We've all heard the promises of The Secret. If you think positive thoughts and raise your frequency, you can have, be, and do anything you want. But what happens when your nervous system is stuck in trauma and doesn't feel safe enough to receive? That's when manifestation stops working and survival mode takes over. In this episode of Food Heals, Allison Melody chats with Empowerment Strategist JJ Flizanes to explore the 4 survival states, how they block our manifestation, and how to move from trauma to transformation. Fight is when your body gears up to defend at all costs. Think Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games or Will Smith at the Oscars yelling, “Keep my wife's name out of your f--king mouth.” Flight is when your system tells you to run or avoid the situation entirely. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy bolting from monsters. Forrest Gump's iconic “Run, Forrest, run.” Meredith Marks disengaging. Freeze is when you shut down, dissociate, or feel paralyzed. Think Ophelia in Hamlet, frozen and silenced by grief. Harry Potter stunned into stillness when Voldemort reappears. Fawn is when you abandon your own needs in order to appease or please others. Kyle Richards feeling guilty when Kathy has to apologize to her, Sansa Stark pledging her loyalty to King Joffrey in Game of Thrones just to survive. In today's episode, you will learn: Why traditional Law of Attraction teachings stop at the mind and miss the body How trauma and unprocessed emotions can keep you stuck in survival states Tools to shift from survival into safety so you can finally align with your desires The exact steps JJ takes herself when she feels triggered and needs to reset Listen now to discover how to move from survival mode into flow so you can finally create the life you have been vision-boarding. In Jezebel, Bette Davis plays a sassy Southern belle who pushes prudish fiancé Henry Fonda away. And it's all over a red dress. Jezebel is a movie about manners, propriety and stubbornness in the Antebellum South (courteous though they are, they DO have plenty of slaves) with the looming threat of Yellow Fever. William Wyler's romance in and around New Orleans isn't an all-time classic, but Bette and Fay Bainter both won Oscars for their good, if not quite fantastic work. So coyly pull the back of your extra-long dress up with a riding crop and then spend a year or two being a semi-villain before you make a hard about-face into the land of self-sacrifice. Today, we sit down with comedy legend Bruce Vilanch for a wide-ranging career retrospective, tracing his path from early days as a writer for the Chicago Tribune and Hollywood Squares to becoming one of the most in-demand joke writers in show business. Vilanch reflects on decades of crafting sharp one-liners for the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys, his work with icons like Bette Midler and Whoopi Goldberg, and his own turn in the spotlight as both a performer and pop culture fixture. With his trademark wit and candor, he offers behind-the-scenes stories, reflections on how comedy has evolved, and insights into what it takes to keep audiences laughing across generations. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 119 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the latest film from director Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another (2025). On the podcast, Ryan and Jay love nothing more than sitting back and seeing a passion project from a major director be given the greenlight to be shown to the masses, and such is the case for One Battle After Another, the latest invention from PTA, who has spent nearly twenty years tinkering away at this story, making it perfect for the big screen. Loosely based off the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon, the film follows an ex-revolutionary who must find his daughter once a dangerous, evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years. What seems like a simple premise evolves into the grandest feature film PTA has made, combining social, political commentary with a wicked, sharp sense of humor, and centering it all around a father, mother, and daughter dynamic that heartwarming, sincere, and emotionally profound. By doing this, Anderson has made a successful odyssey that is the culmination of his career so far while pushing the director do things he's never done before and also things audiences have never seen on the big screen. It's the movie of our time and there was no way the boys weren't going to talk about it. Ryan, Jay, Erik, and Sophia breakdown their thoughts on the film, the various formats they've seen the film in, PTA's sentimental heart clashing with his audacious direction, how timely the film feels, how every performance is pitch-perfect, thoughts on the Christmas Adventurers club, and so much more including a new wrinkle in Jay's Oscar game where we put his expertise to the test and make him predict how many Oscars this film will be nominated for. It's a fun, long, wild ride full of SPOILERS, so if you haven't seen the film, you've been warned. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 3h09m. The guys will be back later this week to continue their series on the films of Yasujirō Ozu with a review of his next film, Floating Weeds. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Video: https://bit.ly/3VEvFth Actor icon, movie producer and director, and founder of the famous Sundance Festival, Robert Redford, passed away very recently, at age 89, after 60+ years of amazing professional work in the cinematic industry. In addition to his $1B+ career box office receipts, he won numerous Oscars and other major awards and helped kickstart the careers of many dozens of – then - unknown indie filmmakers like Quentin Taratino, Steve Soderbourgh, Richard Linklater, Rian Johnson and many others, too numerous to list here. Redford practiced a double, contradictory life. While continuing to work within the Hollywood system throughout his career (to finance his indie activities?), Redford also legitimized independent filmmaking for all time and -as much as any one person could- re-shaped how American movies were both made - and the neglected topics they dramatized. In this episode, Anuradha and I initially discuss Mr. Redford's overall career and then we replay a famous past episode of this pod where we discuss the Watergate Scandal – and concurrently – Redford's very first maiden, movie producing effort, “All The President's Men”, which became an unlikely bock office hit and won 4 Oscars.

Jimmy Kimmel broke his own record for most YouTube views ever for a monologue. Plus, on broadcast it was his most watched regularly scheduled episode, even with 20% of households not being able to tune in. Now that we understand the TV industry a little better, can you guess which shows are the most watched thanks to syndication? The Golden Bachelor had to answer for his ageist podcast crimes as women got out of the limo on Night 1. Sometimes you gotta break the rules for the right person. Happy National Daughters Day! Don't knock this stuff until you try it! Fast facts that have us questioning gravity. Flirting tips by generation. Plus, a reluctant update on Matty's dating life.
In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela kick things off with unusual headlines, from a nun in Ohio celebrating her 105th birthday on the golf course to a Texas man rescuing a newborn abandoned in a dumpster. The crew then reacts to a bizarre Homeland Security video that feels more like a Saturday morning cartoon than a government warning, before joking their way through fashion trends, forgotten shows, and the curious careers of Billy Zane, Bruce Campbell, and Alec Baldwin. The conversation shifts to Sean Penn's history of fights, Jude Law's awkward defense at the Oscars, and the infamous Will Smith slap. From there, they reminisce about '90s sitcoms, the odd rise and fall of TV formats, and the cultural status of pinky rings, Gucci loafers, and Louis Vuitton luggage. International politics enter the mix with Britain's recognition of Palestine and the spectacle of protest culture, which the hosts approach with sharp skepticism. Later, they highlight Corey Feldman's run on Dancing with the Stars, his Michael Jackson-inspired choreography, and his enduring pop culture mystique. The panel then examines Donald Trump and RFK Jr.'s warnings about Tylenol, questions surrounding autism, and the unintended consequences of health debates. The show closes with Gary Busey's probation for misconduct at a convention, his unpredictable career from Buddy Holly to Pet Judge, and a final detour into the surprising evolution of Anthony Michael Hall. Hi there, happy Thursday! What I'm Reading…* Food photographer extraordinaire Eva Kolenko (who's shot more than 50 cookbooks) has a new Substack and she's pulling back the curtain on her work. (Eva joined us in our Behind the Spine series back in 2022.)* Cookbook author Marian Burros died at 92 this week. NYT obit. While she authored a dozen-plus cookbooks in her career, the strongest remembrances are around her iconic plum torte, which she published in the Times in 1983 and has remained one of the paper's most-popular recipes. You can read Pete Wells paying tribute here—or, better yet, bake one yourself. * We're right in the heart of fall cookbook season, and this year's lineup is especially rich—stunning, memorable works that I've been lucky to dive into (nearly 100 new books have already crossed my desk!). For a taste of the top titles, check out new roundups from Eater, Epicurious, and Saveur. I'll be chatting with some of the authors on Salt + Spine and can't wait to share those conversations with you.Episode 173: Deuki Hong & Matt RodbardThis week, chef Deuki Hong and journalist Matt Rodbard join us to #TalkCookbooks! Deuki's latest restaurant SŌHN is an “all-day cafe and multi-use gathering space” in San Francisco. Matt is a writer who also hosts the prolific TASTE podcast (required listening for food lovers). When their first collaborative book, Koreatown, came out in 2016, it captivated food publishing. For many readers, it was the first time Korean American food culture was presented with such energy, personality, and depth. Eight years later, Deuki and Matt returned with a new, wider-lens look. The authors are quick to note that the new book, Koreaworld, isn't a sequel. It's a dispatch from a moment when Korean food and culture are everywhere: K-pop topping the charts, Parasite winning the Oscars, Seoul cafes setting global coffee trends, and a Korean tasting menu taking the top U.S. spot on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list this year. Academy Award winning make-up FX artist Christopher Nelson (KILL BILL Vol 1 & 2, SUICIDE SQUAD 2016, HALLOWEEN 2018, HALLOWEEN KILLS, HALLOWEEN ENDS, AMERICAN HORROR STORY) joins Adam and Joe in the ArieScope studio to discuss his incredible career journey. From growing up on a healthy diet of Fangoria magazines and going to the movies as often as possible… to becoming consumed with the dream of making movies after seeing NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD on TV and then enamored with make-up FX after seeing DAWN OF THE DEAD in the theater… to a lifetime of FX work that lead him all the way to China where he worked with the great Quentin Tarantino on the KILL BILL movies… to winning Emmy Awards for his work on AMERICAN HORROR STORY… to almost walking away from working on SUICIDE SQUAD (2016) two different times before winning an Academy Award for his work on the film… to his amazing and surreal experience at the Oscars… to the pressure that came with taking the FX reigns on the beloved HALLOWEEN franchise and its highly opinionated fan base… to what it meant to see his Michael Myers mask on a banner for HALLOWEEN (2018) hanging from a sound stage at Universal Studios… to his thoughts on the current state of the industry and entertainment in general, Chris is a true giant at his craft and this candid conversation is one that every cinephile is sure to enjoy. As you know I seldom talk about current events on this podcast. But a few years ago I did address one. It was the 2022 Oscars where actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock. I did not see it and didn't pay much attention, but then I saw a public statement made by Andy Andrews that caught my attention. I've known Andy for some time and had him on the podcast here three or so times and been a guest on his podcast. I find him sober minded and insightful, so when he addressed the event, I took it as an opportunity to discuss the concept of our actions vs our intent. More on that in a minute. If you don't know Andy, he is a multiple New York Times best seller with his book, The Traveler's Gift selling many millions. He's a highly sought for and highly paid speaker, he's spoken for, by request, four different US Presidents. The New York Times cited Andy as “someone who has quietly become one of the most influential people in America.” I know Andy as someone many big influencers turn to for wisdom. He's a sage of life changing lessons. So here we talk about the Oscar incident. I for one, feel that someone's motive and intent behind an action should weigh in and be considered, and failure to do so is negligent. But regardless, many people take our actions at face value and the can have grave consequences. This is our discussion in this podcast. At the time this originally aired, Andy was launching a community called Wisdom Harbour, and I wanted to have a frank discussion on what he saw as primary cultural needs and from a business interest, why he created the Wisdom Harbour community in response to it. You'll hear much of his answer is around cultural literacy, but I'm going to take you behind the scenes on why he crafted it the way he did. Find Andy anywhere, just search for Andy Andrews. Coffee Reading Gets Real: “Who's Whispering in Your Ear?”Pol' delivers a powerful coffee cup reading that stops Jamie in his tracks, diving into:· Emotional stagnancy· Life-changing decisions· The blurred line between Jamie the person and the persona· And if he should finally put a ring on girlfriend Elyssa's fingerIt's insightful, eerie, and so accurate it gives Jamie chills. “You're 100% right,” he admits. “I have to be all of me.
