Most people try to “heal” their brain with supplements, mindset, or meditation—but this episode reveals the deeper protocol to actually grow a new brain, reverse stress damage, activate 1,100 healing genes, and unlock higher human performance at any age. You'll learn how neuroplasticity, mitochondria repair, plant-based NRF2 activators, and energetic practices work together to rebuild the brain and extend longevity. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D.—medical anthropologist, neuroscientist, energy medicine pioneer, and founder of The Four Winds Society, the gold-standard school for modern shamans. He has spent 25+ years studying Amazonian and Andean healing traditions, led the Biological Self-Regulation Lab at San Francisco State University to explore psychosomatic medicine, and authored more than 25 bestselling books on neuroscience, functional medicine, and energy healing. Few people on earth bridge ancient biohacking and modern brain science at this level. He also reveals the forms of nicotine that are safest (spoiler: it's not vapes or cigarettes), how nicotine works at the receptor level, and what the science says about long-term health effects. This episode blends functional medicine, brain optimization, and biohacking into one powerful, myth-busting breakdown. You'll learn: • How to grow a new brain every 22 days using neuroplasticity and mitochondria support • Why plant medicines and NRF2 activators can turn on 1,100 healing genes in 24 hours • The surprising link between nootropics, psychedelics, serotonin, and endogenous DMT • How mindset, belief systems, and placebo/nocebo shape immune function and metabolism • Why RFK's chronic disease warning connects to viral evolution and immune collapse • The real reason carnivore diets work—and when they fail without gut repair • Peptides, GLP-1 agonists, and the future of functional medicine hacking • Why most people sabotage themselves and how to stop fighting your own biology This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, human performance, and longevity, and for those who want to understand how functional biology and mitochondrial science are redefining recovery, energy, and aging. Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade brings you the knowledge to take control of your biology, extend your longevity, and optimize every system in your body and mind. Each episode delivers cutting-edge insights in health, performance, neuroscience, supplements, nutrition, biohacking, emotional intelligence, and conscious living. Renowned negotiation strategist Dr. Keld Jensen—ranked among the top three negotiation experts globally and author of 27 books, including the upcoming "The Smart Negotiator" joins me on the show to shine a spotlight on the powerful link between physical fitness and professional sales performance. As someone who spends more than 200 days a year on the road advising governments and Fortune 500 companies, Keld brings invaluable personal insights on how exercise, nutrition, sleep, and even fasting keep him sharp, resilient, and creative—no matter the demands of travel or high-stakes negotiations. Tune in as Keld shares his favorite fitness routines, strategies for managing stress and avoiding burnout, and his top dos and don'ts for thriving in a demanding sales career. Whether you're a sales veteran or just starting out, you'll walk away with actionable tips on fueling your professional success through better physical and mental well-being. Outline of This Episode [00:00] Top fitness practices for enhancing performance, especially while traveling. [03:39] Fasting a few times a year cleanses the body and clears the mind. [09:19] Irregular schedules can lead to poor diets. [11:59] Prioritize sleep, daily exercise, nutritious food, and avoid glorifying busyness at the cost of well-being. [14:36] Daily exercise for energy and focus. How Physical Fitness Drives Performance in Professional Selling It's easy to picture a successful salesperson as someone who masters negotiation, builds relationships, and closes deals. But as Keld Jensen points out, there's an often-ignored, vital ingredient behind many of these successes: physical fitness. Fitness sharpens both body and mind, building resilience, enhancing mental agility, and helping professionals process complex information and stress with greater clarity. Self-discipline is a core value shared across high achievers; the discipline required to maintain a fitness routine often mirrors the rigor necessary for sales success. Whether in the gym or at the negotiation table, consistency and commitment make the difference. Managing Energy on the Road For sales professionals, travel is a way of life—but it comes with its own set of health challenges. Keld, who spent 211 days away from home last year alone, shares firsthand how difficult it can be to maintain healthy habits amidst jet lag, poor food choices, and long hours. To combat this, he relies on simple yet effective routines: regular exercise (favoring running for its minimal equipment), practicing intermittent fasting for mental clarity, and using conscious breathing exercises to lower stress. Keld recommends fasting with fruit and tea for at least three to five days twice a year, especially before major creative projects. This practice, he claims, not only cleanses the body but also dramatically improves mental sharpness—a critical asset for anyone in high-stakes sales or negotiation. Building Daily Fitness Habits Even amidst relentless travel, Keld commits to running three miles each morning—a habit chosen for its practicality and positive impact. “It becomes the essential part of my day,” he notes, stressing the importance of movement, even if just a walk or a stretch, to break up long periods of inactivity. His second key practice is taking “micro breaks” during work: stretching, walking, and resetting posture to help reset energy and counteract jet lag. Lastly, he emphasizes the protective power of sleep—something sales professionals often overlook. Protecting sleep is the most important thing, as structured, sufficient rest equals sharper performance. Turning Exercise Into a Competitive Advantage Physical health is more than a “nice-to-have.” It's central to managing stress, maintaining motivation, sustaining high performance, and making rational decisions. Keld likens the effects of accumulated stress to “unbalanced concessions in a deal”—if left unchecked, both can lead to collapse. Treat fitness as your personal balancing tool. On days when he skips his morning workout, Keld finds himself more stressed and less effective. Simply put: you can't negotiate—or sell—well if you're running on empty. Strategies for Overcoming Lifestyle Challenges Salespeople face real hurdles: long hours, irregular schedules, poor diet, and the ever-present pressure to perform. Keld admits he once survived on coffee alone, only to realize—painfully—the limits of youth and the importance of real nutrition. His advice is that you shouldn't gon't glorify busyness at the cost of wellbeing. Instead, establish recovery rituals (think: movement, hydration, short walks, and the occasional gentle detox) and listen carefully for signs of burnout, such as a short temper, poor decision-making, and dwindling concentration. Practical Do's and Don'ts for Sales Professionals Keld closes with actionable wisdom: Do: Prioritize sleep—defend it fiercely. Move daily, beyond the basics of commuting. Fuel your body with nutritious food. Don'ts: Don't put business above your health. Don't rely on caffeine as your primary energy source. Don't wait for burnout before making a change. Planning for fitness pays off, even on the road. Whether it's choosing a hotel with a gym or a local swimming pool, carving out time for your routine keeps you energized and at your best, wherever work takes you. If you're in sales, your most critical asset isn't just your pitch—it's your energy. As Keld Jensen's wisdom reveals, investing in your health is investing in your results. Don't wait for burnout. Start fueling your performance with the discipline, routines, and recovery practices that keep you sharp, resilient, and ready to win. This groundbreaking episode unveils Stanford Professor Michael Snyder's revolutionary research published in Nature Biomedical Engineering revealing that type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance aren't single diseases but four distinct metabolic subtypes requiring personalized fasting and nutrition strategies. The hosts decode how muscle insulin resistance demands early time-restricted eating with 18:6 or OMAD plus resistance training, beta cell dysfunction requires gentle 16:8 fasting while avoiding extended fasts to prevent pancreatic burnout, impaired incretin effect needs pre-meal walking with fermented foods to enhance gut hormone signaling, and liver glucose dysregulation necessitates 30-36 hour fasts weekly to reset hepatic insulin resistance and stop the liver's continuous glucose output. Dr. Scott and Tommy explain why A1C measurements provide almost no insight into underlying mechanisms, with individuals showing normal A1C yet severe insulin resistance while others display pre-diabetic A1C with preserved insulin sensitivity, making traditional one-size-fits-all weight loss recommendations fundamentally flawed. The episode introduces at-home oral glucose tolerance testing to decode personal glucose curves and identify specific pathology, while emphasizing foundational recommendations—early meals, resistance training, post-meal walks, protein prioritization, sleep protection, and stress management—move the needle for most people regardless of subtype, with personalized optimization becoming critical for those stuck despite consistent effort. Episode #227 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: 1. Can people tweak the 5:2 diet with the two non-consecutive restricted calorie days as full fast days (water only) and reap the same if not better results, or must food in the form of nutrient dense and low calorie be consumed? [09:21] 2. I have seen videos of Dr Fung endorsing the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD). Does he, Dr Fung advocate it for T2D? I am asking because of the plant based (carb) items in the kit, like the soups, crackers, and bars and the potential spike in insulin and glucose consuming those items? [14:30] 3. While an individualized approach to managing and/or reversing diabetes is best, from a diet perspective, is it generally better to have a diverse diet and manage diabetes with medication if needed, rather than restricting your diet to avoid medication? [18:55] 4. Can one - or more importantly should one - practice OMAD to reverse IR or T2D? Is there a nutritional concern here? Is the length of time that you do OMAD a factor? [21:12] 5. Do I have to leave the weights workout for the last day of prolonged fasting and eat after the workout or can I work out with weights every day during a 5-day fast without problem and continue fasting AFTER the heavy weights workout? [27:01] 6. Is long term ketosis bad for the body? Some doctors are saying it is and you should carb cycle, but are there any studies supporting this? Daniel's Prayer Was “seeking him {God} by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting . . . ‘O Lord, the great and awesome God . . . we have sinned and done wrong'” MESSAGE SUMMARY: There are times when you need clarity, understanding, knowledge and insights from God about the specific issues that you, your family, your church, or your country are facing. In your personal relationship with God as a Jesus Follower, the Lord will speak to you; but sometimes it takes your listening and fasting to hear Him. For example, when Joel received a Word when the land was to be destroyed, he called a fast (i.e. Joel 1:14): “Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.”. Some things you are facing in your life must be dealt with by both prayer and fasting. Fasting releases a spiritual power – in your weakness, God is made strong in your life. Daniel's prayer, from Daniel 9:3-5, provides a context for asking direction from God: “Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, ‘O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.'". TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Thank you that there is nothing I can do to earn your love; it comes without any strings attached. As I close my eyes for these few minutes before you, all I can say is, thank you! In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 133). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Joel 1:13-16; Matthew 6:16; Daniel 9:3-7; Psalms138:1-8. Rhythms of Feasting and Fasting - Father Trevor McMaken by
In this powerful sermon, we dive into the timeless truths found in Matthew 6 and Mark 9 to rediscover the spiritual disciplines of prayer and fasting. Jesus didn't just teach these practices—He modeled them, and He expects His followers to do the same.In Matthew 6:16–18, Jesus teaches us how to fast—not for show, but for spiritual breakthrough and deeper intimacy with God.In Mark 9:14–29, we witness a dramatic moment where the disciples struggle to cast out a demon—and Jesus makes it clear: "This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting."This message is a call to return to the basics of kingdom power. If you're facing spiritual battles, unanswered prayers, or feel stuck in your faith—this word is for you.Prayer and fasting still works—because God still works.
For sixteen months, the Prophet ﷺ and his companions prayed toward Jerusalem. Then, in the middle of Rajab, everything changed. But what happened when the revelation came down during Asr prayer? And what about those companions praying miles away in Masjid Quba who had no idea the Qibla had just shifted? In this episode of the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan takes us through one of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history: the day the Muslim Ummah turned toward the Kaaba.Discover the dramatic scene of companions mid-prayer, the single messenger who changed everything, and the Jews of Medina who called the Muslims "dimwitted" for this divine command. But that's not all. Why did the Prophet ﷺ long to face the Kaaba while still honouring Jerusalem? What hidden fiqh rulings emerged from this single event? And how does the fasting of Ashura connect to this momentous occasion? The stage is now set for the greatest battle in Islamic history: a battle where Allah Himself promised forgiveness to its participants. In this Fitness Friday episode on the Habits and Hustle podcast, Sal Di Stefano joins me to break down the science of blood sugar control, why intermittent fasting is "a terrible way to lose weight," and the shocking truth about cardio versus strength training for fat loss. We also unpack the biggest mistake women make when tracking progress: obsessing over the scale instead of body composition. Sal explains why 40% of weight lost through cardio comes from muscle, shares a study where strength training alone beat cardio AND strength training combined for fat loss, and reveals why psychologists now prescribe high-protein breakfasts to anxious patients. Hi and welcome to How Humans Heal. I'm Dr. Doni Wilson, and in today's episode, I'm looking forward to introducing you to Nagina Abdullah. She's a weight loss coach for women in midlife and founder of the website MasalaBody.com. She helps women improve and boost their metabolism naturally. This is important because so many women have questions around metabolism and body weight, especially in midlife. I first met Nagina in a hot tub at a conference. It was like friends at first sight. We discovered that we both have backgrounds in science. I studied science for my bachelor's degree as well, so I totally get her background of studying cell biology and biochemistry. She took that science background and found ways to translate the science of the body to help women with their weight and metabolism. I'm so grateful for Nagina sharing all this with us as a starting point so you can start experimenting with these tips. We know there are so many reasons to be at a healthy weight. Part is how we feel, but at a healthier weight, we're preventing other health issues. We'll prevent cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. It's a lifestyle of eating in a way that helps us feel good in our body today and in our clothes but also helps our health going forward. We're here to help you! This listener Q&A episode tackles the most common fasting challenges with evidence-based solutions, addressing Monica's self-sabotage pattern after reaching new low weights by explaining the body's three-pronged defense system (defend phase preventing further loss, restore phase increasing regain rate, and prevent phase reducing future weight loss probability) that creates powerful physiological resistance requiring equally comprehensive counter-strategies. The hosts reveal how metabolic adaptation activates during weight loss like a toddler throwing a tantrum, making the body fight harder at new weight thresholds, while providing practical "when-then planning" to manage the slippery slope of increased hunger and reduced willpower that emerges from dopamine deficits caused by sleep disruption and stress. They address Emily's two-week plateau after losing seven pounds initially with 20:4 fasting, explaining the critical distinction between water weight loss from glycogen depletion versus true fat loss, recommending the Blueprint to Fasting for Fat Loss resource and strategic window timing adjustments to restart momentum. Patty's wine consumption question during OMAD receives honest analysis of alcohol's metabolic priority over fat burning, sleep disruption effects reducing next-day metabolic efficiency, and dose-dependent impact on hormones especially for postmenopausal women, with recommendations to shift from daily to occasional consumption strategically timed for better recovery. The episode covers supplement timing during fasting windows (berberine, creatine recommended daily for consistency despite potential stomach sensitivity), addresses sleep disturbances from excessive 48-hour fasting during maintenance (recommending 24-36 hour alternatives to protect sleep quality over marginal metabolic gains), and explains post-meal walking benefits for glucose management through skeletal muscle uptake and improved insulin sensitivity, even when continuous glucose monitors show delayed rather than reduced spikes. Throughout, Scott and Tommy emphasize viewing fat loss and maintenance as a continuum rather than separate phases, building sustainable habits during weight loss that seamlessly transition to lifelong maintenance, positioning their upcoming pre-Thanksgiving seven-day challenge as strategically timed to establish momentum before the holiday season while reinforcing that successful fasting integration requires addressing foundational lifestyle factors of stress, sleep, food relationships, and mindset alongside fasting schedules. In this special edition episode, I sat down with my long time, old friend, Mayhem. Mayhem and I became boys back in highschool and although we have been busy with the roads that life has took us down, it was great to chat and catch up. Mayhem is a comedian, formerly working on the old, but famous, Opie and Anthony show. In this episode, we hit such a wide range of topics, including Mayhem's experience with fasting and fitness, as someone that has been overweight his entire life, to various conspiracies and chasing after your dream and what it takes to achieve that dream. This is a long one, but a great one! Enjoy!
