Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/832 Presented By: Visit Idaho  Mike Komara walks us through the mindset of a competitor — and how that mindset makes you a better everyday angler. From hand-me-down rods in Pittsburgh to medals with Team USA, Mike explains why simplicity wins: a single-fly approach, smart microleader setups, and a handful of adaptable rods. We talk translating spring-creek precision to big western rivers, reading water and bugs the moment you step out of the car, and the small technical moves (tuck casts, inverted drifts, matching bottom speed) that turn drifts into fish. It's part practical how-to, part origin story, and a reminder that good fishing usually comes from thinking less about gear and more about the water. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/832

In this podcast episode, I'm joined by Lurch and Patreon Member (and Indian Motorcycle rider) Anthony Peters.  We talk about the big announcement that Polaris sold off it's majority ownership of Indian Motorcycles.  In one of the biggest shake-ups the motorcycle world has seen in years, Polaris has announced that it's selling a majority stake in Indian Motorcycle to the private equity firm Carolwood LP.  This move has many riders and industry insiders asking the same question — is Indian Motorcycle in trouble, or are they gearing up for something big?  It's a bold, unexpected shift that could either ignite new growth or put the brand in a risky position. Let's take a closer look at what's really happening and why it matters. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE According to Polaris, this separation will allow both companies to focus more strategically on what they do best.  For Polaris, that means doubling down on its most profitable segments: off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, and boats.  Indian Motorcycle only accounts for about 7% of Polaris' total annual revenue — roughly $478 million.  By selling Indian, Polaris expects to increase annual earnings by $50 million and boost earnings per share by $1.00, which is a solid short-term win for shareholders.  For Indian, this could mean more freedom to innovate and make faster decisions without having to compete for corporate attention within Polaris' massive portfolio. Under the theme of “Living in Harmony with Nature and Future Generations,” the winners for 2025 “bring to light the future orientation of the way we take decisions at [a] time that there are multiple crises facing ourselves as a species, but also the planet,” he says. The winning legal and legislative initiatives span seven nations, from South Africa to Uganda, Panama, Spain, Aotearoa New Zealand, Bhutan and Austria. The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement (BBNJ), which establishes a binding U.N. treaty on the use of ocean resources beyond national borders, was among the initiatives awarded. The movement that granted legal personhood to the Whanganui River in Aotearoa New Zealand was also recognized. Both of these cases were previously the focus of Mongabay Newscast episodes hosted by Rachel Donald. “Nature doesn't need us, we need nature,” Gunasekera says. “And I think that's the realization we are coming to quite slowly, because any act that we have has a positive impact on the planet. But also, if you're not careful, every act could have a negative impact. Impact on nature has no national boundaries or borders. It has a global impact.” Find the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify. All past episodes are also listed here at the Mongabay website. Host Anne Thompson explores the diverse and innovative methods being employed in Australia to build and retain the technical workforce in the mining industry.  From attracting new talent, to supporting early career geoscientists, to training professionals from other industries - this episode might just change your perspective on what is possible.First up, Brendan Howard, General Manager for Technical Capability at Rio Tinto and a founder of the MiEX (Minerals Industry Experience) Program, addresses the mining sector's shrinking and less diverse talent pipeline. The success of MiEX, a collaborative industry-led program, highlights the value of early engagement with undergraduate students. The pilot in January 2025 drew over 500 applicants for 69 places with 90% of participants expressing intent to pursue mining careers.  New conversations are underway in North America to bring this exciting opportunity to more students.Richard Lilly, the University of Adelaide presents NExUS (National Exploration Undercover School) based in South Australia, which provides hands-on experience and essential training to geoscience students, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements. NExUS combines technical learning with professional networking, using the South Australian Drill Core Library and nearby field sites to expose students to geophysics, core logging, and exploration through cover. Lilly is now stepping down after 10 years as Director, with the hope that this successful model will continue and be expanded to other jurisdictions to better prepare geoscientists for evolving exploration challenges.Lastly, Deng Ngang Deng, from Target Mining Resources, shares his inspiring journey from South Sudan to professional geoscientist in Western Australia.  Deng was involved in establishing the Pan Africa Resource Reporting Code (PARC) and an invited plenary speaker at SEG 2024 in Namibia. At home in Australia, he has developed an innovative approach to training and employing geoscientists and other technical mining workers.  Initiated during the pandemic, the company continues to expand and add to their portfolio of skills they train for, successfully filling a gap in mining recruitment. Many thanks to Avo Media for production support.  Theme music is Confluence by Eastwindseastwindsmusic.com

Our ability to produce American corn is outgrowing demand for the crop.   And if growers are going to get some relief from sagging corn prices, our nation's innovators are going to have to find new uses for the commodity. Fortunately, corn is a versatile crop that can be processed into all manner of plastics, fibers and distillations. And with this year's Consider Corn Challenge, the NCGA shined a spotlight on some of these innovations, while also incentivizing new research. So in this episode, we meet Curtis Firestone, the co-founder and CEO of Aerterra, an air filter manufacturer that sources its household and commercial products from the corn that we grow in our fields. The filters are eco-friendly, and can be used interchangeably with the petroleum-based versions that are standard in homes and businesses. We'll be joined as well by Chad Epler, a farmer from southeast Kansas who serves as the chair of the NCGA action team dedicated research and new uses for corn. Together, we'll discuss how the Consider Corn challenge is a game changer for innovators, how it's moving the needle on corn demand, and what other future uses we're pioneering.

Childcare is a huge challenge for many families, and this is of course true for small towns. When Alex and Tyler's daycare closed their small town of Ottertail, MN (pop. 500), Tyler half-jokingly said, “We should just start our own daycare.” Well, that's pretty much what that did. Two days later, he had a plan and three years later, they're opening a nonprofit daycare to serve their community that could change how rural communities approach childcare. And we are so here for it! About Tyler & Alex: Tyler and Alex Rupe have been married for nearly a decade, bringing together roots from Grand Forks, North Dakota and the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Shortly after their wedding, the couple relocated to Ottertail and quickly fell in love with the close-knit community. In 2020, Tyler purchased Battle Lake Refrigeration, Heating & Cooling, while Alex has built a career in marketing and event planning before recently becoming Executive Director of the Ottertail Community Center. Together with their two children and their beloved Labrador, Daisy, the Rupes have become integral members of the Ottertail community. They share a profound passion for community service and are dedicated to creating positive, lasting change that will benefit generations to come, working actively to strengthen the bonds that make their adopted hometown such a special place to live and raise a family.  In this episode, we cover: How a childcare crisis (and a joke!) sparked a community movement Why they chose the nonprofit route The “pod model” for childcare The role of collaboration and philanthropy Why a community center is next!  Links + Resources Mentioned: Website: https://www.ottertailcommunityproject.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ottertailcommunityproject Sponsor Spotlight: Brodie Mueller and The Market on the Plaza In small towns, coffee is more than caffeine. TCW Podcast Episode 243 - RCA Studio II   The RCA Studio II emerged from the company's faltering computer division and the vision of engineer Joseph Weisbecker, who had long dreamed of personal computing after reading "Giant Brains or Machines That Think". He developed FRED at home, a TTL-based hobby computer. A later iteration using the COSMAC microprocessor inspired his daughter Joyce, who went onto program Studio II games, and RCA's forays into coin-op experiments like the Fredotronic. With the development of the CMOS-based COSMAC chip, RCA built trainers like the MicroTutor and kits like the COSMAC ELF, but the Studio II became their entry into the console market. Innovative in concept but hampered by primitive graphics, the system faced FCC challenges delaying release. The console launched in 1977 against the Channel F and Atari VCS, it struggled to find success, though its technology lived on in Taiwan and European licensed systems. Much of its history was later uncovered by researcher Kevin Bunch, which saved the Studio II from being just a footnote in video game history.   Mechanical Televisions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5OANXk-6-w 32 Line Mechanical TCV Popeye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozpBDOBXiPs TCW 096 - Hello Big Blue: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/hello-big-blue/ TCW 026 - The Magnavox Odyssey: https://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-magnavox-odyssey/ RCA Spectra 70: https://d1yx3ys82bpsa0.cloudfront.net/brochures/rca.spectra70.1965.102646099.pdf Project Gutenberg - Giant Brains or Machines That Think: https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/68991/pg68991-images.html Radio Electronics - Simon Computer: https://vintagecomputer.net/simon.cfm Think-a-Dot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think-a-Dot RCA System 00 and FRED: https://www.retrotechnology.com/memship/cosmac_system_00.html Fredotronic: https://thehistoryofhowweplay.wordpress.com/2021/10/13/home-to-the-arcade-a-perfect-translation/ RCA MicroTutor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCXQZY8XCK8 Popular Electronics - COSNAC ELF: https://archive.org/details/197608PopularElectronics_20181123 Popular Electronics - COSMAC ELF (Condensed): https://archive.org/details/popular-electronics-cosmac-elf/page/n15/mode/2up Building a COSMAC ELF: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npvkHmTo_1U COSMAC VIP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDnufgeONYg (Atari Archive has examples of all games and many of the things we talk about!)
