Suds & Search | Interviews With Today's Search Marketing Experts

My guest on this week's episode of Suds & Search is Krystal Taing, Director of Pre-sales Solutions at Uberall. Krystal is one of the leading experts in Local SEO. She's a platinum-level Google product expert. She hosts a training program on Wix. She's a frequent webinar host on platforms like BrightLocal, Duda, and many other places. She appears on virtually every list of the top local SEOs in the world. She is also on the faculty at LocalU. I'm sure I'm forgetting several other important contributions, but suffice it to say that when it comes to Local SEO, Krystal Taing is world-class. It's an interesting time for Local SEO. Darren Shaw of Whitespark recently released the Local Search Ranking Factors, thus beginning the annual tradition of Local SEO nerds scouring the findings, debating, discussing, and learning about how Google's local algorithm is evolving. Krystal was a contributor to that study. I'm going to ask her about what is changing and how small businesses can better position themselves for success. Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Krystal Taing. We'll talk about what you should do to appear more prominently in local results, what you shouldn't do if you hope to avoid a suspension, and we'll spend a little time talking about the Google product expert program. Google LSA adds new categories, ChatGPT changing local SAAS, Everyone needs a “how we use AI” FAQ

The Near Memo

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2023 32:23

Google LSA expands to new categories & faces spam:  Google has added new, high value categories to their Local SErvice Ads program. They continue to target ever more service type businesses. While the pricing for this simpler product has gone up due to the added auction capabilities, in many markets it is still a good value. It is also important for service type businesses to watch for first mover opportunities in their local markets. With this link: Local Service Finder - Pro List businesses can assess which categories in which geographies have more opportunities. However in some urban, highly competitive markets like personal injury law & locksmiths, not only has pricing gone crazy, spam has as well. Google has added a new LSA spam review reporting form to cope with some of the fake review issues. ChatGPT making rapid and differentiating inroads into SAAS tools for Local:  The players in the local space have all become pretty similar to each other offering listings, review management, Google Posts with little to distinguish them. But with the advent of large language models in general and ChatGPT specifically, many have begun to offer unique tools on top of their core products that leverage the generative AI capabilities. The value of generative AI will first be realized in the SAAS world where the benefits can be easily added to existing products to increase business productivity. Hubspot's ChatUX shows how this can be integrated into a CMS and Uberall shows how it can improve access to a company's granular data like inventory. Why every company needs a “how we use AI” FAQ:  Wired recently published an article on how they will use generative AI tools vis a vis their written and visual content. They detail whether they will use AI to write or edit articles (they won't), whether they will use it to generate ideas and headlines (they might) and whether they will use it to create story graphics (they won't due to artists not receiving royalties).Jennifer Slegg on Twitter, using a  creative Google search, demonstrated just how many businesses are currently using generative AI and blindly copying and pasting it onto their websites. This raises the question of whether not just Wired but everyone that creates content - writers, SEO firms, SEMs and more - should consider both an internal code of ethics and a forward facing statement of those values. The Near Memo is a weekly conversation about Search, Social, and Commerce: What happened, why it matters, and the implications for local businesses and national brands.near memo ep 104Subscribe to our 3x per week newsletter at https://www.nearmedia.co/subscribe/

Apple Maps has increasingly become an important source for new customers and these developments are likely to continue as Maps takes its place in the real world. Apple's long term development of Apple Maps when viewed together with the many other cross product developments point to an Apple AR future which looks quite different than Facebook's metaverse. How Does Voice Search Work With SEO

The SEO industry is embracing voice search optimization with enthusiasm. It is the fastest-growing search trend as people adopt voice search and voice-based assistants more than ever. What is Voice Search? Also referred to as voice-enabled, allows the web user to utilize a voice command to search the Internet, a website, or an app. In a broader definition, voice search includes open-domain keyword query on any information on the Internet, for example in Google Voice Search, Cortana, Siri and Amazon Echo. Smartphones using iOS and Android give users the option to enable Speech to Text Searching Assistant. The Speech to Text Searching Assistant makes it faster and easier to search apps, web search, or image and video search for the content you want. On average, people type at a speed of 40 words per minute. Voice interactions are more efficient in comparison at 150 words per min. eMarketer Top Ways to Optimize Your Website for Voice Search As people rely on voice search as it is quick and to the point, businesses will need to assure that  their content is optimized. Let us glance at the top ways of optimization for voice. 1.    Restructure your content Your content is the foundation of your SEO. Voice optimization also depends on the content; however, rethink the way you write your content. Use conversation language. Focus on the detailed answers to common questions. Include FAQs in your product detail pages Improve content readability Nearly 70% of queries made to Google Assistants are expressed in natural language and constructed very differently from manually typed search queries. Think with google 2.    Target Long-Tail Keywords When people search using the search bar, they use short phrases. e.g., Julia Donaldson's books. However, when they use speech-to-text, they use long questions, e.g., What are the best Julia Donaldson's books? Google, Yelp, and Bing together have a 90% share of the world's search directories, according to a study conducted by Uberall. search engine watch 3.    Use Schema Markup For Voice Search Schema markup tells Google more about your website. It is like adding a description for Google to search, classify, and organize the website. It is not visible to the visitors because we do not direct it towards them. Schema gives you an edge over other businesses, but it may not affect your rankings directly. Nearly half of voice users turn to local search for business review ratings and discover new businesses (at 47% and 46%, respectively) Bright local 4.    Think Mobile & Local People search on the go using their mobiles. Usually, these searches are focused on the local businesses, e.g., restaurants near me. Optimize your content separately for computer and mobile versions. Mobile versions should focus on local searches. Another voice assistant statistics reveal that the most common uses for mobile voice assistants are in the car while driving (62%) and while relaxing at home (38%). emarketer 5.    Improve Website Loading Time Google favors fast loading websites more than slow speed websites. If your website loads slowly, Google will not use it for voice search results. You can use compressed images and videos, use async to reduce JavaScript parsing, and reduce redirects. Voice optimization is the fastest growing SEO trend; therefore, websites need to work on it. For voice optimization, you will work on your website's content, technology, and responsiveness. When it comes to voice shopping using smart speakers, the higher percentage of voice searches belong to men. They take to the activity more than women. emarketer

The numerous articles and blogs we read about data and technological inductions show that we are still in a transition and adjustment phase when it comes to the tools we use to search, and one of those tools that is rapidly emerging is voice search. So, are we ready for this? As users we are slowly migrating to voice search while most small and medium businesses are still struggling to optimize their online presence and not even thinking about voice search. Studies show that enterprise companies and brands are also not optimized for voice search. The biggest question is what kind of impact will these new user search preferences have on businesses. Will businesses be able to ride the wave, or will they always be playing catch-up? This episode explores online user presences and how consumer behaviour is changing and the impact on how business are being found today in our new emerging economy of choice.
