"What happens when a small-town film festival starts drawing national attention—and a local tequila brand partners with a global giant?" In this vibrant episode of The JB and Sandy Show, the spotlight shines on two of Austin's favorite things: film and tequila. First up, Sandy and JB welcome Ray Perez, president of GTX Film, to talk about the Georgetown Film Festival—a one-day, all-access celebration of indie cinema happening this weekend. With over 20 filmmakers attending, free food and drinks, and a come-and-go format, it's shaping up to be the town's biggest cultural event of the year. Ray shares how the festival is growing thanks to local business support and a rising wave of Texas filmmaking momentum. “This could be our biggest year yet,” he says, noting the buzz from out-of-state filmmakers and the intimacy that makes Georgetown's event unique. Then, the conversation shifts from film to flavor as the guys break down a major local business move: Tito's Vodka is partnering with Lalo Tequila, one of Austin's rising spirits brands. Sandy calls it “an instant overnight success,” and the crew dives into the history of Tito's, the Austin alcohol boom, and why everyone in town seems to have their own tequila label now.

Kat Hantas is the co-founder of 21SEEDS Tequila, one of the fastest-growing flavored tequilas. She created 21SEEDS because it's what she wanted to drink – something smooth, simple, and casual with a fresh, natural flavor that made drinking infused tequila as approachable as a glass of wine. Before it was a brand, it was just a couple of bottles infused in her kitchen with things she had on hand. What began as one bottle turned into dozens… and eventually, a new beginning. She called her sister Nicole and our friend Sarika, and they started talking about the possibilities. They found a female-led distillery– a perfect fit. They worked on different infusions and got each recipe just right. They came up with a name. Two sisters and one friend: 21SEEDS was born. In today's episode, Nada talks with Kat about her journey as a co-founder in the spirits industry. After a conversation with her doctor, Kat set out to create a cleaner drink to replace her nightly glass of wine and then began making cocktails for her older friends and family who were experiencing similar side effects from drinking. Despite 21SEEDS quick success, Kat experienced several failed endeavors. She and Nada reflect on what success means, the importance of trying new things, and that age is an asset, not a liability.  To find out more about 21SEEDS, check out their website. So I am crowning it the new champion. We will see if one of the cocktails tonight can take the title. Tonight, we are enjoying:St Germain Cocktail. This is a simple drink to make. Put ice in a Collins glass, pour in 1½ oz. St Germain, 2 oz white or sparkling wine (we used Sauvignon Blanc), 2 oz. club soda. Stir and top with a lemon twist. That's it – you are done. Enjoy. Devils Margarita. This is for Tequila fans. Pour 1½ oz. Tequila Blanco, 1 oz. fresh lime juice, and ¾ oz. simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake until cold, then strain over ice in a rocks glass. Then float ½ oz. red wine by pouring slowly over the back of a bar spoon. Garnish with a lime wedge. We both loved the St. Germain Cocktail and rated it a 5 and a 4. We both liked the Devils Margarita and rated it a 3.Next week, we will have a Budget Wine Show and all three wines will be under $10. Join us and see if we can find a great wine for under $10.

There was sort of mini-boycott of agave syrup among bartenders about a decade ago, fueled by the industrial product contributing to Jalisco's monoculture of blue weber agave. Or maybe fueled by a feeling that agave should only be used to make spirits – I'm still not 100% clear on that. And then there was the rise of the “new” agave syrup, which is really the original agave syrup, which is made in an entirely pre-industrial manner, in places other than Jalisco, from agaves other than blue weber. And it's awesome! But it doesn't taste like the agave syrup bartenders expect. So … what do you do with it? And, for that matter, what do you do with Mezcal that doesn't taste like smokey Espadin and Tequila that doesn't taste like the stuff that thwarted you in college?Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Remember, good bourbon equals good friends and good times. Drink responsibly and don't drink and drive. Live your life uncut and unfiltered.Bourbon innovation meets tequila tradition in our exploration of Booker's Reserve 2025 – a groundbreaking release that takes Booker's barrels on an international journey before creating something truly spectacular. This unique expression began with Booker's 30th Anniversary barrels that traveled to Jalisco, Mexico, where the Camarena family used them to age El Tesoro tequila. When those same barrels returned to Kentucky, they carried rich agave notes that would transform a special batch of Booker's bourbon during a 2-3 month finishing period. The result? A first-ever finished Booker's that bridges Kentucky tradition with Mexican craftsmanship. Our tasting reveals a masterful balance of bourbon character and tequila influence. At 123.3 proof, this 8-year, 10-month bourbon delivers waves of caramel, vanilla, and baking spices complemented by subtle agave brightness. What's most remarkable is how approachable it remains despite its strength – the perfect fireside companion for winter evenings. The distinctive brown wax seal (rather than traditional black) visually connects this innovative expression to early Booker's releases.Freddie Noe has established the Reserve series as his playground while honoring his grandfather's experimental spirit. As Freddie notes, Booker "was never not exploring" and would eagerly share his tinkering with friends and family. This philosophy lives on in a bourbon that scored an impressive 17.5/18 on our rating scale, making it a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike.Whether you're a longtime Booker's fan or exploring premium bourbon for the first time, this release demonstrates how thoughtful barrel finishing can add fascinating dimensions to an already exceptional whiskey. On this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd turn their ears toward one of the most expressive instruments in music history: the saxophone. From Bob Seger's hauntingly beautiful “Turn The Page” to the iconic smoothness of Wham's “Careless Whisper,” the duo digs into the way the saxophone can transform a song into something timeless. They groove through the Rolling Stones' laid-back “Waiting On A Friend,” dance with Bowie's “Modern Love,” feel the epic storytelling in Springsteen's “Jungleland,” and toast with the classic party anthem “Tequila” by The Champs. The journey continues with Aretha Franklin's powerhouse hit “Respect,” the soulful yearning of INXS' “Never Tear Us Apart,” the rock ‘n' roll roots of Bill Haley's “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” and another Bowie gem, “Young Americans.”Check out the playlist on YouTube Music. In the second half of the show, Tim the Nerd reflects on the passing of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan. While acknowledging Hogan as the spark that first drew him into the world of wrestling, Tim candidly explores the complicated legacy Hogan leaves behind—both as a larger-than-life performer and as a deeply flawed man. He emphasizes the importance of being honest about public figures' lives, for better and worse, while also calling out the extremes of online criticism that turned into harassment of Hogan's loved ones. It's a thoughtful, music-filled episode blending appreciation for the power of the saxophone with a nuanced conversation about legacy, fandom, and the messy ways we talk about the people who shaped pop culture. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Rodrigo Medellin loves bats. The Mexican conservationist has been obsessed with the often maligned creatures for over six decades. As a child, he kept blood in ice cube trays in his parents' freezer, to feed to his pet vampire bats. He went on to create Mexico City's first ever bat festival, and to work with governments, universities, NGOs and researchers all over the world. To many, Rodrigo IS the "bat man."Like many Mexicans, he is also fiercely proud of the country's native spirits: tequila and mezcal. The agave spirits are hugely important for Mexico's economy, especially in the states of Jalisco and Oaxaca. Exports of the drinks are worth billions. Tequila and mezcal have become increasingly popular in recent decades, with sales boosted by big budget celebrity-owned brands designed to appeal to the US consumer. From Kendall Jenner to George Clooney, US celebrities have been riding high on the mass market appeal of the liquor. But the boom in these industries has had unintended consequences for Rodrigo's beloved bats. Often the agave the spirits are made from is harvested early, before the slow-growing plant can flower. This means bats cannot feed from the nectar, and critically, they can't do their job as pollinators. This contributes to agave monocultures which are susceptible to disease and blight. Rodrigo explains how he wanted to change the way the industry works, creating a “bat-friendly” certification for tequila and mezcal producers who leave 5% of the agave untouched, to bloom. But why have so few brands been certified, why is the programme controversial for some producers, and why are bats a tricky sell as far as conservation for many people and communities? Sarah Treanor spends time with Rodrigo in Mexico City and Oaxaca to find out. A Bespoken Media production. Image: Rodrigo Medellin holding a bat (Credit: Paul Webala)
