On this episode, you'll hear the remarkable story of Bass Pale Ale. This story begins at the dawn of the industrial age, and charts Bass's rise as one of the first global brewing brands. Over the course of two centuries, its pale ales evolved to meet the times, and today we know Bass as one of Britain's classic cask ales—a beer enjoying a current renaissance among the country's pubs. In many ways, in telling the story of Bass, we're recounting the history of brewing in Britain over the past two centuries: its technological and industrial rise, the collapse that befell the giants over the past generation, and, perhaps, an encouraging revival. You'll hear from Harry White, who started at Bass in the research and development department in 1977. He would become Director of Quality Assurance in 1989, and stayed with the company until 2007. Today he is the chairman of the National Brewery Heritage Trust in Burton Upon Trent. You'll also hear from Pete Brown, one of the most celebrated beer writers in the world and the author of over a dozen books, including his most recent, Tasting Notes – The Art and Science of Pairing Beer and Music. It's an amazing brewery and an amazing story, all befitting one of the world's most iconic beers.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This episode is sponsored by:RahrBSGThis episode of the One Iconic Beer podcast is supported by RahrBSG – trusted supplier to brewers, distillers, and beverage makers across North America.  From the barley field to your brewhouse, we're proud to support the people behind great beer with the ingredients, expertise, and service they depend on.  Whether you're brewing the next great American Double IPA or crafting an award-winning continental lager, RahrbSG provides the industry's finest quality, selection, and support. We think the answer is unequivocally yes, and the maths and the principle of pacing explains why.(00:25:50) Praise for Puck Pieterse, sympathy for Marlen Reusser and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, and a wonder about the 'mature' podium, and the prospect of a handover to the next generation in good time, just not 'our time'(00:41:41) The World U20 Championships, where a 17 year old ran 7:28 solo for 3000m, Tate Taylor doubled up in 9.94 and 19.83, and the ever-turning carousel of youth talent that is sometimes derailed by injury and sometimes deposed by the next young phenom(00:45:46) Jakob Ingebrigtsen returns and wins the European 5000m title in 13:16, off a slow race that played into his hands, and he explains, correctly, that a 5000m is not a test of speed but of how much speed you have left. He also promises he'll be "astonishingly a lot better" next time.(00:52:32) Jonah Koech gets a three year ban after an adverse passport finding. We explain how the biological passport actually works, why two suspicious samples means the values must have been wildly out of the norm, and why his 3.2% improvement should have invited scepticism long before the blood results did. Performance is not proof, but pattern recognition lives on, with this its latest illustration.(01:07:46) The WNBA has no eligibility policy, so two former NBA players have declared for the women's draft to prove the point. We discuss why choosing not to decide is itself a decision, how people are choosing to pretend a problem doesn't exist (or that it doesn't matter if it does), and contrast this with the WTA who have implemented screening for eligibility, and just gotten on with it(01:15:29) And finally, the origins of the steeplechase, which begins with two blokes, an Irish pub, a wager, and two church steeples. Plus a nutritionist on social media who watched 96 seconds and decided we had lost all credibility. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dr. Kellie Owens, is an assistant professor in the section of medical ethics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She's a sociologist and empirical bioethicist studying how digital technologies are woven into the fabric of healthcare and society and how governance structures can better support those affected by technological change. She also leads the responsible AI review process for the Division of Applied AI Technologies and with the IRB. PART 2 In medicine, we do know that examples of bias and harm from that bias have happened. The most famous case was brought to our attention from Ziad Obermeyer and his colleagues in Science in 2019. It was examining racial discrimination resulting from a commercial algorithm that was widely used by health systems to identify patients with complex health needs that might need extra support. Instead, we found that the algorithm was prioritizing white patients over black patients and was reducing the number of black patients who should have been enrolled in those care management programs by more than half. In some ways, there are pretty easy ways to fix these kinds of biases and problems if we're attuned to them. So once we see them, we can usually fix them. In this case, training the model using active chronic conditions rather than total costs would have significantly reduced bias.  The point is that understanding the social context in which an algorithm is developed and is operating in is really important. Otherwise, it can be pretty easy to make mistakes like this if you're not paying attention to disparate impacts in the ways that our choices in algorithm development can have impacts on fairness and outcomes for different groups. Another major ethics consideration touched upon in her presentation is mostly about data privacy.

My new book, Own Or Be Owned, is all about building a business so good it doesn't need you. More profit, less pain. It's out September 18, grab your ticket to the launch event here: https://contrarianthinking.biz/oobo_bigdeal - cs You've been visualizing success. Watching the vision board. Repeating the affirmations. Trusting the universe to deliver. Here's the truth: the more vividly you fantasize about success, the worse you perform. And the science proves it. The Secret sold 30 million copies by promising that if you visualize wealth hard enough, the universe will deliver it. But two decades of research shows the opposite. NYU psychologists tracked college graduates and found that students who spent the most time in positive fantasies about their dream jobs sent out fewer applications, got fewer offers, and earned lower salaries two years later. Your brain books the fantasy as a partial payment on the real thing, giving you the reward before you've done the work. Manifestation isn't fuel. It's anesthesia. This episode breaks down the exact frameworks elite builders use instead, why Buddhist monks sit with decaying bodies to rehearse death, and the three anti-manifestation moves that turn goals into reality. From the Stoic practice of premeditation of evils to the WHOOP method that doubles your odds of success, you'll learn why imagining failure makes you stronger and how to engineer systems that make your obituary impossible. In this episode, you'll learn: Why NYU research proves that positive fantasies kill performance and how students who visualized success earned 24 pounds less in weight loss studies and lower salaries than peers who confronted reality The five step anti-manifestation practice: write your business obituary, name what caused the death, run the survival check, extract the system, and put it on the calendar quarterly The Stockdale Paradox: why optimists died in Vietnam POW camps and how brutal faith in the destination plus brutal honesty about the path is what separates winners from wishful thinkers Why announcing goals out loud makes you quit 33% faster and how premature applause becomes a paycheck your brain cashes before the work exists The WHOOP framework: Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan, and how this method doubles your odds of hitting goals by naming the exact moment resistance shows up and engineering the if-then response in advance And one more thing for the business owners: stop making million dollar decisions alone! The most damaging hours of the Lindsay Clancy murder trial belonged to her own defense attorney on Day 10. Then the prosecution took the exact same testimony and turned it around.Kevin Reddington spent the morning at Plymouth Superior Court walking Dr. Jennifer Tufts through everything she did not have. No file from the perinatal clinic her patient was attending. No conversation with the family. No signed authorization that would have unlocked either. Tufts, who is a named defendant in a malpractice claim over this care, told the jury she did not believe she had been negligent.Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague began her redirect by asking Tufts to describe what psychosis looks like in an appointment, then asked whether she had ever seen any of it in Lindsay Clancy. Tufts answered no. She said she saw no mania either, and described the presentation as the opposite.Sprague then built out the state's theory. Clancy scheduled her own appointments. She took herself to an emergency room without being sent. She reported her medications and her reactions to them with precision. On the family question, Sprague established that federal privacy law barred Tufts from calling relatives at all.One more detail landed for the prosecution. Clancy reported on January 16, 2023 that she had to force herself out of bed, and Tufts testified she had no idea her patient had taken the children to the Museum of Science days earlier.Tony lays out both readings of the same day and where the afternoon witness leaves them.Clancy is presumed innocent of the charges against her and has pleaded not guilty. No verdict has been returned.END LINKSJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? We can envision what our lives may look like in the future or revisit the past. Psychologist Cassandra Vieten argues that using our imagination is not about immersing ourselves in a fantasy world. It's a powerful tool that affects our physical and mental health, our relationships with others, and life trajectories and careers. Vieten joins us to talk about her research, and her new book, “Imagine That: Transform How You Think, Feel, and Live with the Science of Imagination.”

What role does empathy play in the healing process?Healing has become one of the defining pursuits of our time. Whether through medicine, therapy, or countless approaches to emotional and psychological well-being, people everywhere are searching for ways to heal.Yet there is one essential force that, while often acknowledged, is still profoundly underestimated: empathy. You've probably heard of mirror neurons. Science has shown that we're wired to mirror one another's experiences. Watch someone accidentally slam a door on their fingers, God forbid, and you'll instinctively cringe. You may even cry out, "Ouch!" Though the pain isn't yours, you feel it because, in some way, you have entered their experience. But what if empathy is more than a reflex? What if it's one of the most powerful healing forces we possess? Can another person begin to heal simply because they know they're not alone? Because they feel deeply seen, understood, and held with genuine care and compassion?Perhaps healing doesn't begin only with the right treatment. Perhaps it begins with the reassuring presence of another human being who truly feels your pain. Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson as we explore The Empathy Effect—how the simple act of feeling, listening, and caring can become a profound path to healing.

Strong leaders know that facts alone rarely change minds. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Danny Bobrow explore why authentic connection comes before persuasion and how leaders can communicate in ways that earn trust, strengthen relationships, and inspire action.   In this episode, Dean Newlund and Danny Bobrow discuss: Lessons from endurance sports and teamwork The Persuasion Blueprint framework Persuasion in digital and AI-assisted communication Building stronger relationships through emotional awareness Leadership communication during difficult conversations   Key Takeaways: Begin difficult conversations by helping people feel understood before trying to convince them. Care and emotional attunement create the foundation for collaboration. Let enthusiasm grow by discovering what already motivates the other person instead of overwhelming them with your own excitement. In digital communication, take time to write thoughtful, respectful messages that provide context and show consideration. Before debating emotional issues, understand where someone is coming from instead of leading with facts alone. Use AI to support your thinking, but preserve authentic judgment and relationships where trust depends on your own words.   "What people are really craving is to be understood, not to be impressed.” — Danny Bobrow   About Danny Bobrow: Daniel A. “Danny” Bobrow is the creator of The Art of First Impressions™ and The Persuasion Blueprint™, communication mastery programs that help businesses build trust and drive ethical conversion. In this solo episode of The Thermostat, Jason V Barger tackles the reality that culture is dynamic—shaped moment by moment by how we think, act, and interact. To avoid complacency and toxic stagnation, executives cannot simply "set it and forget it." This conversation explores the critical distinction between "oxygen givers" who fuel team energy with solutions and gratitude, and "oxygen takers" who drain environments through gossip, blame, and triangulation. Backed by neurological insights from the National Science Foundation into how negative, repetitive thoughts clutter our decision-making, Jason outlines a proactive approach to clearing the air and optimizing focus. Essential listening for C-Suite executives, HR directors, and team leaders committed to shaping compelling cultures, this episode provides six actionable strategies to sustain a thriving ecosystem—from culture-driven onboarding to the undeniable power of congregation. Episode Notes & Timestamps: Intro: Jason sets the stage for a conversation on the specific mindsets needed to breathe oxygen into your culture and fuel your team. A Milestone Celebration: Thanking listeners as The Thermostat is recognized as the #13 top authentic leadership podcast in the U.S. by Million Podcasts. Culture is Dynamic: Why organizational health isn't static and the dangers of a "set it and forget it" leadership mentality. Oxygen Givers vs. Oxygen Takers: Defining the behaviors of people who inject life and possibility into a room versus those who suck the energy out through negativity. The Science of Cluttered Minds: Analyzing the reality that 80% of our 12,000 to 60,000 daily thoughts skew negative, and how that toxic air stunts decision-making. Identifying Your Air Quality: Taking a step back to evaluate the conditions, environments, and people that either energize your leadership or drain it. Strategies 1 & 2: Articulating the culture clearly and identifying the specific actions and behaviors that support or destroy your ecosystem. Strategies 3 & 4: Rethinking hiring and onboarding for the first 90 days, and the necessity of proactively developing emerging leaders. Strategies 5 & 6: The power of congregation through regional culture summits and why ongoing leadership development is required to model the temperature. Water always wins. The question is whether we let it cool the planet while it does — or keep fighting it until there's nothing left to fight with.Erica Gies is the author of Water Always Wins: Thriving in an Age of Drought and Deluge, and is currently writing her second book, Roots to Sky: How Life and Water Can Help Cool Earth's Climate, due in 2028. She is an environmental journalist who has spent more than a decade travelling the world to document how communities are rebuilding their relationship with water — not by controlling it better, but by understanding what water wants and working with it.The common climate narrative — decarbonise, bring fossil fuel emissions to zero, done — is no longer sufficient on its own. Water vapour accounts for roughly half the greenhouse effect. We've degraded 75% of the earth's land surface, largely by draining it. And more sea level rise comes from pumping groundwater than from melting glaciers — something a 1970 MIT Press report already knew. We've only accelerated since. The good news: this is something we can change relatively quickly through land restoration. And water is absolutely key.In this episode:— Why water always wins and what it means to ask what water wants rather than fighting it— How growing up in California, built on extreme water engineering, shaped Erica's obsession— Why she shifted from surface water to the atmosphere for her new book Roots to Sky— The 1970 MIT report that flagged pumping groundwater raises sea levels — 55 years of acceleration since— Why 87% of wetlands drained, two thirds of rivers dammed, and cities doubled since 1992 have made our water problems worse, not better— Why the best water solutions are modular and decentralised — and why that's empowering— What beavers in California are teaching farmers who spent eighty years shooting them— Why investors optimising single variables are running out of natural buffers faster than they think— Why land back for indigenous peoples may be one of the highest-return interventions available— Her magic wand answer: caring for non-humans — and why she thinks we're closer to it than it seems.More about this episode.Thoughts? The underlying science has not moved. There is no link between vaccines and autism. That question has been studied for decades across millions of children in multiple countries, and autism has a substantial genetic component. Spreading the schedule out is not a neutral change. It means more office visits, more billing, more needle sticks per child, and protection arriving later than it should, against diseases that are already returning. The country has seen its worst measles outbreaks in decades, concentrated in undervaccinated communities. NOTUS found that RFK Jr.'s 72 page MAHA report on chronic childhood disease cited at least seven studies that do not exist, alongside broken links and misstated findings. Epidemiologist Katherine Keyes was among the named authors who said they never wrote the papers attributed to them. It can affect emotions, relationships, sleep, eating, executive function, and everyday life.Women are frequently missed because they may present primarily with inattentive symptoms rather than the stereotypical hyperactive presentation.Hormonal changes can worsen ADHD symptoms, particularly when estrogen drops during the menstrual cycle, postpartum period, and perimenopause.Anxiety and depression can coexist with ADHD, but they can also be diagnoses that obscure underlying ADHD.Rejection sensitive dysphoria describes an intense emotional or physical response to real or perceived rejection or criticism and can be particularly disruptive for people with ADHD.Finding the right ADHD treatment is highly individualized. Medication can be one tool alongside behavioral strategies and other forms of support.Dr. Hamdani emphasizes that the goal of ADHD medication isn't to make someone feel “perfect,” but to provide consistent support that allows them to function more like they do on a good day.Emotional sensitivity isn't necessarily something that needs to be eliminated. The goal can be learning to better understand and regulate it.Guest Bio: Dr. Sasha HamdaniDr. Sasha Hamdani is a board-certified psychiatrist and ADHD specialist who has both personal and professional experience with ADHD. After being diagnosed with ADHD as a child, she went on to become a physician and now specializes in treating ADHD and helping patients better understand the condition beyond traditional symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity. Dr. Ted Lain welcomes Dr. Mona Shariari — Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, Associate Director of Clinical Trials at Central Connecticut Dermatology, and host of the Medical Sisterhood Podcast — for a deep dive into one of dermatology's most persistent challenges: polypharmacy and topical confusion.Ted and Mona look back at the old-school regimens dermatologists used to write out — one topical for the face, another for the body, different products for weekdays versus weekends — and how that complexity set patients up for poor adherence and side effects like skin thinning and hypopigmentation from steroid overuse. They discuss why once-daily, non-steroidal options like roflumilast (Zoryve) cream and foam have changed the equation, allowing head-to-toe use without the body surface area and duration limits that come with topical steroids.Topics covered include:Why systemic absorption is a bigger concern with topical steroids in pediatric patientsClinical trial insights on roflumilast for seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasisThe foam formulation's use in sensitive areas like the scalp, face, and skin foldsHow roflumilast compares to older PDE4 inhibitors and topical calcineurin inhibitorsWhy the drug's mechanism works across both TH1- and TH2-driven inflammationThe impact of once-daily dosing on patient compliance and long-term outcomesPractical tips for talking to patients transitioning off topical steroidsThis episode is sponsored by Arcutis Biotherapeutics, makers of Zoryve (roflumilast).Got a question or an idea for a future episode? Black-and-white Warblers are tiny songbirds that breed in North America's deciduous forests and winter as far south as Colombia. They feast on insects gleaned from leaves or plucked from cracks in tree bark. You'll often find them clinging to tree trunks or the undersides of thick branches — acting more like a nuthatch than a warbler. Like many songbirds, Black-and-white Warblers migrate at night — using the stars to navigate. Unfortunately, nocturnal light pollution can disrupt their sense of direction or cause them to collide with buildings. You can help Black-and-white Warblers by turning off outdoor lights and shading your windows at night, especially during migration season.
