kept the event secret until the Warren Commission. Shortly after, Oswald moved to New Orleans, seeking to build credentials as a "radical operative" for Fidel Castro, hoping to secure a Cuban visa that would lead to a Soviet visa. Paul Gregory notes that despite his growing delusions, there was absolutely no indication whatsoever that he was planning to assassinate the president of the United States at this time. #249: Florida blueberry farmer Hugh Kent of King Grove Organic Farm shares the story of how corporate power and USDA negligence nearly drove his organic farm out of business - and how he saved it through direct marketing. Speaking at the Saving Real Organic conference at Churchtown Dairy, Hugh connects the dots between monopoly economics, antitrust failures, hydroponic loopholes, and the collapse of fair markets for soil-grown fruit. His talk exposes how imported, plastic-based “organic” blueberries from Mexico and Peru have replaced real soil-based farms in America - and what it will take to rebuild a fair, honest marketplace for both farmers and eaters.https://realorganicproject.org/hugh-kent-saving-real-organic-direct-marketing-248The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

In this episode we range from Odesa to Caracas, from Kyiv to Washington, and investigate the startling withdrawal of some intelligence support by the British for the US, once considered an staunch ally, fearing they'd become implicated in illegal and arbitrary acts of murder in the Caribbean as Trump's war against so-called traffickers and gangs ramps up in international waters. Today's episode is about three converging storms:1. The UK has quietly paused some intelligence sharing with the United States over lethal “drug boat” strikes near Venezuela.2. Moscow is talking about parking its new Oreshnik hypersonic missiles in Venezuela – “Americans may be in for surprises,” as one Russian lawmaker put it.3. In this episode, Gene emphasizes the necessity for clarity in the roles of boards and CEOs, illustrating how effective governance can mitigate dysfunction and enhance organizational health. The conversation further explores the importance of courageous communication and the cultivation of trust within leadership dynamics. Ultimately, this dialogue serves as a poignant reminder of the need for humility and service in leadership roles, prompting listeners to reflect on their own practices and commitments to fostering unity and understanding. Back Channel with Foth features a profound discussion on the expanding divide within political parties, as articulated by our esteemed guest, Dick Foth. He posits that this division is not merely apparent but is indeed a growing reality, characterized by an increasing extremism that stifles constructive dialogue and fosters polarization.Takeaways: The growing distance between political parties in the United States is increasingly evident, reflecting a broader societal divide. Communication within organizations is significantly influenced by tone, often more than the words themselves, making effective dialogue crucial. The role of a board in leadership is pivotal, providing clarity and direction to ensure the success of the CEO and the organization. Leadership requires intentionality in balancing work and personal life to prevent burnout and maintain effectiveness in one's role. A healthy board must engage in courageous conversations and provide accountability to ensure effective governance and leadership. Leaders should recognize that their identity should not be rooted in their roles but in their service to others, fostering humility and community.

This week I'm shattering preconceived notions that Indigenous Americans north of Mexico didn't build cities. That they organized, instead, into only small, nomadic villages. Because, for around 800 years there was a great city, the largest pre-Colombian city north of Mexico, a city that, if you were to have visited in the year 1200, is theorized to have been larger than both London and Paris at that same time. In fact, it held the record for largest city in the now United States for almost 700 years from around 1100 until Philadelphia broke the record in the 1780s. I'm talking about the city of Cahokia which sprawled along the Mississippi River in southern Illinois, a testament to the true scale, potential, and abilities of Indigenous Americans in what is now the United States. Never heard of it? I hadn't either. If the 20th Century was the American Century, it was also UPS's Century. Joe Allen's The Package King: A Rank and File History of UPS (‎Haymarket Books, 2020), tears down the Brown Wall surrounding one of America's most admired companies—the United Parcel Service (UPS). The company that we see everyday but know so little about. How did a company that began as a bicycle messenger service in Seattle, Washington become a global behemoth? How did it displace General Motors, the very symbol of American capitalism, to become the largest, private sector, unionized employer in the United States? And, at what cost to its workers and surrounding communities? Will it remain the Package King in the 21st Century or will be dethroned by Amazon? Joe Allen worked for nearly a decade at UPS between its Watertown, Massachusetts and Chicago, Illinois Jefferson Street hubs. Allen's work life has largely involved different sections of freight and logistics including for such major employers as A.P.A Transport (Canton, Mass.), Yellow Freight (Maspeth, NY), and UPS. He has been a member of several Teamster local unions and a member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Last month, during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States had offered to functionally loan Argentina $20 billion. Despite the sums involved, this bailout required no authorization from Congress, because of the loan's source: an obscure pool of money called the Exchange Stabilization Fund. The ESF is essentially the Treasury Department's private slush fund. Its history goes all the way back to the Great Depression. But, in the 90 years since its creation, it has only been used one time at this scale to bailout an emerging economy: Mexico, in 1995. That case study contains some helpful lessons that can be used to make sense of Bessent's recent move. Will this new credit line to Argentina work out as well as it did the last time we tried it? Or will Argentina's economic troubles hamstring the Exchange Stabilization Fund forever?Pre-order the Planet Money book and get a free gift. /  Subscribe to Planet Money+Listen free: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Our weekly Newsletter. This episode was hosted by Keith Romer and Erika Beras. President Trump's recent call for an investigation into the Jeffrey Epstein scandal — even though driven by his desire to target political enemies — has unexpectedly opened the door to the one thing victims, journalists, and the public have demanded for decades: a full, unfiltered, scorched-earth investigation into the entire Epstein network. Regardless of Trump's motives, the demand for a comprehensive inquiry is long overdue. The evidence already available is more than sufficient to launch a massive multi-pronged federal RICO case involving human trafficking, financial crimes, money laundering, international transport of minors, conspiracy, bribery, foreign intelligence ties, prosecutorial misconduct, and systemic institutional corruption. If accountability is real, then every person connected — billionaires, politicians, bankers, intelligence agents, celebrities, academics, royals, lawyers, prosecutors, and yes, Donald Trump himself — must be investigated without exception or favoritism. Justice cannot be selective. No more theatrics, no more distraction campaigns, no more redaction games. The only viable pathway forward is the appointment of an independent special investigator with absolute authority — someone outside the political system, immune to pressure, blackmail, influence, or partisan interference. The investigation must include full subpoena power, unrestricted access to financial records, sealed depositions, recovered digital evidence, and sworn testimony from every powerful figure who once believed they were untouchable. Anything less is cosmetic theater. This is no longer about Republican vs. Democrat, or about protecting reputations — it is about whether the United States still possesses the moral backbone and institutional will to pursue truth when it threatens the elite class. If Trump truly has nothing to hide, he should welcome the spotlight. If others do, they should tremble. The time for excuses has expired. Appoint the investigator. Open the vault. And let the truth burn.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

This week's episode is a live recording of Wisdom of Crowds, where we celebrated a very special occasion: the publication of Shadi Hamid's new book, The Case for American Power. The book is a soul-searching study about American power as a force for good in the world, and it combines memoir and foreign policy analysis. Shadi's thesis is that if we want to make the world “more just and more moral, more democratic and more respectful of human rights,” then backing the United States is both the “last best hope and the least-bad option.”Joining Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic is special guest Matt Duss, former foreign policy advisor to Bernie Sanders, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, and co-host of the Undiplomatic Podcast. “I am certainly not against the idea of American power,” says Matt. But his question is: “Which America?” Duss is less optimistic that US power can be put to good use because, he says, we are currently having a national debate about “what is the nature of the American project.” It's unclear how that debate will end.Nevertheless, Shadi argues, American democracy, however imperfect, is still superior to the regimes in the other global hegemons, Russia and China. We should not fear our own home — oikophobia is a real issue, Shadi says, using the term for “fear of one's home,” the opposite of xenophobia. Duss partially agrees, but says that being a democracy does not necessarily imbue American foreign policy with moral authority. “International law does that.” The topic of international law prompts Damir to steer the conversation towards the topic of Gaza. Does American collaboration with Israeli war crimes disprove Shadi's thesis? Or does it paradoxically strengthen the argument that the world needs morally-guided American power? At this point, Shadi utters one of the best lines of the night: “To be seen as hypocritical is the cost of trying to being better than you actually are.”We are making this episode completely free for all subscribers, including the Q and A section, which covers topics like: hypocrisy in foreign policy; why working with China is preferable to the US for some nations; how Gaza will change the Democratic Party; the crisis in the MAGA coalition; and more! From the 1720s to the 1940s, parents in the kingdom and later colony of Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin) developed and sustained the common practice of girl fostering, or "entrusting." Transferring their daughters at a young age into foster homes, Dahomeans created complex relationships of mutual obligation, kinship, and caregiving that also exploited girls' labor for the economic benefit of the women who acted as their social mothers. Drawing upon oral tradition, historic images, and collective memories, Jessica Reuther pieces together the fragmentary glimpses of girls' lives contained in colonial archives within the framework of traditional understandings about entrustment. Placing these girls and their social mothers at the center of history brings to light their core contributions to local and global political economies, even as the Dahomean monarchy, global trade, and colonial courts reshaped girlhood norms and fostering practices. In The Bonds of Kinship in Dahomey: Portraits of West African Girlhood, 1720–1940 (Indiana UP, 2025) Reuther reveals that the social, economic, and political changes wrought by the expansion of Dahomey in the eighteenth century, the shift to "legitimate" trade in agricultural products in the nineteenth century, and the imposition of French colonialism in the twentieth all fundamentally altered—and were altered by—the intimate practice of entrusting female children between households. Dahomeans also valorized this process as a crucial component of being "well-raised"—a sentiment that continues into the present, despite widespread Beninese opposition to modern-day forms of child labor. Dr. Jessica Reuther is an associate professor of African and world history at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, USA. Brad Edwards Talks About Courtney Wild And Her Long Battle Against Epstein

Brad Edwards, the attorney who represented many of Jeffrey Epstein's victims, has often spoken of Courtney Wild as one of the most courageous survivors he's ever known. He called her “an extraordinary person” who refused to be silenced, even when the entire system seemed designed to bury her voice. Wild was one of Epstein's earliest known victims, first identified by law enforcement back in 2005 when she was just a teenager living in Palm Beach. Despite that, she was never informed or consulted about the secret non-prosecution agreement that federal prosecutors granted Epstein in 2008—a deal that not only spared him federal charges but also protected his co-conspirators. Edwards said that what happened to Wild wasn't just an oversight—it was a deliberate betrayal, an intentional violation of the Crime Victims' Rights Act that stripped her of the justice she was entitled to.He has repeatedly described Wild's determination as the backbone of the fight to expose the full scope of Epstein's corruption. It was her lawsuit—Wild v. United States—that forced the government to admit that victims had been deliberately kept in the dark while Epstein and his legal team struck their secret deal behind closed doors. Edwards praised her for standing up not just for herself but for every survivor who was silenced or dismissed. He noted that Wild endured years of retraumatization by the system, yet never gave up on seeking justice, even taking her case all the way to the Supreme Court. For Edwards, Wild became the moral center of the entire Epstein saga—a symbol of resilience in the face of institutional cowardice and proof that the voices of survivors, once ignored, could ultimately force the truth into the light.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
