The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast - Vintage Sci-Fi Short Stories

Two men cross into a mysterious fourth-dimensional world in search of a rare element that could save their own civilization — or destroy another. But the moment they arrive, they discover they are not the only ones with a hidden agenda… and not everyone plans to return alive. Shadow World by Ray Cummings. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. You may be wondering why I haven't mentioned Rise the wellness drink for some time. A listener gave us a scathing review and said I was shilling for a product of questionable origin. I thought, what if he's right? So I didn't take Rise for to see what would happen. Two weeks later in the middle of the night I woke up to horrific diabetic neuropathy pain and couldn't go back to sleep. Two nights later, same thing. So I started taking Rise again and I will never stop. No more pain! You can give us a 1 star review and you can think whatever you want to think even though you have never taken it. I take Rise, and I know, I don't think or hope it works, I know it works for me. No more pain, more energy, I feel better when I take Rise and I'm telling you about it because I know it works. I don't just recommend Rise, I depend on it to be pain free. Try it for yourself, there's a link in the description and on lostscifi.com.

Greg Schulze has spent more than two decades helping build one of the most influential companies in modern travel — Expedia Group. But here's the thing about Greg — he doesn't talk like a corporate executive. He talks like a traveler. He's lived and worked all over the world. He named his dog Kaya after a coconut jam he discovered while living in Southeast Asia. And he still lights up when describing what it feels like to walk through an airport on the cusp of somewhere new. Greg's career has spanned from American Airlines in the early 2000s to leading Expedia Group's global commercial strategy today — a period that's seen the birth of OTAs, the rise of mobile, and now, the dawn of the AI-powered traveler. In this episode, Greg and I explore: How Expedia has evolved from a dot-com upstart to a travel empire spanning Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo. What he's learned from 20 years of guiding one of the most complex, global marketplaces in the world. The real story behind Expedia's relationship with independent operators — and what “partner forward” actually means. How the tension between discovery and control will define the next decade of travel planning. And why he believes the future of OTAs will be built not on ads or algorithms — but on trust, clarity, and flexibility. Greg's a global citizen in the truest sense of the word — deeply thoughtful about the human side of technology and the emotional heartbeat of travel itself. This conversation is the second episode in my new Behind the Stays series, The Future of Travel, recorded live at EXPLORE Connect in Austin, Texas — a gathering of the world's top vacation rental operators and hospitality leaders. If you care about where the industry is headed — and how the people behind its biggest brands are thinking about discovery, booking, and guest experience in the years ahead — this is a must-listen.   Connect with Greg: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregschulze/?originalSubdomain=uk Connect with Zach: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zacharybusekrus/ Apply to join the Journey Alliance: http://journey.com/alliance/   Behind the Stays is brought to you by Journey — a first-of-its-kind loyalty program that brings together an alliance of the world's top independently owned and operated stays and allows travelers to earn points and perks on boutique hotels, vacation rentals, treehouses, ski chalets, glamping experiences and so much more. Welcome to Daily Detroit — your guide to what's next, what's now, and what matters in the Motor City. Today, we're diving deep into one of Detroit's biggest challenges and, possibly, its greatest opportunity: what to do with our city's vast tracts of vacant land. Since 1950, Detroit has lost 65% of its population, creating more than 100,000 vacant lots and 18 square miles of unused land. Right now, the city spends more than $1.3 million each year just mowing the grass on these empty parcels, among other costs. But what if these vacant lots were transformed into something new? Parks, forests, community gardens, and green spaces that could help stabilize neighborhoods, improve health and safety, and help us adapt to a changing climate? That's the question at the heart of the latest report from Detroit Future City: "Saving for the Future." To break this all down, I'm joined by two key voices behind the report. Kimberly Faisson, Vice President for Thriving, Resilient Neighborhoods, and Sarah Hayosh, Director of Land Use and Sustainability at Detroit Future City. We'll talk about how a dedicated land conservancy could be a game-changer for Detroit, what the research says about green space and community health, and the practical steps ahead to make this vision real. "Geophysics plays a central role in this energy transition because it provides the tools and insights needed to understand, manage, and optimize subsurface resources. These resources are critical for both traditional and renewable energy systems." Geophysics is essential for geothermal energy, carbon storage, hydrogen storage, and critical minerals. Joël Le Calvez and Erkan Ay explain how methods like multi-physics workflows and distributed acoustic sensing are improving reliability, scalability, and safety. They also highlight the skills and mindset geophysicists need to succeed in a rapidly changing energy landscape. Read the October issue of The Leading Edge that features a special section about geophysics for new energies at https://library.seg.org/toc/leedff/44/10. KEY TAKEAWAYS > Geophysics provides the foundation for safe, efficient, and scalable use of subsurface resources in the energy transition. > Multi-physics workflows and DAS technologies reduce uncertainty and improve monitoring of geothermal and storage projects. > Future geophysicists must combine technical expertise with adaptability, collaboration, and field experience. GUEST BIOS Joël Le Calvez is Principal Geologist at SLB, where he develops software for processing, visualization, and interpretation of microseismic monitoring data. His work supports applications ranging from hydraulic fracture treatment to CO₂ sequestration and geothermal injection, using downhole, shallow wellbore, and surface arrays. Before joining SLB, Joël contributed to research at the Bureau of Economic Geology's Applied Geodynamics Laboratory and at Etudes et Recherches Géotechniques. He holds a Ph.D. in salt tectonics, an M.Sc. in geosciences, and a B.Sc. in physics. Erkan Ay is an accomplished geophysicist with more than 18 years of international experience across oil and gas, carbon capture and storage, and academic research. He is recognized for advancing techniques in microseismic monitoring, DAS, 4D VSP, and seismic-while-drilling. Erkan's work integrates seismology and petrophysics to better characterize complex subsurface structures. Currently, Erkan serves as Chair of the SEG Research Committee and Vice Chair of the SEG IMAGE 2026 Technical Committee, guiding collaborative efforts to advance geophysics for sustainable energy solutions.

He and CJ unpack the mechanics of community: the tradeoffs between exclusivity and expansion, why venture capital doesn't always fit human-centered businesses, and how Pavilion balances pricing, curation, and access. They also explore the evolution of the GTM function — from the myth of the plug-and-play VP of Sales to how AI is reshaping RevOps, forecasting, and leadership.
