As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving season, it's the perfect time to reflect not only on gratitude—but also on the impact of our food choices. In this special replay of one of our most thought-provoking episodes, we explore the ethical, environmental, and deeply personal dimensions of veganism with Dr. Matthew Halteman, philosopher and author of Hungry Beautiful Animals.Dr. Halteman challenges the rigid, rule-bound approach to veganism and instead invites us into a more compassionate framework—one centered on flourishing for both humans and non-human animals. Through philosophical insight, personal reflection, and practical wisdom, he helps us reimagine veganism not as deprivation, but as a joyful, ethical commitment to a better world.Whether you're vegan, veg-curious, or simply seeking a more mindful approach to the holidays, this episode offers a powerful lens through which to consider how our plates reflect our values. In this episode, we explore:· The intersection of animal ethics, food systems, and personal health· Why flourishing—not perfection—should guide our food choices· How veganism can be a joyful, evolving journey rather than a rigid identity· The myths of scarcity and sacrifice in plant-based living· How small, intentional shifts can ripple into global changeListen on Apple, Spotify or your favorite listening platform; visit us on our YouTube channel Find everything "One More Thing" here: https://taplink.cc/beforeyougopodcastThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

Neither of us is a doctor, and you shouldn't take anecdotal evidence as proof of anything. I asked Perplexity.ai about the issue, and it said:There is evidence linking veganism and osteoporosis, though the relationship is nuanced and influenced by diet quality and nutritional adequacy.* Increased Risk with Poorly Planned Diets: Multiple extensive studies and systematic reviews have found that vegans—especially those consuming diets low in calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, protein, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids—tend to have lower bone mineral density (BMD) and an increased risk of both osteoporosis and bone fractures compared to omnivores. This elevated risk has been observed in major cohort studies, such as the EPIC-Oxford study, which reported a significantly higher risk of fractures among vegans even after adjusting for body mass index and lifestyle factors.* Nutritional Deficiencies Matter: The increased risk is primarily attributed to common deficits in key nutrients critical for bone health, such as calcium, vitamin D, and B12, which are less prevalent in plant-based foods unless supplemented or fortified. Protein intake is also sometimes lower in vegan regimens, which can further impact bone strength.* Well-Planned Vegan Diets & Positive Outcomes: Recent research shows that a “well-planned” vegan diet—emphasizing adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, B12, protein, and other bone-related nutrients (often through fortified foods or supplements)—does not significantly increase the risk of osteoporosis compared to omnivorous diets. Some studies have found that a healthful, plant-based diet may even reduce the risk of osteoporosis due to increased intakes of bone-protective nutrients like vitamin K, magnesium, and antioxidants, as well as because such diets tend to produce a lower acid load, which may reduce bone resorption.* Physical Activity Modifies the Risk: There is also evidence that resistance exercise (such as weightlifting or strength training) can improve bone strength in vegans, potentially offsetting some of the increased risk associated with plant-based diets.* Summary Table: Veganism and Osteoporosis RiskType of DietBone Health Risk FactorsOsteoporosis/Fracture Risk* Unbalanced vegan* Low calcium, D, B12, protein, zinc, omega-3s* Increased fracture/osteoporosis risk* Well-planned vegan* Supplemented/fortified nutrients, diverse plant foods* Similar risk as a balanced omnivorous diet or slightly reduced risk* Omnivorous* Generally, a higher intake of bone-critical nutrients* Standard baseline riskKey takeaways:* Vegans who do not carefully plan their diet are at higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures.* With mindful planning and supplementation, a vegan diet can support good bone health.* Ensuring sufficient calcium, vitamin D, B12, protein, and engaging in regular weight-bearing exercise are crucial for vegans to minimize their risk of osteoporosis.Sponsors1. It's an invitation to live in alignment with your values — and eat ridiculously good food while you're at it. We dig into why most people already want a more vegan world (even if they don't call themselves vegan yet), how to move from guilt and obligation to abundance and flourishing, cognitive dissonance (why people get defensive about veganism even when they agree with you), how to be an actually effective advocate without burning out or blowing up every family dinner, and much more. Matt also shares his own journey from meat lover to ethical vegan, how his dog Gus changed his worldview, and why he thinks veganism should feel like possibility, not pressure.

We discussed anarcho-punk and animal rights with our guest Pat, focusing on bands that influenced us and helped shape our political awareness. Pat is a friend to many at  3CR and formerly was a co-host of Roominations and Thursday Breakfast programs.  The punk subculture, particularly the anarcho-punk and straight edge movements, has maintained a strong association with animal rights activism since the 1980s. This link has manifested in punk music lyrics, benefit concerts, direct actions, and broader lifestyle choices such as veganism. Bands like Crass, Conflict, and Flux of Pink Indians (to name just a few influential bands of this period) helped pioneer this focus, using their music and influence to promote anti-speciesism, anti-war, and DIY ethics, especially within politically charged contexts like 1980s Britain.Within anarcho-punk communities, veganism often became the norm, with punks engaging in activism through grassroots organising, zines, and participation in groups like Food Not Bombs and hunt saboteur networks.  Despite not being universally adopted across punk, animal rights have played a foundational role in shaping anarcho-punk identity and continue to influence punk's ethical and political practices.   Bands and music we spoke about:   Crass https://crass.bandcamp.com/   Conflict https://conflictpunk.bandcamp.com   We discuss the song by Conflict - A Message to Who https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4J0kC9DQ9Q&list=RDu4J0kC9DQ9Q&start_radio=1  Discharge https://dischargeofficialmusic.bandcamp.com/album/war-is-hell  Music we played:  Crass: You're Already Dead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-jlqSzU5WY&list=RDx-jlqSzU5WY&start_radio=1 Discharge: War's No Fairytale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMCv_ygEnyU&list=RDSMCv_ygEnyU&start_radio=1 Discharge: Religion Instigates https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifDor77X8Cc&list=RDifDor77X8Cc&start_radio=1 Nausea: Clutches https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qouy91rckk4&list=RDQouy91rckk4&start_radio=1     Please note that for copyright reasons we cannot include the songs played on the show in the podcast. Some of their amazing A6 pamphlets that we recommend checking out are: Beasts of Burden:  https://www.activedistributionshop.org/product/beasts-of-burden-a6/  Beasts of Burden was first published in October 1999. The aim of the anonymous pamphlet was to initiate a debate between animal liberationists and revolutionaries – anarchists and communists (the author uses the term ‘communist' repeatedly and means communism in its original sense: a stateless and classless society where people live together and ‘the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all'. Animal Liberation and Social Revolution by Brian Dominick https://www.activedistributionshop.org/product/animal-liberation-and-social-revolution/  A Vegan Perspective on Anarchism, or an Anarchist Perspective on Veganism Written by Brian Dominick in 1995 – and introducing the term “Veganarchism” – this text sets out to demonstrate that any approach to social change must be comprised of an understanding not only of social relationships, but also of the relationships between humans and non-human animals. However, it also shows that, in turn, animal liberation itself will never be a feasible approach without understanding and participating in the wider social revolutionary endeavour.  From Animals to Anarchism by Kevin Watkinson & Donal O'Driscoll https://www.activedistributionshop.org/product/from-animals-to-anarchism/   From Animals to Anarchism challenges those involved in animal activism to sort their politics out if they truly believe in liberation, but at the same time does not let anarchists off the hook – demanding that they consider more fully the nature of human-animal relations in their politics.  Veganarchism: Against All Oppression, Everywhere, All the Time by Nathan Poirier https://www.activedistributionshop.org/product/from-animals-to-anarchism/ This book's central thesis is simple: Veganism and anarchism are, and should always be thought of as, the exact same thing. Not just similar, or almost synonyms, or parallet movements.   Check out the incredible range of A6 pamphlets and books from Active Distribution UK here: https://www.activedistributionshop.org/product-category/pamphlets-booklets/     A reminder about 3CR's Regular Donor Campaign: by becoming a regular donor, your ongoing support ensures that we are able to continue to provide a platform for community issues and airing independent radio without corporate sponsorpship or government funding. 3CR is determined to stay independent and serve our community, and we do rely on community support to keep going. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso start by talking about the biggest story in the restaurant industry — Taylor Swift's engagement to Travis Kelce, of course. Indeed, the news captured the attention of not just Swifties but also nearly every brand in America, as companies rushed to meme-ify the engagement or otherwise ride its coattails. Alicia shares why being part of the pop-culture conversation in this way is table stakes for restaurant marketers. Next they turn their attention to football, as college football and the NFL grab the attention of millions of Americans in the coming weeks. Countless restaurant chains are tapping into the power of football to promote their businesses, and Sam and Alicia discuss the potential that these partnerships bring operators — and why restaurants don't have to break the bank on a deal with a team or athlete. After a brief discussion on both new value deals — Chipotle offering a family bundle! — and new beverage innovation — McDonald's bringing CosMc's products to regular stores! — senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn joins for the extra serving, talking about Eleven Madison Park's decision to bring meat back to the menu and what it means for the future of veganism. Finally, we turn to an interview between managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Amie Kromis, VP of DEI at Essity. They talk about why hygiene is such an important part of the restaurant experience. For more on these stories: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement inspires restaurant promotionsWingstop partners with NFL's Cam Ward for meal dealEleven Madison Park is serving meat again — what that says about veganism

Is veganism a healthy lifestyle or social cult with nutritional gaps? Decades-long vegan Jessica Wynn weighs in on this Skeptical Sunday!Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by writer and researcher Jessica Wynn!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1203On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:There's a myth that it's impossible to properly nourish the human body on a vegan diet — but nutritional planning is crucial for optimizing one's health on any diet. B12 supplementation is essential for vegans, and iron absorption improves when paired with vitamin C. Done wrong, any diet can lead to deficiencies."Junk food veganism" defeats the health purpose of this lifestyle. Oreos and processed fake meats are technically vegan but nutritionally empty. Ultra-processed foods aren't healthy regardless of origin.Factory farming ethics drive many vegans. Animals experience pain, fear, and joy, yet ag-gag laws hide slaughterhouse conditions. Environmental impact includes massive water usage and pollution.True veganism extends beyond diet. Hidden animal products lurk in cosmetics (fish scales in mascara), clothing (leather), and processed foods. Reading labels becomes investigative work.Focus on whole foods regardless of diet. Shop the grocery store perimeter for fresh produce, minimize processed foods, and listen to your body's needs for optimal health and balance.Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. As a lifelong liberal and celebrated vegan chef, Mollie believed she was doing her part for the environment. But her journey from a Los Angeles restaurateur to a farmer on Sovereignty Ranch taught her that nature has its own truths. Mollie's new book, "Debunked by Nature," shares her story of confronting uncomfortable realities on the farm—realities that challenged her long-held beliefs about food, soil, and society. Her work in regenerative farming isn't just about cultivating healthy land; it's about building a resilient future. Through community stewardship, she demonstrates that true change comes from the ground up, not from the top down. This conversation will explore how Mollie's experiences have redefined her relationship with political activism, leading her to question partisanship and advocate for a "radical centrist" approach. We'll delve into how reconnecting with the earth can lead to a new understanding of our place in the world and a fresh perspective on what it means to create a more sovereign, resilient future for all. When most people think about saving the planet, they picture cutting back on meat and eating more plants. But what if the story we've been told about how plant-based diets equate to sustainability is missing half the truth (and hiding a massive environmental cost)? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I pull back the curtain on the industrial food system most people never see.  From the 90 billion honeybees trucked across the country each spring to pollinate almond trees to the 7.3 billion wild animals killed each year by harvest machinery, the data tells a very different story than the slogans. This isn't about pitting vegans against meat-eaters. It's about showing how industrial monoculture destroys soil, collapses insect populations, drains water tables, and kills countless small mammals and pollinators in the name of “clean” eating.  If you're ready to rethink food systems from the soil up, this episode is for you.

Regenerative farming pioneer Joel Salatin joins Dr. Jordan B. Peterson to challenge the myth that cows are bad for the planet. They explore how pasture-based farming restores ecosystems, the dangers of industrial agriculture, and why storytelling matters in the fight for the future of food. Joel Salatin, dubbed the "Lunatic Farmer," is a Christian libertarian environmentalist and one of the most outspoken voices in regenerative agriculture. Co-owner of Polyface Farm in Virginia, he supplies thousands with pasture-raised meats and teaches sustainable farming worldwide. With 16 books, such as “The Omnivore's Dilemma," countless columns, and a wildly engaging speaking style, Salatin blends mischief, grit, and deep cultural insight to challenge how we think about food, freedom, and stewardship of the land. This episode was filmed on March, 10th, 2025.  | Links | For Joel Salatin: On X https://x.com/joelsalatin?lang=en Polyface Farms website https://polyfacefarms.com/ Read “Homestead Tsunami: Good for Country, Critters, and Kids” https://a.co/d/5gg3vAV Read “You Can Farm: The Entrepreneur's Guide to Start & Succeed in a Farming Enterprise” https://a.co/d/fX8wSWF
