In this Healthy Mind, Healthy Life episode, host Avik sits down with licensed professional counselor and AACCT-certified sex therapist Daniel Fleshner, founder of Inflection Point Therapy, to cut through the hype around mental-health tech. From AI chatbots and teletherapy to outcome tracking and ethics, Daniel explains where digital tools genuinely improve access and results—and where they fall short for complex trauma, grief, and deep relational healing. If you're evaluating mental-health apps, online therapy platforms, or “AI therapy,” this conversation offers a direct, no-nonsense framework for safer, smarter decisions that actually support well-being. SEO: mental health technology, AI therapy, chatbots, teletherapy, therapy outcomes, data privacy, ethics, accessibility. About the guest : Daniel Fleshner is a licensed professional counselor, AACCT-certified sex therapist, and founder of Inflection Point Therapy. He works at the intersection of sex therapy, trauma-informed care, and health-system reform—advising startups, speaking for organizations, and advocating for ethical, evidence-informed use of technology in mental health. Key takeaways: Access vs. outcomes: Tech can widen access (e.g., teletherapy) and improve outcomes, but effect sizes in traditional therapy show clear room to grow—use tools that complement, not replace, therapy. Right tool, right job: Chatbots can aid decision-making and concrete problem-solving. For complex trauma, grief, and deep attachment work, prioritize a trained human therapist. Evaluate apps pragmatically: Look for transparent data privacy, risk management, clinical input, and honest claims about scope. Be wary of “one-stop AI therapist” marketing. Adjunct, not substitute: If you use an app, pair it with therapy and use it between sessions for journaling, skills practice, and accountability. Ethics matters: Intentions behind products matter. Some builders are profit-first; others are well-meaning but lack a clinical lens—both can miss safety and quality. Healthy expectations: Therapy isn't a magic bullet or a sham. It's a structured process that still requires hard work, realistic goals, and time. Ideal partnership: Put clinicians at the table (leadership, equity) to bridge therapy, business, and tech—then build tools that support real-world therapeutic work. Personal action: Define what you actually need (support, skills, human connection) before choosing any platform or app. How to connect with the guest Substack: The Disrupted Therapist Website: inflectionPointTherapy.com (contact form reaches Daniel directly) Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Recently, the new embryo-selection start-up Herasight has been in the news, finally coming out of stealth. Part of the buzz is because of the public involvement of well-known geneticists and academics like Alex Young and Joe Pickrell in Herasight's algorithm development. Additionally, Noor Siddiqi, the CEO of Orchid, a competitor to Herasight (and onetime advertiser on this podcast), was a guest on Ross Douthat's show Interesting Times, triggering another round of conversations around embryo-selection, including in The Wall Street Journal and Breaking Points. To hash out some opposing viewpoints, Unsupervised Learning decided to bring on two guests that stake out very different positions, Dr. James Lee, a psychometrician and behavior geneticist at the University of Minnesota, and Dr. Jonathan Anomaly, a philosopher and Herasight's sales lead. Lee has been on the record with his skepticism of reproductive technology, writing an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal four years ago warning against the consequences of polygenic embryo selection. Meanwhile, Anomaly's last book was Creating Future People: The Science and Ethics of Genetic Enhancement, where he advances the idea that such technologies will unlock human potential.

Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 474. “Where The Common Law Goes Wrong,” 2025 Annual Meeting, Property and Freedom Society, Bodrum, Turkey (Sep. 19, 2025). This will also be podcast later on the Property and Freedom Podcast. Below are my notes, Shownotes provided by Grok, and the transcript. This recording is from my iphone. Professional recording and video will be uploaded later. See also Sebastian Wang, "Stephan Kinsella on the Common Law: Lessons from Bodrum 2025," Libertarian Alliance [UK] Blog (Sep. 19, 2025). Grok Shownotes Show Notes: Stephan Kinsella's “Where the Common Law Goes Wrong” – Property and Freedom Society 2025 Annual Meeting Introduction and Context Stephan Kinsella delivered his talk, “Where the Common Law Goes Wrong,” at the Property and Freedom Society's 2025 Annual Meeting in Bodrum, Turkey, on September 21, 2025. Introduced by Hans-Hermann Hoppe, who shared a brief anecdote about media bias in translating Donald Trump's interactions, Kinsella's presentation revisits themes from his earlier PFS talks in 2012 and 2021, focusing on the interplay between libertarian principles, Roman law, and the common law. Drawing on his recent work, including the Universal Principles of Liberty (co-authored with Alessandro Fusillo, David Dürr, FreeMax, and Patrick Tinsley, under Hoppe's guidance), Kinsella emphasizes the organic development of law and critiques the modern tendency to equate law with legislation. He humorously recounts preparing for the talk with his trainer, who mistook “common law” for “common law marriage,” highlighting the need to clarify legal concepts for a broader audience. Defining Law and Its Evolution Kinsella begins by distinguishing types of law: descriptive (e.g., laws of physics, economics) and normative (e.g., moral codes, legal systems). Legal laws, he argues, blend normative guidance with descriptive consequences, aiming to achieve justice through property rights. He contrasts the modern view of law as statutory decrees—illustrated by tax protesters demanding to “show me the law”—with its historical roots in decentralized systems like Roman law (500 BC–565 AD) and English common law (1066–present). These systems evolved organically through court decisions, with Roman law preserved in Justinian's Corpus Juris Civilis and later rediscovered in Bologna around 1070, influencing European civil codes. Kinsella notes that post-1789 democratic shifts and bureaucratic growth led to an explosion of legislation, overshadowing these private law traditions. Roman Law vs. Common Law The talk explores why Anglo-American scholars, like Hayek and Leoni, often praise the common law's spontaneous order while overlooking Roman law's similar decentralized origins. Kinsella cites Hoppe's observation, from Democracy: The God That Failed, that the common law's non-codified nature may serve lawyers' interests by making it less accessible to laypeople, unlike Europe's clearer civil codes. He refutes the misconception that civil law systems inherently embody totalitarian principles (“all that is not permitted is forbidden”), attributing Europe's socialism to separate legislation, not civil codes. Both Roman and common law, Kinsella argues, offer valuable insights for libertarians, despite the former's neglect in free-market scholarship. Libertarian Law and Rationalism Critique Kinsella critiques the rationalistic tendency among libertarians to design top-down “libertarian law codes,” as exemplified by Rothbard's hope for a comprehensive code in The Ethics of Liberty. Such approaches, he argues, ignore context and the limits of deductive reasoning, echoing Hayek's critique of constructivist rationalism. Law, as a practical response to scarcity and conflict, developed through real-world judicial decisions over centuries. Kinsella suggests that libertarian law should evolve organically, using Roman and common law as starting points, guided by principles like non-aggression but subject to scrutiny f...
The recent assassination of Charlie Kirk has forced every Christian to confront a sobering question: How do we live faithfully when the culture grows hostile to truth? On this week’s episode of The Narrative, Dr. Andrew Walker joins CCV's Aaron Baer, David Mahan, and Mike Andrews for a candid conversation about Christian ethics in a world that seems determined to abandon them. Dr. Walker doesn’t offer easy answers. Instead, he lays out a framework for courage, clarity, and conviction rooted in Scripture — the kind of framework believers desperately need in moments like this. Before they sit down with Dr. Walker, Aaron and Mike run through this week's news: ✨ One week from today, on Friday, September 26, Allie Beth Stuckey and Pastor Luke Barnett, both friends of Charlie Kirk, will join us for our Cleveland Celebration Gala to honor the life, legacy, and mission of Charlie. ⭐️ CCV's Essential Summit is just around the corner on Thursday, October 2. Featured keynote Willie Robertson shared a special video for Summit attendees.
This week, we're joined by scholar, editor, and philosopher, Robin James, to talk about her provocative recent essay entitled “We're through being Cool: Tech Bros, Manosphere Influencers, Ancient Greek Masculinity, and AI,” posted at James' blog, It's Her Factory. When we think about "cool," we think about effortless, confident, style... but being cool has always been about more than style. It's about resistance to authority, overcoming patriarchy, refusal to fit in. Yet, a cohort of manosphere influencers have recently been rejecting "cool" as a way of affirming their masculinity. What happens when "bro culture" asserts old forms of masculinity as new forms of mastery, which then get linked with AI hype, making "cool," well, no longer cool. If cool is dead, maybe what comes next is something much colder.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/death-of-cool---------------------SUBSCRIBE to the podcast now to automatically download new episodes when Season 14 begins in September!SUPPORT Hotel Bar Podcast on Patreon here! Recently when talking to my freshman class about time management strategies, part of me started to feel sorry for them knowing that the challenge of time management only gets harder and not easier. I'm sure it feels overwhelming to have so many classes, social activities, for some sports obligations, joining clubs, and even hopefully sleep. There is a lot to balance, and achieving that balance seems like a never-ending struggle. And of course that only gets worse. Add in children, household chores, more demanding jobs, maintaining relationships, bills, exercise, and any number of other commitments, having that balance can feel pretty impossible. I'm always trying to balance the things that I am supposed to do, the things that I want to do, and the things that I have avoided doing but still think about. I know I'm not alone in this struggle, as most people feel that their lives are out of balance, or at least the kind of balance that they would like to have. Leadership also requires a lot of balance not only for yourself, but for those for whom you are responsible. Leaders are supposed to be decisive and show direction. At the same time, modern leadership also requires giving people agency and autonomy, leaving room for others to help decide how the group moves forward. There is the balancing of stakeholder perspectives in an ever-widening circle that goes beyond customers and employees to communities and even society. If an agency is involved, then there is the issue of balancing the desires of clients with your own insights and expertise. My guest today on Experience by Design knows quite a bit about these balancing acts. Livia Bernardini has spent her life trying to balance different cultures. Born and raised in Italy, then moving to Paris, Australia, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and now England. Her own personal challenges led to find balance through artistic endeavors such as painting, drawing, and sewing. Today she is the CEO of the agency Future Platforms, an agency that helps clients transform their businesses through digital products and experiences. Their clients include Domino's, Liv Golf, Ralph Lauren, the Premier League, PSG, and many others. We talk about the balancing act that she experiences as a CEO, speaker, moderator, and author. She describes her philosophy of “pragmatic progress” to evaluate her success in balancing. In her work, Liv discusses balancing the potential of emergent technology like AI with its inherent limitations as well. LIv's degree in Communication and Media Studies as well as Marketing gives her a deep insight into culture today, especially how the digital environment of social media is shaping our perceptions of the world. While much can be accomplished through the digital tools we have available to us, not all of it is good. As a result, we have to prioritize people, then planet, and finally profit. Finally, we explore the balancing of client requests with the insights that your team might have. Ultimately, to achieve balance in experience design, we need to look at the entire experience ecosystem, including the contexts and stakeholders that are present in it. When doing so, we need to think in terms of ethical and sustainable solutions that create better outcomes for those involved in that ecosystem. Ever since modern economic growth began three centuries ago, people have suffered from periodic bursts of anxiety about the technologies of the time taking on the work that they do. This opening lecture explores the history of ‘automation anxiety' – from the Luddites who smashed framing machines at the start of the Industrial Revolution in Britain to the protestors who set driverless cars on fire on the streets of San Francisco today. Time and again, their main worry – that there would not be enough work for people to do – turned out to be wrong. But they did have legitimate grievances as well. This lecture was recorded by Daniel Susskind on the 9th of September 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonDr Daniel Susskind is a writer and economist. He explores the impact of technology, and particularly AI, on work and society. From marriage formation to fertility decisions and divorce trends, he explains how inflation fosters short-termism, debt culture, and moral hazard within households.Join Jeff Degner and other Mises faculty on November 1st for our first student-only event at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. By Adam Turteltaub What do cupcakes, cookies and compliance training have in common? More than you might think, reports Barbara-Ann Boehler, Senior Director of the Program on Corporate Compliance and Ethics at Fordham University School of Law. She successfully used the act of frosting the treats a part of a compliance learning exercise. It's a great, if unusual, example of experiential learning, which seeks to teach people by getting the learner to do the thing that they are learning rather than just sitting and listening. A more common example of experiential learning is to create a case study in which the participants play different roles and see how the situation plays out. This interactive approach to learning can be much stickier, figuratively and literally (if you use frosting) with lessons sinking in deeper and discussions lasting long after the session is over. Listen in to learn more but, maybe, eat something healthy first.

In this episode, Stephanie speaks with Sandeep Kumar, an Indian entrepreneur who transformed his family's traditional silk business into a cruelty-free vegan silk brand. Guided by his Jain values of non-violence, Sandeep closed all contracts with silk weavers in 2018 and launched a store offering plant-based and artificial silk alternatives, later expanding into natural dyes and sustainable techniques.Despite criticism and early challenges, his business now serves customers worldwide, earning PETA and Beauty Without Cruelty certifications. Sandeep shares his mission to educate consumers, challenge industry myths like “peace silk,” and inspire entrepreneurs to prioritize ethics, sustainability, and transparency over short-term profit. This is a powerful, must-hear story for every vegan entrepreneur who has faced significant challenges.Quote:So my message to all the entrepreneurs is that yes, we need profits to run our business, you know, for our livelihood. But we should make sure that we take care of the ecosystem, both the environment and other living beings, as well as the fellow human beings who deserve a better life. -- M. SandipkumarShow Notes:

Breaking News! #teamgwic was at the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) annual Ethics & Compliance Institute in Nashville and is here to give you an update on our experience. Ellen, Lisa, and Hemma all caught up mid-conference to interview each other about their panels and also what people were talking about outside the presentations. We had the chance to recap on our earlier panels: Ellen about how to train leaders to hear and act on bad news in a way to improve our programs; Hemma speaking about how to move your program from a risk-avoidant program to a forward-thinking ethics and compliance program, which is ultimately a competitive advantage, and Lisa's panel which discussed data analytics for humans – intended to be a practical discussion of what data analytics are and how we are all analyzing data. At the end, we were able to bring in a surprise guest – the one and only Adam Turteltaub, SCCE's Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer. He provided highlights of the conference so far and updates about SCCE's new CEO, Garth Jordan. Sarah was unable to join the recording, but all would agree that CEI left us with new ideas, new friends, and the chance to catch up with this great community.

In this preview of our paid subscriber bonus episode, we're diving deeper into The Canterbury Tales. Imagine Love Island but it's 1390, everyone's going on a religious road trip, and instead of coupling up, they're having a storytelling competition. That's The Canterbury Tales. Join us as we go a little deeper into Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, exploring how this 14th-century masterpiece was the original "common people's literature" and why these 600-year-old stories feel surprisingly modern. Spoiler alert: there's a lot more butt-kissing and fart jokes than you'd expect from "classic literature” or Taylor Swift songs. Moody, a distinguished professor and author, about his journey into activism in climate change, and the concept of legacy. Moody is a graduate of Yale University and received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University. He has taught philosophy at Columbia University, Hunter College, New York University, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is the retired Vice President and Director of Academic Affairs for AARP in Washington, DC. He is currently Visiting Professor at Tohoku University in Japan, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Fielding Graduate University's Creativity and Wisdom Program.Dr. Moody previously served as Executive Director of theBrookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College and Chairman of the Board of Elderhostel (now Road Scholar). Moody is the author of over 100 scholarly articles, as well as a number of books including: Abundance of Life: Human Development Policies for an Aging Society (Columbia University Press, 1988) and Ethics in an Aging Society (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1992).His most recent book, Climate Change in an Aging Society,is the first book fully devoted to the impact of climate change on those who are old today―and those who will be old in decades to come. He is the editor of the Climate Change in an Aging Society and Human Values in Aging newsletters. In 2011 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society on Aging and in 2008 he was named by Utne Reader Magazine as one of “50 Visionaries Who AreChanging Your World.”Key TakeawaysDr. Moody encourages action and hope, emphasizing that change requires collective effort.Hope is not the expectation of a better future but thebelief in doing what's right. “Hope is a verb with sleeves rolled up.” - David Orr, environmental educator and author. The concepts of aging and climate change are both perfect candidates for denial. We can overcome denial by facing up to things and doing what's possible. The “Four Horseman of the Climate Apocalypse” defined in Climate Change for an Aging Society are fire, flood, drought and heat wave.A Life Review asks, what have you done in your life isworth remembering, that is worth sharing with younger generations? Lasting change happens when generations come together. Older adults pass on their knowledge, wisdom, and experience to younger people. Theproblem with elders communicating with young people can be that elders think they know it all. One of the major challenges in religious freedom law is figuring out to what extent a claim of accommodation is justified given the low barrier of entry for claims of sincerity. While American law tries to prevent a man from becoming what Justice Scalia in Smith called “a law unto himself,” something of the sort is happening when a person claims that his faith prevents him from following the normal course of obedience. My conversation today helps illuminate some of this in a profound way, specifically looking at Soren Kierkegaard's ethical system and considering its corollary in the rule of law. My guest is Joshua Neoh, a senior lecturer in law at the Australian National University (ANU), Australia. He has an LLB, LLM and PhD from the ANU, Yale and Cambridge, respectively. Full bio. His paper at the heart of this conversation is called Kierkegaardian Ethics and the Rule of Law, available here. Cross & Gavel is a production of CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY. The episode was produced by Josh Deng, with music from Vexento.
