Recently, we've been reflecting a lot on Is There Free Will? and also How To Really Worship Kālī | Free Will vs Determinism to explain Sri Ramakrishna's very subtle position on the issue: God alone is the Doer ("not even a leaf moves but by the will of God") and yet there arises in us by God's will the "feeling" of free will which makes our decisions meaningful! But ultimately, we realize (a) God only has been doing everything and playing all the roles (absolute determinism on the level of the individual) but also(b) you are God (absolute free-will and voluntarism on the level of the true identity) But while the "free will vs determinism" discussion is a supremely important theme in our personal spiritual lives, another equally important and very related theme is that of "self-effort vs grace"! In this talk, we explain why(a) grace is the only factor in spiritual life and (b) grace can never be caused by anything since that would contradict God's freedom of which grace is an expression and yet (c) we should still do intense spiritual practices anyway since c.i. the very fact that we want to do spiritual practices (and that we have a guru to show us how) is itself a function of grace andc.ii. spiritual practices are worth doing in and of themselves, just for fun and without any desire for outcome! Of course, since we gave this talk as part of our Paramārthasāra of Abhinava Gupta series (which meets on zoom every Friday at 11am PST via the house link here), we use three verses from our text to substantiate our claims on grace:आदर्शे मलरहिते यद्वद्वदनं विभाति तद्वदयम्।शिवशक्तिपातविमले धीतत्त्वे भाति भारूपः॥९॥Just like a face shines in a mirror free of impurities, exactly like this, this Shining One (śiva/Self) shines resplendently in that intellect which has been made spotless by Lord Shiva's grace.परमं यत् स्वातन्त्र्यं दुर्घटसम्पादनं महेशस्य।देवी मायाशक्तिः स्वात्मावरणं शिवस्यैतत्॥१५॥The Goddess Māyāśakti is the Supreme Freedom of the Great Lord to accomplish (sampādanam) that which is impossible/inconceivable (durghata): the covering (āvarana) of his very own self (svātma).एकस्मिन्घटगगने रजसा व्याप्ते भवन्ति नान्यानि।मलिनानि तद्वदेते जीवाः सुखदुःखभेदजुषः॥३७॥If the space within one pot is filled with dust, the space within other pots is not stained. Just like that are these individual beings who experience the duality of pleasure and pain/happiness and sorrow. We also gave these two talks on grace some time ago:Śaktipāta & The Role of Grace In Tantra | Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra and alsoHow To Receive God's Grace | Śaktipāta in Kashmir ShaivismSupport the showLectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrM

Don't get into fear when you hear the word predestination in the Bible. Everything God has planned for our lives is good, but we do reap what we sow. There is good news: God has not "sovereignly" willed bad or evil for our lives. He is always working to bring good, but our own choices dictate whether we partner with God's plan for our lives.

Your Daily Portion – How to Study Bible Prophecy | Lesson 10 of 13Session Overview- Date: May 31, 2025 (Sabbath)- Host: L. David Harris- Program: Your Daily Portion- Theme: The Ends Have Come Upon Whom the Ends Have Come- Focus: Interpreting Bible prophecy with a lens on the last days, recognizing both warnings and promises in Scripture.---Key Biblical Reference: 1 Corinthians 10:11–13> "Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."> "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."---Section 1: Recognizing Warnings and Missing PromisesKey Points:- Many believers see the warnings in Scripture but miss the promises.- God's people often become self-reliant and forget that every good gift comes from Him.- Historical events (e.g., Exodus) are not just ancient history—they are prophetic models for today.Important Examples:- Exodus Generation: Except for Joshua and Caleb, the first generation did not enter the Promised Land due to unbelief.- Manna, Water from the Rock, Unworn Shoes: God provided miraculous daily needs.- Babylonian Captivity: God's people needed to be removed from Babylon, but also needed Babylon removed from them.Memory Aid:> "Warnings without promises lead to fear. Promises without warnings lead to pride. Together, they lead to faith."---Section 2: God's Faithfulness in the Last DaysKey Points:- We live in the last days, and God's Word is especially relevant now.- God gives examples from history to teach us how to live today.- The stories are not just to warn us, but to show us who God is—faithful, powerful, and merciful.Faithful God Framework:- Faithful Deliverer: God delivers us from every sin and temptation.- Faithful Provider: He supplies every need.- Faithful Guide: He gives a way of escape in every trial.Quote to Remember:> "God can perfectly steer the events that will happen in the last days, events that He revealed to the prophets, but He won't force you to love or serve Him."---Section 3: Interpreting Bible Prophecy with PurposeKey Points:- Bible prophecy is not just about future events—it's about character transformation.- Ask yourself: What does this teach me about God? About my time? About His faithfulness?- Prophecy should lead us to Jesus, the faithful Rock.Actionable Questions:- What does this story teach me about God's justice?- What does it teach me about God's mercy?- How does this story point to deliverance in the last days?Analogy:> "Bible prophecy is like a mirror—showing not only what's ahead, but also what's inside us."---Section 4: Free Will and Prophetic FulfillmentKey Points:- God respects free will, but still fulfills prophecy.- We can choose to follow God or not—but the best choice is clear.- The Bible gives us both warnings and invitations.Quote to Remember:> "Whatever way you're gonna go, if God be God, serve Him."---Section 5: Summary and EncouragementKey Takeaways:- Warnings in Scripture are real, but so are the promises.- God is faithful—He will provide strength and a way out in every trial.- Bible prophecy should be read through a last-days lens.- We are called to serve God fully, trusting in His promises.Closing Scripture:> "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." – Matthew 4:4---Study Tips & Memory AidsMnemonics:- W.A.R.N. – Warnings, Always, Reveal, Needs (to also look for the promises)- P.R.O.M.I.S.E. – Promises Reveal Our Motivation, Inspire Strength, and EncourageFrameworks:- The 3 Lenses Approach: 1. Historical Lens – What happened? 2. Prophetic Lens – What does this mean for today? 3. Personal Lens – What does this teach me about God and myself?- Promise Sandwich: - Bottom Layer – The Warning - Middle Layer – The Trial or Temptation - Top Layer – The Promise of DeliveranceReflection Questions:- What warning am I seeing in this passage?- What promise is connected to it?- How does this help me trust God more today?Analogy:> "The Bible is like a GPS—giving both warnings about the road ahead and the route to safety."---Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/your-daily-portion-with-l-david-harris--2912188/support.
In this episode, we explore complex familial relationships through a listener's struggles with anger and resentment towards their mother. I stress the importance of free will in decision-making and the need for personal accountability in addressing difficult emotions. We discuss the role of community in marital issues, using Stephen Crowder's divorce as a lens, and examine how societal values shape relationship choices.Additionally, we touch on the influence of religion and philosophy on moral development and the implications of biohacking and longevity on emotional connections. Finally, we consider the effects of parentlessness and societal structures on fertility rates, encouraging listeners to actively engage with their relationship complexities and submit questions for future exploration.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
What falls under God's sovereignty? And what falls under man's free will? This is a question worth answering. There is so much confusion in the body of Christ around this subject, but the Word clearly has the answer.
Tally Koren arrived in London with 1 suitcase and a dream in the late 90th, and against all odds became an international Singer - Songwriter. Despite family objections and countless music business rejections, what kept her going was, turning every minus to plus, taking every refusal to become better, and every hard situation to do something good to herself and others. Her turning point to fulfil her childhood dreams and to become a singer happened at the age of 26, while she was in a very un-happy marriage.A singing teacher immediately recognised her talent and thought that her low voice is reminding of Karen carpenter. In 2007 Tally made the decision to make her first album and not to wait for the record company.Despite one of the top radios plugger telling her that she doesn't have a chance to make it nationally being over 40. She made the choice to listen to the words of her song “Beauty of The Duty “saying “the only thing that holds you back is you”. Her song became a National success on the BBC radio 3 weeks later. Dr. Jacob Barandes is a professor of Physics at Harvard University who studies the foundations of physics. He has emerged as a leading skeptic of the idea that our universe is somehow fundamentally mathematical in nature, marking a full cycle of more than two thousand years of ink spilled about the nature of the universe. Barandes has found that there is a way of modeling the basement membrane of reality as being made of bodies with location, where everything from superposition to electricity and magnetism are a product of the motions of these bodies. Our conversation spans the basic principles that Barandes has used to arrive at this conclusion, the vital role that confusion over what constitutes a “measurement” plays in producing a highly paradoxical interpretation of nature, and the fact that this debate about the nature of the universe - substance versus mathematics - has been raging for more than two thousand years, with no end in sight. The psalmist describes the words that he directs to God as “freewill offerings of [his] mouth.” But it is the words that God directs to us that put the “freewill” in our mouth-offerings and make them pleasing to him.Music Credit: Johann Sebastian Bach, Trio from Brandenburg Concerto, No. 1, Movement 4

Heresies and idolatries come and go. The idolatry that titillated the ancients no longer excites modern men. The heresies that revolutionized the world a century ago no longer resonate. Any heresy is a repudiation of God, and thus is bound to vaporize like a puff of smoke. Falsehood cannot endure for long, and eventually all heresies dissipate. But a fixture of our world is the balance required to facilitate free will. When one heresy dies, another must take its place. Our sages tell us that the last heresy preceding the Messianic redemption is the repudiation of Free Will. In the third and final installment of my grandfather's chapter on Free Will, we study the nature of this heresy and the mechanism by which the good and evil inclinations are balanced.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, even though they knew it would lead to death, the Second Adam, the Lamb of God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, practiced total submission to God's Word in the garden of Gethsemane, knowing full well it would lead to His death on a Roman cross…a cross that He did not deserve…but a cross that would break the curse of sin that began so long ago when Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit.Support the showThanks for listening! Show Notes: Gideon Yaffe and his then girlfriend-now wife, Sue Chan, drove across the country after graduation to San Francisco, where they had no jobs or prospects. Gideon had applied to graduate school in philosophy but didn't get in anywhere. They got married and his first job was at a pet store, Gideon worked there for a while, then at a computer magazine. Studying Philosophy at Stanford While hanging out in San Francisco, he started reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, which he loved and found to be hugely rewarding. This inspired him to apply to grad school again and this time his application was accepted in a lot of places. He decided to study philosophy at Stanford, where he met Michael Bratman, a professor who worked on philosophy of action and related questions about the nature of action, agency, and intention. Gideon also became interested in the history of philosophy and wrote a dissertation about John Locke and contemporary problems related to the Free Will problem. Gideon went on the job market in academia. He got some interviews but didn't get a job. The following year, he got a one-year job at UCSD. His wife, Sue, was working in the film industry, so they moved to LA and he commuted down to San Diego. Tenure at the University of Southern California He finally secured a tenure track job at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1999 and taught Philosophy of Law classes. He wrote a paper about addiction, which he found interesting due to his knowledge of addicts and interest in freedom and addiction and how addiction would undermine freedom. When a friend of Gideon's was a victim of a carjacking incident, he became interested in the legal problem at the center of many carjacking cases that revolves around intention, so he wrote a paper about conditional intention. Gideon explains how carjacking differs from car theft, and the paper questioned whether a conditional intention was enough for the crime when the statute called for unconditional intention. Gideon felt that philosophy of law was important to work on but he needed to know more about the law, so he coerced USC into giving him a year in the law school. Gideon recounts his experience as a law student and how it led to teaching law in law school. Collaborating on a Neuroscience and Legal Proceedings Think Tank The MacArthur Foundation launched the law and neuroscience project, which aimed to bring together various people from philosophy, law, and neuroscience to discuss the relevance of neuroscience to legal proceedings, particularly in criminal law. Gideon was invited to be part of this think tank. During this time, he collaborated with neuroscientists on various problems and experiments related to neuroscience that could be useful to the legal system. This led to a desire to learn more about neuroscience and he pursued a grant to support the project. He spent another year as a neuroscience student at Cal Tech which allowed him to learn a lot about neuroscience. Gideon also started writing a book about attempted crimes. Gideon talks about the importance of understanding the double failure of attempts, and inherent impossible attempts. He highlights the number of cases where individuals seem incapable of committing crimes. Gideon received a job offer from Yale University after being a part of the MacArthur think tank and his book. He decided to take the position and he and his family moved to New Haven. Neuroscience, Law, and GenAI Intentions Gideon talks about the challenges faced by those who attempt to escape the harsh realities of the criminal justice system. His experiences highlight the importance of understanding the factors that contribute to attempted crimes. The conversation turns to Gideon's involvement in generative AI and the potential of AI intentions. He is currently working on a project with neuroscientist Uri Maoz, which aims to understand, for example, the difference between self-driving cars and drones in terms of intentions. Another project involves a group funded by billionaire Sergey Brin, who has a daughter with severe autism. The group aims to build AI models of the brain of a person and use the model to see how it responds to various forms of surgery. AI, Consciousness, and Intentions Organizing Behavior Gideon discusses the concept of AI consciousness. Gideon states that a lot depends on how consciousness is defined. One understanding is that consciousness involves self-representation of certain kinds of thoughts. He suggests that understanding consciousness depends on what one thinks about it. One way of understanding consciousness involves self-representation of certain kinds, such as having a second-order thought about the thought. If that's all that's required for consciousness, then these LLMs can be conscious. Another way of understanding consciousness involves qualia, or ways of feeling, such as experiencing a particular sensation or feeling something. However, he acknowledges that it is difficult to know exactly what it is like to be an LLM or a toaster. He acknowledges that there are some similarities between the two, but acknowledges the challenges in determining their exact roles in AI and neuroscience. Gideon explains that intentions serve to organize behavior in various interesting ways. For example, if an AI has intentions, they can make decisions now so they don't have to think about them later. This is relevant for coordinating behavior with each other, as well as interpersonal organization. The question of whether AIs have intentions is more tractable than the question of whether they are conscious. Intentions play a crucial role in various aspects of law, such as contract interpretation and legal texts. Understanding the intentions of AI and their potential impact on these areas is essential for understanding the future of AI and its applications in various fields. Updating Law to Address AI Intention The conversation explores the need to rewrite laws or update them to address the issue of intention in AI. Gideon states that the intention of a person or AI and the textual language, and the interpretation of the text are all areas that need to be explored. The project Gideon is working on aims to determine the intentions of AI by examining the role their representation plays in guiding their behavior. Gideon suggests that the question is whether inferences can be made about AI's intentions by looking at the role the representations plays from the AI behavior. Gideon talks about a project on criminal activity and neuroscience that he is proud of. Leniency and Child Criminality Gideon goes on to talk about leniency and child criminality. He argues that the reason to give a break to kids who engage in criminal behavior is disenfranchisement, not neural immaturity. He talks about the age of maturity, lack of political participation. Gideon's book about kids was written after completing his studies at Yale. He also discusses his personal life, including being in a car accident which resulted in a severe brain injury and how he is immensely grateful for his recovery. Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Gideon mentions a core class on the Baroque period by Simon Schama, which he found to be the most influential. The course focused on famous European paintings from the Baroque period, which he found to be a source of inspiration. Other influential courses include a seminar with Hilary Putnam, Rational Action with Robert Nozick. Son of a Saint provides guidance, mentorship and opportunities to young boys in the New Orleans area who did not have a father in the home, usually due to death or incarceration. Founded in 2011 by Sonny Lee, who lost his own father, a defensive back of the saints from a heart attack at the age of 36, Son of a Saint is making a significant impact on the lives of young boys in the New Orleans area. My wife and I have been supporters for many years, as has my firm advantage capital, which recently endowed a scholarship that will cover high school tuition for two boys from the program. Although my circumstances were much different, having lost my own father when I was five years old, I know firsthand how important a male influence can be on a young boy. I luckily had family members and friends who stepped up from me and hope in some small way, my support of Son of a Saint and the work their mentors do can give the boys and their programs similar help. What happens when data knows us better than we know ourselves? In this raw and riveting conversation, John Vervaeke and Christopher Mastropietro sit down with Andy Russell — a former architect of data-driven persuasion — to expose how AI, behavioral profiling, and social media algorithms can hijack human desire, threaten our agency, and reshape our civilization. But there's hope: what if the same power that manipulates us can be used to heal us? This episode lays bare the disturbing origins of persuasion tech, how it was used in politics and commerce, and what it will mean when AI takes the driver's seat. Andy shares his personal reckoning, his brush with death, and how he's dedicating the rest of his life to restoring dignity and meaning to the human experience — with spiritual urgency. Andy Russell is a serial entrepreneur and former insider in data and media technology. After helping build some of the very tools that now shape persuasion online, he experienced a profound moral and existential crisis. He now advocates for radical transparency, decentralized AI, and human-centered design as a pathway toward societal healing. Christopher Mastropietro is a philosophical writer who is fascinated by dialogue, symbols, and the concept of self. He actively contributes to the Vervaeke Foundation. Sundae Labs aims to build tools and systems that foster a healthier relationship between humanity and technology. On the 64th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, rock journalist, author and fellow Pantheon podcaster, Martin Popoff review the 1980 classic album by Rush, "Permanent Waves" As we have stated before, Rush is known for its incredible musicianship with Geddy Lee on vocals and bass, Alex Lifeson on guitar and perhaps the greatest rock drummer of all time, Neil Peart. Permanent Waves finds Rush attempting to become mainstream and commercial. The album was once again produced by the band and Terry Brown. The album cover is another classic Rush cover done by Hugh Syme. The album features more accessible songs and some classic Rush progressive songs as well. The band also experimented with sounds and even some reggae. The album went to #4 US Billboard album charts and went on to become certified platinum. Songs like The Spirit Of Radio and Freewill became concert staples. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. Find out if Zeus still hates Rush or does Rush lovers Tom & Martin convince him that he's wrong. So grab your witch's broom and rock out! People are allowed to choose a path of righteousness or wickedness. There is a certain modicum of self-determination that the Almighty provides us with. In this mini series, we study a fantastic chapter in my grandfather's Alei Shur volume 2 which explores fundamental concepts in free will that will help clarify and demystify this important subject.– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. Matthew David Segall, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Department at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, and the Chair of the Science Advisory Committee for the Cobb Institute. He is a transdisciplinary researcher, writer, teacher, and philosopher applying process-relational thought across the natural and social sciences, as well as to the study of consciousness. He describes himself as a “process philosopher” and transdisciplinary researcher, reflecting his commitment to bridging multiple fields. Segall's work builds on the metaphysical framework of Alfred North Whitehead, extending Whitehead's philosophy of organism into new domains of science, religion, and ecology. In doing so, Segall reinterprets the Western philosophical lineage – from ancient ideas of a world-soul to German Idealism and beyond – to articulate a participatory, organismic vision of nature. His philosophy portrays a cosmos ensouled with meaning and experience, challenging mechanistic materialism and inviting a renewed dialogue between science and spirit. Segall integrates insights from Whitehead, Schelling, Goethe, and Steiner into a process worldview, develops an organic (panpsychist) cosmology, practices a bold transdisciplinary methodology, and engages public dialogues that embody a form of sacred activism on behalf of our living planet.TIMESTAMPS:(0:00) - Introduction (0:43) - History of Mind-Body Problem(7:40) - Critiquing Physicalism(12:55) - Quantum Theory Interpretations(16:14) - Addressing Illusionism & Scientism(22:00) - The Metaphysics of Prehension(28:14) - Panexperientialism in Physics(31:55) - Propositional Feelings(37:09) - What is Consciousness?(45:00) - Panexperientialism & Free Will(50:00) - Bridging Science & Philosophy(54:42) - Challenging the Cold/Dead Universe tale(1:00:39) - Misconceptions about Matt's work(1:04:20) - Telos(1:07:44) - Matt's Philosopher recommendations(1:13:00) - Mind At Large (Upcoming Events!)(1:17:40) - Conclusion EPISODE LINKS:- Matt's Website: https://footnotes2plato.com- @Footnotes2Plato : http://www.youtube.com/@Footnotes2Plato- Physics Within the Bounds of Feeling Alone: https://footnotes2plato.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/physics-within-the-bounds-of-feeling-alone.pdf- Matt's X: https://x.com/ThouArtThat- Matt's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matthew.david.segall- Matt's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewdavidsegall- Matt's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/footnotes2platoCONNECT:- Website: https://tevinnaidu.com - Podcast: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/mindbodysolution- YouTube: https://youtube.com/mindbodysolution- Twitter: https://twitter.com/drtevinnaidu- Facebook: https://facebook.com/drtevinnaidu - Instagram: https://instagram.com/drtevinnaidu- LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/drtevinnaidu=============================Disclaimer: The information provided on this channel is for educational purposes only. Do you have an example of non-determinism being an emergent property out of deterministic subcomponents?I'm curious @Stefan Molyneux why do people seem to avoid simplicity or any reductions in complexity?I get tons of requests to add complexity to software at work without any regard for value provided to customers.I find it fun, interesting, and not overly difficult to simultaneously remove complexity, often deleting large amounts of code, even while adding features and making the program more robust.I saw this recently too with people mocking Musk's raptor 3 engine, which is a massive simplifications of the previous raptor 2 and 1 designs. I see this not only as practical, but also a thing of beauty that something so simple can be so functional, and likely, more reliable because of it. Yet, people seem to hate it, and I don't quite understand.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
